Not waking up monitor

My MacBook Pro 2 Ghz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB DDR3 RAM won't wake up an external monitor. I will also get an occasion "snow shower" on teh monitor then it dies. i have to restart the machine or unplug the Thunderbolt connector to get it to work again. Now, today, I can't get the external monitor to wake up at all with the Mac closed. help?

having similar issues with a MBP 17" 2011 and an Acer 2616W. upon restart, whether in Mac or Windows, the external monitor is only occasionally detected by the computer. Did not have this issue with my 2010 MBP, or any of my other macs, but only the 2 different 2011 models I have tried.
One thing I have found to work around this issue is to use the power button on the monitor, and turn off the monitor for a few seconds while the computer is trying to find it. After turning the monitor back on, the MBP will find and display the correct resolution about 90% of the time. Other 10%, I have to turn off, then back on again.
Hope this helps, hope Apple fixes the issue soon.

Display Preferences does not detect dual monitors.
    There is no workaround here.
Only a prompt update from apple will solve this.
Any level 5 geniuses I welcome your guidance... please prove me otherwise.

    Hi marconi de baloni,
Thanks for the question. Based on what you stated, it seems like the computer is not recognizing a second display. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
OS X Yosemite: Connect multiple displays to your Mac
If a display is not recognized, choose Apple menu > System Preferences on the primary Mac, click Displays, then click Display.
Open the Display pane for me
Then click the Detect Displays button.
You can also try putting your Mac to sleep and then waking it.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • Macbook not waking up from 'sleep'

    Hi there,
I got an really annoying Problem with my 4-Month old Macbook Pro and I hope you guys here can help.
My Macbook Pro does not wake up from sleep, the sleep indicator is solid and not pulsating at all.
The strange thing is, when I initiate Standby the sleep indicator is pulsating, also I can wake my mac up. So my macbook is not waking up if it goes to sleep by its self.
In Addition it is possible to wake my macbook up few seconds after it automatically goes to sleep.
But if is goes to sleep automatically and I don't touch it for few hours I cannot wake it up again.
I already did a PRAM, SMC reset. no change.
Maybe I should mention that my macbook pro is hooked up on an external Display. But not directly connected, there is a kvm switch in between. So I can switch between PC1(PC1Display) & MAC1(PC1Display+MAC1Display) Configurations.
any ideas what the problem could be?
    Thanks, TimmyX

I seem to be having the problem as well.
Occasionally when waking it will work. the machine wakes up to a white screen and a little progress bar at the bottom. then the screen comes back.
other times the screen stays black. it seems the computer itself is not sleeping but the screen is black and the Fkeys don't work to either to either change the dim settings on the monitor or keyboard.
I usually have to force shut down the computer to get it back.
I tried the fix I found online about turing off the ethernet port then re activating it after a restart and that seemed to work.
Then I updated to 10.6.2 (using the combo updater NOT software update) and the problem is back.
I now have done the ethernet off and on fix again. I hope it will wor.
I have found a lot opf people with this problem...
I did a clean install of 10.6 and then used migration assistant for my files and prefs... but not my applications since I was migrating from a powerbook g4.
Maybe some pref or setting that was migrated for many of us is causing it...
Are there others with the problem who are on a NEW mac without any migration?
Hope we can help get to the bottom of this.

  • Waking computer monitors from sleep causes FCP capture to fail

I'm having trouble capturing DVCam material from an HDV deck (in PAL), using FCP 6.0.3. As I'm doing a long digitize (several hours of material at a time), I like to put my monitors to sleep while capturing. Normally, this works fine (and hasn't caused any problems - I've been doing this for a long time). On this current project, every time I wake the monitors to check the progress of digitizing, it appears to cause FCP & cancel capturing the clip that it is currently capturing.
I've cleared out & reset all of my preferences, zapped the P-Ram, made sure that there is plenty of room on the USB 2.0 drive that I'm capturing the material to (it's a 1TB drive with about 850gb's of material already on it).
Does anybody have a suggestion for me about why waking the monitors would be throwing the capturing process out of whack?

