OK to change Volume name in Finder?

(First: Please correct me if I'm referring wrongly to "Volume." From the image I do know the DEVICE is "Chuck Mtn Lion MBP." I intend to refer to the name that appears in the Finder, the one that typically starts as "Macintosh HD.")
Simple question: Is renaming the volume as simple and safe as it appears evidently in the image? Just like renaming a document?
Context, if necessary:
My new MBP 13" was stolen. Fortunately, I'd already made a fully bootable 1TB backup, so I just installed it into my old ('08) MBP 15". It works perfectly. BUT its name shows up as "OWC 1TB MBP13"—the sort of name I give to my external bootables. I'd much rather have the Volume named something like MACPRO.
I haven't yet reestablished my backup regimen in Carbon Copy; I do understand that changing this name would undo all those tasks, so I want to get this name right BEFORE creating them anew. Does this bring up anything else I need to consider?
Thanks.

Hmmm—I spoke too soon. Task not completed. Unexpected error -8076. Not finding anything specific on that one.

  • Effect on symbolic link when changing volume name

I just wanted to verify this information before I proceed with changing the name of my hard drive. I have 3 partitions of my MBP's internal drive. There is the system partition "Mac HD", a boot camp partition and a data only partition called "Storage". I have quite a few symbolic links on "Mac HD" which point to "Storage", where the data is stored. If I change the name of "Mac HD" and/or "Storage", will the symbolic links update to the new name of the volume automatically? Or, will the change of volume name break the symbolic links so I have to create them all over again? Everything I have read leads me to believe they will update, but I don't want to mess anything up and find out the hard way. A little confirmation would make me feel much better before I make the change.
    Thanks,

I don't want to get off on a tangent about pros and cons of cloning, I just want to plant a seed of worry to review it at a later date. It is one thing to restore a disk image for a kiosk machine, it is something else entirely to restore an image of some machine that has had people using it. Misconfiguration, corrupt filesystems, and failed hard drives are some of the most frequent causes of failures. Having a clone of a system that has just failed for one of those reasons doesn't give me a warm fuzzy. It would be a much better idea to have a procedure (or script) to build a new server from scratch and load it from a backup (not a bitwise clone) of known, good data.
Our computer use is typical. There are only a few employees who use the computers regularly, and a few people others who use it less often. the daily use is mostly for back end management like bookkeeping and processing orders. The rest of the operations are design based, like graphics and documents. We don't have a business like a kiosk where people are all over the computers all day. With deep freeze on the system though, there is no worry about anyone doing anything to the system that would corrupt it. Also, the actual drives with the OS rarely get changed or backed up, because they remain the same for the most part. All of the files that are created like documents, designs, orders and such, are saved to storage. The storage is what I back up frequently, because that's where everything is stored. I may have a false sense of security, but I always thought I was more protected than most, because all of my files are stored on a drive without any operating system. I figured there is very little that can go wrong which could corrupt my data since the drive is data only. I always have 2 backups up both the OS drive and the data storage drive. One is like a daily backup, the other is more like once a week or so update which is kept in the safe. I always verify that the backup by opening a few files on it, but I never really know for sure that everything is safe because I can't open everything! I have no clue how to start a server based system backup like you are talking about, but it sounds like a much safer backup method. A little overkill for use considering we don't do that much on the computers? Maybe, but only because I would have to hire someone to come set it up for me. Maybe it's not so hard as it sounds, but I know I don't have the time to learn how to do something like that myself. I didn't realize the backup techniques I am using are so inferior. I feel like my data is pretty safe, but I guess I can look into other options.
I don't consider it "fun", I consider it a "requirement".
I am a bit of a prepper, okay a lot of a prepper. I am prepared for just about anything that can come my way. I do not consider testing my preps fun either. I was just saying, I anticipate that there will be some sort of loss when I restore, based on what you're telling me.
Disasters do have a remarkable ability to strike when you are least prepared. There is a logical reason for that. The more prepared you are, the less disastrous the event.
Agreed, 100%. That's why we're talking about it. I was starting to think that I was over thinking it! Clearly I'm not the only one!
Interesting. Unfortunately, the symbolic link method is pretty invasive because it requires those links to be up and functioning before the clone. A better solution would be to identify all those files, and have a launchd script that replaces the original files with either modified versions or links at system boot time.
With deep freeze, the symlinks are re-created every time I boot, even if they are broken before shutdown. So, it's pretty safe as long as they work before I freeze the system. I also have the two backups in case something goes wrong. I'm confident the links work. And the worst thing that can go wrong if they break is that I have to re-create the broken ones. either way, the data that is linked is still on my storage drive and both of my backups. The only thing I wouldn't be able to recover would be the symbolic link itself.
You need to think of this in terms of the file system. The "name" of a volume doesn't really mean anything. What matters is the mount point. The mount point, however, depends on a particular hardware configuration. You could control it better with some clever mounting scripts, but it sure seems like there is a much easier way to accomplish your ultimate goal.
I guess you're saying I could get by without deep freeze, and that it complicated things. Yes, it does. I am always trying to find workarounds because of it. However, I like the fact that my computer is the same every time I turn it on no matter what someone has done to it.
You have extensive control over your mount points.
I will have to look into this, because if I can get the firewire clone to run with the symlinks in place, I could have a fully working system with nothing more than a restart of the computer.
That, I don't know. Restoring a disk image that has embedded symbolic links to another drive is a fragile solution. You know what files you need to symlink, write a script that will set up the links at boot time - or at any time. Exactly what files are these? I strongly think there is an even easier solution lurking around. Why are you so concerned about retaining user data through restarts? Why are you even restarting?
There's actually not as many as I thought. I have symlinked data and prefs from mail, ical, address book, blackberry desktop. Then, some document folders. I could cut a lot of these down by linking my entire documents folder and building my hierarchy within that, but I've built my own which is neatly organized into the 4 departments of our business. It's really not that much. The only thing is that my mail, ical and address book won't work on the clone, because they are dependent on the simlinks. Everything else is just files that I would access directly from the storage drive anyway, so no loss there!
Wow! I made it through here! I'll review over the ideas you recommended and see if I can actually implement any of them myself. My guess is, I don't have the skills to pull them off. I'll look into it though. thanks for your time, and I will let you know what happens.

