*Noob* Which of these would I use for a scratch disk? How much Ram?

Hello, I am fairly new to Photoshop as I have used Lightroom ever since I've been a photographer. I recently got into Photoshop with the cloud as well as layering multiple exposures together. I never KNEW anything about scratch disk, until yesterday.
First let me stress, please answer my questions in layman's terms. I search the net before I start a topic on a forum and I read a lot of answers that seem to be responding to people who have a general idea of what is already going on. Remember, I DO NOT. Here are my questions:
A:If the scratch disk acts like RAM, do I need to allow it to use any of my ram at all? If so, how much? I have two Macbook Pro's, they are the highest model Apple makes, both have SSD drives, Quad Core i7's, etc. I unchecked my Macbook hard drive and told it to use an external SSD drive that is plugged in via USB 3.0. Would it be better to use an HDD instead of SDD? I have lots of hard drives to choose from due to being a music producer.
B:When I exit the program does it delete all the data it created? This question is two fold, does it delete it regardless if I saved the project or not? If I save the project does it stay there? What if I delete the original photo, was the photo imported into photoshop upon camera raw?
C: Like question A, how much ram do I choose? I have 16GB of Ram in each of my MacBooks.

OK, I have now copied your hillbilly text and pasted it into a text editor to change the typeface so I can read it.
I'll try to address the lose ends here.
A:…I have two Macbook Pro's, they are the highest model Apple makes…
Please forgive me for not being impressed.  I just happen to consider any laptop a sub-optimal choice for Photoshop photography work.  My personal opinion.  (Please don't ask me why.)
, both have SSD drives,… I unchecked my Macbook hard drive and told it to use an external SSD drive that is plugged in via USB 3.0. Would it be better to use an HDD instead of SDD?…
I assume you are talking about using the external drive as your primary scratch disk, not as your boot disk.  That is the appropriate thing to do.  HD or SSD will both do the job fine, as long as they're physically separate, dedicated Photoshop scratch disks.
Obviously the internal drive will be your boot disk.  Adobe applications really like to reside on the boot disk, the drive where the OS resides.
B:When I exit the program does it delete all the data it created?
This question is two fold, does it delete it regardless if I saved the project or not?
If I save the project does it stay there? What if I delete the original photo, was the photo imported into photoshop upon camera raw?
NOTHING is ever imported into Photoshop, ever.  You use Photoshop to open your files exactly where you put them in the Apple Finder. And you save them wherever you wish, in the Finder as well. Your images will always reside in the Finder.
You don't import files into Adobe Camera Raw either.  You open them in or with ACR.
Of course you need to save your data, not only when you quit the application, but at frequent intervals while you're working on it.  Nothing you saved will be deleted by Photoshop.  How can you even conceive and ask such a question? ?? !
If you ever try to close a file or the application when you have open, unsaved files, the application will ask you for confirmation in an unmistakable way.
Your images will always reside in the Finder, wherever you put them.
Photoshop does not have the abominable "Libraries" scheme that made me detest Lightroom when I tried it.  Nor does Photoshop hide your image files in "packages" like the even more abominable iPhoto does.
Please forget anything you may be accustomed to in Lightroom and/or iPhoto, and approach Photoshop with a fresh mind, respecting it like the granddaddy of image editors it is.
C: Like question A, how much ram do I choose? I have 16GB of Ram in each of my MacBooks.
Again, you don't "choose RAM", instead you select a percentage of dynamically changing Available Memory (not RAM; see above) to allow Photoshop to use.  Leave at around 70%.
Please see the following post for an important tip.

  • What to use for a "Scratch Disk"...

    Hello All,
Prior to Christmas i lost my primary HD. Stupidly I didn't have a very good backing up procedure in place. I now have my G4 back up and runnung with a fresh HD and I would like to get off on the right foot.
Prior to the afore mentioned incident I had been using my primary for a scratch disk. It was a lack of education (ie, v.stupid) and I have now purchased a Lacie Little BigDisk (200GB) purely for FC media.
What I would like to ask is: Is there any reason to partition the disk? And, bearing in mind that I have not yet installed FC5, would it work better installed on the primary, or the external?
Forgive me if these answers seem uneducated, but to be honest in this area, I am...
If I could, I would like to ask a side question on partitioning.
As I mentioned, I have recently experienced a hard drive failure. Because of this I am now attempting to back-up everything I know, in the proper manner. I have been advised to clone my startup disk and I was thinking that If I bought decent external around 200GB I could partition it in half. My primary is 100GB and that would leave me with another 100 for music etc.
Does this sound like a decent plan?
I travel a LOT so I can only have 2 externals with me and they can't be too big. I thought with one as a scratch disk for Final Cut (my main work) and another for clone backing up and storage of music and movies etc...
I very much value the opinion's and advice from people here in the forum. Thank you for taking the time,
    Regards,
    Philip

