Old CRT HD TV is overscanning

I have a Toshiba 34HF81 16:9, Hi definition CRT TV.  Its highest resolution is 1080i.
The TV still works very well, but has a problem when connected either to my cable box/PVR or  a Blu Ray player: It overscans.  I lose the outer 10% of the picture, and I don't have the full resolution I should be getting with HD television because the image, in effect, is "blown up."
In both cases, I'm using the component or "Colorstream" inputs as Toshiba likes to call them.  The TV, being about 10 years old,  has no HDMI connection.
I don't have this problem when I play a DVD on my old DVD player of roughly the same vintage (also through the Colorstream inputs). Nor did I have this problem when my cable box was from a different provider (Bell Satellite).
It's quite annoying losing part of the picture--especially when my channel grid comes up and I can't even see what number the stations are because they're cut off.
Any suggestions?

You might want to try using the PIC SIZE button to cycle through the various display modes. One of them might work better.

  • Old crt monitor

i just picked up an old apple crt monitor and hooked it up to my macbook so i could have more space for creating music. i was wondering if there is any way to have the toolbar on both screens. when i have garageband opened on the big screen the toolbar is on my laptop screen. can i change it so its on both screens or on the monitor screen?

Well, when you have an additional monitor you should have the option to change some settings. Check the display option in the system preferences. There should be some additional settings to choose from.

  • Nvidia + Svideo TVout on old CRT TV

I ve been using arch linux for years for creating small servers with no gui with old machines.
Now I want to use a spare quite fast laptop I have for emulating MAME and other older systems that where meant to be played on a CRT screen. Since SVIDEO TV out on NT6.* doesnt even work and nvidia doesnt plan to fix it, and on tvout on Windows XP also doesnt work so well, I decided to try linux. Tried Ubuntu, and managed to make it work, with adding some lines to xorg.conf that exist also in this wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nvi … eo_Tearing with success. But lets face it, I dont like ubuntu, theres no learning new things, theres no compiling, theres no messing up with stuff.
I ve managed to set up a desktop enviroment, lots of manual work had to be done, I think some more automated wizards should be added for the most common setups, but still, its extremely fast, compared to ubuntu. I noticed that xorg is on some new/different version, with split configuration files. How am I to make a configuration file for forced, SVIDEO tvout like the one here, used for the old xorg.conf? http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nvi … eo_Tearing
The ideal would be to route the emulator output on TV, and when no emulator runs just leave it blank, but i would settle for a simple image cloning

You can still use an xorg.conf and put that stuff from the wiki page in it. Or you use a dedicated file for nvidia configuration in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d , both will work.

  • I am using an old CRT display, can I NARROW the aspect so I don't have to scroll rightwards?

Almost every website flows over the edge of the available visual field on this old monitor, so I must scroll to the right simply to see the whole field. I realize that this is for the newer, wide-aspect ratio displays, but isn't there a way to automatically narrow the field to fit my screen? I will try to change my display settings, but that will make the type much smaller, I think.... Take care, and thanks, DAVID

What is the resolution (width and height) of this screen?
Some websites still display fine with 1024x768, but a lot require a wider monitor to avoid scrolling horizontally.<br />
If you have less than 1024x768 then you should consider buying a LCD monitor.<br />
An LCD screen is probably much cheaper then what you have payed for the CRT screen and is also much easier for the eyes (pixels are one to one and no flicker).

  • Transfer files from old CRT iMac

My mom just got a new Intel iMac, and when she was setting it up, it told her she could transfer files from her old iMac using a firewire cable. Well, the old iMac doesn't have firewire. Does she have any other options? She's not very computer savvy, so I'm trying to make this as painless as possible for her. Thanks.

I don't know much about the transfer program, or whether or not it may use USB. The way I did it about 4 years ago was by using the file sharing feature. Doing it that way is a little more involved and takes some moderate knowledge of the Mac OS platform. I used just a run of the mill ethernet cable. I am sure you can find in apple support documents the procedure to connect the two. I would find the page for you myself but I need to get to work. I am late.

  • Screen bounces like a broken V-Hold on an old CRT TV.

Starting at approx 00:30 on 2 March 2011, when accessing Firefox V 4 Beta 12, the screen image within the browser window, bounces and will not stop. I have tried letting it sit to see if it stops on its own to no avail. I closed all other tabs, no impact. I have reinstalled the 4.12 build to no avail. any suggestions would be appreciated.

