OfficeJet 8500 Printer attached to Windows XP system via USB prints partial pages

I have an OfficeJet 8500 printer stationed at the desk of one of my users and is attached to her Windows XP system with a USB cable.  The printer has started to print partial pages and will not complete a full page of text or images, color or black and white.
I have attempted to reset the printer by removing power from the printer via the power cord, and holding # and 6 while turning the printer on (after reconnecting the power cord, of course).  The alignment process took place after this procedure, but it has not resolved the issue.
I have not yet upgraded the firmware from what was installed at the factory.
What might I do?  What am I missing?  Do I need to upgrade the installed driver on the system?  Is the printer able to be salvaged?  It doesn't appear to be hardware, as the portions which print are perfect; I just don't get the entire page.
Thanks in advance,
Rob

The USB to parrallel cable will work just find if you don't mind plugging in the laptop to the printer when required. If you want to modify Win XP to be able to print to an AppleTalk printer follow the instructions below.
"To install AppleTalk protocol to Windows XP
Required files: (Get them from any system running Windows 2000 Professional or Server)
netatlk.inf, sfmatalk.sys, sfmmon.dll, sfmatmsg.dll, sfmwshat.dll, sfmpsprt.dll
If they can not be found you need to unhide hidden and system files.
Copy the files to their respective places:
C:WINDOWS(WINNT)\INF\netatlk.inf
C:WINDOWS(WINNT)\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\sfmatalk.sys
C:WINDOWS(WINNT)\SYSTEM32\sfmatmsg.dll
C:WINDOWS(WINNT)\SYSTEM32\sfmmon.dll
C:WINDOWS(WINNT)\SYSTEM32\sfmwshat.dll
C:WINDOWS(WINNT)\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\PRTPROCS\W32X86\sfmpsprt.dll
AppleTalk Protocol should now be available under the list of Protocols you can add in Network Connections - Local Area Connections Properties
This is only good using AppleTalk printers attached to the network. The AppleTalk printer will show up, if it's turned on, under Add Printer-Local printer attached to this computer - create a new port - AppleTalk Printing devices.
For more info see: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/s agadd_appletalkport.mspx (you do not need to capture the port for the printer to work)
If you can not get access to these files, make your email address visable in your user profile and I will send them to you."

  • IMac can't see printer connected to Windows 7 PC via USB

    Hi all,
I have a mixed PC/Mac (Snow Leopard & Leopard) network and a Canon PIXMA MP780 printer connected to a PC running Windows 7. Last week, when this printer had XP on it, I could print. Since "upgrading" to Windows 7, the Macs can no longer see the PCs on the network. Clearly this is a Windows issue but I opened a support ticket with Microsoft and was told it is a Mac issue. (SOP for Microsoft) I'm hoping one of you has figured out how to get your Windows 7 PCs and Macs talking to each other. I can't manually add the printer to the Macs (can't even see the PCs) so we are dragging a USB around the office until we get it working. Fun all around.
    Thanks, Denise

My best recommendation for the last 4 or 5 years has to been to only buy network (ethernet) printers. There are many available for under $100. Why put yourself and your office through constant changes caused by upgrading or changing computers? If the printer manufacturer makes drivers for your printer for the OS you want to use, then you're done.
This way, all of your OS's work with the printer in their own way, without having to make considerations for bugs or new services, or changes in the way the OS works on a particular computer. Also, if a computer dies, it doesn't take down your shared printer with it. The other computers don't have to even be turned on for you to print.

  • Can't Print to printer attached to Windows XP Computer

Be kind, since I'm new to Mac computing. I have a Canon Pixma iP5000 printer connected to a Windows XP computer via USB. I am wirelessly connected to everything via a Linksys wireless G router. I set up the printer using the printer setup utility. When I try to print, the printer led flashes once, but nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

To use any of the built-in network printing protocols on OS X, you must either have a postscript printer (postscript printers don't require a driver, just a PPD), or a driver that works with the CUPS system (a CUPS driver). So far, Brother is the only non-postscript printer manufacturer that provides CUPS drivers. For every other non-postscript printer, you need a third-party CUPS driver. Apple tried to get around this issue by including Gimp-Print drivers (open source CUPS drivers), but your model isn't in the bundled version of Gimp-Print.
For the iP5000, the only CUPS driver I know of is from www.printfab.net

  • I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. Any tips on how to do this?

