Noob here, wanting to upgrade my MBP HD to 1TB.

So I'm looking to upgrade the internal hard drive of my February 2011 13.3" Macbook Pro. It's 2.70GHz i7, 8GB RAM, current 500GB HD. Does anybody know what a good option would be? Preferably under $100, unless you can convince me that a more expensive one is worth the price difference
I also read a bit that some hard drive upgrades can slow down the computer, which I'd like to avoid as much as possible. But yeah, I just really don't know much on this stuff, so any help would be awesome.
Cheers!

Any 2.5" SATA Hard Disk Drive that is 9.5 mm thick will work in your MBP.  HGST and Seagate have performed well for me.  I have several 1 TB HDDs from each of those manufacturers.  Look at this link for possible selections:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/
Though a HDD with a faster rotation will enhance performance, it will not be as great as the speed differential suggests.  A 5400 rpm will be satisfactory if the budget is tight.
Ciao.

Yesterday, I tried a SEAGATE SSHD but my screen was always a showing a QUESTION MARK (?). It's not the cable because when I put back the old original version, everything works...Any sugestion of brabnding or procédure to upgrade my hard drive?

The largest 2.5" dia SATA drives available are 2 TB in capacity.
Have you tried the Seagate SSHD connected externally to the MBP via USB?  The drive itself may be faulty.

  • Which harddrive should I use, if i want to upgrade my mbp HD?

5400 or 7200? will 7200 be too hot for mbp? and sata 1.5 or sata 3.0?
is it Hitachi Travelstar 7K2000 HTS722020K9SA00 200GB Hard Drive
    (Serial ATA-150, 7,200 RPM, 16MB - MPN: 0A50940) good for mbp?
    thanks

5400rpm drives are okay for general stuff, 7200rpm drives are good for real time video streaming etc because of the fast spin times and bigger cache sizes.
    Again, SATA1.5 is good enough.
Personally I recommend Fujitsu drives which are quiet, long MTBF and offer decent cache sizes. Don't buy seagate drives - I've had bad experiences.

  • Want to upgrade from 10.7.5 on my MBP

I want to upgrade the software on my MBP.  My current software is 10.7.5 and i want 10.8.2.
I have the new download but my MBP wont let me install it as it says I Need 10.8 first.
I have tried to find this but I'm struggling as i think i need another update first before i can get 10.8.
Any help would be greatly appreciated - as you can probably guess I am a MBP Newbie
    Thanks

You downloaded 10.8.2 update from Support website, but it needs OS X 10.8. Open App Store and purchase Mountain Lion. When the installer has downloaded, it will appear, so follow its steps to upgrade to OS X 10.8.2. Make a backup before upgrading and check if your programmes are compatible > http://www.roaringapps.com

Which version of the utility will work on my MacBook, and still control the older Airport Extreme?

if I update the Airport to the latest version, and "control" it with my MacBook Pro, will the older G4 still be able to use the signal from the new Airport?
Yes. Your G4 shouldn't have any difficulty connecting to a Wi-Fi network provided by the latest 802.11ac AirPorts as they support the earlier radio modes that the G4 uses.

The main error in this position is thinking ANY sized SSD can be "storage"
Any Macbook SSD should be idealized as a working platform computer system, containing all your applications, documents, and weekly-use necessary files; and all media files such as ‘big-data’ (music/PDF collections/video/pictures), unless directly needed in the near future, should be kept off the computer and on external storage USB or likewise bare hard drives.
You cant do what you want without removing the internal SSD
Officially, it is not possible for an end user to upgrade the storage in any Retina Display MacBook Pro model after purchase

  • I have a hdd from late 2009 that I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  I want to upgrade the hdd to ssd.  Do I need to buy a new copy of mountain lion to install on the ssd?  If not, then what is the procedure to transfer?

I have a hdd from a late 2009 mbp.  I upgraded from leopard to snow leopard to lion to mountain lion.  Now I want to upgrade to a ssd.  Do I need to purchase a new copy of mountain lion to go on my new ssd? If I don't, then what is the procedure to transfer mountain lion with my 4 user accounts onto the new ssd from the hdd?
I'm confused on if I can use the recovery hd on a thumb drive to install mountain lion on my ssd.  Will it be pheasible with so many OS X upgrades?  And then how do I get my user accounts onto the ssd from the hdd.  Do I use migration assistant?  Do I need to make a time machine backup first?  Should I use something called Carbon Clone or something like that?
    Thanks for reading

If you have a cable that connects and external HDD to the MBP, it will do.  If it is something like this, an  enclosure will not be needed for the swap:
An enclosure allows you to use your old HDD for storage or backup purposes.  The cable will not.
Here are instructions as to how the swap can be performed using DISK UTITY.  Substitute You cable for the enclosure in same:
INSTALLING A NEW HDD IN A MBP
    1. Make certain that you have backed up all of your important data.
    2. You will need a HDD enclosure.  One with a USB connection will do.  A 9 pin Firewire is better.
    3. Install your new drive in the enclosure and connect it to your MBP.
    4. Open DISK UTILITY>ERASE.  From the left hand column drag the new drive into the 'Name' field.  Make sure that the format is 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.  Click on the 'Erase' button.
    5. Click on the 'Restore' button (on top).  Drag the old drive into the 'Source' field and the new drive into the 'Destination'  field.  Click on the 'Restore' button on the bottom right hand corner.
Depending upon the amount of data you are transferring, this may take a couple hours or more.  A Firewire will speed up the transfer.  This will result in both drives having identical information on them.
    6. After the data transfer has completed, you may swap the drives.  Start the MBP and you have finished the installation.  The initial boot may take a bit longer than you are accustomed to, but that is normal.
    7. When you are satisfied that the new hard drive if functioning properly, you can erase the old drive and use it for any needs that you may have.
If there is any confusion on your part, post back.
    Ciao.

