Noob with some iweb questions...

Let me clarify - im not a noob when it comes to mac & computers in general, but when it comes to web pages, how they're made, & hosted etc i have no idea!
I have been using iweb08 to make my web page for my business. Its turning out really well but there are a few things i'd like to know...
1. Can i add any flash (or moving) menus? nothing too complex but i really like those menus that expand with drop down boxes etc
2. My business is a DJ/entertainment business & id like to add some music (my own productions) to some of the pages. What is the best way of doing that?
3. Protection: how do I make sure my site doesnt get hacked? how is iweb security?
4. Google searches - how do i optimize my site to make sure it comes up well in a google search
5. Any good tutes around that may answer these questions & more? Free is good
thanks in advance

  • Potental switcher with some Mac questions...

    Hey all, I'm an XP user who is thinking of buying an iBook. I'm a college student, so having a laptop to take to class and school would really be a great plus for me. I've tried out iBooks at my local Apple store and I've done some initial research, but I still have a few questions. I'm hoping that somebody here will be nice enough to help me out at least a little bit.
    I currently have a desktop PC with Windows XP running. Since I divide my time between this computer and the computers at my college, I have a folder marked "Active Files-Spring 2006" on the desktop of my PC. I have copies of these files in two other places, a Zip drive (the computer is old) and an iPod Shuffle that does duty as a flash drive. Since I use the computers at the school more than my PC, I mainly use the files on either the Zip or the Shuffle as the main files (what I start the files from) and use the folder on my PC as a backup. When I change a file or folder, say in the Shuffle, for example, I then use the in-folder menu to make copies to both the Zip and the folder on my PC.
    My question is this: in Tiger, is there an easy way to perform a similiar operation? If I had an iBook, I would then reverse the way I operate: The files on the computer would become my main files, with the Shuffle acting as a backup. Can I create a folder that holds all of my active files and place it on the right side of the dock? If I can do that, can I just copy and paste files from that folder to my Shuffle? I understand that if I drag and drop in between folders on different disks, it makes copies, whereas if I drag and drop between folders on the same disk, it moves the files. Is this correct?

    Hi, nathan. Welcome to the Discussions.
    FYI: When asking multiple questions, it helps to number them individually. That way someone can respond without quoting the text so that their answers relate directly to your specific questions.
    1. You wrote: "My question is this: in Tiger, is there an easy way to perform a similiar operation?"Sort of.
    2. You wrote: "Can I create a folder that holds all of my active files and place it on the right side of the dock?"Icons in the dock are actually aliases, ala shortcuts in Windows parlance.
    You'd create a folder, say in your Home folder, called "Active Files" and keep your active files there. You'd then drag the icon for this folder to the Dock to have quick access the "Active Files" folder or its contents via the Dock.
    One does not copy/move files out of the folder in the Dock. One places a folder's icon in the dock to quickly open the folder, or open a file in the folder, or add files to the folder.
    If you want to copy/move files between "Active Files" and your Shuffle, you'd click "Active Files" icon in the Dock, which will open the real Active Files folder and then make the copy/move operations you desire from the real folder to the Shuffle.
    You wrote: " I understand that if I drag and drop in between folders on different disks, it makes copies, whereas if I drag and drop between folders on the same disk, it moves the files. Is this correct?"Yes, but there's an important difference between how Windows and Macs work in this respect. Let's say you have a folder named Project in the Active Files folder and a copy of the Project folder on your Shuffle. In Windows, as I understand it, if you drag Project from the Shuffle to the Active Files folder on the PC, it essentially copies the changes on the Project folder on the Shuffle to the Project folder within the Active Files folder on the PC.
    In Mac OS X, if you dragged the Project folder on the Shuffle to the Active Files folder on the iBook, it would warn you that you are about to replace the Project folder within Active Files with the Project folder from the Shuffle. If you approve this action, then the Project folder in Active Files would be completely replaced by a copy of the Project folder copied from the Shuffle.
    A number of Windows users unfamiliar with how this works on a Mac have been surprised when they thought that only the differences would be copied, as opposed to it being a complete replacement. Mac OS X uses the literal interpretations of the words Move, Copy, and Replace.
    Good luck!