  • Final Cut Pro X - Project:  I changed the name in FINDER and lost files, I need to correct?

Lost Files but only in name.  I changed name in Finder.  How do I correct?

Use the relink function to point the application to the new files.

  • Can not change file names in finder

Several times over the past week I have not been able to change existing file names in Finder. The mouse moves normally and can highlight the name, but the keyboard instructions, including "delete" or typing, does not result in any response. All other programs continue to function normally.
Restarting the computer solved the issue for a while, but it happened again.
Reading over the previous posts, none of them apply (I do not have those programs).
Any idea why this happens and how do I fix it?

This same thing happens occasionally (or maybe rarely is a better word) for different users here at my work.
I haven't had the problem myself, and thought it was gone now when everyone is running Mac OS 10.4.7 (we ran 10.4.5 just recently) but a user just got the problem 5 minutes ago. All apps except Finder respond to keystrokes.
Relaunching the Finder using "Force Quit..." from the Apple solves it, but I guess sooner or later the problem will come back.
Would be great to know what's causing it.

  • Change volume name

    I need some help;
I want to change the volume name but don´t know how to?

If you want to change the name of a volume, such as that for a hard drive or a partitio to one, you do it exactly the same way as changing thee name of a file. Click the volume's icon once to select it, then press the Return key; this will put the volume's filename into edit mode. Type in the ne name, then press return again.
Note 1 - if you're referring to a CD or similar volume, one which is locked or otherwise can not be written to, you can not change its name.
Note 2 - if you're using File Sharing on a network, changing the name of a volume will interfere with access between machines.

  • CHANGED FOLDER NAME IN FINDER- NOW IPHOTO CANT FIND FILE

I was trying to organize my iphoto files through the finder. So I renamed and grouped similar files. Now the photos cannot be found in iphoto.
How do I reset the folder settings?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
The point of iPhoto is that you do all your work in the iPhoto Window. It does the work in the background.
Then if you need the files to upload somewhere or for some other reason:
    *For Users of 10.5 Only*
You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
    *For users of 10.4 and 10.5* ...
Many internet sites such as Flickr and SmugMug have plug-ins for accessing the iPhoto Library. If the site you want to use doesn’t then some, one or any of these will also work:
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. However, if you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
*If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running*:
Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Can't change file names in finder

I can highlight a file or folder name in the finder but when I try to type nothing happens. Also I can't type anything in the search section in the upper right corner of finder windows.
All else seems to be working fine.
This happened after I installed Photoshop Elements 4.0

    No problems since

  • Can you please help me change the name of my device in iPhoto?

