Not connected to Internet when waking from sleep

Lately when my 13" MBA wakes from sleep, I get "you are not connected to the Internet" in Safari/FF, but other apps such as Skype stay connected.  The only recourse is a reboot.  Is there a fix?

Maybe reset the SMC and PRAM

  • IMac loses connection to network when waking from sleep

    Hi There,
We are a small mixed environment of Macs and PCs running on a Windows 2008 domain. One of 2 iMacs that now run Mountain Lion 10.8.5 is having problems when waking from sleep. One of our designers will go for lunch and the machine will sleep for about 30 to 40 minutes. Upon her return the iMac will kick her off of the 3 shares she usually logs into (2 are on Win2008 machines, and 1 is a MacPro running 10.6.8 Server).
If she has files open in any of the Creative Suite Apps, the app will crash and she will have to restart the whole machine. If no files are open then she can usually reconnect to the shares after a short while.  Obviously I told her not to leave any files open, but its causing her some headaches.
Its also creating srv errors (id 2012) on our domain controllers, when she tries to wake her machine.
This Imac is a late 2009, and we have a 2011 model that has no issues at all. Both are set exactly the same.
I have reset SMC, Pram, and rebinded to the domain, and searched through these forums quite a bit to no avail.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated.

I am continuing to work on this issue, and have tried a number of things based on searching here and elsewhere.
And Lucky Me, I have been able to replicate this behavior on one of other Macs (imac 2011, on 10.8.5). I also see errors on 2 separate Windows file servers on the domain (Event ID: srv 2012).
Below I am posting what seems to be the relevant area of the log.

This is from the 2011 iMac, and I see something very similar to this on the 2009 machine.
I continue to think this is a software issue related to 10.8.5 and Adobe CS (CS5 on the 2009 machine and CS 5.5 on the 2011) as this appears to have come up only since the recent update.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • New Mac Book Pro does not ask for password when waking from sleep

I've noticed that several others are having this problem. I have tried all of the suggestions on the other posts and have had no luck getting it to work.
I have it set to "require password to wake this computer from sleep or screensaver".
When I wake the computer in the morning it requires a password but if I wake it after and hour or two it does not. I have my screensaver set to turn on after 4 minutes but it never asks for a password when when I come back to my computer.
I think this is a bug and Apple should deal with it in a security update.
I'm open to any more suggestion though.
    Thanks,
    Tevadar

FYI, you can also lock your screen manually if you like. Launch Applications > Utilities > Keychain Access, select Keychain Access menu > Preferences > General tab, and check the box to "Show Status in Menu Bar." That places a padlock icon in your menu bar, and clicking on that will give you the option to Lock Screen.

  • MBP not connecting to internet when waking up

When I wake my two-week-old MacBook Pro up, my Airport Base Station's wireless network shows connection, but I do not have internet for a much, much longer period of time than normal. This only started a few days ago. Prior to that, it was working just fine.
I've tried closing my browser (Chrome), starting another browser (Safari), and restarting. All of these attempts have met with success and failure. Sometimes, doing nothing and waiting for ~2 minutes does the trick.
I'd simply like my MBP to connect to the internet ASAP upon waking up.
I did no software upgrades recently, so I'm not sure what's causing this sluggishness.

Delete the network your using system preferences, network advanced, re enter the preferred network you wish to use
If that does not correct the problem
    then reset the SMC

  • *No Internet When Waking From Sleep!*

    Hey everyone,
I have been having this problem for about 6 months now. When I put my computer to sleep, or it goes to sleep on its own and I wake it up, I can't access the internet. When I look at my network settings, it says I am connected to Ethernet and the green light is on. In order to access the internet, I have to unplug the Ethernet cable from the back of the computer, wait 10-15 seconds, and plug it back in. After that it will usually work. My cord has been tested, and has had new plug-in ends installed.
I am currently attending College and live on-campus; this problem only happens here, but it never happened when I had my older iMac G5 here, in the same room.
Help Please! I will be forever grateful to you!

Finally! Someone replied! haha. Okay, I'm a little confused about the instructions to reset the SMC. Apple says to shut down your computer, unplug all cables, wait 15 seconds, plug the mouse and keyboard back in and start your computer? That is it? Is it the fact that you only have the keyboard and mouse plugged in when you start the computer and nothing else? If that is the case, I reset the SMC almost every weekend when I bring my computer back and forth from home to school. I must be missing something here. I will look up how to reset the PRAM though.