The basic idea is that you don't want the drive that is playing back your media to be worried about doing anything else. That's why you don't want media on your system drive. It's got enought to do running the OS and FCP itself. Asking it to also playback media (although it can work) is really pushing it.
Of course you can store other files on your media drive, just don't ask it to do other things while playing back media files.
As for partitioning, remember that no matter how many partitions you have it's still physically only one drive. So partitions won't get around any of the above mentioned issues.
    Good Luck

  • For a new imac how much ram should i get?

If I buy a new iMac, I see that one can get it with 16GB or even 32GB RAM.  dMy 2007 iMac has 4 GB now after I upgraded?  What would the difference be?

    My 10 cents worth:
The minimum configurable amount of memory of a new iMac is 8Gb But...
If you are looking at a new upgradable iMac, absolute do NOT buy the Apple RAM upgrades at the time of purchase. It is grossly overpriced, and although good quality and reliable (I've been led to believe) you can buy just as good, if not better for a lot less. I wouldn't look further than OWC (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple/memory/) or Crucial (http://www.crucial.com/). Both offer matched pairs and kits that are guaranteed to work with your iMac and as you will see, cost a lot less than Apple. Don't be fooled by the price, they supply good quality, fast memory.
Secondly, in terms of how much RAM, the question is, what is your budget? I always believe that if you can afford it (and memory nowadays isn't that expensive) max out your system and then forget about it because:
    a) There's a fair chance that you'll be upgrading it again at some point if you don't max it out.
    b) You are releasing the maximum potential of your iMac (in terms of memory performance, although the jump from 16Gb to 32Gb will not be as significant as the jump from 8Gb to 16Gb))
    c) If you sell it, the extra RAM will be an attractive option for any buyer.

  • Laptop users: Any recommendations for a scratch disk for Illustrator CC?

    Hello everyone.
I have been reading into scratch disks and their use with Illustrator, Photoshop, etc. It seems most of the discussions have been about desktop systems though. I am currently using just a 13" late 2013 Macbook Pro w/retina. 256GB SSD and 8GB of RAM.
I actually have a new 1 TB external USB 3.0 WD drive, but I believe it's a 5400rpm and might not be fast enough to be used as a scratch disk? If not, I was thinking of either getting a 7200rpm USB 3.0 external drive, or a USB 3.0 external SSD. Perhaps something like these?
Amazon.com: U32 Shadow™ 240GB External USB 3.0 Portable Solid State Hard Drive SSD: Computers & Accessories
Amazon.com: HGST Touro Mobile Pro 1TB USB 3.0 Portable External Hard Drive, Black (0S03559): Computers &
Illustrator CC is currently just set to use my startup disk as the scratch disk. I don't believe I have run into any problems yet, that might have involved Illustrator needing more than my 8GB ram, and needing to use the scratch disk, but I am not totally sure, and I just want to get one setup anyways, for future use. I am also looking into using this with some light Photoshop use in the future also.
Those of you who use a laptop for Illustrator and other Adobe programs, what do you use for your scratch disk?
Also, where does Illustrator store these scratch disk temp files on a Mac? I have not been able to find any useful information through Google searching so far. Mostly just stuff related to Photoshop scratch disks. I would like to check the location these files are supposed to be stored to see if there's anything taking up HD space that I could take back, and also as a guide to see how much scratch disk space I should look into getting.
    Thanks!!!

Yes, you could do it. Remember to follow licensing restrictions. Here's an article on how to import after installing the operating system:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25773
Keep around locked in your office an external Firewire hard drive with partitions formatted for both Intel and PowerPC Macs containing all the applications and the operating systems and default user documents you want to keep. These can serve as the basis for the migration assistent import.

    hi all,
My odi is 11g. I met the error infor "Could not load JDBC driver class [com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver]" when i tried to connect to a sqlserver2000 database.
    The questions are:
    1. which jdbc driver should be used for sqlserver 2000?
    2. which folder to put it in?
    3. how to set the physical topological "Microsoft Sql Server" to use this jdbc driver?
    failed tries:
i downloaded the driver "SQL Server 2000 Driver for JDBC Service Pack 2" and put it in the following folders:
    1. .../oracledi/drivers, and set this path to CLASSPATH.
    2. .../oracledi/userlib didn't exist, i created it and put the driver in.
    3. .../oracledi/agent/dirvers, in which a readme file exists and told me to put drivers in this folder.
All these works were not useful. when I start odi.sh and try to connect to sqlserver2000 database, the same error infor came up.