I am trying to find out a way to change my new sony dsc-h70 camera from "no name" to it's proper name in iphoto. I've googled it, but cannot find any information other than you can change the name in Finder. I cannot figure out how to do this and have been working on it for half an hour in Finder with no luck. Everything works the way it is supposed to, photo's import, etc., I'd just really like to change the name. Can someone please send me step by step instructions? Thanks

Take the memory card out of the camer and put it in a card reader.  When it mounts on the desktop select it and try to change the name.  However, that might make it incompatible with the camera.  You'll just have to try and see.

  • Change the name in Automater, so it sticks in iTunes?

    Hello everyone
I have this.. Well, minor problem. I have renamed an audiobook with Automater on my Mac in Finder, but when i import it into iTunes, it changes back to the original filename, "Track 01" and so on. I have manually changed the names in Finder, but it didn't stick in iTunes either.
How do i avoid changing all the files names in iTunes manually?

    Hi,
Try this code this will convert the names first letter into capital and the remaining into small checking the space what you have asked for.. let the name be how big with the spaces.
even if the name is any kind of format that is if it is all capitals or all small or some capital some small.
Ex: raJa venKi rEddy or RAJA VENKI REDDY or raja venki reddy
it converts into Raja Venki Reddy.
    DATA:  w_name TYPE char20,

           w_i TYPE i.
    SELECT-OPTIONS: s_name FOR w_name LOWER CASE,
                   w_final FOR w_name LOWER CASE NO-DISPLAY.
    LOOP AT s_name.
      DO.
        SPLIT s_name-low AT space INTO w_name w_name1.
IF w_name1 IS INITIAL AND w_name IS INITIAL.
          EXIT.
        ENDIF.
        IF w_name NE ' '.

          TRANSLATE w_name+0(1) TO UPPER CASE.

          IF sy-index EQ 1.
            CONCATENATE w_name ' ' INTO w_final-low.
          ELSE.
            CONCATENATE w_final-low w_name INTO w_final-low SEPARATED BY
    space.
          ENDIF.
        ENDIF.
        MOVE w_name1 TO s_name-low.
      ENDDO.

  • IPhoto can't find original photos after volume name change

I had to reformat my drive and do a fresh install of Mountain Lion. I was pleased that the Migration Assistant imported all the user accounts, apps, etc. from a Time Machine backup. Never could have done *that* with Windows...
However, in iPhoto, I *do not* copy pictures from my Pictures folder into the iPhoto library and iPhoto can't find them. I expect that this is because I changed the volume name when I reformatted the drive, which is embedded somewhere in the iPhoto package in my Pictures folder.
Does anyone know which iPhoto files I can edit or batch edit to change references from the old volume name to the new one? Is this information stored in text or XML files that I can edit or is it embedded in binary files? I thought I might be able to reimport the photos from the current volume and iPhoto would sort out the duplicates (not a great option if I get prompted for each one though...) but I wasn't sure if that would preserver events, faces, etc.
When I try to rebuild the iPhoto library, I get a dialog indicating each file cannot be found on the volume. While it provides an option to browse for the location, this isn't practical due to the 1000's of photos and movies on the drive.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

As OT says, the primary reason not to run a Referenced Library, and, most especially, not one where you have the Library on one Volume and the photos on another.
You're going to have this problem again and again any time you make a change to your hardware set up - including upgrading your machine and so on.
Going forward: Do you have Aperture? This has a command to Locate Referenced Masters which should help. Other than that, how are you at hacking SQL databases? That's what this guy did:

  • Device Names in Finder for TrueCrypt Volumes

When using TrurCrypt, all mounted volumes show up in Finder (under Devices) as NONAME even though different mount points are specified in TrueCrypt while mounting them. Is there a way to see the mount point names in the Devices list?

Figured out a way to fix it - maybe it's a trivial thing. Right click on the NONAME, click Get Info and change the name in resultant dialog. This name is remembered even if I dismount the volume in TrueCrypt and then remount it.

  • Changing Name in Finder & I lost  all of my photographs...sort of.

