OBIEE - table join across databases

Hi,
I want to join two tables that are in different databases. I want to join these tables on some condition and then be able to see data from both of them in the reports.
Table 1 - columns A1, B1, C1
Table 2 - columns A2, B2, D2
Currently what we tried is
1. create foreign key constraint between the two tables in the physical layer. Map A1 to A2, B1 to B2.
2. create a join of two tables in BMM layer and then port that to presentation layer and then make report using these columns.
OR
try the approach as described on link http://oraclebizint.wordpress.com/2008/03/19/oracle-bi-ee-101332-cross-database-joins/
in both the above mentioned ways, we are not able to see join of two tables. The link mentioned above doesn't work as we tried it multiple times already.
We are able to see individual data from each table, but when we try to see data from them together, we get error.
Can someone help us with this problem.
Please email me on [email protected] if you need more info as i cant paste the confidential data here on the forum.
Thanks in advance,
Amit

We made sure that the datatypes are the same in both tables.
I will explain a bit how we did it.
We have table T1 in database d1, table t2 in database d2. Since datatypes are different there, we actually had to create tables in physical layer and used select query to extract data from databases and get that into those tables in proper format. For example we had to do mapping to make the values of some parameters consistent (like BABY in T1 and CHILD in T2, so we used 'case when T1.parameter1='BABY' then 'CHILD' and so on for other columns).
After that we defined forgein key constraints between these tables, then ported them to BMM layer, then to presentation layer.
We are not getting error in terms on data types. Is there a step by step guide we can follow to get this cross database join.

Amit

  • Joining tables across databases in OBIEE Physical Layer

I was facing this problem of joining tables across databases in Physical layer of OBIEE admin tool.
I had a requirement to combine two tables from 2 different databases A and B respectively. I had created one database object (OBIEE Object) in the physical layer and I had created two connection pools under that pointing to the required databases. I was able to view the data (right click on the table object --> popup menu option "View Data" ) though I had to go through the "Select connection Pool" window and select the required connection pool. I was able to join the tables and was able to complete the star schema in BMM and bring them up to the presentation layer. Conistency check was also successful. Everything went fine so far.
But when I started building the report, I started getting error whenever I chose the table which was supposed to be queried by using the second connection pool. The error message was something like "table or view does not exist at OCI call OCIStmtExecute". I assume that this was happening because the systm was not able to understand which connection pool to choose (because there were two pools defined under one database object) and by default the server was choosing the first one. If anybody is having a different opinion or definite information about this, kindly update with your reply.
I could resolve this problem after creating a separate database object with a separate connection pool defined under it, which points to the second database. Imported the required table under this database object. (Infact it was reverse. When I re-imported the table, OBIEE Admin tool, by default created its own database object and the connection pool separately for the imported table).
Once this was done then I went ahead as usual by joining the tables across these two different database objects and modelling was already done (ofcourse with a little more tweaking since the mapping had to be redone between BMM and Physical layers). Now I could build the report in the reporting layer without encountering any error.
Appreciate and welcome any further additions/updations/corrections regarding this issue(?).

  • Outer joins across multiple databases

I'm trying to join three tables: 2 from data warehouse and 1 from Siebel database in OBIEE. I create the physical and logical joins (no errors or warnings). The model looks like this: Account Address (table 1) -> Account (table 2) -> Siebel Customer Data (table 3)
I create two queries in Answers:
    (1) Account.Number and Siebel.Address (the query works)
    (2) Account Address.Zip, Account.Number, and Siebel.Address (the query gets the following error):
State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. [nQSError: 42019] Join condition, D901.c3 <> 0, contains predicates that are currently not supported for outer joins across multiple databases. (HY000)
Can someone help me understand why the join between the two databases works for the first query but when I add a second table it fails?
    thanks...

Either you can link the Oracle DB into Access (by using File/Get External Data/Link Tables)
or you have to simulate the join in Java by doing two separate queries and looping through the results.

  • Select query based on joining of tables from different database is taking too long

    Hi Team,
Select query on table with millions of records is taking very long time. It took 50mins, the below query is joining on multiple table from two databases DB1.dbo.Table1 contains 100 million records and also Table3 and Table4 (of different database) might
    contain close to 1million records.
    Select T1.*
    From DB1.dbo.Table1 T1
    Join DB1.dbo.Table2 T2 on RTRIM(T1.Col3) = RTRIM(T2.Col3)
    Join Table4 CA on RTRIM(T1.Col1) + T2.Col2 = CA.Col1
    Join Table3 U on CA.Col2 = U.Col2 AND RTRIM(T2.Col2) = U.Col3
    Where U.Col4 NOT IN ('A1', 'A2', 'A3', 'A4', 'A5', 'A6','A7','A8','A9')
    And (T1.flg IS NULL OR T1.flg = 'N')
    And LTRIM(RTRIM(T2.Col2)) NOT IN ('B1','B2')
How can i improve the performance of this query. Actual thing is update the data in Db1.dbo.table1 based on the conditions but if the select is taking close to 1hr then update will take hours together. Indexes already implemented on all the tables.
    Thanks,
    Eshwar.