  • Please help me with some backup questions....

    After suffering through two hard drive failures (not my main drive, fortunately), and being frustrated with trying to keep everything backed up, I'm taking a fresh approach to everything and I plan to do the following:
    1.  Purchase a new, 2 TB hard drive (enterprise class - Can you guys recommend a reliable one?) and clone my existing main hard drive to it.
    2.  Purchase a second identical drive and install it in bay #2.
    3.  Likely purchase G-Technology's G-Safe with Raid 1 capability.  Likely 3 TB just cause.
    4.  I'll keep my current 1 TB Hitachi Deskstar in the 3rd bay.  It serves only my Sonos music system.  (I wanted a separate drive for that so my regular drives weren't always running.)
    So far so good.  I plan on putting all my files on the one main 2 TB drive.  (Formerly roughly 500 GB of music was on a separate internal drive, the one that's died twice now. Seagate Barracuda FYI.)  I'll then clone the main drive to the identical drive in the 2nd bay and make it bootable as well.  That's backup #1 and I plan on having it also updated regularly.  (Incrementally, not a complete erase and rewrite, but still keeping it bootable.)  I'll then hook up the Raid 1 drive and clone the main hard drive to that as well, also making it bootable.  That will give me backup #2 and #3 (through mirroring).  These drives will be backed up less often and when not being used, will be stored in a fire proof safe in the garage.  So far so good, I think.
    What I'm stuck on is what software to use for doing the cloning and more importantly, the backups.
    For the cloning, I understand I can simply use the Restore function in the Disk Utility.  Is this correct?  Or am I better off using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner?  If so, which one?  And why?
    For the regular backups, I have been using Retrospect but frankly, I'm less than impressed with their interface and I've never liked the fact that even if the backups aren't compressed, I can't see the files unless I do so through Retrospect.  I can't just go to the backup drive and view the files.  They're all hidden in the one Retrospect icon.  So, I'm considering the following:
    Time Machine:  However, I was less than impressed with it in the past as it seemed to completely fill whatever drive I pointed it to and then it would fail to backup.  I never could figure it out that well.
    SuperDuper:  I was just checking them out and it seems that it's not only a good cloner, but will also then keep that clone up to date and bootable on a regular basis.  It really sounds like it's what I need.  And the screen shots I saw on their site seem pretty well thought out and explain a lot.
    Carbon Copy Cloner:  I know this app has been around for a long time, though I've never used it.  I'm presuming it's good for cloning a drive onto a larger drive, just as SuperDuper is, but can it do scheduled backups of that clone like SuperDuper can?
    And in all cases, I want to keep both the second internal drive and the external RAID drives backed up from their original clonings.  Can any of these programs handle ongoing backups to two or more destinations from the same source?
    And finally, a last question or two:
    To repeat my first question, who makes a really reliable enterprise class drive?
    And has anyone had any experience with G-Technology's G-Safe with RAID 1?
    Thanks much for all your help.
    Oh, here's my system:  Mac Pro tower, 2008 2.8 GHz, 10 GB ram.  Dual Intel processors.  Currently 10.5.8, soon to be 10.6.8.

    Hitachi and Seagate both make enterprise class drives. Just visit their websites to find models.

    I don't know what your desires are for backup redundancy, but I would create a two drive mirrored RAID for your main backup. This could consist of two identical hard drives mounted in your Mac Pro's slots (this is what I do.) Or you could purchase a two-drive external case and use Firewire. (I also do this.) Drive size should be determined by how large a drive(s) you are backing up and if you plan to use Time Machine. TM's backup device must be at least twice the size of the drive(s) it backs up.

    If you are running Lion then do not use SuperDuper. It has not yet been updated for reliable use with Lion and cannot handle Lion's Recovery HD. Carbon Copy Cloner's recent beta release would be a good choice as would Synk Pro from Decimus, or Tri-Backup.  All of these will clone a drive as well as perform scheduled backups/updates of a clone. But only CCC properly deals with Lion's Recovery HD at this time. All of these make essentially file by file copies from the source to the destination. One can easily restore a file or a few items without needing to use the backup utility since everything on the backup is accessible through the Finder.
    TM is not able to create a bootable clone. It is an archival backup utility intended for home users needing basic, automatic, and simple to use backup software. Restoring software from a TM backup can only be done through the TM application.