  • Monitor Blanks in and Out When Waking From Sleep

Since getting my Mac Pro (with Apple installed RAM and NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT), I've noticed that the screen does not immediately turn on when waking from sleep, as my older Macs did. Rather, it turns on for a split second, goes blank for two seconds, turns on again for a split second, goes off again for a second or more, and then comes on permanently.
This behavior only occurs when waking from sleep; it does not occur when the monitor turns on from the active screen saver.
Is this normal for the MAC Pro with an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT? I have a HP w2408h monitor with a DVI to HDMI cable. Everything else works fine, including all video behavior.
    Thank you.

Hm. Bluetooth, interesting. Thanks for the idea.
I just opened the lid to see about the BT setting and the display didn't go off-on. The BT is off, I'm pretty sure I did that when setting it up as I don't use BT for anything.
I wasn't suspecting anything was seriously wrong, it's just that quick-on feature was highlighted as a selling point and I was curious about the glitch, if it was a setting I could change, for instance like you've highlighted. Annoying when things don't work as advertised.
And if I show the machine off to colleagues and friends, that will be a bad first impression they will want explained.

  • Drive sound when waking from sleep?

Hi, I am getting a short 2-3 second drive sound when I wake my MBP from sleep. It sounds like it is checking to see if there is a disc in the drive or something. Also might be described as the sound when your first put a disc into the drive(but maybe shorter). Is this normal? And also if it is normal is there a way to stop it from making the noise because I actually find it annoying me, I wake my computer from sleep a lot throughout the day. My friends MBP who bought his just a few months before mine does not make a sound when waking from sleep. Thanks.

They all do. All of them. Yours. Mine. Your friend's. Old PowerBooks. Brand new MBPs. Everything in between.
My friends MBP who bought his just a few months before mine does not make a sound when waking from sleep.
Maybe his optical drive is broken?
Or, more likely, it's not waking up from sleep at all - Energy Saver settings can be used to set the display to sleep before the MBP sleeps - a key press will "wake" the display, but the MBP itself was not asleep, thus no noise from the drive when it the display is reactivated.

  • My macbook pro (lion 10.7.2) takes several minutes to connect to the internet after waking from sleep.  Is there any way to make this instant?

    Hi
My Macbook Pro 15 inch takes several minutes to be able to connect to the internet after waking from sleep.  Does anyone else have this problem and is there a fix?

The message that comes up when I click on "TomTom Home Install" is "You cannot open Home Install because Power PC applications are no longer supported." Does this mean that the TomTom, which is absolutely vital to my life - well, not literally but you know what I mean - can no longer be used with my MacBook Pro?
What that means is that is can't be used with Lion 10.7.  PowerPC was the chip Apple used up until 2006 when they switched to Intel.  At that point, they created the Rosetta emulator to allow for PPC support for 5 years.  They finally dropped the support with the release of Lion.  It will only work with OS X 10.6 or earlier.  The other option is to purchase a new GPS, which can be had for $100 for a decent one.

  • Has anyone else noticed that: "The OS X Lion v10.7.3 Update includes Safari 5.1.3 and fixes that: Resolve a Wi-Fi connection issue when waking from sleep" didn't work?

I installed OS X Lion v10.7.3 because of the following claim.
The OS X Lion v10.7.3 Update includes Safari 5.1.3 and fixes that:
Resolve a Wi-Fi connection issue when waking from sleep
It continues to be a real pain having to reconnect to the network each time I wake my MacBook Air from sleep.
Does anyone have a suggestion for the resolution to this problem?

It seems the update fixed old problems for some and caused new problems for others. Sorry to hear you're in the latter group.
Here are some things to try.
    1. Go to System Preferences > Network, and click the gear icon under the network interfaces like so:
Whatever service order you have set, drag Wi-Fi either to the top (assuming it's not already there) or someplace else in the list. Click OK and then Apply. Sleep the system then wake it again to observe any changes.
    2. Click Wi-Fi in the above then click Advanced. Select all the networks your computer has ever joined and delete them with the "-" button. OK then Apply again. Select your network under the AirPort icon to re-join it. Sleep and wake again to see if that did anything.
    3. Try creating a new, temporary user account. Log in under that account to see if its behavior is any different.
You may have done all of these already but perhaps there is something you have not thought of. If nothing helps we may just have to wait a bit longer for Apple to release a fix.

