Nothing will open in a new tab.

Normally, when you click a link, it opens in the current tab. If you want to open a link in a new tab instead, just right-click on the link and select Open Link in New Tab from the context menu. This option no longer works since I upgraded to the current version of firefox. Nothing will open in a new tab.
I disabled my addons and went one by one restoring them to look for an interfering addon. But when I did this Firefox worked fine and the "Open in New Tab" function worked as well as links designed to open in a new tab rather than the current window worked.
But, shortly after that the problem reappeared. I did the disable addons and reapplied them one by one. I ran CCleaner and Glary's Utilities and Spybot Search & Destroy and my anti-virus scanner (Comodo Anti-Virus & Firewall)

Well, I already did that with the previous version of FF when this started. I t got worse with FF v.9.
I went to a Mozilla web page that checked plugins to see if they were up to date. All of them were.
But, when I had this "Tab" problem before I remembered a solution that mentioned something about Java or Java Script being involved. The plugin test page showed no Java Plugin(s).
So, I went to the Java/Oracle website and downloaded and updated Java. Later that night I had full joy with the tabbed browsing in Firefox v.9.0.1.
Problem is solved.

  • How do I get new tabs to function? Nothing will open in a new tab.

I cannot use new tabs. I use right-click and "Open in New Tab" and the tab is there but the focus does not switch to it. I can right-click on the tab and "Open in New Window" but not a new tab. If I close the first tab, to the left, the unfocused, unavailable tab opens but, then it is the only tab open.
So, I do not have tabbed browsing on the latest version of Firefox.

  • How do I make it the default that when I click on a link it will open in a new tab?

Particularly when I am doing a Google search, but also when I am in a site, I find I frequently have to right click and force 'open in a new tab' to avoid the link overriding the current tab. I want to have all links I click on automatically open in a new tab. My settings are set to go to the new tab immediately - that works fine - but too often I have to immediately back-page and re-click using the right-click menu to avoid losing my search or origin page. This is annoying when there are several links I want to explore, and have to backtrack to get to them.
Firefox is my default browser, 29.0.1 at the moment, and it runs on an old Dell laptop using WinXP. Before asking this I did check the available support info without finding an answer. I followed the instructions in the article about Google and the about:config but it did no good - it still defaults to opening in the current tab. It might seem like a small thing but in my search for answers I saw some folks who have the reverse problem - they want links to open in the same tab - so clearly it is a settings issue. How do I fine tune mine to get the result I prefer? Thanks!!

Google search and other websites have a user preference that can be set to open a search result in a new tab or a new window, for users who are logged in to their website.
Otherwise, when you don't have a 3-button mouse or a scroll pad with "middle-click" functionality, you can use '''{Ctrl + Click}''' to open a hyperlink in a new Tab.

  • How can I force a link to open in a new tab on a Mac!?

On Mac, CMD + Click only opens a link in a new tab if that link is located on that same subdomain and domain. If the link goes to another domain or subdomain it will just ignore the click!!!
For example, on www.cnn.com I can CMD+Click on a number of article and they will open in a new tab. However, if the article is to a money.cnn.com or to some other website my CMD+click will be ignored.
Also, would be nice to do the same in gmail. Actually, in gmail the link opens in another tab, but you are forced into that tab, so again the expected behavior of opening in another tab while remaining on the current page is being ignored.
Seems to be an ongoing issue for a few years a no one has provided a decent answer other than install a plug-in. Also, several 'about:config' options I've read about only talk about behavior when opening a new window, nothing dealing with the ignored clicks.

guig2, thanks for the response, but I don't believe this will help. Of the TABs options in preferences the only possibly relevant one is to force a link that would normally open in a new window to open as a tab instead.
As for the plugin the two 'secret options' it talks about, I have already tried, which are basically a twist on the preference options.
It also seems from the reviews of the plugin that it doesn't always work, or doesn't allow you to select which site open in a new tab, which is what I want.
Is there some way to force firefox to interpret CMD+Click as a right-click->"Open in new tab," basically the context menu always works and is the expected behavior for CMD+Click (which doesn't always do this, possible due to the page modifying the behavior).

  • Can I get links to automatically open in a new tab just by clicking on them?

I've selected the option to: "Open new windows in new tab instead" from the options menu. For some time this seemed to open any link I clicked on in a new tab. For some reason this feature is no longer working and new links clicked on simply overwrites the current tab with the new page. I liked the feature of having links open automatically in new tabs. The option remains selected but it does not seem to be working.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

Standard Firefox behavior is left-click will open a link or bookmark in the currently selected tab, over-writing whatever is in that tab. The definition for the option "Open new windows in a new tab instead" is:
''Open new windows in a new tab instead: This option preference controls whether ~~red:links from other applications~~ ~~blue:or from web pages '''which request to open them in new windows'''~~ are opened in a new window or a new tab in the most recent window. ''

A <u>'''middle-click'''</u> on a link or bookmark will open in a new tab (middle-click = press the scroll wheel). <u>'''Ctrl+left-click'''</u> will also open a link or bookmark in a new tab.

  • How do I get a favorite or bookmark to open in a new tab automatically, not in the one I am working in? The tab options/settings are unhelpful.