I don't know much about how Firefox works, but I had a similar issue with another browser, and believe it or not, my mouse was the culprit. The browser was receiving scroll commands from a user input device. I uninstalled my mouse from the listed devices on Device Manager in windows, unplugged it, plugged it back in, let windows re-install it and all was right in the world.
This may not be your problem at all, but anything is worth a try.

  • Set amount of TV overscan - possible?

I've got a Mini DVI -> s-video adaptor that I use to hook my macbook up to my old CRT TV to play videos. It works a treat, bar one thing: With overscan turned off, the picture is cut off a fair way inside the TV, but with overscan turned on it cuts off a fairly large amount of the picture.
So my question is: Is it possible to set the amount of overscan for a given external display? Something between the two extremes of "none" and "cut off a quarter of the picture" would be great.
I couldn't find anything in the display preferences, so I'm hoping there may be some magic plist-manipulation that I can do.

    Hi Kristen,
You have the compare function implemented incorrectly.  You need to make sure that the first terminal of the "Greater than or equal" function connected to the output of the sum, and the second terminal to the tick count in the while loop.  The first terminal corresponds to x parameter and the second terminal is for the y parameter.  So if x is greater than or equal to y, then the loop will need to exit.
You can see how long a subVI is taking if you put a flat sequence structure within your subVI around the entire subVI code.  The first frame would only have a tick count going into an indicator, the middle frame your normal code, and then the final frame would contain another tick count wired into another indicator.  Then you can subtract the second indicator value from the first and get hold long it took to execute the middle (core) of your code for that subVI.
I highly suggest using the highlight execution and probes and other debugging techniques such as breakpoints to diagnose where the data is being held up.

  • MacBook to CRT TV... is it possible?

    Hi all,
I have a 13" MacBook that I purchased in January 2010. I also have a very, very old CRT TV with an RCA port. I would like to hook up my laptop to the TV to watch YouTube videos and Netflix "watch instantly" videos on my TV screen.
After some internet research and phone calls, I'm still not confident I have the right answer. Before I go out and buy stuff, I wanted to...
    A) See if anyone has done this successfully in the past
    B) Make sure I'm buying everything I need but nothing extra
My best guess is that I need to buy...
    1) RCA jacks
    2) mini display port to s video/composite
    3) apple mini dvi to video adapter
Will those give me video AND sound? One website said I will also need...
    4) Audio Jack to RCA Audio Converter
One tech guy I spoke to thought even if I get picture and sound to the TV from the computer, it will be distorted and he thought I could probably only do this successfully with a newer TV.
Assuming that I know little about the ports on my laptop, and less about the ports on the TV, does anyone have any input on this project? Do all of the jacks I mentioned plug into each other or are there other parts I would need to buy to connect everything?
    Thank you in advance!

    Hi,
The later MacBooks (aluminum - late 2008 to present) have a Mini Display Port that is Digital Only. Your TV takes an analog signal. The older MacBooks had an Analog Mini DVI adapter with Composite and S-Video.
There are third party products - I bought the GrandTec PC to Video EZ Scan converter - that connects with the Mini Display Port to VGA adapter for the MacBook. It is powered via the USB port on the MacBook and offers S-Video and Composite (yellow plug) connection to the older TV's. It works. You need audio cables (Red and White) using a signal splitter as well as an RCA to RCA cable
So, the Mini DisplayPort to VGA goes for $29, the Converter for $29 at Amazon and the cables and splitter would be about $10 at Radio Shack.
It's not beautiful but if you absolutely need it, it will work. There is always the possibility of a new TV or a video projector.
    Hope this helps.

  • FCP and QT play to a second CRT monitor via FW800?

I have FCP installed on my iMAC, my iMAC has a FW800 and Mini DisplayPort.
I also have an old CRT monitor that I used for an older PC that I now want to view videos rendered on FCP. I read in the documentation that FCP can play/output to an external video device (using firewire amoung other things).
I'm not sure how to do this but is it possible to connect my iMAC via FW800 to my old CRT monitor?
If so what cables and converters do I need to get? Note that I do not have a video deck.
I basically need to see how my videos look on CRT displays. Currently I'm copying my videos to my PC and then playing them but I was hoping to skip that step.

stockfootage: Thanks, I'll try that out! I wasn't sure if I was suppose to use the FW800 or Mini DisplayPort port.
    Oh and yes, I'm both a ballerina and a graphics artist. <high 5's ya> ... <grin>
Bengt: Thanks for the warning, I have FCP 7, I wasn't too concearned with getting QT to work, it would be a plus though. But I basically wanted to see what the output looked like without having to transfer it to my PC and view it on my PC's CRT monitor each time.
e45blue: It's an old SONY CRT computer monitor, it's actually starting to die.
I have an old analog NTSC TV set with a digital TV converter box... though that old TV is dying too and it's in another room anyways.
I basically want to see how the production video I'm editing looks like on a CRT display. I'm using an iMAC to edit the videos and that iMAC is an LCD display so the colors look richer but always looks over exposed.
When I move the edited videos to my PC they look underexposed... and that is with my CRT monitor's contrast at maximum.