I've ... made sure that there is plenty of room on the USB 2.0 drive that I'm capturing the material to (it's a 1TB drive with about 850gb's of material already on it).
You're capturing to an 85% full USB2.0 drive ?? I'm betting that when you wake the monitor you're seeing an error ... but not because of the waking of the monitor! FWIW you should always try to keep your drives less than 80% full ... beyond that and you're asking for serious performance degradation. That and of course USB drives are wholly unsuited for video production with FCP. (FCP really doesn't like devices that cannot handle sustained data transfer).
That said, what monitor are you using? How are you putting them to "sleep"? How are you waking them? Exactly is the error that you are seeing .. or is there no error but the capture just stops? Do you lose all the footage captured to that point or do you at least keep the footage captured so far?

  • G5 does not Allways Wake Monitor From Sleep

My original post on 12/02 was:
One month ago my G5 Dual 2Gz started to have problems waking the monitor in a oattern of almost every 5 days (11/02, 11/07, 11/12, 11/16, 11/22, 11/27, & 12/02) , No new hardware has been installed or updated in the three weeks before this started or since. Actually this computer has not been used much accept for email, Safari, and streaming music lately. Both the monitor and tower are in the sleep mode for long periods of time.Have run the normal premissions repair and disk utility with normal results. I have tried restting the PMU and PRAM in the past. When it happens I do a hard shutdown and restart which starts the monitor. The only common thing I have noticed is that it is usually very cold in the computer room when this happens, such as first thing in the morning or late at night.
Not sure how to tackle this problem much less solve it. Does anyone have any ideas where I should go from here?
Five days later on 12/09 we have a new wrinkle as when I went in to wake the G5 it had shutdoown by itself during the nite! Now I am really confused as to what to do. Any ideas?

  • My imac will not detect external monitor after recent update. Is there a way to fix this?

I have a VGA monitor plugged in to my imac using the VGA adapter to the mini-DVI.  All was working well.  Since I updated over the weekend, the computer will not detect the monitor.
Any ideas how to fix this?

    Pcantin wrote:
I have tried another VGA monitor and that failed as well.  Since you don't think the update was the cause, it may be that the adapter I am using decided to call it quits.  I will see if I can find another and test that out.
I will look into the external drive idea as well.
Thanks for your help on this.
I didn't think about the adaptor, but you should at least visually inspect both the adaptor and the cable at both ends. If one or more pins got bent even slightly the connection might fail. The cables can also fail internally. Replacing the adaptor and cable may be the quickest thing to do initially. If you want to try to save money, first replace the adaptor, and if the problem persists, then go replace the cable (or vice versa).

  • Macbook pro(2008 later) can not recognise external monitor(NEC UXI2090) with mini-DP to DVI adapter with 9600GT

I bought mini-DP to DVI frome Apple several monthes ago and it worked well in that time until yesterday the external monitor show me no signal sign. Other PCs were connected with the same cable and monitor and they are fine. I am wondering there is something wrong in the adaptor or macbook pro. Furthermore I found the external monitor can display nornally when I switched to 9400 graphic card and used mini-DP to VGA adapter. If I switch to 9600GT no signal again. If I switch 9400 using mini-DVI, it is shown on the external screening: Out of range... In a word, In the mode of 9600GT, mac can not recognise external monitor(I can not detect it in the systerm preference even I press detect display buttun) and 9400 works in VGA mode. However when I connect adapter to mac, the screen showed blue flash.
I reseted SMC, no use; I created a new account or enter mac to safe mode, no use; so far I did not reseted PRAM beacuse of something wrong of my system. I am downlaoding Mountain Lion OS and will install it. Then I will reset PRAM and try again.
I do not know whether I shoud change the adapter or the single-link DVI cable to dual-link. Someone said it is useful in their condition. I tried some methods from BBS, such as connected when devices were off and then open, and so on. I failed.
    Any suggestion for this problem?
    Addition: OS: 10.7.4(Lion)

I turns out that the logic board of my MacBook Pro was faulty (despite being brand new).
I took it to the Apple Store, presented the problem, and one of the Tech's came to the same conclusion that I had -- hardware failure.  Phone support was no help in the matter (and even told me that what I was trying to do wasn't a supported option, which is rediculous).  However, the Genius Bar did take care of the problem, and my MacBook Pro was back to me with a replaced logic board within a few days.
    Hope that htis helps.

