Normalization Gain vs. Manual Gain

In Final Cut 6 I've applied a gain of +12db to a clip and no audio peaks are found; but when I apply "normalization gain" to 0db (default) it only applies a gain of +7.38. If +12db produces no audio peaks, shouldn't "normalization" set it's gain at least that high? Thanks.

  • SVT Gain & Phase - no gain value output

Our application has been using the SVT Gain & Phase.vi from the Sound and Vibration Toolkit
add-on for Labview with no problems until we try to upgrade.
The original versions in use are: Labview 8.2, Testand 3.5 and the Sound & Vibration Toolkit 4.0.
Basically, the SVT Gain & Phase.vi is used to return a gain value back into Teststand.
I ran our application using Labview 2009 and the
Sound & Vibration Toolkit 2009, a test based on the SVT Gain & Phase.vi failed.
Stepping through the code showed that the VI was not returning a dB gain value, but "Nan" instead.
Also the function would generate an error, details are:
    Error code: -1945
Basic detail: The fundemental tone was not detected.
I also tried our application with Labview 8.6 and
Sound & Vibration Toolkit 7.0, this also produced the same problem.
When I looked closely at the other output values of the VI, detected frequency
and amplitude of the signals, these values were comparable with all previous passed
tests, despite the error with the gain value.
In fact, because the detected amplitudes of the signals were correct,
I was able to manually calculate the gain value even though the VI couldn't.
On one hand the function is correct to complain about one of the input signals
because it's not perfect, but why should the VI from an earlier version of
the SVT not generate an error ?  Is the newer VI version less tolerant ?
    Thanks,
    Gary.

    Dominic,
    Thank you for your reply.
With reference to your question about the phase, it's something I cannot answer at this
moment as the phase value is not something we monitor.
Looking closely at how we are using the SVT Gain & Phase.vi, I realised there is scope
to improve the response signal y [EUy] value that is passed in.
By increasing the number of samples obtained from the output of the unit under test by
10 x, this gives a waveform with which the VI is happy to "detect the fundamental tone".
And so the gain value is returned as a number and not "Nan".
For the time being it's the solution we are happy with.
    regards,
    Gary.

  • Normalisation and Changing Gain - what's the difference?

    Hi Everybody,
Simple example: I have an audio file with a maximum peak of -5 dB.
What is the difference when I either add 5 dB with the 'change gain' function, the normalize function or the gain plug in? Do they not all do exactly the same? Don't they all 'up' my noisefloor 5 dB as well?
I was wondering because I get the impression that Normalisation is seen here as an abomination, an affront to craftsmanship. But is it? Or is that because it implies not having levelled the input signal 'perfectly'?
    regards, Erik.

    Hi Erik,
Your example is using all 3 tools to change the gain to the maximum level. If that is your desire then I don't believe that there would really be any difference in your result.
It is not so much about my desires as it is about my curiosity, since so many seasoned musicionados here appear to quiver with curled toes at the prospect of normalisation, which made me think that maybe something about the algorythm was different.
Normalization does not give you any control over the amplitude level. It always goes to maximum. So unless you want to change it to the maximum level it is not the right tool.
I believe in both Logic and Peak you can set a percentage or a deciBel-age.
Also, i think a lot of distrust of normalization comes from the fact that it used to be a destructive process that could yield unexpected results. Being that is not the case now it is easier to experiment with it without worrying about ruining your recording.
Yep, that was one of my deliberations too. Thanks Ambient, for your 2 cents!

  • Specifying dot gain curves for custom CMYK profile

I am trying to create a custom CMYK profile that would mimic the FOGRA39 (coated) ICC profile but would provide more control.
When creating a custom ICC profile, I'm trying to specify the dot gain curves manually by entering the Tonal Value Increase data published by the International Color Consortium. But the last data point at far right (100 on the horizontal axis) always remains at 100% high instead of the appropriate 0%. In other words, the point at the top right corner should actually be at the bottom right corner. The point is uneditable, because it doesn't have a corresponding 100: entry field.
This is how the curve should actually look like:
I want to place the last point at the bottom right corner but I cannot figure out how to do that. I'm using Photoshop CC 2014 on Windows 8.1.
Do I misunderstand anything about the dot gain curves? Is this a bug? Does it actually affect the dot gain for dark shadows or is it merely a display problem?
I would appreciate any pointers to information about this problem.

Thank you. I have figured out by experimentation that you are right. I've fixed my dot gain curves to look like this:

  • Constant Gain in multiple breaks

I would like to find a way to add constant gain in multiple areas on my timeline on all the breaks I have between my clips. Is there a way to select all and paste this in one action? I have added an image that shows where I would like to add the constant gain.

Make constant gain your default audio transition.
Select the audio part of the clips and go to Sequence/apply default transition to selection.

The gain is basically for the antenna used on the access point. An 1142 has built-in antennas so this command will not change anything. On access points that have external antennas, you can change the gain to what the gain of the antenna is rated for. This changes the total EIRP of the AP.

