Oddball fix

hi
i tried the bulletsandbones oddball fix for a problem and had no difficulty with repairing permissions, but was unable to locate the garageband preference files to delete them. the FAQ gives directions for S X 5 and older, and i have 10.6.2. is that a problem? all i can find in the final search window is the garageband app icon, various song files and the apple loops folder.
should i be looking elsewhere?

I'm not 100% sure but I think the two preference folders you need to delete are in the same location in 10.6. It's just that the newer OS doesn't search completely. This will show you where to find them.

Won't let me edit effects - can ONLY use presets :(

Recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, all was fine until a couple days ago.
When I go to the "edit" panel to put effects on a track (both audio and MIDI tracks), I can select the effect I want, and I can also pick from any of the presets. However when I click on the picture BESIDE the effect - the one that is supposed to open up a box so I can edit the effect - nothing happens. It does not matter if the effect is turned on or not. Also does not matter if it is a new Garageband file or one that I created and added EDITED effects to months ago - nothing happens.
Any help would be greatly appreciated (my brother has several songs that need recorded for school projects and I was hoping I'd be able to help him out). Thanks in advance!

Automator Won't Create New Documents

Hi there--
When I launch Automator a dialog box comes up asking me to open or create a new document. When I select New, nothing happens. This is true when I select New from the File menu. Additionally, it won't open sample workflows either. I've deleted the Prefs file in my user Library, but that didn't help
Any thoughts?

I too am having the same problem. Read on for details.
I upgraded from a working Garageband v3.x (plus the usual load of other stuff via Software Update) and after installing iLife 08, to Garageband 4.1.2 (248.7). Running on a Macbook 1.83MHz with 2GB RAM and OS X 10.4.11 (fully up-to-date).
I can confirm that no amount of 'preferences' deletion and renewal or permissions fixing ('oddball fixes' according to external website referred to by poflynn) makes any difference. No amount of fiddling with Garageband makes any difference either.
When creating a new project the window opens with a std basic track but when I choose to add either a new software or real instrument the new track is not displayed - oddly though the effects pane opens/updates on the right for each 'new' track created. I have been completely unable to get any of the 'new' tracks to display in the track pane of the main window however so cannot build any composition.
Importing a pre-existing Garageband 3.x composition works and all the tracks are displayed correctly but the 'new' track behaviour is the same as above.
I have not yet tried re-installing or downgrading yet and would prefer not to and Apple also state on the Garageband 4.1.2 page that 10.4.11, 10.5 and Garageband 4 are system requirements so it 'should' all work together. I have not yet investigated the CrashReporter and other logs yet either to look for sources of the problem but one possibility may be a screen redraw/update issue with Garageband.
If any users reading this are using 10.5 their input would be useful if they can indicate they are not having any problems as I wonder of it may be an issue with 10.4 and the latest Garageband seeing as 10.5 is a major rewrite of the OS and it wouldn't surprise me if Apple's plans are already concentrating on 10.5 and of course 10.6 which is being mentioned, ie. support for Garageband 4.x in 10.5 is fine but flaky for earlier OS versions.

Why is it auto-adjusting the record volume when I don't want it to?

I start playing and I want the levels to almost clip. It adjusts to a lower record volume. Why? I have the compression and noise gate off.

That's odd. You're using the internal mic and you have the Automatic Level unchecked? If you turn the slider up high enough it should clip like crazy. I don't know why it would back the level down.

Garageband Rainbow of Death

When I launch Garageband, it tries to load my iPhoto photos (which are on an external drive), but when the drive is not connected, then I see the rainbow of death and Garageband keeps informing me that the Volume could not be found.
Anyway to tell Garageband to not load my iPhoto files?

try not opening GB the traditional way. Go to the folder where you keep your .band files and click one that doesn't have photo files. Its a long shot but it might work

since i updated to 4.1.1 i can't get any sound, through my instrument, or even when i import an mp3. my volume and input settings appear to be fine. help please!!

Cannot split track, right side of track disappears to a pill form

Hi there,
When I drag and drop a file in for editing I have no issues. When I split the track to edit the second half of the track after the split is just a little bubble. It will still play, but I can't see wave forms, I can't edit, and I can't do any more splits. I cannot drag it out with the arrow on the cursor, and adjusting the bar on the left side of the screen to expand the view doesn't work either.

Are you saying after you do the split that the second half of the region is reduced in size?