  • Can anyone help me with some needed iweb advice

    First thanks for taking the time and reading this. I currently have four mr site websites three we use for our academy and one which is just my personal site. I have been playing with the iweb and love it, and would rather use those templates as i find them easier and they give me more options in how the site looks. I have some questions being a newbie and Im hoping all you guys out there will help a new mac user. Who is just learning about computers so dont really have much knowledge.
    I would like to know if i want to use my mr site url domain names can i transfer them to a iweb account.
    which iweb package is best for me as I have websites or will i have to take one account out for each one.
    third question as i own my url name how do I change my imac name to my domain name is it difficult.
    Can anyone help as im really struggling thanks and have a merry christmas and a happy new year everyone.

    I would like to know if i want to use my mr site url domain names can i transfer them to a iweb account.
    Most likely you can forward them to sites hosted on .Mac or another server. Check your Domain Control Panel with your Domain name registrar to see.
    which iweb package is best for me as I have websites or will i have to take one account out for each one.
    The iWeb application offers many template choices. If you choose to open a .Mac account, you can host as many sites on your iDisk as your purchased server space will allow. Browse the .Mac page for more info on Apple's iDisk.
    third question as i own my url name how do I change my imac name to my domain name is it difficult.
    You are allowed one Domain name per .Mac account. You must log into your .Mac account, then to account settings. Click on the Personal Domain tab and proceed from there. It's not too hard; if you run into difficulties post back and everyone here will help you.

  • Question marks with some audio files

    Hello all,
    I've been trying to understand the problem I'm having with some audio files of my website, but to no avail. Some audio file are not loaded up with Quicktime, and only show a question mark with a blue "Q" around it.
    In other words, would any of you be able to help me find out why the audio files in the following pages do not work:

    Although it does in these other pages:

    I really appreciate your help.

    You are giving viewers the full title on your web page.
    You could cut your files names like < Beethovens_Piano_Concerto_no._2_in_B-flat_major%2C_op._19_-_i._Allegro_conbrio.html >
    to something like BthvnPC2BfM.
    Publish to a folder and look in the "Media" folder to see that all your files are there.
    A better way to provide a download is to ZIP the music file and link to it via "Link to: A file" in the Link Inspector.
    Type "Download" over the file name that appears and select your rollover colors and U or not in the format page.

  • FMS2 noob with capabilities question

    Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
    I am just learning the basics of FMS2 and have some simple
    questions(I hope).
    I currently have a php/mysql application that creates mixes
    of mp3s.The songs are played using progressive downloads and this
    is causing some concerns among the license holders.I understand
    that by using FMS2 I can stream the mp3s instead.
    My question is about keeping current functionality after
    migrating to FMS2.
    My mp3 player uses xml playlists.Its is already coded to hook
    into flashcom streams if needed. To create a playlist, a user
    searches the DB and adds songs to his account. I then use php to
    write the added song data to an xml playlist. The playlist is
    stored in the users folder, with a copy of the mp3 player. The mp3s
    are all pulled from a specific location on the server.
    From what I have learned about FMS2 so far(which is very
    little), I am not sure if streams can be dynamically created in the
    same fashion. I have seen plenty of info about FMS2 streaming mp3s
    from a specific playlist with the mp3 all coming from the
    application folder, but not any info about what I am trying to
    attempt.
    I would not be doing the coding myself, I can handle
    php/mysql but I know very little about action script and have
    little time to learn. But I want to know if I am barking up the
    wrong tree. Are dynamic streams possible? I dont want to look like
    an idiot when I try to hire someone to code an impossible solution.
    Im not looking for a how to, just want to know if the capability
    exists in FMS2
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Yes... everything you're asking about can be done with FMS,
    and fairly easily at that.

