Old 144G Apple TV - External Hard Drive

My old Apple TV has a 144G hard drive and I want to know if I can use the USB connection in the back to connect to my iMac for an external hard drive? Would hate to waste the memory simply because I upgraded to the new Apple TV.

unfortunately, the ATV is not an external hard drive device. If your in need, take it apart and strip out the hard drive and put it some other use -- trashing the ATV. But bigger hard drives are cheap!

I just bought a mac mini over the weekend. I saved items from my old G4 to an external hard drive. I go to plug in the external hard drive and the new computer is not recognizing it. Help.
Here is the information I have. The external hard drive is a 120GB Acomdata. It has both USB and Firewire. When I go to plug in to the mac mini through USB, it is not being recognized. When I switch to Firewire on the old computer I can see it, however when I go to USB it is not being recognized (even on the old computer).
I'm at a loss as to what to do. Any advice would be helpful.

Have you ever tried the FW 400 to 800 adapter?
I have used them on multiple occasions and they work just fine.
Try this (maybe you already have):
    -Boot Mini with drive disconnected.
-Do not connect drive but turn it on
-wait a few seconds for drive to spin up
-plug cable into the Mini then into drive.
This is an old drive and may have some timing
    issues.
I had an Acomdata drive a long time ago.  It
worked fine with FW but USB was flakey.

  • Can I use old time machine as external hard drive

I just bought the new 2 TB time machine, and I have an old 2 TB time machine.  Can I use the old TM as an external hard drive?  If so,  do I just use a usb cable to connect it to my computer?  Thanks for help.

You cannot use it by USB..
You can use it via the network.. bridge the old TC and plug it by ethernet into the new one.
You can then access it and use it via network the same as the new TC.

  • MacBook Pro crashed while deleting old backups off partitioned external hard drive. Now only recognizes windows formatted half of drive. Can the Apple side be saved?

    MacBook Pro 15-inch, Mid 2010
Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.9.5 (13F34)
I have an external hard drive:
    2 TB Seagate Backup+Desk Media
    Partitioned:
    1TB - Windows NTFS
1TB - Mac (sorry I can't remember the formatting, whatever Mavricks asked me to use...)
    What happened:
I was erasing 3 old backups from the Apple partition and my laptop crashed part way through emptying the trash. (it has done this many times before, where parts of the screen are frozen in square blocks displaced all over the screen. Screenshot not possible unless I use a separate camera).
When I force restarted my computer (holding down the power button) neither side of the drive was accessible. After running the Disk Utility and Verifying and Repairing the Disk Permissions and the Disk Itself (for the Windows side) I was able to access the Windows partition. However, upon attempting to do so with the Mac partition it tells me that it cannot be repaired. I have found many forums discussing SIMILAR situations but none with the same and here is why:
Up until this happening I could access ONLY the Windows partition when the drive was connected to either my Apple laptop in Bootcamp Windows 7 or my HP laptop in Vista, while my MacBook could access both sides of the drive. HOWEVER, after this crash, BOTH my Windows 7 and Vista can access both sides of the drive (so My files are still all there and accessible) but my MacBook Pro swears that the Apple partition is doomed.
Since the Apple side of my laptop is my primary workhorse I really want to figure out how to fix my drive.
    So Questions:
    1. Anything else I can provide to the experts out there to help me get this fixed?
    2. Can I custom fix this via accessing the drive on either of the Windows systems?
    3. Why would it suddenly show up in Windows when it became unaccessible to Mac?
    Thanks All!

    UPDATE:
It has been maybe a month since this happened.
After I made this post and was checking emails, walking away from computer, and then came back my Mac partition of the External Drive has shown up on the Desktop...
So, in the ever immortal way of asking the tech to come check the issue and the issue resolving itself, perhaps I should posted on the forum sooner...
NOTE: The disk still shows up as unusable in the Disk Utility and it appears that the files are read only (cannot make a new folder on this side of the external drive)
I still consider this a volatile issue because I do not want to lose the files on this half of the partition and I have not gotten a replacement drive yet (too much data to move to my computer and then format the current drive)

  • I have recently purchased an iMac from the Apple store. I previously had a windows computer and I transferred all my important files and music from the old computer onto an external hard drive. I've plugged the hard drive in and I can't seem to locate it!