  • Resolve a Wi-Fi connection issue when waking from sleep

    Hi,
In the recent release for Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 "Resolving a Wi-Fi connection issue when waking from sleep" was supposed to be resolved, not so at my end. Has anyone else encountered the same issue and if so will there be a resolve.
    Thank you

Hello BGreg and thank you for your answer,
I have alreadty read about this solution, and tried it.
I downloaded the 1.2 Go file, and applied it. And repaired permissions.
    Everything went fine.
Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem.
Meaning that when iMac wakes up, it doen't join my WiFi network.
I have to do it manually.
I don't know what to do : it is very strange because I never had that problem with OS 10.7.2 !
And my network setup has never changed.
    another info :
I noticed that in the network setup screen, when I want to close the little lock to restrain further modifications, it won't close. Weird !
Do you think I should call Apple Assistance ?

  • Keychain is read-only when waking from sleep

So, when waking from sleep my keychain becomes read-only and I'm forced to restart since many of the applications I tend to use (itunes, safari, skype. messages and disk utility) start giving me error messages or are unresponsive. I've tried repairing the keychain, deleting and creating a new keychain, reinstalling the OS (10.8), resetting the ACLs using the recovery partition, repairing permissions using the recovery partition. The only thing I haven't tried is wiping out the drive and installing the OS anew which I would like to avoid . I am on a 2010 13" macbook pro using 10.8.3. I don't think it started after an update. I did recently install a new hard drive since the previous hard drive died. I used time machine to restore my apps and user account. Advice anyone? Thanks

    Hello-
Well I spoke to soon. The problem started a few weeks later. Since then I have installed the OS on to a new hard drive. I did import my user account from a time machine backup but did not import the Apps and System settings. I created a new account and moved my media and documents from my old account to the new account. I then deleted the old account. After all that I am still getting the read-only problem with Keychain. It now happens while I am using my laptop, not just when it wakes from sleep. As I mentioned before the issue is intermittent, about once or twice a week. The last occurrence happened a few minutes after I booted up. I have pasted the log below. I have taken it in to Apple and they ran a check-up and everything came back ok. I'm concerned because my apple care ends in about a week. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  • Since updating to Lion the iMac won't recognise the external hard drive (maxtor) when waking from sleep mode,

Hi All, Since updating to Lion, my imac won't recognise the ext HDD (Maxtor) when waking from sleep mode, I have tried another port, diisc utility (Ext HDD not listed in here) but nothing works. I now find that I have to restart the imac to get the drive recognised..which is fine until the imac goes into sleep mode then I lose the drive and have to restart etc etc.....anyone suffering same issue.  The Ext Drive worked perfectly until the upgrade..

Thanks for this, and apologies for delay in replying...in between seeing your post I backed up the ext hdd to another mac and used the disc utility to erase and repair and then re mounted the ext hdd. OK.  I have then tested the ext hdd being recognised when waking from sleep mode a few times and everything appears to be fine. If this doesn't work (long term) I will follow the instructions as you have suggested....
I now have a new problem with my HP printer (Photosmart Plus) which is not being recognised by a new wireless router..Ok whilst the router is switch on and I have reconfigured the printer..but when the router is switched off overnight and then switched back on...I get a 'printer is not connected' message and have to go through the re configure routine all over. I am minded to think this is a router problem as the same issue is happening to my wifes Mac Book Pro (which is only a few weeks old)...any suggestions..

  • My MBP doesn't remember my Time Capsule wireless network when waking from sleep

My MBP (OS 10.5.8) doesn't remember my Time Capsule wireless network when waking from sleep.  Thus, every time my MBP wakes from sleep, I need to select the Airport icon in the upper menu bar, select "Join other network", enter SSID and password.  This is very cumbersome.  And, I never had this problem when I was using the ISP's provided wireless router/gateway/DSL modem. Adding the Time Capsule and using it to generate the wireless network has introduced this problem.
It appears that this problem has to do with the hidden SSID.  I don't need the lecture on how hidden SSID provides no serious security benefit.  That's why I have the WPA2 encryption.  I'm interested in a solution that will allow the Time Capsule to generate the wireless network, maintain a hidden SSID, continue to use WPA2 encryption, but have my MBP recognzie and autoconnect to this network.
    Solutions I've alread tried:
    1. Open Network Preferences
    2. Select Airport from left hand column (and ensure Airport is at top of that list)
    3.  Select Advanced
    4.  Delete all Preferred Networks.
    5.  Apply settings.
    6.  Restart computer
    7.  Return to Network Preferences and from Advanced page, manually add my network with hidden SSID and WPA2 password
This solution works fine as long as I don't take my computer elsewhere and connect to another network.  As soon as my preferred networks list gets another network, my MBP stops finding my TC network.  Since I take my laptop to a lot of places (it's a laptop, after all...) this is a problem.
As I say, prior to adding the TC on my network (and using it to generate the wireless network), my MBP had no problem keeping 50+ preferred network names/passwords in the Preferred Network list, but always automatically finding/connecting to my home network without the need to "Join other network."  Thus, I assume the problem lies with the Time Capsule.
    Any ideas?