Garageband downlods but everytime i open it it start the download process again

Do you mean "bought from AppStore"? After uninstalling you should have been able to download from the AppStore for free?
Anyway. GarageBand seems to have a problem to remember, that it has installed the additional contents. Perhaps it cannot write the Preferences file. HangTime's "oddball" fix may help:
After GarageBand has completed downloading and installing all of it's extras, remove the GarageBand preferences file and relaunch GarageBand.
Go to the Finder's menu bar:
Select Go -> and hold down the ⌥-key, until you see "Library" and double click it.
Open the folder : ~/Library/Preferences
Locate the com.apple.garageband.plist file
Move it to your desktop.
Relaunch GarageBand.
If still loops are missing, rebuild the loop index: Rebuilding the Loop Index in GarageBand

Bought ilife 05, invalid instrument library

Hello,
I just bought a copy of iLife '05 and used the install dvd to install it. The main reason I bought iLife 05 was for Garageband. However, when I open Garageband, it tells me the instrument library is invalid. So I click "choose", and select the folder "instrument library" in the Garageband folder, but it just keeps telling me the same thing. Can anyone help? Thank you,

Your instrument library is HD/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library. If the folder is there, it might be a permissions problem - try the general "oddball" fix:

FMLE has oddball conflict with WebcamMax - Anyone else with this?

System: Phenom II 2.8Ghz Quad Core CPU, 16GB Ram, Radeon HD 6970Gpu w/2GB ram 600GB HDD space free.
I have found this oddball issue with FMLE and WebcamMax that causes a major amount of latency. And, only with WebcamMax.
I have tried ManyCam it runs fine, VHScrCAP it works well, and running straight from any of my camera drivers works just fine. I can run Manycam with Webcam Max as a video capture option and the latency drops, but not to what it is using Manycam or the others alone.
I use DPC Latency Checker a free tool to keep track in microseconds the amount of latency you may have. To be fair to all I have uninstalled each webcam type software and did reinstalls of each one at a time. And, even restored my system to a time before the use of them, along with a registry cleaning as to insure I get as fresh an install as possible. Slow and annoying to do this in this fashion, YES. But, worth checking in order to find the where the issue is.
WebcamMax runs fine when run on my desktop alone, as soon as I select it in FMLE... The under 500 Microseconds averages about 120micro seconds to 350micro seconds... had first jumpred to over 16,000 micro seconds (over 24,000), and after much adjusting and tweaking of settings in FMLE get it to sometimes hold about about 3,000 to 4,000 micro seconds. Leaving my viewers in for a choppy ride as the stream freezes, and lags for them.
Also, the latency issue happens BEFORE I even connect, and or start the FMLE stream. So it seems to be something between the Codecs used for FMLE and WebcamMax. I have read many places that this is rather common, and that the issue must be with WebcamMax.
I have taken the time to read the entire forum for WebcamMax, and like any good vender of software, or hardware it's always the other venders fault or issue.
Rather than assign blame, can we find a solid resolution for this? I imagine that many of the people with this odd latency issue are not ALL WebcamMax users, as I think this issue if it accurs in other programs (Non I can find after trying ALL I can with FMLE so far) could crash systems, the FMLE could lock up, and other frustrating issues.
The tool I used to check Latency is: DPC Latency Checker, and this tiny tool allows you to watch in real time your systems current and under load latency so you can better diagnose and fix issues, even if they do not appear in the Device Managers listing as having an issue.
Drivers to Mobo uptodate, Video Card drivers uptodate, Sound Drivers uptodate, webcam drivers uptodate.
Win 7 64Bit is the OS.

I found a small program NOT freeware sadly. The thing is it works well with FMLE in all ways that I can tell so far.
CONS: Cost - $79.00 USD - However, you can in fact without any tricks buy this software for less. If you test it and really like it with in the FIRST day, you can save 50%. If you wait until the next day it drops to 40% same for day three. Day four it is less still, until it reaches no savings.