I am trying to connect a Windows 7 / 64 bit to an Epson printer on my Mac.  The printer is hooked into the Mac via USB; the Mac is networked to a Linksys wireless router with an ethernet cable, as is the Windows box. I installed the current Bonjour printer services software on the Windows machine, and separately installed the driver software for the Epson printer on the WIndows machine.  Running the bonjour wizard, I get an alert saying 'I don't have sufficient access to my computer to connect to the selected printer'.
The printer has 'sharing' turned on from the Mac end; this works with a Powerbook via the wireless connection.  Sharing is also turned on in the Windows printer control panel for this printer (under properties).  The Mac is a G5 running 10.5.8.  When I try to print a page from the Windows machine it gets hung in the print queue.
Any advice how to proceed would be appreciated!

  • Can't connect to printer via usb print server

So I've tried to connect to an EPSON stylus printer from my iMac via a print server with no success.
Here's some info to help focus the questions/help:
iMac running Mavericks, Epson SP R200 printer, Belkin Play router, Toshiba Satellite laptop, Level1 USB print server
Win8.1 laptop prints via print server just fineso IP, port, firewall issues on router/print server side are ruled out.
I have the fire wall off on the iMac
I've quadruple checked IP and subnet numbers of iMac to rest of network, and they all jive.
I can pull up the config page of the print server via Safari on the iMacso connectivity is there
I previously had the printer attached directly to the iMac, and successfully printed.
I've tried to add the printer via IP > LPD method AND Advanced > Windows printer via spoolss
I can get as far as adding the printer, but as soon as I attempt to print a test page the printer has a "filter" error, or some "color" error, the job just goes into nothingness, or the job just sits there and the que is paused.
This is very frustrating to put it nicely.

What driver are you using? - Don't know if you remember, but you had to be using Gutenprint, because Epson's driver for USB-only printers, only works via USB.

Can I print from my iPad 3 using a USB printer attached to my time capsule via the network. Thanks!

You might want to take a look at an app called Printopia to see if it will do what you want. There is a free trial, so you will know if it will work before you buy.

  • Is there a difference between AirPrint and printing via usb printer plugged into an airport extreme?

My printer does not show up in the add a printer option on my iMac when plugged into the extreme. I have a HP officejet 5610 All-in-One. I want to be able to print wirelessly using my Airport Extreme.  Thank you

Is there a difference between AirPrint and printing via usb printer plugged into an AirPort Exreme?
    Big difference.
AirPrint for one will not work via USB, so you will not be able to print from an iOS device like an iPhone or iPad using this type of connection unless you look at additional software....that may or may not allow this option.
Assuming that you get the All-in-One setup using the USB port on the AirPort.......only printing is supported.
You will not be able to use any other advanced features like maintenance, scan, copy, fax, etc when the device is connected to the USB port on an AirPort.
If you plan to use the HP for other things, I would strongly recommend that you connect it to your computer.
My printer does not show up in the add a printer option on my iMac when plugged into the extreme.
This usually indicates that your printer model is not supported. Check with HP Support to see if they have any updated Macintosh drivers for the 5610 that you could download and install that might allow this.

  • Tried to connect ipod to sound system via USB and asked to format. Pls Help

I have tried to connect my ipod to the dvd system via USB port. It asked me to format the ipod and i pressed yes and than instantly plugged the ipod out [realized what i did]. anyway the meessage on the scereen was that I had to connect it to the pc and itunes to resolve the problem. When i connected Itunes asked me to restore it. I know that if i restore than i will lose all my music. Is there is any other way to fix it?
Thank you very much I really appreciate your help.

Restoration is relatively simplistic. Here's whatcha do. Plug your ipad in, open itunes, now if itunes doesn't recognize it then you may have a problem, anywho, click on the ipad in the devices interface and go to the info tab, click restore, and it'll be just like it was when it left the factory. To get you data back, it should ask if you would like to use a backup, just select the backup you want and you'll be good to go. That is if you regularly backed up your iPad.

  • My new Officejet Pro 8500a on a Windows XP machine will not print from the Internet.

I just purchased and installed an Officejet Pro 8500a all-in-one and everything seems to work fine except that the maachine will not print from the internet.  I use Windows XP home and and the Firefox browser.  The printer is connected directly to the computer, and is not directly connected to the Internet or any other network.

The Officejet 8500 printers take individual ink cartridges (IIC); that machine requires that all cartridges be installed to ensure that the printhead does not get damaged. Ink is used in the printer not just for printing, but maintain the printer and the printhead. One can reduce the amount of color ink the printer uses by changing the printer settings to Grayscale or use black ink only. Page 34 of the user manual shows how one can change those settings when printing documents. For further information on how ink is used in the printer; one can look as this page here where it goes into detail on the different ways that ink is used in the printer.
I would just replace the color cartridge that the printer indicates needs replacing when the machine alerts you to low ink. I would not replace all colors at once when only one is in need of replacing.
    I hope that this helps.