I want to upgrade my macbook pro's ram to 8gb's I don't want to spend $200 on ram from apple, i Know that with buying it from apple, if it doesnt work they will do it for you, and it guranteed to work, i just don't have the money to do that.
they outlined how to do it here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1270#link1
and i found some memmory here

I am confident in my computer knowledge that I can install ram in a mac, i've done it to dozens of pc's
so what i'm looking for is reassurance before I do anything thank you

There should no problem in installing 8 GB RAM in your MBP.  Crucial is one of the best sources of RAM for Macs.  Now if you are so inclined, you can install 16 GB from OWC, the other reliable source for Mac RAM.

  • I have mac os x 10.6.8 and I want to upgrade my operating system

How do I upgrade my operating system.

First, which OS do you want to upgrade to?
Here are some requirements for the OS X versions after Snow Leopard. See if your MBP qualifies for any of these.
    OS X Lion 10.7.5
    OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5
    OS X Mavericks 10.9.1
Mavericks is free. OS X Lion and Mountain Lion would need to be purchased and you would have to call Apple Sales (800-MY-APPLE  USA) to purchase a redemption code; then redeem it at the App Store.

  • How do I downgrade from Lion to Snow Leopard without losing iWork 09?  I upgraded my MBP from 10.5 (originally 10.4) to 10.6, then again to 10.7.  Should I go back to 10.4, 10.5 or just to 10.6?

Thanks for the information!  My sister gave me the MBP for my daughter with Leopard installed.  I purchased Snow Leopard and installed it, then my daughter purchased Lion.  So I do have all the installers.  If iWork wasn't included with any of those, I guess my sister purchased it while running Leopard.  I'll have to contact her.  Thanks again.

  • Before my PC had iTunes, I loaded Aps from store onto my daughter's PC with iPad connected. I indicated my email address and Apple password. Now I want to upgrade to next iPad but Aps in my iPad are not on my PC iTunes. Do I have to buy again to keep them

I'm a new user of an iPad. Before my PC had iTunes (it does now), I loaded Aps from from the iStore using my daughter's PC with my iPad cable-connected. I indicated my email address and Apple password--not hers and paid for these Aps--receipts arrived via my email. Now I want to upgrade to 5.1 but the Aps now loaded on my iPad do not show up  on my PC iTunes library. When I click 'Upgrade' I get a warning message that says all Aps currently on the iPad will be obliterated in the process which of course I don't want to have happen because they're not showing up on my PC which presumably means my PC is not aware of what's on my iPad. Do I have to buy these same Aps again to keep them if I'm going to upgrade to 5.1, and how do I get my iTunes on my PC to back up the Aps currently loaded onto my iPad?

You should be able to copy the apps (and any other iTunes purchases) over to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. And as long as apps remain available in the store, and you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to purchase them, you should be able to re-download them in the future : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
If you are already on iOS 5+ on your iPad then you should be able to update the iPad directly on the iPad via Settings > General > Software Update .

  • I want to upgrade my ( iMAC 800Mhz Power PC G4 &  iBOOK 700Mhz PC G3)

    Hello!
I want to upgrade if possible over 1GB ? my now slow computer ( iMAC 800Mhz Power PC G4 ) and a ( iBOOK 700Mhz Power PC G3 ) which I don't think I'm confident enough to change the internal memory but the user memory I think I can attempt!
So I'd like to know what type of ram or "model numbers" I should be looking for if I what to upgrade my empty DIMMO /J22 slot to a 1GB ?
Keeping in mind I still have a 256GB factory standard ram in place (256 SDRAM PC133U-333)
i.e. how many pins "184 0r 200" do I need for for my model?
I seen lots off ram types like "Kingston PC2700, 333MHZ DDR 1GB memory "
PC2700 333MHZ is this the model number I should be looking for to upgrade to 1.256?
and for my ( iBOOK 700Mhz Power PC G3 ) is this also able to be upgraded to beyond the the original ibook specs just like it is suggested for the iMAC? which I also have only the original 256 SDRAM and a empty ram slot! again I not sure what model or type of ram I should be looking for here? or what is the max. it can be upgraded to with the new high density ram everyone is talking about!
I know you guy's must seem to answer these by now simple question for you! am sorry I don't have something more challenging for you but I do need your help with this one please!
since you've already done this and seem to know what your doing! I would like to ask for your help or anyone who know the answers to my questions ?
    Thank you in advance!

Unfortunatley, only imac models above 1ghz can take module of 1GB. your model can accomadate 512mb bringing it up to 768Mb which will make a decent improvement.
go to crucial.com and input your imac model to get the right type for your system. it's also best to buy from mac friendly companies as some cheaper modules wont work
    best of luck

You need iTunes 10.7 or later.
To get this, you need Mac OS 10.6.8 or later.
You can get 10.6 Snow Leopard here -> http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu, check if the computer has at least a Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and 2GB of RAM, and if it does, click here and order a download code for Lion 10.7.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.