    Hi everyone,
Before I set up my new iMac, I transferred all my important files from my old windows computer (pictures, documents, iTunes etc) onto an external hard drive. I had no trouble using and locating my hard drive on my old computer, however I'm having great difficulty finding it on my iMac. The external hard drive is plugged in with all wires connected and correct. I've tried all the USB ports and I still can't locate it!
I just want to transfer everything from my hard drive to the iMac!
If anyone could help me locate and guide me through the process of using an external hard drive on an iMac, then that would be brilliant!

  • How to open my apple formatted external hard drive in my pc?

Hi guys. I have [or had...] an Australian Imac 27". I do not have the specifications now because the computer died last night. I was working and than suddenly everything slowed down. I tried to open Itunes and icon became an interrogation mark after I clicked it; in the aplications folder several programs had a red mark (sign) in their icons.
Well, I already did all kind of boots and resets and I think I probably my computer died [internal hd]. I live in Mali (Africa), thousands of miles from the nearest genius bar or apple stores.
My immediate problem is with my partitioned 4TB My Book II external hard drive [do not know how it was formatted]. It had in one HD my time machine and in the other some crucial files.
Now I am using a PC and I do not see the contents of the HD. Sure, the PC connects to it showing that there is a partitioned hard drive. But it does not open.
Do you think is a MAC OS - Windows problem? [fat x ntfs] How can I solve this problem?

  • Apple TV/External Hard drive Question

    Here's my problem...
Next year I will going away to college. I have a relitively large DVD collection, and don't really want to take all of the physical DVDs with me. i've figured out how to get the DVDs onto my Macbook Pro using Handbreak. The problem is, I won't have enough space to do my whole DVD library.
Would it be possible to store all of my movies on an external hard drive, and keep all of my music still on the Mac? I know that iTunes would only allow me to watch the movies when my HD was plugged in, but I don't want to have to keep my HD plugged in to listen to my music. If all of this is possible, would the Apple TV still recognize my iTunes movies with the external harddrive plugged in? I hope all of this makes sense.
In short... I want my movies to work on my Apple TV (haven't bought one yet... not going to buy if this wouldn't work), but don't want them to stay on my Mac.
Any help or suggestions would be great

Yes it will work fine. In iTunes go to preferences -> Advanced -> then de tick 'Copy files to iTunes media folder when adding to library'. Then go to add to library (in the file menu) and navigate to your folder on your external HDD with your films and add it. All your films will be added to iTunes but iTunes looks to the external HDD to read them.

  • Trying to move iPod touch to new computer.  iTunes library from old computer already on external hard drive.  Don't want to lose playlists, apps, etc.  Help?

I am trying to move iPod touch to a new computer.  My iTunes library was already on a 1 TB external hard drive.  I downloaded iTunes on my new computer, plugged in my external hard drive with my iTunes library, and changed my iTunes media folder location (preferences-advanced) to my external hard drive location. But now all my songs are "checked" (all were not before) and none of my old playlists are present.  When I plug in my iPod touch to the new computer, it asks if I want to erase and sync.  I do not want to lose my playlists, apps, etc.  How do I move over to my new cpmputer without erasing my iPod and losing stuff?

Forgot to add, my iPod touch is backed up on iCloud

I got a usb hard drive thing
You've posted in the Airport forum, so is it connected to An Apple Airport Extreme?  If so, directly or via a USB hub?  If so, is it powered? Does the drive have it's own power supply?
Or is it connected to an Apple Time Capsule? Or directly to your Mac?  Or something else (ie, what)?
    How is it formatted?
and i try to turn on time maching it turns it self off. I try to back up it says disk cannot be found or somthing like that.
What does it actually say?  If you're not sure, post a screenshot.
I tried selecting the disk but that doesnt work either.
What do you mean by "doesnt work"?  What happens, or doesn't happen.  Any messages?  If so, what, exactly?