  • Premiere CS3 Audio Gain issue

My machine at work was just upgraded to Premiere CS3 and I've noticed a couple of issues (bugs?) with it. I'll list them separately to keep things nice and neat. I did a search of both the forums and knowledgebase, but was unable to find what I was looking for.
When adjusting the volume for an audio clip using Audio Gain, the waveform for that clip is being adjusted as well. If you raise the volume, the waveform gets bigger. If you lower the volume, the waveform gets smaller. This wasn't the case in 1.5 and 2.0. Is there a way to disable this in CS3? Adjusting volume levels of, in my case, music tracks (mp3's, wav's) then trying to edit to the beat is much harder now since the waveform for that clip has been made smaller.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys might have. :)

That is awesome...I had not even noticed that happening on the waveforms. For all of the previous issues with waveforms redrawing and such, it's nice to see an improvement in that area.
And yeah, definitely not a bug. Howard's right...your statement alone makes the problem clear when you say you are adjusting volume using audio gain. Audio gain is for input, volume adjusts for output and you are correctly trying to adjust output level but you really ought to use the volume control in the effects tab for that, especially if you intend to increase/decrease volume during the presentation.
    Fun.

  • How to set Gain on analog Chs for MIO-16 E device?

The gain is automatically set based on the maximum and minimum values that are specified when you create a channel.

  • Migrate SCAN_Setup Gain List to DAQmx

I am migrating a traditional NI-DAQ application to NI-DAQmx.  I need to program the analog gain of my DSA device.  In traditional NI-DAQ, I used the Gain List parameter of SCAN_Setup.  So now I need to control the gain settings in DAQmx.  DAQmxCreateAOVoltageChan lets me program the Max and Min values.  This might be preferable in many situations, but I need to actually control the discrete gain selection.  Can someone tell me how?
The CVI help offers the heading, "Gain for DSA Devices."  It says, "The gain attributes/properties, AI.Gain and AO.Gain set the amount of gain to apply to the signal. These properties are set in decibels referenced to 10 V."  That sounds good.  But how do I set these attributes/properties in LabWindows/CVI?
It is important for me to have direct control over the discrete gain settings because I am designing a calibration system, and I want to periodically check the card's channel-channel calibration match at each gain setting.

    Good afternoon Jmoses,
If you have a look at your NI-DAQmx C Reference Help file, type in "Gain" under search.
You should come across these two functions:
    DAQmxSetAIGain
    DAQmxSetAOGain
That should get you started, best of luck on your project.

  • Photoshop - Some professionals say dot gain 20%, others gamma 2.2 ??????

Hallo, I print only to my inkjet at home, canon 4 ink epson 8 ink. In the colour management policy for photoshop cs3 within creative suite 3 I have set the Grey dot gain to gamma 2.2 instead of the default 20%. There seems to be about a 50/50 on this issue. the botom dot gain (Spot dot gain) this is not important for me.
Could someone clarify this situation because I have found no definitive explanations on the web about this issue. Even colour management tutorils seem always to avoid these issues.
    Tankyou, Chris.

    Chris,
What you do depends on a number of factors. Dot Gain is usually used when outputting to a press, since it is more likely to reflect press behavior than a gamma curve. If you had the 'average' actual dot gain for a given press, it would probably give you a closer match to a properly calibrated monitor.
If most of your work is either displayed on web, emailed or printed on an inkjet, gamma 2.2 is probably a better overall choice. The web and email are based on sRGB, which also has a gamma of 2.2, so your grascales will display more accurately online if you use gamma 2.2. As long as you use the correct printer profiles for printing (for your paper/ink/printer), your files will be converted so they look correct on your inkjet. The more accurate your profiles, the better the result.
Photoshop will take either your gamma 2.2 or 20% dot gain encoded file and convert the numbers to your printer profile.
Dot gain curves and gamma curves are not quite the same. You can see the effect if you wish as follows: convert a color original to gamma 2.2. Then, ASSIGN a 20% dot gain curve. Your overall image will look lighter than the gamma 2.2 original. Try assigning 25% and 30% dot gain curves, and as the dot gain increases, your file will appear darker. Although not all parts of a dot gain curve mirror a gamma curve precisely, it appears to me that a gamma 2.2 curve is fairly close to a dot gain of approximately 27% or so.
Probably more theory than you wanted. If you aren't going to a press, gamma 2.2 is a good bet and fairly flexible. But you can get good prints both ways.

  • Java ide productivity gain

    Hello -
I'm building a business case for a client regarding Return on Investment (ROI) of Java IDE (not necessarily JDevelopler). The client has 2 different non-IDE environments (one with microsoft products, the other with CORBA). The million dollar question is what productivity gain will they see by moving to a common Java IDE? Thank you.