  • No adapter available for CRT studio display..?

    Hi everybody,
just got a handmedown old crt studio display:
    http://www.theapplecollection.com/design/macreleased/images/studio17_side.jpg
i thought i'd get an adapter and plug it to my imac to increase screen real estate (have been using a VGA display for some time like that)
Not so simple; the ADC connector seems like it's giving me no choice. I also have a latest macbook, also with mini-dvi output and same issue therefore.
Have been browsing forums but all i could dig was info related to the flat LCD panels and newer. Same for manufacturers, all adapters point to newer monitors.
So it's like either i keep for the looks or buy an old powermac G4/450 to suit..? Are these the only alternatives?
I imagine I'm not the very first person to ever come across this situation and maybe someone will be kind enough to offer some advice/share experience?
    Cheers!

    Chiz,
I own: Samsung 191T+, 19-inch LCD; Apple 20-inch LCD; Apple 23-inch LCD. There is no question (in my mind) that the Apples are sexier looking. I like the wide screen and the design. But, the price is stiff. The Samsung has a traditional 3:4 aspect ratio as opposed to the Apple 10:16. The Samsung models ending in the letter T have typically been of higher quality.
You should spend some time on the MWave website and look at the various Samsung models.
My Samsung has been connected to my iBook (via the analog (VGA)) port and to my PowerBook and PowerMac (via the digital (DVI)) port.
I won't buy ViewSonic because of bad experiences (5 blown high voltage power supplies) on their CRT models. I have no experience with Sony nor NEC.
Unless you are a gamer, you can ignore reponse time. Resolution is fixed for the screen size. LCDs have a native resolution; unlike CRTs. All manufacturers lie about contrast and brightness.
I recommend buying monitors from local stores. That way you can inspect YOUR monitor before you buy it.
I would recommend that you call Other World Computing and talk to them about video cards.

  • Does studio display CRT work with any new machine at all??

My old G4 just died. I got a mini but can't figure out how to connect it to this 17" CRT. Is there any new machine compatible with this old CRT? Do I have to find another G4 to work with it or do I have to dump it?
    Please help

Thanks hsurfer. The link you have provided gives a helpful insight. Those with the macbook pro are able to switch from their 9400 graphics card to the better 9600 graphics card, which resolves the issue, at least with the samsung monitor. We who have the macbook however do not have the option. The problem does seem to clearly emanate from the macbook graphic card, lets hope that a fix is still around the corner, the latest firmware update clearly did not resolve it.
Im still looking for success stories, anyone who can say that their specific external 22'/24' monitor works fine with the new macbook?
    kind regards

  • Apple TV and 32" crt

    Hi to everybody,
does the Apple TV work with a Thomson Scenium 32" 100 Hz cathodic tube?
Thanks in advance for the replies!

    << <a class="jive-link-external-small" href="http://">http://www.svideo.com/appletv2tv.html
kinda pricy though so if you're thinking about getting a new
    tv nows the time >>
Thanks for this Rudegar. Widescreens are coming down in price here, and will continue for a while yet. To wait 6/months-1/year more will easily pay for an AppleTV now, to run with my old CRT TV.
I was hoping this could be done. The old CRT TV is still in very good order.

  • Connect to an Old TV?

I just bought a new Apple TV and thought I'd move the old, 1st-generation Apple TV to the old CRT television in another room. The old TV only has RCA and S-Video inputs.  The 1st-generation Apple TV has composite, HDMI and optical outputs.  Is there an adapter or something I can use to pipe the Apple TV signal into my old CRT television?

the old appletv does not have composite
    but RCA is composite
the old appletv have component which is a bit like composite as in it use the same connectors as composite the connector type called RCA
if you connect the yellow composite rca connector to the green component rca connector on the appletv you get a black and white signal
there are converters but they cost you this is the google you would want to do to find one

  • Trouble transferring files etc from old iMac to G4.

