Not impressed with Snow Leopard

i upgraded to Snow Leopard, thinking it would make my computer run more efficiently, and expecting some of the problems with programs that were present in Leopard to be resolved (this was promised in the description of the upgrade on the apple website). Unfortunately, I almost want to revert back to Leopard, as Snow Leopard appears to have done more harm than good for my system.
The computer actually seems to be running more slowly, and programs take up more power than before, so the battery dies faster and takes longer to charge fully. Also, before Snow Leopard, iChat had been crashing occasionally when video chatting in full screen mode, but now it barely works at all! I have to try several times to start a video conference, and even then it crashes more often than it ever did before.
My browser runs less efficiently as well, and Safari frequently quits altogether, which is very frustrating. I am not sure what was improved in this upgrade, but I think there might still be a great deal of work to be done here, and that perhaps Snow Leopard was released too soon.
I have one of the newer models of Macbook; I bought it last December, so it is not even a year old. This shouldn't have anything to do with the issues I am having with Snow Leopard.
Is anybody else having these problems, or does anybody know if there is anything I can do? Is there a way to go back to Leopard??
Thanks!

The update is only good for Mac's listed in this About the Performance update.

I have seen this mentioned a dozen times, here, on Lion, and MacRumors.
    Nope. Usual suspects.
And whether you tried a clean install instead (backup and erase) and then use MA to import

According to Roaring Apps, there is a version of Protools compatible with Lion.  But you may need Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to buy either Lion or ML on MAS.   It looks like you need to get up-to-date with your OS and the apps too.

  • Leopard TM backups are NOT compatible with Snow Leopard

I just discovered while upgrading to Snow Leopard that Time Machine backups made in Leopard are not compatible with Snow Leopard at this time. So, for those of you who are considering upgrading to Snow Leopard using your TM backups to restore your data, the TM backup will not be recognised by Snow Leopard.
I called Apple Care to check this when I went to restore my data as I had done an Erase and Install, and they confirmed that I would have to either:
    a) use the data on my TM drive as any other data only backup, or
    b) re-inslall Leopard, restore the TM backup, then upgrade to Snow Leopard rather than erase and install.
    For info

    Scott in MD wrote:
Incidentally, yes, the "package" file is the in.Progress file. It seems to have the incremental updates, since it's a real big file, and has very recent entries. Again the last set of timestamped folders (i.e. a full backup) was over a year ago.
No, something's very wrong. All (completed) TM backups are the same.
Inside the Backups.backupdb folder should be a single folder with your computer name; inside that should be a series of folders with the date & time of each remaining backup, plus the Latest folder which is an alias to the most recent of the date & time folders, except an "in.Progress" folder.
The "in.Progress" folder is an incomplete (failed or cancelled) backup, and is ignored in all TM displays, since it's unusable.
In any event I have not deleted or changed any of the files. Also the stuff in the "Latest" folder is over a year old. But I've had TM running the whole time.
So does that mean (I'm hoping) that my recent stuff will be recovered from the inProgress file if I can ever get this working? Or does it mean I'm screwed anyways, because the best I can get is the files from the Latest or most recent timestamped folder (again, both a year back).
First, run +*Repair Disk+* again (and again) until it either fixes all the errors or can't fix any more. If it can't fix any more, it's barely possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party app such as +DiskWarrior 4.2+ can (it's about $100).
Let's see if DU can fix it on a second pass. Hopefully it will, and the problem was preventing the more recent backups from appearing.

  • Canon MP620 print driver does not work with Snow Leopard

Bought a Macbook & bundled Canon MP620 printer in Dec 08. Two days ago upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I can no longer print (the printer is not recognized), it only sees "Bonjour scanner" (the printer is a multi-function printer, copier, fax, scanner). Spent more than two hours with two different Apple tech support people over the phone; talked to Apple personnel in store. My printer is connected via Ethernet cable to a wireless modem, and I connect to the wireless modem via Airport. The phone tech person insisted that this printer is supported by Snow Leopard, but we reloaded the print driver from the Snow Leopard installation disk with no results. Finally my last resort, which worked, is to go to Radio Shack and get a cable that has a USB-A (printer) to USB-B (Mac) attachment. I was able to print. It is unacceptable for Apple to have this problem, as I went into the store four different times to discuss whether I should upgrade to Snow Leopard, and was told on every occasion that Snow Leopard will make everything run faster, more smoothy, etc. NOT! I want Apple to post a notice on their web site to a) confirm their print driver problems with Snow Leopard and b) to confirm WHEN new print drivers will be released.

Have a look at my last posting re Canon network printing.

i got my MP980 working via Ethernet and wireless. The same procedure should work for your MP620.