    Sequence of events
1.In my Finder my home folder is called Matthew (my real name)
    2. This morning I renamed it to Matthew & Vanessa (my partners name)
    3. This afternoon I opend Safari and noticed all of my bookmarks had gone and my homepage had reverted to apple.com - "This is odd" I thought. My history is ok.
    4. I looked in my iphoto - EMPTY!! 1000+ photographs gone! "This cannot be happening".
    5. The contents of my Documents folders and the folders/files in there seemed to be ok. I looked at the last letter I remember writing and that was stil there.
    6. All Microsoft Office icons have dissappered from the Dock
    7. When I opend Entourage, it behaved as if it was the first time I was opening it. All information from there had gone.
    8. Upon investigation I found both a "Matthew" folder and a Matthew & Vanessa" Folder in Macintosh HD/Users. They use different icons; Matthew is a house Matthew & Vanessa is a folder.
    9. Their contents seem to be the same with one exception. In Macintosh HD/Users/Matthew & Vanessa/Pictures/iphoto library there is an /originals folder that seems to have all of my photos in. This folder does not exist taking the same path through Matthew/Pictures/iphoto library etc.
    Questions
How can I revert back to the happy position I was in this morning with my photos in iphoto?
    1. Can I reverse the change in name I made and restructure the contents to what it was
    OR
    2. Do I have to re-import and start again fro the stated path/folder above?
    3. Is it possible to change the name of the home folder? I would never have thought such a simple act would have such a catastrophic outcome. It feels like I have opened a new folder altogether; which has prioirity over everything else.

  • HT2497 Airport is not recognizing my wireless network because my wireless network has the same name as another apartment in my builing.  I cannot change the name because my room mate controls it, is there any way I can make it find my wireless network?

It used to be that the other apartment with the same name didn't have theirs password protected so even though only one or the other would show up, I could always get onto one.  Now, they have password protected theirs and it seems to be that 100% of the time only theirs shows up which I only can tell because it says "invalid password" when I try to connect to the Internet.
I have asked my room mate to just change the name of the network but she is really slow to do anything about it and I need to be able to get the internet at home and the internet is in her and set up through her computer so I really don't have any way of being the one to just go in and fix it myself.
Is there any other way to make Airport recognize that there are two different networks with the same way so it will find mine?  I feel like I have tried everything including mannually typing in the name of my network and typing my password and it still just says "invalid password."  I have also double checked that I was typing in the correct password and I am.  My room mate is not having any problems accessing the Internet so I know the problem is not with our connection (she also has a Mac, almost the same model as me, I have a MacBook Pro purchased in 2011).  I am also able to connect to the Internet on my Mac at coffee shops and the library so I know that the problem is not my computer or my wireless connection so I'm pretty sure it is just that Airport is somehow only recognizing one of the two "WLAN" networks
    Any help???!

Hi - you can do what you want to do with AirPlay from your iPhone - but unfortunately it is not as easy as the people in the Apple store told you - your first problem is that you have a non Apple router - you cannot extend a non Apple router wirelessly with the Express - you can only join the network and connect an ethernet device to it - you can however connect via ethernet and have it create a wireless network of its' own - you can set this up from your iPhone or the XP - but this is a complicated setup and would involve many different discussion areas of this forum - therefore I would suggest that you use your 90 days of support and consult directly with Apple to do this - go to this link - http://www.apple.com/support/contact/

  • My iphone was stolen, however its still saved as one of my devices on icloud but its name has changed. Can apple find it?

I left my iphone sitting on the dashboard of a taxi and forgot to lift it. As soon as I got out of the taxi, I remembered so I rang the taxi company to get it for me. I also rang the phone and it was turned off, which is strange as two minutes earlier it was on and it had a 80% battery life so I knew something was strange. Suprise suprise the taxi company never found it. I went on to icloud and put the phone (the device was called jacks iphone) in lost mode and tried to track it but it was offline so I could never find it.
Now several weeks down the line I went back on to icloud and this mysterious device TonkhawiPhone7_ was in my list of devices. Its an iphone 4 as well. So could this be my iphone and the person who now has it has changed the name of the device? It doesn't appear to allow me to put it in lost mode for some reason.
Can apple help me get my iphone back?
    Thanks for reading

could this be my iphone and the person who now has it has changed the name of the device?
    Possibly

Can someone help me with following problem.
Using Finder I am not able to change any folder or document name.
Thus creating a "new folder" I even can not change that name!

Move com.apple.finder.plist file from /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, OPTION-click and hold the Finder's Dock icon, and select Relaunch. Note that this requires resetting Finder preferences. See if this fixes the issue.
