NTFS Partition on external HDD changed to read only after failed eject

Hi all
I have a Mybook studio split into 2 partitions, a NTFS one and a HFS+ one. After removing the USB cable too quickly following the eject my NTFS partition is read only [I checked using 'get info'].
I need to change this back and I'm stumped - please advise
Many kind regards in advance

Thank you all very much for the advice you have given me. I attempted to make changes with NTFS3G - i upgraded to Tuxera NTFS [which REALLY screwed up everything] - and got a monstorous error message. Disk utility was no good to me either telling me to reformat.
For anyone reading this thread in search of a solution - I used bootcamp to load up my Win7 Partition and then repaired the disk using the built in utility accessble from right click> properties.
It appears there was some corruption causing my problem (?) as it created a folder called found.000 which has a random assortment of files from all over the partition in it. Hopefully it found all the lost data but I have no way of comparing it's before and after state.
Moral of the story - NTFS isn't quite ready for Mac yet, at least in my experience.
Now if only we could get time machine to work with NTFS..
Cheers again to you all!

• External drive changed to read-only

I have a Western Digital external drive that I use for Time Capsule and Super Duper! This morning, when I wanted to start work, Time Capsule said that my drive "appears to be a read-only drive," and Super Duper had failed its overnight backup.
I used BatChMod, and changed the permissions.
When I opened a finder window for the external, it still showed the read-only icon in the lower left hand corner of the window.
The Get Info window shows System as the owner, Admin as the group, with all permissions. EVERYONE has read-only permission.
When I look at the disk in Disk Utility, Repair Disk Permissions is greyed out.
What would change the disk's status, and how can I fix this?
Thanks,
Nicky

Most likely, your backups were corrupted, beyond Disk Utility's ability to repair them. It's possible a 3rd party disk repair app, such as +Disk Warrior,+ could have fixed them, but it's too late now.
Does the drive have two partitions, one for Time Machine backups, and a second for SuperDuper? If so, erase the Time Machine partition and let TM start over.
If not, that's a problem (see #3 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum). Your best bet is to reformat the disk with two partitions. See #5 in the FAQ for detailed instructions. Then start both Time Machine and SuperDuper over fresh.
Longer-term, having both backups on the same physical drive is not good; if the drive fails, you risk losing both of them.

• After moving iTunes, external drive sometimes becomes read-only after reboot

I had some system corruption a few weeks ago, and had to restore my system. As part of that prolonged effort, I decided to move my iPhoto Library and iTunes Library to external FW800 drives.
I had terrible problems initially with these drives mounting read-only. I found a relatively quick work-around, and that seemed to fix the problem. But I still have them periodically mount read-only, and I can't D/L iTunes updates, etc.
Why do they keep doing this on a reboot? Very frustrating, as I need to reboot as part of the fix, and I'm always in the middle of something else, and can't reboot at that time.

Oh, as part of this, not sure when the change was made, OSX used to keep the mounted volume name in /Volumes, even if the volume was ejected. Would cause an occasional problem - but very rare. I notice now that ML seems to create/delete these mountpoints automagically - and that's part of the problem. They get incorrect permissions when the volume mounts, and I (user I'm logged in as), can't write to the volume without some background shenanigans.
My process is this:
Unmount problem volume
Drop to terminal, and "sudo mkdir /Volumes/<mounted_volume_name>"
Remount volume via Disk Utility (you now get a "<mounted_volume_name> 1" - with CORRECT permissions)
Unmount the volume again
Remove the created directory (i.e. undo step 2)
Remount the volume - 99.9% of the time that seems to fix it.
Reboot to be sure - and it stays for a while - then at some point becomes a problem again.
Not sure if it's something in ML that's an issue - or something in iTunes or iPhoto (but can't see how they would affect the permissions when the system reboots and you login)

• External Hard drive Permissions changed to "read only"

I use a Seagate Slim Drive (500GB) on my Macbook Pro (Late 2012, Retina, 13"), to store movies and tv shows and whatnot. Last night, I was watching a movie and everything was fine. I ejected the drive after use and it stayed that way overnight. This morning, I tried to connect it, but the partition refuses to mount. I got a friend to help me run command prompt diagnostics using terminal, which revealed that the permissions had suddenly changed to "read only". I really need to access the data on this drive because some of the movies in there are part of an important project that could hopefully land me job. Any help is welcome.