Depends upon your staff, their training and understanding; your specific deployment method, your established infrastructure that you must stay within. sigh Productivity gain is relative to starting point, so your question can not be simply responded to without some way of knowing and measuring your current "productivity" and determining a method of projecting, via a metric, the target "productivity" produced by the use of the IDE.
What is your deployment target? Do you need to debug server side java?
Another example, if you use BC4J, and currently have no framework for dealing with databases in your Java... you may achieve great "productivity" by not writing your own custom layer. And then there is the "immediate" gain vs the gain over the long haul. ( maintaining/enhancing your proprietary custom layer, dealing with new situations that you didn't know about when you started, etc ).
Do you have well designed/built templates as a starting place... or will JDEV's wizards help generate code for you and remove a lot of muck work?
FWIW, I've seen folk use notepad and W95 to create complex Java apps/websites ( or for that matter C++ apps ) faster than fancy development IDEs for spot, narrowly focused and discrete tasks and projects. Those folk also knew how to use the web to find re-usable components quickly. Not that the resulting apps were all necessarily MAINTAINABLE.
I'm glad to discern that you are not looking at JDev as a "RAD" tool, or mistake it for a 4GL.
But when looking at JDEV as an Enterprise level database applications toolset for building Java/Web applications for the long haul... well... I picked it. grin
You might look at the JDEV 9i white paper. See closer integration for Repository, PL/SQL, UML modeling/Designer... etc.
Lastly, I think any IDE you get will NOT be a productivity gain until your staff has training in how to use it, has some time to learn the quirks and workarounds, determines how to set up infrastructure/standards... the first project will probably be a bear.. but AFTER the first project, if you persevered, kept the staff, and use the same approach and look/feel ( application/applet/jsp/servelet/ad nauseam ) then you should see fairly good productivity gain. What's fairly good? ( What's quality? I know it when I see it. )
    Heheh. Good Luck.

  • What is normalize dialog

I am still learning the program and have 2 questions: 1. What is normalize dialog? and 2. What does auto smart tone learning mean? I am using Premier Elements 12.
    Many thanks folks

Some supplemental information for your consideration
The path to the Normalize option in your Premiere Elements 12/12.1 (assumed on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit)
After you select/highlight the audio clip
    Clip Menu
    Audio Options
    Audio Gain
and, after you click on Audio Gain, the Clip Gain dialog comes up, and this dialog includes the Normalize button.
The following Adobe document describes "Normalize" and gives the details of how to adjust the input level of the clips with this option.
.Adobe Premiere Elements Help | Mixing audio and adjusting volume
Also, if you right click the Timeline audio clip
from the pop up menu, click on
    Audio Gain
to have the Clip Gain dialog appear
    Clip Gain dialog view
Please let us know if that works and what impact it had on your Timeline audio clips as your schedule permits.
    Thank you.

  • Normalize Audio levels on record???

We have built an internal application that uses Flash Media
Server 3 to allow people to create their own internal podcasts. The
app is written in Flex and uses netstream.attachaudio to record the
audio from the client to the FMS right through the browser/computer
mic. The problem is that sometimes the users speaks to low/loud
    etc.
Are there any options for me to 'normalize' the sound levels

processing after the stream is done.
    any suggestions out there?

Just in case it helps; This is not a runnable code, but code
can be derived easily from the logic.

  • Improving sound quality/volume of video

I've recorded some video from a church service, but the audio quality is fairly poor.  It would be nice to figure out a way to turn it "up" so you can hear it without cranking your speakers all the way up and blowing them out when you switch projects.
Is there a way to tinker with sound quality? All the features I've found involve adding audio... not altering any embedded audio.
Quick help is greatly appreciated. I'd like to have this video ready to ship tonight.

A couple of the most powerful audio features I discuss in my book is Normalizing and Audio Gain control.
To access them, right-click on an audio clip on your timeline and select Audio Gain.
You don't say which version of the program you're using but, in every version except version 8, clicking the Normalize button will automatically raise the audio gain for the clip so it sound fuller and louder. In version 8, this feature isn't turned on, so you have to type in a gain number manually.
When you close this option box, you'll see that the audio waveform for the clip is much fuller. It should go "wall to wall" without being so loud that it overmodulates and distorts. You can try a couple of Audio Gain settings until it looks about right. (Even better if you open the Audio Mixer, under the Window drop-down menu, and watch the levels. They should be full but not in the red.)
Lots more tips like that in my books, available on Amazon.com and at the Muvipix store!

  • Error -5000 Insufficient Access Privileges - Can anyone help?

Hi, I have been using logic since version 4.1 and have never had this problem. About 50% of the files I import or audio I record have problems when using the Audio editor in logic.. I can't do simple things like Normalize, Fade in/out/, Gain, Time & Pitch etc... All i keep getting back is 'Error -5000 Insufficient Access Privileges For Operation'. I've checked the files are on read & write however I cannot figure out why it will not let me do anything to the audio.. Any advice appreciated! Kai P.S I've updated to the latest Version of Logic Pro 7.2

You should run "repair permissions" for your hard drives.
Check the Apple Help manual on exactly how to do this,it's not hard to do.
This is not a Logic Issue, but a file management issue...Access privileges is a term to describe what access level you have on each file on your computer. If you don't have write access, you cannot edit the file.
    I hope this helps,