  • Transfer old mac files from external hard drive back onto my mac

I just had my logic board replaced by Apple, out of warranty, on my 2008 Macbook pro. As advised by Apple, I had another computer store copy my entire hard drive onto an external drive as a backup. The guy at the other computer store wiped the hard drive on my computer and I sent it away for the repair.
I have my laptop back but for the life of me can't figure out how to copy my external hard drive back onto my macbook. Please help??!! I have already been without my computer for the 10 days it took Apple to do the repair and need to get my work done. The guy at the computer store said he made an exact copy of my hard drive. He also said that since my external hard drive was a little older (never used but purchased a few years ago) it might take a few hours to copy because it took him a few hours to get the files off my mac. Thanks to anyone who can help!

Why don't you attach the HDD with your data on it to your MBP and then drag and drop your folders to your restored MBP.
    Ciao.
When you say that he made an exact copy of your MBP HDD, is it a clone with the OS on it?  If so you can use Disk Utility>Restore to copy the information to your MBP.

  • Apple TV External Hard Drive (again)

I realize that there have been a TON of questions about hooking up an external hard drive to an Apple TV. Much of what I've read says that it can't be done without unsupported 3rd party software. I've also read that you need to have iTunes running on a computer in order to "feed" the Apple TV.
The reason that I would like to use an external drive with my Apple TV is because I do not want to have to have a worksation running whenever I want to watch television. I'm wondering if the following might be possible:
Copy all of my iTunes, photos, movies, etc. to a 2Tb external hard drive.
Network the 2Tb drive through my AirPort Extreme.
Connect my iPhone to my home wifi network and tell my iTunes on my phone to grab songs from my networked drive. (Can this be done? Everything hinges on this.)
Then stream my stuff to my Apple TV from my phone.
Anyone know if this can be done?

  • Viewing old itunes library via external hard drive

    'ello,
I have an external hard drive that I had linked up to my old  iMac, which has now died. I bought a new Macbook pro and want to plug in my old external into my wireless router and pick up my old itunes library. I have plugged in the external hard drive into the USB port on the router. If I look in Finder I can see the o2 router and I have tried to set Internet sharing to ON, but can't do it? I am not even sure that switching on Internet sharing will resolve the issue? Any help on this would be massive.
    Thank you.

    Hi Phil,
Why not just plug it directly into the computer over USB rather than going through the router? I'm also not sure what enabling Internet sharing would have to do with your ability to access the hard drive via the router. If anything there would be a setting on the router that you'd most likely need to enable to allow the USB content to be accessible as a network storage device.

  • Old Time capsule as external hard drive and hub?

I am thinking about purchasing a new AirPort Extreme.  I have an old Time Capsule that I would like to repurpose as an external hard drive attached to the new AirPort Extreme.  Would I still be able to use the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule as a router to provide Internet access to a computer or printer? I am currently using all the ports on the Time Machine (Ethernet and USB) and wonder if I need a hub (Ethernet or USB) to now connect the Time Machine to an Airport Express and still handle all the existing connections or if the Time Machine can act as the hub.

You can just plug the TC in bridge mode into your new Extreme or express.. you swapped terms freely.. Express however has only one LAN port.. and the TC will still need to use one port to connect leaving you 3 WAN ports.
If you buy the Extreme it has 3 LAN ports.. one of which will be used for the connection and so you will add 2 LAN ports for usage on the network.. if that is not enough simply buy a gigabit switch.
BTW if you buy an express it has 100mbit ports not gigabit.. so I do not recommend the express.. you will slow everything down 10x.
You will gain a USB so if 2 is enough you will not need a USB hub.