  • Some basic questions how to handle Exceptions with good style

    Ok I have two really basic Exception questions at once:
    1. Until now I always threw all exceptions back all the way to my main method and it always worked well for me but now I am sitting at a big project where this method would explode the programm with throwings of very many exceptions in very many methods. So I would like to know if there is a more elegant solution.
    2. What do I do with exceptions that will never occur?
    Lets say I have a method like this:
    void main() {calculate();}
    void calculate()
    sum(3,5);
    void sum(int a,int b)
    MathematicsA.initialise("SUM"); // throws AlgorithmNotFoundException, will never occur but has to be handled
    }So what is the most elegant way?:
    h4. 1. Ignore because it will not happen
    void sum(int a,int b)
    try {MathematicsA.initialise("SUM");}
    catch(AlgorithmNotFoundException) {}
    }h4. 2. Print stacktrace and exit
    void sum(int a,int b)
    try {MathematicsA.initialise("SUM");}
    catch(AlgorithmNotFoundException e)
    e.printStackTrace();
    System.exit();
    }h4. 3. throw it everywhere
    void main() throws AlgorithmNotFoundException, throws ThousandsOfOtherExceptions  {}
    void calculate()  throws AlgorithmNotFoundException, throws HundretsOfOtherExceptions
    sum(3,5);
    void sum(int a,int b) throws AlgorithmNotFoundException
    MathematicsA.initialise("SUM");
    }h4. 4. Create special exceptions for every stage
    void main() throws MainParametersWrongException
    try {calculate();}
    catch(Exception e)
      throw new MainParametersWrongException();
    void calculate()  throws SumInternalErrorException
    try {sum(3,5);}
    catch (SumInternalErrorException)    {throw new CalculateException();}
    void sum(int a,int b) throws SumInternalErrorException
    try
    MathematicsA.initialise("SUM");
    } catch (AlgorithmNotFoundException e) {
    throw new SumInternalErrorException();
    }P.S.: Another problem for me is when a method called in a constructor causes an Exception. I don't want to do try/catch everytime I instantiate an object..
    Example:
    public class MySummation()
         Mathematics mathematics;
         public MySummation()
                 mathematics.initialise("SUM"); // throws AlgorithmNotFoundException
         void sum(int x,int y)
              return mathematics.doIt(x,y);
    }(sorry for editing all the time, I was not really sure what I really wanted to ask until i realised that I had in fact 2 questions at the same time, and still it is hard to explain what I really want to say with it but now the post is relatively final and I will only add small things)

    I`m not a guru, but give my point of view. First of all, the first way is rude. You shouldn`t use try with empty catch. "rude" isn't the word I'd use to describe it. Think about what happens if an exception is thrown. How will you know? Your app fails, and you have NO indication as to why. "stupid" or "suicidal" are better descriptions.
    Then for the second way, I`ll reccomend for you use not printStackTrace(); , but use special method for it:
    public void outputError (Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    }It`ll be better just because if in future you`d like to output error message instead of stack of print it on GUI, you`ll need change only one method, but not all 'try' 'catch' statements for changing e.printStackTrace(); with the call of new output method.I disagree with this. Far be it from me to argue against the DRY principle, but I wouldn't code it this way.
    I would not recommend exiting from a catch block like that. It's not a strategy for recovery. Just throw the exception.
    Then, the third way also good, but I suppose you should use throws only if the caller method should know that called method have a problem (for example, when you read parametrs from gui, so if params are inccorect, main method of programm should know about it and for example show alert window)."throw it everywhere"? No, throw it until you get to an appropriate handler.
    If you're writing layered applications - and you should be - you want to identify the layer that will handle the exception. For example, if I'm writing a web app with a view layer, a service layer, and a persistence layer, and there's a problem in the persistence tier, I'd let the service layer know what the persistence exception was. The service layer might translate that into some other exception with some business meaning. The view layer would translate the business exception into something that would be actionable by the user.
    And in all other cases I suppose you should use the fourth way. So I suppose it`s better to combine 2,3,4 ways as I have mentioned above.I don't know that I'd recommend special exceptions for every layer. I'd reuse existing classes where I could (e.g., IllegalArgumentException)
    Sorry, I can give you advice how to avoid problem with try-catch in constructor. :-(You shouldn't catch anything that you can't handle. If an exception occurs in a constructor that will compromise the object you're trying to create, by all means just throw the exception. No try/catch needed.
    You sound like you're looking for a single cookie cutter approach. I'd recommend thinking instead.