    Thanks.
    Join Table4 CA on RTRIM(T1.Col1) + T2.Col2 = CA.Col1
This join is not working with spaces if Rtrim is not used.

  • Can we join Multiple Databases tables in PRD File ?

    Hi ,
I am working on POC project and trying to Join Multiple Databases to create one rpd file . Lets say I have complete SH schema from Oracle and I want couple of tables (Time and Products) tables from Sybase .
I want bring sybase TIME and Product tables into Oracle SH Schema and create joins in physical layer. When I try to do it, it is throughing an error .. Am I missing some thing here ?
    Is it possible?
    Thanks
    Shivaji

You have not mentioned what is the error!!!
we can create join b/w the tables of different databases
You need to select the table from one database and aswell as other table in other database and
right click > physical join > selected tables only...
This is the way of creating physical joins... or else you select both the databases and select physical joins...
It's better that you mention what is the error you are getting..??
    Thanks & Regards

  • How to join tables on different databases

In the company I work in, we've got some java applications working on two different instances which "hide" to each others (one on 10g and the other on 8i). Some decoding tables, which should common to both of them, are only present on 8i one.
I've been told that java works 'cause it allows to connect to both of databases and then report the information on front end applications.
The question is this: since we'll have to get reports on both of databases, is it possible to perform queries by using tools like oracle forms, oracle reports, sql developers, ... for joining the tables of the two different databases as java does? We have to get how to accede directly to the two instances for getting data from both of them for reporting activities. I remind you that we cannot use dblinks between the two databases for internal security reasons.
    Thanks in advance!

Even java can't join between tables on two databases if the db links are not created.
So it essentially works that it fetches the data from one db and then from another db ( using two different db connctions) and then you can utlize these data and perform some joining.
Coming back to database world. It can be done like the usual dw approach.
    1. Connect to a third db:
    2. Get data from one database
    3. get data from other database.
now do all the joins that you want to do

  • Questions on OBIEE reporting against transactional Database

    Hello guys
I have a situation where I have to bring in 5 tables from transactional database to do reporting on.. I looked at the tables, there are not typically dimension or fact tables. Each table contains information very specifically, at the same time all tables have numeric values that needed to be aggregated at the lowest level of that table..
I can join all these 5 tables together knowing the key columns. However, this is basically joining 5 tables with fact measures... Since this is transactional database which we don't own, so I can't create views nor changing the table structures..
I wonder how would I be able to configure such model in OBIEE?
    Any thoughts?

    Thank you for the reply..
The specific situation I have here is:
I have 4 tables that I am polling directly from the4 store's cash register (Oh yea, real real time), they are customer, receipt line, receipt header, inventory,
The physical join is: they are customer-----> receipt line<-----receipt header <------------inventory...
In the BMM layer, each of these 4 tables have columns that should be measures, such as customer.customer credit limit, receipt line. quantity, receipt header. reciept tendered, inventory.quantity on hand... They are more measure columns from each table, but I am just listing one from each..
In this case if i set the aggregation rule on each column, then the BMM model won't a star schema anymore because every table can be fact..
I thought about adding all the measure columns into 1 logical fact table, which then the logical fact will have 4 LTS: customer, Re Line, Re Header, Inv.. This will be fine if I am only dealing with 1 store... However, in reality there will be 50 stores with the same exact tables/structures but on different servesr. Therefore, the logical fact will end up with 4*50 = 200 LTS each has fragmentation defined "store number = NYC or something else"..
Just wondering if combining all the measures in one logical table is the only way to model this design or not? What would be the best thing to do if in this situation I have to report against multiple data source of the same tables in 1 subject area?
Please let me know your thoughts..
    Thank you

  • Can do explict join for database view?

    Hi all,
I would like to ask whether there is a way to specify the join condition to be outer join for database view. It is because I need to map 2 tables in the view and I want to be able to find the record in the view table if the record exists in Table A but not Table B.

    Hi Jaya,
A Maintenance View helps you to maintain data that is distributed across different or multiple database tables. So, it becomes an easy way to update data and without any programing effort. You can create a Maintenance View across multiple tables with one Table as Primary Table and others as Secondary Tables. But the tables must be related with each other with a Foreign Key Relationship.
Have a look at the following link which tell you about the procedure of creating the Maintenance Views :
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/cf/21ed2d446011d189700000e8322d00/frameset.htm
    Hope this helps.

Another problem i am having which i am trying to solve and written up my ideas but haven't been getting the expected results.Hope you can help.Thank you.
    Information:
    =======
All children take exams at the age of 16 called a General Certificate of SecondaryEducation (GCSE).
They have to study and take exams in Mathematics, English and Science, and can take other subjects such as History, French, Art etc. Most students will study between 5 and 10 different subjects before taking their GCSEs.
For each exam, a student is awarded a grade from A*, A, B,C,D,E,F,G,U,X An A* grade is the best grade achievable and an X is the worst grade.
In order to analyze how students have performed, each grade is mapped to a numeric value as follows:
    Grade Numerical score
    A* 8
    A 7
    B 6
    C 5
    D 4
    E 3
    F 2
    G 1
    U 0
    X 0
Now why i need this avgGCSE is because i have to create a view containing avgGCSE of the students it is used in the next question where a condition is avgGCSE is between 6.5 and 7
In order to calculate the avgGCSE the idea is to calculate the grades of the students and map the grades to their corresponding scores/values
add them all up and div by the total no of grades to get the avg.