  • Colors not consistent with Snow Leopard 10.6 on an Eizo SX2761W monitor

I am unable to get any color consistency with Snow Leopard 10.6 on my Eizo SX2761W display.
Most of the actual "content" (i.e. images, videos, websites, etc.) is displayed very saturated and dark, much more saturated and dark than in 10.5.8. I presume that's because of Snow Leopard's new gamma value. The problem is, all of OS X's GUI elements, like the dock, icons and color labels in the finder, title bar buttons, etc. are not displayed in the same manner. These elements are all very desaturated, pale and grayish. NoMachine NX sessions running in X11 (via Rosetta) also have this desaturated look in Snow Leopard.
Here's a screenshot comparison I put together, that shows those color inconsistencies using the example of Mozilla's Firefox logo on the web in Safari, on the web in an NX session and as an icon in the Finder and in the Dock:
    http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/7276/SnowLeopard-ColorsAndContrast.png (1 MB)
As far as I could test it, I get these color/contrast discrepancies only on the Eizo SX2761W monitor. I checked this on a classic Mac Pro and a late Mac mini with the same results. On a MacBook and its internal display Snow Leopard's colors seem consistent.
I tried to recalibrate the SX2761W profile, I tried out all the other standard color profiles available in Snow Leopard, I tried to copy my old profiles over from a Leopard backup, but I was unable to get rid of the display inconsistencies. After a whole day of trying and tinkering I went back to 10.5.8 to get a consistent color environment back.
Any ideas what's causing this and more importantly what to do about it? I have to say I'm at my wits end. The only thing I can think of is mailing this issue to Apple in the hope there will be a point release in the not too distant future that fixes the problem.

I have what I assume is the same problem. It just started today on my DELL WFP2407 - but remains even when switching to my MacBook Pro's built in screen.
The Dock, Safari, the desktop background - and probably other colour managed applications; all show very pale blue hues with over saturated red. Blue goes towards purple and other colours get muddled and pale. Oddly the Finder displays colours correctly on icons, but not the dock. I took a screenshot of Finder's Safari icon next to The Dock's:
    http://www.nuxx.dk/hosting/paledock.png
    - Clearly showing significant inconsistency... I just updated to 10.6.1 which didn't change anything.
Needless to say I tried calibrating a new colour profile to no effect, and seeing as the finder itself renders things just fine I'm not sure that's where the issue lies.
This is a huge problem for me, I hope there is a simple solution.

  • New Macs not shipping with Snow Leopard?

I just bought 2 Mac Minis for media playback use; I ordered them on 9/9 and figured they'd come with Snow Leopard (the Apple Store has a "ships with Snow Leopard" banner at the upper right, even).
However, they both shipped with 10.5.6 installed, and a DVD in the box also with 10.5.6 - no sign of Snow Leopard.
Any ideas on what's the best way to get this remedied? Visit a store, or phone support? I just spent 10 minutes clicking around support.apple.com but it kept sending me in circles.

    Ha
I called support -- they did help me out, but it went like this
Me: Hi, I just ordered 2 Mac Minis, they said they'd come with Snow Leopard but when they arrived they had only Leopard
Support: do you have the Mac on right now?
Me: No, not now, but I do have serial numbers and order number
Support: Oh. Because a couple people have complained about that, and I was able to help them click on the Apple menu and say About This Mac and see that the version number was 10.6.
Me: Er, no, I'm not that [must... resist... urge... to... say... "clueless"...] ... hasty. I'm quite positive that the preinstalled version, and the only DVD in the box, was 10.5.6.
Support: Oh. I'm sorry. Well, have you heard about our up-to-date program? [http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate>
Me: Yes, but I'm not interested in paying $20 for stuff that was supposed to come with what I already ordered.
    Support: It's not $20, it's $9.95.
Me: Right. And I need two of them. Sorry I was off by 10 cents, but I'm not interested in paying anything at all for this, actually.
Support: OK, let me look into this.
    ... long pause
Support: OK, and you've checked the entire box, and the version number, and it's not 10.6.
Me: Yup, quite carefully, a number of times now.
and then some more pauses, confirmations that I did check the installed versions, and apologies for the slip up, and they're sending me the upgrade.
So, in general, helpful, though this whole thing has been an extra set of hassles I wasn't expecting... Fight Club had it right, "the things you own end up owning you".

  • FireWire ports on display not working with Snow Leopard Mac Pro

I just bought a new quad core Mac Pro with Snow Leopard and I have connected it to my three year- old Apple 23 inch cinema display and everything works fine....except for the Firewire 400 ports on the display. They no longer recognize my external iSight camera or external hard drives. And of course the devices will not connect to the computer's 800 ports. Anyone come across this, or have any solutions? I've tried connecting and reconnecting and have repaired permissions. Thanks.