    Hi,
You should check which JVM version is required by that version of the driver, I think the 2.x versions require a 1.6 JVM
What error are you getting? If it is the "com.sunopsis.sql.c: No suitable driver", it indicates it can't find the jar file (sqljdbc.jar) for the driver you specify.
Drivers folder in ODI 11g is under
    C:\oracle\product\11.1.1\Oracle_ODI_1\oracledi\agent\drivers.
if you are using the standolone version
    On windwos :
    C:\Documents and Settings\<userName>\Application Data\odi\oracledi\userlib
    on linux
    $HOME/.odi/oracledi/userlib
    Have a read of :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E14571_01/core.1111/e16453/install.htm#CHDBIFAJ
    Thanks,

    Procedure:
    1- Turn on your phone
2- Get paperclip take out tray and put your non working sim card in- T-moble and simple mobile sim cards work great for me on this venture.
    3. Goto Settings>General>Cellular>Cellular Network
At this point its very critical that you do this fast, Once you change the sim card to your net 10 the option Cellular Network will only stay on for a few seconds while it's searching for service. You will need to click on cellular once the Net10 sim card is in and click on Cellular network again.
    4. Get your paperclip take out the tray put in the Net 10 sim card
    5. Goto Cellular>Cellular Network while it's searching for service
    6. Type in your settings that I list above
    7. Scroll back to your main setting (Do not press your Home Button)
    8. Once you see your service up and running try out your web and send a picture message it should work.
    9. If it does'nt work you mistype one of the settings, it has to be exact or it wont work.
    10. Do the process all over again
Keep this information and the sim card away for a later date in case you lose your setting I have'nt turned off my phone or let my battery die to find out if I lose my settings. One thing for sure I lost it when I update to the IOS 6.0.1.

  • Which Event Classes i should use for finding good indexs and statistics for queries in SP.

    Dear all,
I am trying to use pro filer to create a trace,so that it can be used as workload in
"Database Engine Tuning Advisor" for optimization of one stored procedure.
Please tel me about the Event classes which i  should use in trace.
The stored proc contains three insert queries which insert data into a table variable,
Finally a select query is used on same table variable with one union of the same table variable, to generate a sequence for records based on certain condition of few columns.
There are three cases where i am using the above structure of the SP, so there are three SPS out of three , i will chose one based on their performance.
    1) There is only one table with three inserts which gets  into a table variable with a final sequence creation block.
    2) There are 15 tables with 45 inserts , which gets into a tabel variable with a final
    sequence creation block.
    3)
There are 3 tables with 9 inserts , which gets into a table variable with a final
    sequence creation block.
In all the above case number of record will be around 5 lacks.
Purpose is optimization of queries in SP
like which Event Classes i should use for finding good indexs and statistics for queries in SP.
    yours sincerely

"Database Engine Tuning Advisor" for optimization of one stored procedure.
Please tel me about the Event classes which i  should use in trace.
You can use the "Tuning" template to capture the workload to a trace file that can be used by the DETA.  See
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms190957(v=sql.105).aspx
If you are capturing the workload of a production server, I suggest you not do that directly from Profiler as that can impact server performance.  Instead, start/stop the Profiler Tuning template against a test server and then script the trace
definition (File-->Export-->Script Trace Definition).  You can then customize the script (e.g. file name) and run the script against the prod server to capture the workload to the specified file.  Stop and remove the trace after the workload
    is captured with sp_trace_setstatus:
DECLARE @TraceID int = <trace id returned by the trace create script>
    EXEC sp_trace_setstatus @TraceID, 0; --stop trace
    EXEC sp_trace_setstatus @TraceID, 2; --remove trace definition

What camera raw default settings would you use for the Canon 5D Mark 3. I have PS CS6.  Thank you.

Really, this is a question you should be asking yourself...
What do you shoot? Makes a difference...
Typical ISO that you shoot? Makes a difference...
Shooting for clients or yourself? Makes a difference...
Look, there is no magic bullet...the ACR/LR "Default" should only be changed for those adjustments you make 70-90% of the time and sould not be confused with image by image adjustments...
So, as asked, your question can not really be answered other than to say, use a default that suits you.

