Ntsc hi8 to fce1, shot in pal

Has anyone had problems with capturing Hi 8 (SP) video on Final Cut Express? I seem to be able to pull the video up in the capture window but its lke jerky but looks ok on a external switchable monitor, it's a Samsung HI 8 SCL 700 NTSC 8mm, in the menu there is PAL conversion off/or PAL 60.

This is difficult, and will not give you what you want.
In NTSC you have a frame rate of 29.97fps with a completely different vertical resolution - 480 lines against 576 lines.
For film, you also end up with either frame blending, or frame doubling using Premiere or After Effects.
Best option:
www.dvfilm.com - and get DV Film Atlantis. This will take your NTSC video and convert to PAL, but there will be an unavoidable 4% speed increase. To get around this, you will need to extract the audio from the NTSC, and then go into Premiere & import the converted PAL film, and the original Audio & stretch the film to fit the audio.
Alternative is to just live with the speed difference, or cope with the inevitable judder & frame blending.
Menus will need to be redone due to the difference in vertical resolution.
When multiple standards are needed, it's better to start in PAL & convert to NTSC with Atlantis - no speed differences then - and you will also need 2 sets of menus.

Do not use H.264. Use Pro Res or send the timeline straight from Final Cut to Compressor an a PAL preset (or one that you make yourself.) I prefer sending out self-contained versions in case I need to re-rencode or want to make items for various formats.

ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL PAL MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
    1. Disable overlays on the canvas
    2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline

DV footage requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or PAL monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

  • How to capture a dv shot on an NTSC camcorder,  now played thru a PAL cam?

I borrowed a dv tape shot by someone else on their camcorder and am trying to capture the content in iMovie 6 by playing it through my videocam. Specifically, the tape was shot on a new Sony dv camcorder in NTSC format, but now running thru my older Sony dv handycam that I purchased in Europe and which is a PAL machine.
When I attempt to capture in iMovie 6 just a few frames are captured and then everything stops. I've set the menu on my camera to output in NTSC format but no luck.
I know it's not an iMovie problem because tapes I've shot on my own PAL camcorder are captured perfectly.
    Any suggestions for a workaround?
    Many thanks,
    Roger

Sorry, ...... borrow a NTSC cam.
Your cam is a PAL. Although, it has a NTSC output feature, in its guts it still remains a PAL cam. So, if you stick a NTSC filmed tape in it, it will play in black & white. No color, because it cannot read NTSC color coding. There is no workaround this. Your cam can export to NTSC, but cannot read from NTSC as almost none of PAL cams can. Except of universals, those have PAL/NTSC in/out. Expensive and uncommon.
I had the same problem while I was in Europe.
Borrow a different cam. All I can tell you.

  • Exported from Premiere as NTSC, but Encore thinks it's PAL - Help!

    Encore 3.0.0.268
    Source video: AVI, 29.97 fps, 720x480, 32kHz 16-bit stereo
Exported from Premiere Pro to Encore with the following settings:
NTSC, 720x480, 29.97 drop frame [fps], Lower, Quality 4.5
    48 kHz, 16 bit, PCM
VBR, 1 Pass, Min 2.02, Target 4.78, Max 7.00 [Mbps]
But!... when I open the project in Encore, it only lists PAL options. For example, if I try adding a menu, it adds the PAL version instead of the NTSC version (which does exist in the Library folder). If I remove all the PAL menu files from the Library folder, then it doesn't list any menus at all for this project (except a couple HD ones) - ie, it's ignoring the NTSC menus.
Also, if I look at the Transcode Settings, the only choices are PAL.
NOTE: I already have NTSC set as the Default Television Standard in Encore General Preferences.
Why does Encore think the video is PAL? How can I make it think otherwise without redoing the whole export in Premiere?

  • Is this true?? NTSC dvd projects will play in PAL players

    From The "Unofficial" imovie FAQ

    States:
The good news is: You can just send an NTSC disc. Any PAL set top DVD player capable of playing DVD-R discs can also play NTSC discs. All that is needed is a fairly new TV, built in the last 8-10 years or so.
So is this true? I can send my project made in idvd to a country that uses PAL and my NTSC project will play?
    Thank you for your time.