I have a opinion that xgcse in STUDENT table refers to the avgGCSE which i want to calculate as when i asked my professor as to what xgcse he said that he forgot to take it out of the table and it is not necessary while creating avggcse.

1386 STEPHANIE AANNESSON 15-JAN-79 f none 6.88873 2 2 so if xgcse is the avgGCSE then upn 1011 has avggcse<6.5 and 1386 has avggcse >6.5
my idea was backward strategy like so now if we find out upn 1368 has suppose xgcse(avggcse)>6.5 how to extract the avggcse for the particular upn We need to map grades from GRADEVALUES to grade in STUDENTINGROUP and map upn from studentingroup to upn in student to output the values for the corresponding grades from GRADEVALUES
    select grade

    32/8=4 total(values to corresponding grades)/no of grades.
But the xgcse for upn 1011 is 3.935 and i am getting 4!! maybe xgcse isn't avggrade but ? is the procedure by me correct for calculating avggcse

  • Limitation on the number of tables in a Database Schema!

    Hi All,
Is there a limitation on the number of tables present in a schema that can be fetched in Designer while creating a universe.
Customer is using Oracle schema which contains 22000 tables and while trying to insert tables in Designer XIR2 (or trying to get the table browser) Designer hangs.
In BO 6.5 there are no issues while retrieving the tables from the schema in Designer.
Is there a way to retrieve only a certain amount of tables in Designer XIR2?

There is no limitation on the number of components (objects, classes, tables, joins, hierarchies, lov's, etc) in a universe. But of course as the number of components increases, you could run into problems  related to performance.
This depends on available RAM and the processing speed.
    Query 2:
There is NO such option to select the number of table to be automatically inserted in to the universe because Suppose if you have 22000 tables in DB and you want only 1000 table ,you entered 1000 tables as the value to insert tables in Universe then How Designer will come to know which tables you want to take in Schema to build the Universe?
It all depends on the DBA and Universe Designer which tables are important for organizations reporting needs.
When you  create connection to the DB then Connection will fetch all table from the database and we canu2019t limit  DB data retrieval.
    I hope this Helps...
    Thanks...

  • Is there a way to create "temporary" tables in SAP database?

    Hello,
Is there a way to create temporary tables in ABAP?
    Here is our scenario:
    1. Invoke a custom RFC that creates a temporary table and returns the name of the table.
    2. Invoke another custom RFC and pass this table name as parameter. This RFC internally does some INNER JOIN with the temporary table.
    3. Invoke the third RFC to delete the temporary table.
Note that the name of the table cannot be static. We have many users using our application simultaneously and connecting to the SAP server.
I would appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Peter

I just ran into a similar issue.  While only calling the select statement 2 times, each time had so many entries in the 'for all entries' list, that the compiler converted this into about 700 calls to the select.  Now since the select joined three real tables on the database, the trace shows this one select as being the slowest item in this application.
I think that happened because 'for all entries' gets converted to an 'IN' clause, and then the total number of characters in any SQL statement has an upper limit.   So the compiler must make the select statement over and over until it covers all entries in the 'for all entries' list.  Is that correct?
Since every database I ever saw has the concept of db temporary tables, I have used db temp tables many times for this sort of thing.
The ABAP compiler could determine that more than one IN statement will be need, then use an alternate: write all the FOR ALL ENTRIES to a db temp table, then join on the db temp table, then drop db temp table.  Since the compiler does this sort of thing, no application code needs change to get the speed boost.

  • How to delete duplicate records in all tables of the database

I would like to be able to delete all duplicate records in all the tables of the database. Many of the tables have LONG columns.
    Thanks.

    Hello
To delete duplicates from an individual table you can use a construct like:
    DELETE FROM
        table_a del_tab
    WHERE
        del_tab.ROWID <> (SELECT
                                MAX(dups_tab.ROWID)
                          FROM
                                table_a dups_tab
                          WHERE
                                dups_tab.col1 = del_tab.col1
                          AND
                                dups_tab.col2 = del_tab.col2
)You can then apply this to any table you want. The only differences will be the columns that you join on in the sub query. If you want to look for duplicated data in the long columns themselves, I'm pretty sure you're going to need to do some PL/SQL coding or maybe convert them to blobs or something.

I want to develop the report with standard infoset query instead of going for abap development.is there any logical database to map the report or what tables can i use for table joins??

    Manoj,
The following is the tested solution.
    Table join
    Output
This figure shows the case of a Equipment BOM where 3 components are there. Installed Quantity are 4, 1, 1 respectively. Last two columns are showing the Storage Locations and the Stocks available.
    Fields taken to output are
From STPO : IDNRK MENGE MEINS
    From MARD  LGORT LABST
As said before, more than this you can not do in SQVI. With this basic join in SQ02, using codes in Extras you can do much more.