LaPastenague, thanks for weighing in.  Didn't know that the hidden SSID capability was not IEEE standardized, and thus different devices will handle hidden SSID differently.  With my admittedly limited knowledge of how SSID/hidden SSID works, I'm still a little confused as to why my MBP would remember the generic router/gateway's hidden network, but struggle with the TC's hidden network.
To my knowledge, when an SSID is broadcast by a base station (Airport, wireless gateway, etc.), a connecting device (like a laptop, iPad, etc.) detects this broadcast--this would be a passive reception of this SSID signal.
When an SSID is hidden, the base station does not broadcast its identification.  Rather, a connecting device must transmit the name, and when the base station recognizes the broadcast, the connection is made. That's what you do when you select "Join another network" and manually enter the SSID.
The idea with OS X's Network Preferences is that these steps, whether for hidden networks or broadcast SSIDs, become automated.
Where is the potential for a different chipset between the TC and the previously used wireless router/gateway to alter this functionality?  Shouldn't the selection of an SSID by the MBP to broadcast to seek for a base station be a function solely on the MBP?  And once broadcast by the MBP, the TC should detect and reply?
Basically, the MBP can connect to the hidden TC manually just fine.  The MBP can connect to the old setup automatically just fine.  The MBP cannot connect to the TC automatically.  Aren't these automatic connection functions solely on the MBP?
I'll try un-hiding the network and re-verifying that the problem is exclusively with the hidden network.

  • Detect display when waking from sleep?

Is there any way to force the display detection when waking from sleep? I find that if the mini wakes before the monitor is on, i get a blank screen. When the monitor is on before waking, everything is normal.
I have the DVI-Detective, and the problem is actually worse when using it -- nothing is detected when waking up, no matter if the display is on or not.
    My specs:
    OS 10.5
    C2D, 2Ghz - 2GB RAM
    Sharp Aquos 52inch
All standard HD resolutions work fine - it's just now a matter if figuring out how to force the mini to detect the display...
Surely there must be a way to do this?

Great that you got it working. It seems what is happening when the TV is switched off is that the Mac can no longer see the EDID data. Basically, it's the same as if a hot-unplug event had occurred from OS X's perspective. The mini thinks the TV's video cable has been unplugged, so it thinks it is running headless, which of course it is not. And for some reason not completely clear to me, when the TV's power is restored, a hot-replug event is not triggered and the mini still thinks it's running headless. Maybe you are right that it is removed from the list of connected devices for good. But it isn't supposed to work like that.
The DVI Detective is the right tool for the job in cases like this, so it's good you have one and it's good you got it working. I agree it would be nice if there was more override control within OS X for times like this when things go wrong. But if more TV and 2nd/3rd tier monitor makers paid more attention to computer plug-and-play, then these things would work right in the first place. Your TV is in violation of the plug-and-play standard because the standard calls for the host (Mac mini in this case) to be able to power the ROM and I2C bus within the TV even if the TV is in a powered down state. Clearly your TV isn't doing this.

  • Resolution change when waking from Sleep

I will at times hook up my MBP to a plasma display to show photos. Now-sometimes when waking from sleep (and not attached to an external monitor), it reverts back to 800x600. I have to go to SP to displays and re-detect the MacBook display. Unpredictable and frustrating.

Lets get a few details straightened out first:
    1. What cable are you using to connect? DVI, VGA, HDMI, component, composite, s-video, etc.?
    2. What resolution is it when you connect? If your plasma is an HDTV, it is capable of taking much higher than 800x600, so depending on the cable you use, you can adjust that to make it higher or even the same native resolution.
    3. When you disconnect, is the computer running, or closed/sleeping? If you close, then disconnect, it might think the display is still connected. Or, rather, after switching resolutions back, later on when you open it up it suddly changes to a lower res?
In the meantime, in system prefs, in "Displays" check the box that says "Show displays in menu bar" and then you will get a menu up top to choose your displays and resolution sizes. That will at least make it easier to change.