  • Pal-ntsc conversion via 23,98fs slow-pal technique

    Hi to all,
I've been trying to convert a prores 1280x720 clip recorded at 25fs (for a pal output) into a ntsc compatible clip that will be used on an ntsc dvd and also for an ntsc h264 quicktime file.
I fell on an article explaining the "SLOW_PAL technique"(http://www.macworld.com/article/49306/2006/02/marchcreate.html) by converting the clip to 23,98fs in cinema tools before applying a 3:2 pulldown in FCP. The result is pretty stuning but my question is, once all this is done, i end up with a 23,98fs file.
Do i need to convert that into a 29,97 file to make sute it will work on an ntsc dvd plateform? If i do i lose all the smothness i just gained....
thanks in advance, and hope i'm clear....
    tee.

No you don't need to convert to 29.97
export qt self contained current settings
drop that export into compressor and set up you DVD compression and your h264 compression
author the DVD in DVD Studio pro
the player will supply the pulldown
h264 will play fine on any device that will play h264

  • Can I shoot with a NTSC camera and convert to a PAL dvd through Final Cut

i am shooting a wedding for someone in Scotland that will be getting married in the States, and she wants a PAL dvd. Can i shoot the video with my NTSC camera (HVX 200) and with Final Cut convert it to PAL? If not can it be done someway?

the prefered way is to standards convert the video and import it into a PAL sequence
    http://www.nattress.com/Products/standardsconversion/standardsconversion.htm
an alternative is to produce an NTSC DVD; it will playback on a computer; Mac or PC, it might play back on the users hardware DVD player/ TV combination but it might not, no guaranteed there.
    Best bet is option 1

  • Converting NTSC DVD to Blu-ray or PAL DVD

Why doesn't Encore allow me to change a DVD project to a Blu-ray project with the ability to choose the frame size and rate, or to change an NTSC DVD to a PAL DVD? It looks like the option is there, but they are grayed out.
I exported my Premier Pro CS3 project for NTSC DVD, PAL DVD and Blu-ray, hoping to simply change to Encore CS3 project type, and then replace the assets with the appropriate file/format exported from Premier.

    >Maybe worth a feature request for CS5?
    God in heaven - NO!
As Joe just pointed out, these are 2 completely different TV standards, running on different frame rates at different resolutions.
The results of attempting this "on the fly" with menus etc would very closely resemble a dogs dinner.
    >I would therefore guess that you are stuck with copying the menus and other such assets into a new Encore project for each output format.
    That won't work.
NTSC is 720x480, PAL is 720x576. They have different PAR as well.
If compliance is what you need, then design your menus in Square Pixels at 720 x 540, and resize the image (in PS) to the required TV standard before importing into Encore. 16/9 is worse, as you need to use different designs for each TV standard. There are no short-cuts.
    Asset preparation should be done

  • NTSC 29.97 with pulldown to PAL conversion

i receive NTSC 29.97 fps MOTION JPEG A files and need to work with them in PAL VIDEO 25 fps - TC in picture SYN with timeline TC. the files have TC in the picture.
i tried reverse telecine to 23.98 and then conform to 25
picture & sound are there - but with the picture put in my PAL timeline the TIMELINE TC and THE PIC TC get out of sync.
we had a post house do that stuff, but since we work with FCP anyway, i want to be able to do it inhouse. should be possible somehow, right?
    thanks for your help !

Wow...that's awesome! From what I see, I just open the video with CinemaTools, click on "conform" and tell it what I want, correct? So, I did that and it was super-fast...almost so fast you didn't think it was doing anything. I played the file back and it appears to have added pulldown, but the audio was sped up. Any ideas what to do now?
    Thanks for the CinemaTools suggestion!!!

  • Exporting an NTSC source video in quicktime for PAL audience - help!!!

I have recorded a promo video on an NTSC DV camera, I have captured and edited into FCP and its ready to export.
What settings in FCP do I use if I want to export a quicktime movie to iDVD and have it play no problem on PAL and NTSC DVD players?
The settings list is pretty daunting!!!!!
    Powermac G5 2.5GHz Dual / MBP 15" 2.16Ghz + 1GB Ram/ 500GB Lacie Ext HD   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

If you are going to build and burn the DVD disk using iDVD, your options are extremely limited.
Export your file using Quicktime (not quicktime conversion) using 'Current settings'. If you have space on your hard drive, select "make self contained".
To make the NTSC version, simply drop this your normal NTSC formated iDVD template and away you go.
    To make the PAL version:
    -create a new sequence
-place your self contained exported file in the timeline
-drop Nattress's standards converter on it
    -export as a PAL file.
Then, create a PAL iDVD project, drop your new PAL formated file on it and away you go.
    good luck.