    The reset link will only show if you have a rescue email address (which is not the same thing as an alternate email address) set up on your account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312
    If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.
    Contacting Apple about account security : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
    When they've been reset (and if you don't already have a rescue email address) you can then use the steps half-way down this page to add a rescue email address for potential future use : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5312

    Read the HT5312 page that you posted from, it has instructions for how to reset them i.e. if you have a rescue email address set up on your account then steps 1 to 5 half-way down that page should give you a reset link.
    If you don't have a rescue email address then you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple in your country to get the questions reset.

  • I need help with some questions

    I seen where it said if something happens to your computer that you will loose the music you bought and downloaded . Will you also loose the information about your itunes gift card ?How do you run a diagnostic before you buy ? Is there a phone number to contat someone in this case , or could it be sent to my E-Mail address ? Also I would like to thank the people that helped me with my first question .

    It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer, so if somethign happens to your computer, you lose nothing, as you have a backup copy.
    "Will you also loose the information about your itunes gift card ?"
    When you redeem a gift card the balance is on your account.  It is accessible from anycomputer with itune, when you sign into your account.  This would not be affected by lodd of your computer.  Again, you should ALWAYS have a backup copy of your computer.
    "How do you run a diagnostic before you buy ? "
    Runa diagnostic of what before you buy what?
    "Is there a phone number to contat someone in this case , or could it be sent to my E-Mail address ?"
    Again,  in what case?  Could what be sent to your e-mail?

  • A whole slew of iWeb questions:

    FAIR WARNING: I've always been chastised for taking 15,000 words to say what could be explained in 300 words -- this post is not and exception (Sorry).
    I never thought I'd be a technology elitist, but since I finally made the switch to Apple as soon as the MacBook Pro was released I've started forcing "Steve Jobs for President" buttons on everyone I know. I'm one of these dudes that knows just enough to be firmly grounded in the fact that I know nothing.
    So, now that I'm firmly committed to Apple/Mac, I'm trying to convert everything I can. I am the current (pretend) administrator for my church website - www.drccsedona.com. I'm building ver 2.awesome through iWeb and will probably make the switch to .mac in late April. Before I get in trouble for completely screwing up the church website, I'm wanting to clarify some points about iWeb and .mac. Here they are:
    - I want to do some really simple post-publishing things (change link colors, add web forms, etc.) and from already posted threads it seems like this won't be too difficult as long as I get, and learn to use, things like MassReplaceIt and Wufoo (that one looks pretty slick - thanks 'varkgirl'). My question is, if I'm already going to subscribe to a .mac account anyway, can any of you gurus shed some light on whether I will need to just plan on publishing to a folder, or if publishing straight to .mac will work?
    - This is just a luxury, but does anyone know, or has been successful at getting a .ICO image uploaded to a site directory and working with an iWeb/.mac setup? (For anyone wondering, I'm hopefully referencing this correctly -- the icon image that some web browser's display before the url in an address bar.
    - I thought I saw a thread in the past that displayed frustration at iWeb's inability to publish two separate sites. In addition to my church site, I've registered the domain 'frigginrad.com' and I'm hoping to publish a site to this domain in the future (under a different .mac subscription) -- anyone foresee problems for me here?
    - Lastly, for now, I think I've got the Forward/Masking concept down, but I tried this (GoDaddy) for one of my domains and it masked the entire url -- which I wasn't expecting. Here's an example of what I mean:
    'www.mydomain.com' forwarded and masked to 'www.redirecteddomain.com'.
    This worked well, but when I visited different parts of my site I expected to see a url of 'www.mydomain.com/aboutme' or 'www.mydomain.com/links' and instead it the url in the address bar never changed from 'www.mydomain.com'. I hope what I'm describing makes sense. If this is the way it's gonna be, I can live with it, but am I just missing something?
    Any feedback will be much appreciated! Thanks Gang.

    You can do post publish changes on .Mac, no worries.

    Well first off, you can publish them both to the same .Mac subsctiption and then forward your two differernt domain.com addresses to the proper location on .Mac.
    If you want things located directly on yourdomain.com you will have to publish to a folder and upload via ftp, purchase hosting, etc. You would also need to split your domain file.