My friend has an old CRT iMac, not sure of the precise model but it's one the fruit coloured ones running OS 10.1. She's upgrading to my old flat panel G4 iMac running 10.4.11 but we've had trouble transferring her files, settings etc. First we tried using an ethernet cable but migration assistant on the G4 told us we needed to use firewire. She's bought a firewire cable, plugged it in & opened migration asst on the G4 but is getting no response at all. Could anyone advise us on what she should be doing please?
    Thanks,
    Janet.

By no response I mean no error message, no recognition at all by either iMac.
That sounds like a problem with getting FireWire Target Disk Mode going on the iMac G3. Be sure to review the article I linked to previously, and make sure the iMac can startup in the mode where you see the FireWire logo bouncing around the screen.
Note: If that iMac is one of the early slot-loader iMac G3 models, it needs to have +Firmware version 2.4 or later+ for FireWire Target Disk Mode to work (as noted in the article). So the Mac OS X version (even though it is old) will not prevent FireWire Target Disk Mode from working, but the firmware version may. If you can run System Profiler on that iMac G3, it should say what firmware version it has now (it may be called +Boot ROM+ ).

  • AppleVision CRT stuck in resolution limbo

I'm not sure where best to post this but will start here... A few months ago I brought home an old AppleVision 17" CRT from the office graveyard and started using it with my G5, because its viewable area was a little bigger than that of my NEC MultiSync 70, and I liked how it looked.
Tonight I was trying to change the desktop image and getting frustrated because I couldn't seem to get the portion of the image I wanted to fill the screen no matter how I fiddled with the original in Photoshop. So I started fooling around with the resolution.
Unlike with the MultiSync, the G5 doesn't recognize exactly what monitor this is, identifying it only as "VGA Display." So some of the listed resolutions don't work and the screen goes black if you select those. It's supposed to come back and offer you the chance to revert to the previous setting if you click the mouse or hit return, I forget which, while you're in the black screen, and that has worked before. But this time I did something spastic, I think. It went back to black and all sorts of keystroke combinations failed to bring it back. Forcing power down and restarting (twice) only got it as far as the solid blue, blank screen; then it went black again.
I disconnected it and reconnected the Multisync, which is working fine. I hoped that would serve to reset something, but when I tried reconnecting the AppleVision it still couldn't finish booting up.
So then I connected the AppleVision to my main PM 7600. On the first boot the progress bar stalled at an inch or so, without displaying any icons. But the second time, it finished the boot and everything is displaying normally.
This is all beyond me--I have no idea what happened. Is the display "unstuck" now and likely to work with the G5 again? Should I trash com.apple.systempreferences.plist first? Or is it better (for the sake of the computers and/or the safety of operating these old CRTs) to leave well enough alone, i.e., let the 7600 run the AppleVision and the G5 run the not-so-ancient MultiSync?
    PM G5 2.0 DC; two PM 7600s; Mini (at work) Mac OS X (10.4.7) 7600/120: 604e (233 mHz), 128 MB RAM, 2 IHDs, USB, OS 9.1

    Kathi,
Glad things started to resolve in your favor. : D
You said "If I try to go to the smaller (?) resolutions, e.g. 1024 x 768, the color depth changes from millions to thousands. On the G5, it was set at 1024 x 768, 60 Hz. "
It is all about math. If you have 640 x 480 pixels on the screen and each pixel has a colour depth of 8, then you need the computational power of 6404808 = 2,457,600 (bits or bytes - I need to check that brain cell) to handle that much data.
    A colour depth of 256 is 640480256=78,643,200
A colour depth of 32,768 (or what is referred to as thousands is 64848032,768=10,066,329,600
A colour depth of 16.2 million colours (introduced in 1987 with the Mac II - which also caused panic in the IBM camp that boasted 256 colors at the time) is 640480approx 12,200,000=4,976,640,000,000
    (4.97664 × 10 to the 12th)
A color depth of thousands at a resolution of
    102476832,768=25 769 803 776
Now jump to millions of colors. That calculates out at 1024768162000000=12740198400000
or 1.274... to the 13th power.
Once you hit an integer with thirteen zeros after it, you need a lot more video ram. I will try and find a website with a good illustration of the video math that happens at 30 frames per second. Forget the math that Excel is doing inside a spreadsheet, that is child's play compared to what video processors are doing thirty frames a second to bring motion images to the screen.
    Just something to ponder.