This means that my Firewire 400 ports on the display are no longer supported by the computer?
They need a FireWire connection to the computer. With older computers, the FireWire cable from the display would plug in to a computer FW400 port to provide the connection. With FW800 only computers, you need the adapter.

  • M-Audio MIDISPORT UNO USB Not Working With Snow Leopard

My Snow Leopard installation worked fine except until I plugged in my MacBook to my Casio Privia with the M=Audio MIDISPORT UNO USB cable to run GarageBand. I'm getting a MIDI error which states it can't work with the latest operating system. It doesn't surprise me though for all the software and hardware driver updates that have to catch up to such a new OSX 10.6. I went to the M-Audio site to download the latest driver, but the drivers only were compatible with OSX10.5.8.
This is an alert at the site
Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Support Coming Soon
Avid/M-Audio working closely with Apple to offer support for OS X 10.6
Avid/M-Audio is pleased to hear that Apple has released Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. We’ve been working closely with Apple to bring Snow Leopard support to the M-Audio® product line, as well as the Pro Tools® product line and extended product families. We ask that all existing Mac users please wait to upgrade until we officially announce Snow Leopard support. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.
This is a bit of a concern, because I need to get GarageBand running again with the MIDI hook ups. Is there a work around anyone knows about to get MIDI working with Snow Leopard.
    Thanks Steve

I ran into a similar problem. I discovered one thing which may help you out though. It works OK with my Yamaha P200 keyboard but it does not work with my Yamaha NP30 keyboard. I looked at the MIDI stream and the only difference seems to be that the NP30 sends a continuous stream of MIDI clock, whereas the P200 does not. My theory is that this clock stream is somehow confusing the driver. I can't seem to disable the MIDI clock on my NP30 but if your Privia has the ability to disable MIDI clock, then it may be worth a try as it will probably fix the problem until they come out with the proper drivers.

  • Novatel Wireless Merlin X950D not working with Snow Leopard

I've just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard and my Merlin X950D 3G broadband card has stopped working.
When I insert the card sometimes it's detected but won't connect, sometimes it's detected but only after being inserted for some time (5 mins or longer) and still won't connect, other times it's just not being detected at all.
I've tried on a clean install of Snow Leopard using the built-in WWAN drivers and I've also tried with Novatel's drivers. In both cases I've tried booting Snow Leopard in 32 and 64 bit modes. Can't think what else to do; has anyone got any ideas?

    I found a solution.
Download the older Novatel drivers (2.2.3) from this site:
    http://www.nvtl.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=174:macosxtiger -novatelevdo&catid=42:mac-installation-i
After a reboot, your modem will work fine. Something in the 3.0 drivers is incompatible with Snow Leopard.

After a couple of days of problems with Snow Leopard and flash, safari etc... I figured out the problem is with my account.
I created a new admin account and everything seems to be working. Well almost.
a couple of things I've noticed are right clicking on dock icons does nothing, no option to quit or keep in dock.
Apple Techs', had me change my account months ago to fix a problem with safari crashing. It didn't really work and more problems resulted.
*So now my big question is: How do I move need items over to the new account.* I don't want to move everything over as I might bring what caused the problem in the first place.
What I need are several apps,(like ilife, iwork, firefox, devonthink, 1password etc.) downloads, desktop, docs, files, and book marks.
*What is the best way for me to do this?* Is there anything I need to do re: Snow Leopard on the new account?
I feel like I have a new and functioning Mac again just around the corner.
    Looking for your help, thanks,

  • SP3 not installing with Snow Leopard

I've been trying to reinstall Windows XP partitioned on my new mac along with Snow Leopard. The Service Pack 3 will not install with the XP and many errors pop up. I do have SP2 installed and windows is running fine except when trying to update the software to SP3.

  • HP LaserJet P1005 not working with Snow Leopard

Has anyone managed to get this printer to work with Snow Leopard 10.6? I have installed the latest drivers* from the HP website which BTW do not say they support 10.6 , see http://is.gd/2DfcE
*Not sure exactly what the version number of the drivers is. The website says they are version 1.0.7, but when installed they show version 1.0.6
I either get nothing coming out of the printer or an error "PrintJobMgr quit unexpectedly - This report will be sent to Apple automatically".

    From this web page:
Here are some troubleshooting steps you can use if there is an issue:
Ensure the printer is connected, has power, has ink / toner, paper, and no alerts on its built-in display.
Network based printers should be on the same subnet; you shouldn't have to worry about this if your printer is on your home network.
Use Software Update for the latest available updates.
Delete the affected printer from Printer & Fax System Preferences, then re-add the printer.
If the issue persists, reset printing system as described below, then re-add the printer.
If the issue persists, contact the printer vendor and/or visit their website for printer software and support.