1. Select the external hard drives icon
2. Right-click > Get Info (cmd + i)
3. Expand the Sharing & Permission column
4. Click on the lock at the bottom right
* You will be prompted for an administrator name and password *
5. Once unlocked change the permission for user, group & everyone to read & write
6. Click the little gear right below and select “Apply to enclosed items…”

• My External Seagate Hard drive just changed to read only

my External Seagate Hard drive just changed to read only on its own?
I went to get info and scrolled down to the Sharing and Permissions
But there is nothing there but a greyed out : You can only read
There are No boxes to check or uncheck, No options to change to read and write, No name of owner or ignore ownership box. NOTHING ELSE IS THERE
HELP!
I have recently upgraded to Mountain Lion and am having other problems as well

Click on the external HDD icon COMMAND+I. You should see a display such as this:
You should be logged on as the administrator. Click on the lock icon. It should open and allow you to make the required changes.
Ciao.

• External hard drives suddenly changed to read only

Three of my external hard drives suddenly changed to read only. These hard drives have been working on my macbook pro for months. When I click on get info 'read only' shows up and there is no lock icon nor is there a window that shows name | permissions, also in disk utility the 'verify disk premissions', 'verify disk', 'repair disk', and 'repair disk premissions' buttons are ghosted and I can not select them. I have not made any changes to my computer and I have read many other posts and have not been able to find a solution.

About a hundred times with no luck. Some of my research is leading to Western Digital, there may be a problem with the drives' 'smartware' software. I've been using this drive for months and I never used the 'smartware', but I tried it anyway with no luck. I just remembered that four days ago I had this drive plugged this drive into an Iomega wireless storage device and it seemed to work fine. Now the wireless storage device can't find the drive at all. I just need to know if there is a way I can change the permissions back to read/write, otherwise I will have to buy another drive and transfer all the data to the new drive and re-formatt the wd drive.

• NTFS External Hard Drive now read only

Hello Everyone,
For months I have been connecting a NTFS 1 TB Phantom Labs external hard drive to my mac book, to access my music collection, as well as store additional large files. Today, however, I found my external hard drive to be "read only," rather than read and write. Interestingly, the folder where I keep my music, also includes the lock image as the external hard drive icon.
When I look in Disk Utility, the Phantom Drive is originally listed as read/write. However, the mounting point, named disk2s1 is listed as read only.
Does anyone have any idea how to resolve this situation and return to the read/write status I originally enjoyed?
Thanks.

I have got the exact same problem!!
have a 320 seagate ext HD formatted as NTFS that I have been using for the last 3-4 months that suddenly became read only.
I'm running macfuse with 3G to read and write to the drive and prior to this have never had an issue.
Have another ext HD formatted as NTFS that reads and writes fine. I have tried disk utility but verify and first aid are greyed out for the seagate drive, One minute I was writing to my drive fine and next time I plugged it in Read only (yes I ejected properly as always)
Any ideas?? I hope it's not a re format and start again..

• External hard disc is read only on my MacBook air and I can't safe and export files on it, how can I change that

My external hard drive is read only on my MacBook air and I cand safe or export files to it. How can I change this so I can use the external hard drive to export my files and work on an other pc.

Eject and disconnect the drive (and its power supply, if it has a separate one) for a few moments, then restart it. Restart your Mac, then reconnect the drive.
If that doesn't help, the directory structure may be damaged. See if you can Repair it, per #6 in Using Disk Utility.

• External Hard Drive Becomes Read Only

I have a LaCie Hard Drive that Time Machine has been backing up to for about 4 days now. All of a sudden, the external hard drive is read only. When I go into Get Info for the hard drive, I can't even change the read/write permissions - it's all grayed out. This is the second time it's happened. The first time was on a Western Digital MyBook. TM fried that drive. At least this drive hasn't disappeared like the last time.
I've now changed the Time Machine backup to my second hard drive on my Mac Pro (which is screaming along, as opposed to the FW800 [!!] backup on my La Cie, whose file transfers are slo-o-o-w).
The idea behind backing up onto the external was so that if I ever needed to leave during a fire or earthquake, I could bring this with me and not worry if my computer was destroyed. Insurance would replace the computer, and I could replace my system.
If it weren't formatted properly, it wouldn't have been backing up for the last few days.
Can anyone help?

Thank you to everyone who has posted about this issue -- it just happened to me AGAIN this morning (this is my 3rd time), after I installed the 10.5.2 update. The first two times were right after I hooked up my external Iomega 500GB drive to use with Time Machine and I thought it was something I was doing. Then it seemed to work fine for a couple months so I thought the problem was over. Guess not! It is frustrating because I just lost about 2 months worth of backups. So finally I searched Apple's discussion forums and saw that I am not alone. However, no one was really posting a solution other than to say "reformat the drive".
So I did a Google search about this topic and encountered the following article. I have just gone through the steps he outlines and although I won't know for awhile if it works, I figure at this point it can't hurt to try. I hope this proves useful to others as well. (One note -- in his article, he says to skip the Erase tab and go right to the Partition tab. If you don't see the Partition tab, first erase your corrupt Time Machine backup disk and then follow his steps.)