Adobe Illustrator.  Your company logo should be a vector file.  Image files can be "Placed" in Illustrator.  Artwork created for printing can be drawn in Illustrator and saved as .ai, .eps, and .pdf files which can be imported into your printer's RIP.  But, check with your print vendors and see what they require.  This does not rule-out Photoshop, however Photoshop can be limited.  So, it would be a good idea to have Photoshop and Illustrator loaded in your workstation with Illustrator being the go-to application.

Which kernel module should I use for Marvell Yukon 88E8001?
    a. sky2
    b. skge
    c. sk98lin

    I found this in the kernel''s /driver/net/Kconfig:
    config SKGE
    tristate "New SysKonnect GigaEthernet support"
    depends on PCI
    select CRC32
    ---help---
This driver support the Marvell Yukon or SysKonnect SK-98xx/SK-95xx
and related Gigabit Ethernet adapters. It is a new smaller driver
with better performance and more complete ethtool support.
It does not support the link failover and network management
features that "portable" vendor supplied sk98lin driver does.
This driver supports adapters based on the original Yukon chipset:
Marvell 88E8001, Belkin F5D5005, CNet GigaCard, DLink DGE-530T,
    Linksys EG1032/EG1064, 3Com 3C940/3C940B, SysKonnect SK-9871/9872.
It does not support the newer Yukon2 chipset: a separate driver,
sky2, is provided for Yukon2-based adapters.
To compile this driver as a module, choose M here: the module
will be called skge. This is recommended.
Looks like your module is "skge"

Which Datatype I have to use for Images in MS-Access Database ?

Depends upon whether you are referring to a variable or the data type of the column in which to store the data. For a table you should use an OLE Object. For example, you could use something like the following to store an image into a Access table from a
    PictureBox (sans OLE header):
    Dim AccessConnection As New OleDbConnection("Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" & _
    "Data Source=C:\Test Files\db1 XP.mdb")
Dim AccessCommand As New OleDbCommand("INSERT INTO BlobTable (ID, BLOB) " & _
    "VALUES (@ID, @BLOBData)", AccessConnection)
Dim PictureMemoryStream As MemoryStream = New MemoryStream()
    Form3.PictureBox1.Image.Save(PictureMemoryStream, System.Drawing.Imaging.ImageFormat.Jpeg)
    Dim BLOBData(PictureMemoryStream.Length - 1) As Byte
    PictureMemoryStream.Position = 0
    PictureMemoryStream.Read(BLOBData, 0, PictureMemoryStream.Length)
    AccessCommand.Parameters.AddWithValue("ID", 7)
    AccessCommand.Parameters.Add("BLOBData", OleDbType.LongVarBinary, BLOBData.Length, DataRowVersion.Current).Value = BLOBData
    AccessConnection.Open()
    AccessCommand.ExecuteNonQuery()
    AccessConnection.Close()

  • Which Java program do I use for this game?

Okay, I'm programming a video game for my High School grad project.
Now, I'm just wondering, which Java program do I use for it? It will be 2-d, I'd like it to have SNES like graphics, and it will be a platformer, but kind of like Metroid. You will be able to change forms, from ice to water to a gaseous state, and you have different powers according to which form you're in, like forming an ice bridge in ice form, slipping through cracks in water form, and rising higher in a gaseous form.
    Thank you for your help.

no, not if you did not code java before.
There are IDEs like Eclipse arround but that are not good at beginning because they are quite complex and don't take away the coding.

  • Which cable connection do i use for exterior monitor for my macbook OSX version 10.7.3.

please help me figure out which port i need to use for this situation. Thank you for helping save this fail. Happy Monday.

Depends on what input plug you'll be using on your TV. VGA, DVI, Composite or HDMI. You'll need a Mini-DVI adapter and a cable from that to your TV. Here's the various types of Mini-DVI adapters on Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13
(Composite is the red, white and yellow RCA plugs on your TV or red, white and S-Video plugs.)
You'll also need audio cables to the TV using a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs for VGA, DVI or Composite. You attach it from the headphone jack of your MacBook to the appropriate input plugs on your TV http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=min i-dvi&x=9&y=13#/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_2_19?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=macbo o k+audio+cable&sprefix=macbook+audio+cable&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Amacbook+audio+cable
If you connect the MacBook using a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter you will probably need to use external speakers or a 3.5mm stereo headphone jack to RCA sound plugs connected to a stereo system for audio if your TV doesn't have separate RCA input plugs or a 3.5mm stereo input plug for audio with the HDMI plug. The Mini-DVI to HDMI doesn't carry audio and there're no audio plugs on most TVs to work with HDMI since it's expecting audio with the HDMI.