  • MacBook Pro does not sense external monitor (Panasonic HDTV in my case) via thunderbolt-HDMI connection...Is update 10.8.3 helping anyone?

My MacBook Pro (newest model in 2013 so far) does not sense external monitor (Panasonic HDTV in my case) via thunderbolt-HDMI connection...Is update 10.8.3 helping anyone else who has this issue? I returned my multiple HDMI adapters after figuring out it had to be an Apple issue n not the adapters so I can't check it myself now.
    Thanks!

I have late 2012 MBP 13" and connect to my Panasonic Plasma correctly.
But using the same cable, can't connect to an LG 47LM6200, the MBP detects the TV, the screen blinks blue, but the TV shows "no sinal detected" message.

  • Not Detecting Dual Monitor

I've got a 4870 card and connected the DVI port to a 27 inch Samsung and the mini-display port via the $99 mini-display to dual link DVI adaptor to a 23 inch Samsung. This set-up worked fine with 2 of the 23 inch Samsung, but now it is only detecting the monitor connected to the DVI port. It is not detecting the monitor through the dual ink adaptor.
I swapped around to eliminate other variables, and also tried unplugging from the DVI port and running the mini-display to dual link alone: nothing.
The mini-display adapter is working fine with my wife's macbook pro. As mentioned, this set-up works fine with two 23 inch monitors. Any thoughts of what I might try?

In searching, saw what Martin Pace wrote in another post on this: first, make sure the mini-display port is fully plugged in! There's a fair degree of resistance over a distance, so it's easy to think it's in and be afraid of forcing it. Of course, plugging in makes it work instantly.
So Martin, if you reply, I'll give you a solved!

  • Can you WIRELESSLY connect a macbook pro to a monitor to have extra work space on a separate screen from your macbook? (not mirror, extra monitor/workspace)

Can you WIRELESSLY connect a macbook pro to a monitor to have extra work space on a separate screen from your macbook? (not mirror, extra monitor/workspace)
    It needs to be wireless.
I am not asking about mirroring, but as a second screen.
Apple tv communties said the Apple tv cannot do this, but maybe another type device can?

My thunderbolt port stopped working on my late 2011 MacBook Pro rendering my external monitor useless--or so I thought.
Mac Genius suggested using the Apple TV via AirPlay Display as a $100 solution. Took me all of 6 minutes to figure this out as there are no directions in the Apple TV box supporting this. But, it does work and I am now back in business.
PS. Don't set up with bluetooth--seems logical but you want to use AirPlay Display under Settings > Displays.
Also, I originally thought my external monitor stopped working because I upgraded the OS. This time, it was definitely a hardware issue and not software. It also fixed a known sound issue my monitor had with Macs. First time in my 15 years I've ever had a ViewSonic have issues with an Apple product, too. Thanfully, it is now fixed.
    Hope this helps.

  • Computers not waking up to install updates

    Hi,
I wonder if someone will be able to help me. WSUS server is configured and working correctly. GPO settings are configured to wake up computers at 3AM, install and reboot them (use power management to wake up computers is enabled). All PCs are running Windows
8.1 Pro and they are domain joined. No problems are reported with group policy.
The problem is that computers are not waking up at all and users are forced to install updates and reboot them themselves. Is there a setting I'm missing?
    Best,
    Marcin

Enabling Windows Update Power Management to automatically wake up the system to install scheduled updates (WSUS 3.0)
Specifies whether the Windows Update will use the Windows Power Management features to automatically wake up the system from hibernation, if there are updates scheduled for installation.
Windows Update will only automatically wake up the system if Windows Update is configured to install updates automatically. If the system is in hibernation when the scheduled install time occurs and there are updates to be applied, then Windows Update will
use the Windows Power management features to automatically wake the system up to install the updates.
Windows update will also wake the system up and install an update if an install deadline occurs.
The system will not wake unless there are updates to be installed.  If the system is on battery power, when Windows Update wakes it up, it will not install updates and the system will automatically return to hibernation in 2

  • Error: Could not initialize ORB monitoring

    Hi All,
I use Java application client to access SunONE 7 (final release, not beta) and got an error below.
    1. The error was printed on screen, not thrown to program (any error should thrown to the program, so we know that).
    2. It seems no harm. My program still functions right.
What was wrong? Any thing I should do?
    Any information would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