I have 2 laptops. Both have Firefox as my number one preference.
One computer, is set up correctly, If I am on a site, tap on a bookmark site, it will open in a new tab and not interfere with my current tab. It's wonderful.
The other Firefox, if I click a bookmark it will open in the CURRENT tab, changing the tab to the selected bookmark.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled FF, but that did not correct the issue. I have read the tab options and help desk, but that doesnt help either.
    ANY HELP? :)
    -Kristen

There is no built-in setting for redirecting a bookmark to a new tab.
Is it possible that the computer which does that has an add-on such as the Tab Mix Plus extension installed? TMP has a setting for that (Events > Tab Opening).

  • Firefox 4.0 inconsistantley opens new tabs, options are set to always open in a new tab.

Hi, I am new to firefox. I have it set up in a way I like I just have one issue. In the options I have Firefox set to open in a new tab, but most of the time I have to press the crtl key then click a link and it will open in a new tab. Most of the time if I do not press the crtl key the link launches from the same window. Is this just a Firefox bug?

I assume you are talking about the preference - '''Open new windows in a tab instead'''.
When a webpage is programmed to open a hyperlink in a new window that pref will divert it to a new tab instead. It doesn't affect hyperlinks that are intended to open in the same window; there's no pref for that. If you want every hyperlink to open in a new tab, you need to {Ctrl + Click} or Middle-Click ''(click on the mouse scroll wheel)'' - or look for an extension that adds that preference to Firefox.

  • Is there a way to have search box items open in a new tab?

is there a way to have Safari open searches (from the search box next to the address bar) in a new tab, rather than overwriting the existing one?
I'm guessing the answer to this is "not until someone makes an extension...", but thought I'd ask...

If you're typing in the full search term(s) rather than using their suggestions/recent... you can hold the command key when hitting enter, and the results will open in a new tab. Hold command & shift to make the new tab active.
Command-option does the same thing, but in a new window - again with shift making it active.

  • Open links in new tab not new window.

Is there a setting allowing me to open a link to another website from safari to automatically open in a new tab without me having to command click the link. I want all links to open in a new tab not a new window.

Sorry, that's not possible. Links controlled by JavaScript will open in whatever fashion they were designed to, regardless of what the user chooses. The best you can do for targeted links is this to copy and paste this command into Terminal and press Return:
defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true
Thereafter, any link that has a specific target and is not controlled by JavaScript will open in a new tab. To check whether or not any link is targeted for a tab or window, enable the Show Status Bar from the View menu of Safari and hover over the link before you click on it.

  • How to open link in new tab using Spry?

Does anyone know how to open menu web links in a new tab
(instead of opening a new window - IE7) using the Spry horizontal

    Thanks!
Opening new windows in a new tab is a setting within the IE7
preferences ( and I'd assume 8 too ) and as far as I'm aware there
is no control over this setting from within the HTML/JavaScript of
the web page to do what you are asking. If you use _blank and the
user has the appropriate setting in their browser, then it will
open in a new tab, not in a new window.

  • Firefox open links in new tab even if its shuold not be opened in a new tab

when i open a link it will open in a new tab even i fix the settings still it opens i new tabs. how can i fix this?

The setting in Tools > Options > Tabs: "New pages should be opened in": "a new tab/window" is for links that specify a target window to open the link.<br />
That option allows to divert such links to a new tab instead of a new window.<br />
Links that do not specify a target should open in the current tab.<br />
If that isn't the case then you may have an extension interfering.

  • Open Links as New Tabs

Is there a way to make all links that would otherwise open in a new window open in a new tab instead? I like how in Firefox, it can automatically contain everything into one window. I know that I can click using the scroll bar on my mouse to open it in a new tab, but I often forget to do this. I can't find anything in preferences that would change the options this way. Please let me know if there is something I am overlooking. Thanks!

When you want a new link to open up in a new tab just hit the middle button (click down the scroll wheel) on your mouse instead of the left button.
I consider this a bug, because there is an option under Preferences to open new windows in a new tab; it doesn't seem to work.
That option is for links coming from other applications. For example if you click a link in mIRC or MSN, it will open in a new tab.

  • Firefox Will not open a link in a new tab after I right click and then click on open link in new tab

When I right click A bunch of new options pop up and firfox will not open links in new tabs. Safe mode did nothing.

What do you mean with ''A bunch of new options pop up"''?
Can you open a new tab by clicking the plus button on the Tab bar?
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

  • When I click on a web link and hold down ctrl the page will not open into a new tab, it is just opening in a new window. How do I correct this?

When I use to hold down the ctrl key and left click on a web link, the page use to open into a new tab. For some reason this is not working anymore. Instead when I hold down the ctrl key and left click on a web link, the link will open into a new window. How do I fix this?

I figured out how to correct it. Not sure what exactly was happening. But I started into private browsing and then turned it off. It's been working correctly ever since I did private browsing.

  • When I click on a bookmark, it will not open in a new tab, but I have this option checked?

I have two issues since upgrading to FF4. The first issue is, when I click on a bookmark it will not automatically open in a new tab. I do have this option checked in my preferences, but it will not work. The second issue is when I search in the Google box, I cannot click on the auto search option.

Bookmarks always open in the current tab unless you middle-click or use Ctrl + left-click to open the bookmarks in a new tab just like you do with other links.
There are extensions that can change that behavior.