• Changing a Record to Read-Only after an event.

I have a Developer application that needs to be modified. This
application includes several fields as well as a comments
field. I'd like to change all updatable fields (not to included
the comments field) to READ-ONLY after a certain event. Then
after a certain date, I'd like to make the comments field READ-
ONLY.
Do you have any suggestions?

Dear Regina,
Have you tried to set_block_property in pre-record trigger to update allowed/not allowed depending on the event. And in post-record update not allowed. These triggers must be on block level. Also on item level to the item 'Comment' define pre-item trigger where take a new decision whether you want to open the entire block or not, the same way as on block level triggers. But in post-item trigger always make the entire block read-only again.

• Hard Drive Not Mounting After Being Magically Changed to Read Only

I was using a firewire connected, verbatim 1tb drive as a time machine. Everything had been working fine, but I walked away from my laptop for the morning and came back this afternoon to find my hard drive changed to read only. Time machine wouldn't back up to the hard drive; so, I rebooted.
Since then, I haven't been able to get the hard drive to mount. It won't show up in Drive Utility or on the desktop. I have rebooted the hard drive, unplugged it, turned it on and off.
What should I do? How do I fix this? It has my backups and my music. I'm no amused.

I've had exactly the same trouble this morning.
I'm using a MacBook Pro with my Time Machine on a portable Hard Drive. When doing my regular back up the computer froze. I force restarted the computer and the TM drive came up as 'Read Only'.
So, I rebooted again and the drive is not mounting at all. I can see it connected through System Profiler, however the drive isn't showing up in Disk Utility.
Does anyone have any ideas? Coz I don't seem to be the only one with this issue.

• How do you change a read only file?

I copied a document to my email address but it's in the read only format and I need to make some changes but I can't. What do I need to do?

If you save the document to your computer, using Windows Explorer you can right-click then select Properties to change the Read-only attribute.

• Some Files Change to Read Only

Hello,
I have Mini SL Server with 5 iMac clients. My problem is that some files
change to [Read Only]. This happens with Excel 2008. My current solution
is to save the file to any iMac Desktop and then move the file back to the
server. I cannot find why this is happening. I am using AFP and ACL to
propagate permissions.
Thanx in advance for any help in this matter.
Art.

Mine is doing the exact same thing!
Server running 10.6
3 clients running 10.4
2 clients running 10.5
1 client running 10.6
I have to periodically go in and reset all the permissions, and hit the "apply to all enclosed items" too.

• USB Stick unrecognized/read only after Gparted

Hi
I partitioned a brand new USB thumb drive with Gparted and then installed Fedora LiveOS on it. This was just a test as I really wanted to use Larch to get Arch on the stick. So I tried to repartitioned it again. But Gaparted now complains that the stick is read only and so does not change anything.
I then moved to fdisk. fdisk will allow me to look at the partitions and will even change them. But after using Fdisk to repartition and then running mkfs.whatever-i-want the partitions can not be mounted. Even dd exits with a read only drive error.
Fdisk can manipulate the partitions but it complains that DOS mode is not supported and asks me to give the c and u commands. Despite this the drive is not recognised when I plug it into the computer.
After using fdisk on the drive several times, gparted now claims that there is no valid partition table on the drive and so shows only unallocated space. But it still won't write any partition info to the device, claiming its read only!
I'm stumped! Anybody have a clue how to get around this?
emk

dd fails with an input/output error after writing 17MB. This is an 8GB stick. Fdisk shows no partitions. But is unable to write to the drive after I create partitions. Here is the output.

I don't have any ext4 partitions on it. THere should only be vfat. My initial partitions were ext3 and vfat. I then switched the ext3 to ext2 after the problems begun and finally just went with a big vfat. I initially used gparted on the drive so as to label the partitions. I really feel that gparted may be the culprit here but I have no proof. This is a brand new stick that had not been written to before.
And from gparted:

• Make a field required on record creation, read only after that

Hello,
Does anyone know of a way to make a pick-list field required on record creation, but read-only after that? The other twist to this is that we need to allow this field to also be read-write for all the integration edits, since this field's value could change in the enterprise database.
Thanks,
Neal G.

Hi !
I think you can add a validation rule for that. Something like :
IIf(PRE('<YOURFIELD>') IS NULL, <> '', = PRE('<YOURFIELD>'))
This means that if the previous value of your field is null (it's a creation), so the value must be different than blank. Else, it must be equal to the previous value, so not modified.
I didn't tested it, but I let you get back to me if it works... or not !
You'll just have to add a message saying that this field is required on creation and readonly after...
Hope this will help, feel free to ask more !