The GUI - Is not pretty. Think Windows 95 or before possibly.
Kind of klunky feel to the program.
Not the most new user friendly program overall. But, it is one you can learn.
That is so far all I can think of as cons.
PROS:
Small footprint on system. Does not come with THOUSANDS of un-needed effects, masks, images, animations. Actually it has non of that. YAY! I just need the program for the ability to make about 7 or so Picture in Pictures using my cameras, and desktop sometimes all at one time. And, to do this with as little latency as possible.
Can adjust every aspect that effects LATENCY on the fly, in real time even while in a live broadcast. Once you understand some of the basics, the program is amazingly powerful. Today I got told in my show, by someone who has TV broadcasting experience that I now produce a cleaner, smoother show than even he can.
I was streaming four live webcams: Camera 1: Ten Mega Pixels Up to 1080P HD, Camera 2: SD Analog JVC camcorder, Camera 3 SD Webcam, Camera 4: SD Webcam. Plus: Showing another picture in picture for streaming from YouTube, and another to show my Minecraft Game play. Global Screen Resolution 720P HD, each camera ran at these settings: Cam1 at 720HD, Cam2 680x420 SD and same for all other sources.
Total Bitrate: Tested as low as 192 KBPS and viewers reported great image, and smooth streaming. Ramped up to over 14,000 KBPS where the stream took way to look to start for most. Ramped back down to about 592 KBPS where the image and quality was perfect.
Latency: Since I control how each layer of this was encoded from the CODEC type when it applied, to the resolution of each layer I could dial in the amount of latency I was happy with.
Set things to the max, and latency ramped right up to about 8,000 plus microseconds. Tuned things down to middle or non ultra settings returned the latency to ranges between: 120 Microseconds, to just over 500 Microseconds as layers loaded, and unloaded and only for mere seconds did this last. None of my viewers reported any freezing, and or lag issues for the first time since I have been broadcasting in HD or HQ as it is called on the site I use.
I was told by someone that my rig would not handle all of this and this was asking a lot of it... I thought, now that is funny, because we ask even more when playing some games, and never once think twice about how overworked our machines our to play some of these games.
I made sure that my machine could handle this and more if needed, and today proved my point that it can and will provide more than enough capability to run my online TV station. My total CPU usage with over 20 programs running averaged about 54% for mere moments as things loaded into memory, and closed out. The GPU's chip never went over 55 degrees... At this level the onboard GPU fan is just noticable as actully running, otherwise you never hear it. The machine sits about 3 feet from me in the open.
OK, so this is NOT an answer to the WebcamMax issue and the FMLE causing major latency even with the most basic of settings... It did at least for me prove that it is POSSIBLE to run my show in the fashion I have in mind without all of the un-needed latency.
Oh, I am asking here, as it seems anyone whom brings up any issue with WCM, is seen as wasting the time of whom I think created that cool program...
If either party Adobe, or WCM fixes this issue, it might solve what is crashing other people also.
I wanted to just provide at least one other alternative that I know works with FMLE.

"Analyze and Fix" issue

Hi all,
I'm trying to salvage some footage that was shot in poor lighting conditions.
It was shot continuously (one take) to a card on an HD JVC camera, which breaks the footage into approximately 14 minutes chunks. The lighting was constant throughout.
When I imported the chunks into FCP X, and used "Analyze and Fix", 4 out of the 5 clips were adjusted "exactly" the same. The 5th clip (which was the first of the clips sequentially) was adjusted slightly differently. See attached sample. Clip 1 is the oddball clip, while Clip 2 is how the other four came out.
Unfortunately that fifth clip gave me the best results.
My question: Why would FCP X give me different "fix" results on that one particular clip, and fix the other four uniformly?

That really is very poorly lit! Your subject moves around and thus his skin tone will chage slightly enough to throw the auto-balance off.

Missing TOC books & topics in RH Server output -- is there a fix??

I've seen a post a few months old now reporting the problem of nested books and topics not showing up in WebHelp Pro RH9 Server output even though they display fine in the local output before and after publication.
Has there been a fix for this?
I have a large project, over 400 topics, and it seems to affect books that are nested at level 4 and below. I have a level 3 book with several level 4 books inside it. The published output shows only the first level 4 book, and its contents, but then it omits the remaining level 4 books in that group and jumps to the next level 3 book.
This is not a merged project.
When I run the TOC report, all content is shown correctly in the report.

Hi. Sorry you're having glitches. While I research my notes from similar situations, I offer these things worth looking at:

I don't remember offhand but I think there may indeed be a limit of three "nested books" in a TOC, although I just experimented with this and I found it worked down to 6 or 7 nests.
3. I know in the past I have noticed that sometimes the culprit has been an oddball "illegal" character or space in a subfolder or filename. One client found that an exclamation point in a filename was a problem.
4. To be clear, remember that WebHelp (not Pro) has some very important differences from RoboHelp Server (Pro) output. Also, understand that when you view WebHelp Pro locally (i.e. View Results) you are not getting a fully accurate picture. Often, you must view the project from the RoboHelp Server to truly see the results.
5. With regard to Search. I have found in some cases that ticking the "Automatically Merge Projects of the Same Type" helps even though you only have one project!
6. I have found that a project that has been "renamed" can cause the server's configuration to be choke on the new name as it looks for the old one.
Let me know if any of this helps. If it does not, I'd suggest you zip up your Tomcat Log files and send them to me. I'll ask the Adobe folks if they could take a look.

Is the 1.0 downgrade a definite fix?

I'm thinking about downgrading to 1.0 from 1.1.
Cause i'm getting the "silent" movie effect after a movie is playing.
Is the downgrade a definite fix for the problem? Has anyone still gotten the problem after the downgrade? do i need anything in1.1 that is not in 1.0 besides the radio remote drivers?

For what it's worth, this cannot be a solely "1.1" issue. My new 5G came with 1.1 already on it and has worked flawlessly with every video I've thrown at it - ripped DVDs, music videos from iTMS and stuff I've transcoded usign iSquint (some of which started out as .mov, .wmv, .rm, .avi or .vob files).
It's either a glitch picked up due to playing some oddball files, a hardware issues with a subset of iPods or something else, maybe related to the 1.0 to 1.1 upgrade process. It is NOT universal with all 1.1 users.