  • Creating NTSC DVD in DVDStudio Pro from PAL material

I am UK based and normally work in PAL. I have used Final Cut Pro v5 and DVD Studio Pro v 4 quite a bit for making PAL DVDs and am pretty comfortable with the process.
But I now need to create an NTSC DVD and make copies to be played in the US. . The end product is a DVD, with a menu and twelve, chapters each only 1-2 mins long, to send to US clients so needs to look reasonable. I only have to run a few copies so will not be using a duplication/replication facility.
The source material is DVCAM PAL supplied to me as PAL MOVs.
How can I convert the material to NTSC and at what stage in the process do I do this?.
Will I need other software to convert and achieve a reasonable quality DVD?
Is there anyway I can test the final result to see if it is really NTSC?

    Hi,
I'm working on transcoding PAL to NTSC. I've been weighing the many pieces of software which seem to do some part of this including Hawkeye, Mpeg2 Works4, Nattress, and even Toast Titanium, but I think I've settled on doing it with Compressor 3, mostly because I already have it, and I read this Macworld article:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/49306/2006/02/marchcreate.html
My first question is regarding something Drew said:
"I find converting first to PAL/NTSC in the original Codec then encoding that to m2v seemed to give better results than converting straight from PAL/NTSC to the m2v stream."
I'm not sure what that means. Can you explain a little more about what are you converting and what are you using to convert it?
For my purposes, I'm starting out with a PAL video_ts folder (region free). I've cobbled together a best-guess workflow from sources all over the internet. Would you kindly check this and steer me away from any cliffs?
I can't import the folder directly into compressor, right? So my plan is to use MPeg Slipstream to
    1. Open DVD
    2. Export a Quicktime movie using the "Apple DV-PAL" settings
Now I have a .mov file which Compressor will recognize, and which I can convert to NTSC by following the directions in the article, right? I don't want the audio or movie length changed, so I think I want to use the traditional method instead of "Slow-PAL". The result will be an NTSC .mov file, right? Will this .mov file contain the dvd menus, subtitles, and alternate audio tracks? Do I need to use DVD Studio Pro to fix anything?
Thanks a lot for your advice.

  • Cant play ntsc quicktime file on my USUALLY pal mac

    Hi All,
Im in Florida and were trying to import a quicktime file into FCP for editing.
Were shooting on a JVC NTSC camera.
We dragged the file to my desktop but when I try to play it it just crashes and gives me the ol' "report bug to Apple'
I changed my capture settings etc in FCP but this shouldnt matter for simply playing the file should it ?
    Any ideas ?
    Cheers in advance !

Also, it really does help if you offer up what version of Final Cut Pro, QT and OSX you are running as well as what format the camera records. Don't forget to spell out how you are going about bringing it into FCP. Without all of that information, we are simply guessing.
    My guess -
A number of issues like yours can be caused by running software that is too old to understand the newer formats. If that's the case, you'll need to either upgrade the computer and software or convert the format to something your version of FCP will understand.

  • FCE 4: NTSC AND PAL?

Hi, this summer I bought FCE, but I really still have to learn using it. Now I saw that between the description of the FCE 4 upgrade, it says that you can use Pal and NTSC footage in the same timeline. This means that if I upgrade I can use in the same movie some shots from my NTSC camera and some of my Pal camera and then export the all movie in whatever format I may like? (NTSC or PAL)
I'm asking because, if this is true and the results are good, This can be a good thing to kick out of my pocket another 100 €...
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Sandbox Test
    1) being is a PAL orientated country, I download some NTSC footage from iStock Photos (iStock_000003835610DV.mov - NTSC, no sound, 720 x 480 px).
    2) opened FCE4, and created a new sequence as "PAL DV 48kHz"
    3) imported the NTSC footage
    4) dropped the NTSC footage into the timeline, and it prompted me to either match the clip or not. for this purpose i said no, and the NTSC footage was converted to match the sequence settings.
    5) the canvas view was at 72% whilst when i looked at the NTSC footage in the viewer it was 50% - PAL 720x576 whilst NTSC 720x480.
    6) playback in the timeline without rendering, and all looks good.
    7) exported as movie (not self-contained).
    8) playback in QT7.4 side-by-side the original footage and naturally the width's match, but the FCE4 converted material was stretched to fill the difference.
    9) changed the aspect/size to match that of the original footage and all looked normal.
I guess the morale here is mixing footage of different sizes will need some manipulation to make the final output look normal.
I am sure others more experienced with mixed media will correct my knowledge inaccuracies...
    I hope this helps