  • Print from a mac to a printer attached to windows

After installing Leopard I lost the ability to print to a printer attached (wired) to a PC in my home office. My MacPro is wireless and has no trouble finding the network I have set up to enable printer sharing. When I was running Tiger there was no problem getting this to work. I remember going into Printer Browser and selecting the workgroup MSHOME or something else. Everything seems fine in System Preferences. Under Printer & Faxes my Epson printer is showing and I have downloaded the latest Epson Drivers. All printing goes into the queue and never hits the actual printer. Please help.

I found a series of articles under Apple Mac OS X: Cannot locate a shared Windows printer. The first article said a remote printer must have 12 or less characters. That opened the door to the solution. The rest of the material was also useful. I can now print remotely.
Who would have thought that Apple would have been limited to 12 characters for a printer. Thta's the stuff you expect form Microsoft.

  • Printing trough a printer attached to Windows

    Hy,
I'd like to print trough a HP printer attached to a Windows Home SP2. When I go to system preferences he can see the network and the printer where it is attached to, but if I click on the network it asks me to "connect as" Guest or User, I've tried guest an User with the Username from the Pc (no password) and then tried with a password (changed it on the PC). To connect to SMB shares, I don't need a password or Username, what must I enter in the box "Username" and "Password" do I need to set up anything to the network?
My network (SMB) name is: casaclavel
    My Macbook name : TheM4inframe
    Thanks in Advance,

I have the same problem. I have a windows desktop computer running XP which has an HP PSC 1315 connected to it via USB and I am trying to use my MacBook to the printer via the home network. After trying several things, my MacBook won't let me install it. Any ideas?

  • Printing problem on laser printer attached to Windows XP

    Hi,
I am trying to print a test page on Samsung ML-2510 laser printer connected and shared on Win XP. I have a green dot for this printer in Print & Fax on Mac, all looks cool. But I get the message 'On Hold (Authentication required) with red circle in printer status window on Mac. When I hit 'resume printing of selected jobs' it asks me to enter username and password for XP. I do, I hear the printer starting to print something but no page is printed. I have no problems using this printer from other XP machines.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks

THIS WORKS, THANKS FOR YOUR HELP
I just purchased a vista home premiun computer and was having the same issue making my hp 5150 printer work through a networked xp system that the printer is physically attached to..It now works.. procedure= ( on the vista computer ) remove all old printers and printer drivers from previous attempts.
Go to this address and download this driver http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?os=2093&softwareitem=dj-46093-3&lc=en&cc=us...  HP_Vista_SF_Ph1.exe ,,click on it and let it install. when it ask if installing a local or network printer  (choose network ) continue install. It may tell u the drivers may not install properly, ( install anyway ) It may again tell you the drivers did not install correctly ( do not fix just keep them installed incorrectly ) now leave the print test page window open.
Go to add printer wizard and install new printer ( network printer ) add a local port and type EXACTLY the same path to the xp based printer EXAMPLE= \\lisajunk\printer .....finish wizard and print test page...
I done nothing to the xp computer, my printer and drivers work good on my other networked computers which use xp operating system.
I believe creating the correct port and having the correct path on the vista machine is the key to making this work. I use xp pro SP1 on an old antique 400mhz gateway that my printer is physically attached to.. You need to make sure the printer is being shared on the machine it is physically attached too.

  • Printing attached to windows workstation - can't print from mac

    Here is my setup:
I am trying to print to a Canon MF6500 printer attached via USB to a Windows XP Pro computer in a Windows 2003 SBS environment. I enabled Unix printing, set the printer up for sharing and installed the Mac driver on my computer. I went to "add printer," then "windows printing" and found the workstation with the target printer, however nothing was available to select.
I then added the printer to the server hoping that I could just share it from the server, but I got the same result - no printers to add.
So as a last ditch effort, I installed the 3rd party App DAVE. I opened the "Dave Printers List" and it actually found the printer, but I could not find the driver now. The Canon driver is in the list of drivers (as I can see it when searching for Bonjour/appletalk printers), but not there when searching for other printers. So I can add the printer, but I can only use a generic print driver.
Anyway, here is my question: How do I add the printer without using DAVE (if possible) with it's correct driver? If not possible, how do I add the printer using the correct driver with DAVE? Any ideas would be GREATLY appreciated!!
    Thanks

have you resolved your problem? Please forward me any tips that you may have received.
I have a new iMac with OS X V 10.4.10 - all software is up to date.
I have a HP OJ 7680 linked into my airport network through Bonjur. When I try to print, Word (and all other applications) tell me to select a printer, I select the HP OJ 7680 (designated as a Bonjur printer) and my iMac instantly tries to install the printer. After about 5 - 10 minutes the install fails.
Where can I get help on this? Doesn't apple offer any on-line or phone customer service?
