Odd power/battery startup problem on MacBook Pro

I have a MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2012 running OSX 10.9.5 with all updates.  Approximately one year ago the battery died and I'd been operating off the adapter ever since.  This past Thursday I finally had a Mac hardware guy from the local university install a new battery; something he does regularly for the university's MacBook Pros.  Weirdly, the old battery had no bulges or other visible problems.  He did an SMC reset, started up, and everything worked fine.  I later hooked up a brand new Acer external monitor mirroring it to the laptop, and charged the battery to 100% with the Adapter.  That night I disconnected the adapter and all peripherals without shutting down to have the battery drain somewhat overnight.  Friday morning the laptop started up with a partially depleted battery.  So, I hooked up the adapter and peripherals.  All was well. I shut down Friday night and restarted yesterday, Saturday morning, but there was a little glitch with the mirroring settings.  I solved that problem by deleting the Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist file and restarting.  However, in trying several scenarios to make sure the display mirroring settings were sticking, I suddenly noticed the laptop would now not start up on battery power despite the battery being charged.  It would only start up with the adapter attached even when all peripherals were disconnected.
Today I have tried NVRAM and SMC numerous times with and without the adapter attached.  When the adapter is not attached the resets appear to be working (chime, grey screen, Apple logo) but then the laptop display dims for a second, then goes black.  The power light on the computer goes off.  So it appears the computer suddenly shuts down without completely starting up.  When I then attach the adapter, the computer starts up (and shuts down and starts up the exact number of times I tried either NVRAM or SMC or simply push the Power Button), finally starting up completely.
The standard Hardware Test (with no peripherals but the adapter attached) and the extended Hardware Test show no problems.

  • Leopard Startup Problem on MacBook Pro 15" 2.5 GHz

When secure deleting trash it took over 30 minutes to delete a 1 GB file so tried to stop. As this failed I pressed ctrl /cmd and power button to force a restart. On restart the computer starts but fails to get to login screen. Tried running ‘Disk Utility’ - on verify or repairing disk permission it reads:
“Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit and a window with
    First Aid failed
“Disk utility stopped verifying permissions on “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered”
‘The underlying task reported failure on exit’
Verify and repair disk is OK it is just the permissions that have errors.
On connecting to another Mac running 10.2.8 in firewire mode the other Mac indicates that the MacBook Pro disk is unreadable and do you want to initialise.
Have also tried resetting PRAM and this does not rectify the problem.
Pressing option at start up sees the drive but after selecting it I have the same problem as before.
Tried installing from MacBook Pro Leopard install disks that came with the computer. On starting to do this it warns that a newer version exists on the volume (as I have the most recent version via software downloads) and that I need to click on options
I selected the default ‘Archive and Install’ and ‘Preserve user and network settings’ but it fails to install reading ‘ Install failed MacOSX could not be installed on your computer’. The installer could not install some files in”/Volumes/macintosh HD” contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
I would do a clean install but I would lose about 50 or so files that I have not backed up.
I am hoping that there is a workaround rather than having to purchase DiskWarrior.
As the computer is only 3 months old will Apple sort the problem out – can I take it into one of their stores to get this done?
thanks in advance for any help you may be able to offer
    Cheers
    Dougie

    Your options:
    1. Use DiskWarrior to rebuild the directory or,
    2. Erase & Install.

I have a problem with my motherboard and my battery of my 2010 macbook pro 13". It was just serviced with a new screen, keyboard, and logic board. How much will a new battery and motherboard cost and would it be worth it or should I just get a new computer. It was about 300 dollars to get it serviced last week. if it adds up to much past 600 dollars I will just get a new one. THANKS FOR ANY HELP!
P.S During classes today it began beeping in my bag. Like three kind of long steady beeps then a short pause, and when I opened it I couldn't see anything but it was on so I turned it off and back on.

Depends on what options your Apple store offers - if they can do a depot repair (where they send it out), that's around $300 for all parts & labor.
If the store doesn't have that option, a logicboard is around $600, battery $80-$100, from what I've seen.
If they JUST replaced the logicboard, you absolutely should NOT have to pay for another replacement - the replacement is covered by a warranty. If they want you to pay for it, make sure you have a copy of the receipt for the work that was recently completed so you can show it to them. They have no reason to charge you for another logicboard.

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.

  • What is the problem on MacBook Pro retina 15"?

I just bought a new MacBook Pro retina 15". After unboxing, I turned it on and there was no any problem. But the second time I turned it on and charge battery, I got 2 problems, 1. The machine made noise loudly and 2. The charging is not working. What is the problem on MacBook Pro retina 15"? However, after about 1 hour, it works normally. Should I still use it or sell it before it has more issues?

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

since upgrading to OS lion, my mac book pro (2010 August) keeps freezing (non responsive, requires restart) when i turn on my mac and the system is trying to open apple mail. while apple mail is attempting to collect new mail, the macbook pro freezes. this happens every 2nd time i try to start up my computer. this only started happening after i upgraded to OS lion. please let me know what I need to do to fix this. being forced to restart every 2nd time i turn on my macbook pro has been very frustrating. not sure if apple mail is also the cause of my macbook pro for being very slow during start-up (on the occasion the computer doesn't freeze).

I am having similar 'freezing' problems with many programs (Mail, Safari, iTunes, etc.). I have done a clean install of Lion instead of an upgrade when it came out. Perhaps something went wrong with my install? I'm thinking about wiping and reinstalling.

Not that I am aware of.  An Internet search on your part will be required.  If you should find something to that effect, note it will not be endorsed by Apple and the magnetic connector will probably be in violation of Apple patents.

  • Stop battery charging with plugged MacBook Pro

    Hi,
is it possible to stop battery charging on a MacBook (Pro) with the power plug connected? I have looked into the PM api docs but cannot find anything to do that.
The idea is to make a menu app to toggle between "Preserve Battery Life" and "Full Power" modes. According to http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm, Li-Ion batteries loose less capacity over time when charge level is about 40% of max. capacity, escpecially with the comparatively higher temperatures that are given in a running notebook.
So the "Preserve Battery Life" mode would charge to say 50%, then let the MB run on battery to about 30%, then charge again etc. Before taking it on the road, one would switch to "Full Power" mode to charge the battery to 100%.
    Thanks,
    Bastian

    Best Regards,

The MacBook Pro charging circuit will charge the battery until it reaches 100% charge and then switch to power mode for the MBP.  When the battery drops to 93-95% charge the circuit will switch back to charging mode to top off the battery charge again.  You will not harm the battery or MBP by leaving it plugged in most of the time.
There are many good headphone/microphone combinations on the market, best really is more a function of how much money you want to spend.  Check those offered in the Apple on-line store for features/price to see what would best fit your needs.  You can also look at audio equipment suppliers, all the earphones need is a standard 3.5 mm plug.
