Old hard drive, New MacBook

Hi,
I have just purchased a new Aluminium MacBook to replace my previous white plastic MacBook.
In the old MacBook I had a 250GB with OSX 10.5 from WD which I installed myself however when I put this into the new metal MacBook it just keeps restarting. It does start up with the HDD that the metal MacBook came with though.
What should I do?

The new MacBook needs the version of OS X that comes on its install discs. Put the old drive into an external enclosure and use Migration Assistant. Or if you still have the old MacBook, use target disk mode and Migration Assistant. Or, boot from your new machine's install disc and do an Archive and Install.

Hi,
My Macbook wouldn't boot, hard drive was making an odd sound, only would go to the gray/blue screen with the flashing ? folder. I bought a new hard drive and installed it, used Leopard DVD to boot, went to Disk Utility and the only thing that showed up was the DVD. I tried re-seating the drive and still nothing.
Any Suggestions?

Hey hauebj01 and welcome to the forum -
I know it's a hassle but I've heard of some folks having quite a bit of trouble seating replacement drives. You might try that again. Sometimes you have to push harder than you think you should. Make sure that nothing is obstructing the connection.
Also, the drive may be bad. If you have an external enclosure, you can see if you get the same result with it in there.
By the way, which HDD did you purchase?

IPhoto/Hard Drive/New Macbook/Transfer?

Hi Folks
I have a problem I'm not sure how to go about tackling.
I have just bought a new Macbook. On my old Macbook, I have had my iPhoto Library on an external hard drive. I want to be able to do the same thing on my new Macbook, using the same hard drive where all the photo's are stored, without disturbing the photo's. The hard drive used is also partitioned into three sections, just in case that is of any relevance. (iPhoto, music, and miscellaneous files)
I would greatly appreciate any advice as to how to go about this. Please explain in laymans terms, as I'm a bit stupid.

Simple. You not clear as to what you want
If you want to use the existing set up on your new computer unmount and disconnect the EHD from to old computer and connect it to the new computer, depress the option key, launch iPhoto and use the select library command to point to the EHD
If you want to duplicate the set up connect both hard drives to your new computer, partition the new EHD and drag the thing you want to it, unmount and disconnect the old EHD and move it back to the old computer and on the new computer option launch iPhoto pointing to the EHD

Old Hard Drive, New PC

The logic board in my 2010 MacBook Pro failed. I got an estimate of anywhere from $600-$1000 to fix it. I bought a cheap PC laptop with plans to sell the MacBook. Before I sell it though, I want to be sure I wipe the hard drive.
My plan is to remove the hard drive, buy an enclosure, and connect this to my new laptop to erase everything. Is the fact that it's not a Mac going to give me issues?
As plan B I could keep the hard drive in the enclosure and use it as an external backup. But how much less would my old MacBook Pro sell for without a hard drive?

During my working career as a condition of employment, I had to carry around a Windows laptop.
The only saving grace for me was that we had a group called deskside support. So if it started acting weird or every 6 months I took it to them and said fix it.
So I never did anything at all with the laptop.
I figure they hired me to work on the OpenVMS servers and not that stupid laptop.
They actually offered to sell me that laptop when I retired. I told they didn't have enough money to make me take it.

If you have a G5 that uses SATA drive then you can install it however you will not be able to boot from it. If you have a PATA drive then you can always install it in the 2nd optical drive bay but you need tohe right brackets to have it secure.

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.

I think how you understand the value of having backups. All you can do is:
General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive. Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk. Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

You will need an external enclosure for the old drive so you can connect it to the computer in order to try the recovery software before you buy it. But if they don't work then you will need to send the drive to a recovery service such as Drive Savers.

Open the Get Info window for the old drive. Click the Lock icon on the bottom of that window and type in your password. In the permissions area click the Plus sign ( + ) and Add your Username to it and set it to Read & Write. Close that window. you should now have full access to all the files.

You do not need to load 10.5.8 onto your new drive in order for a 10.6.8 system to see the contents of a 10.5.8 system.

They also sell a product named Phoenix that can do OS extraction and volume copying/cloning, but to be honest I don't know if it's appropriate in this case.
I would suggest the following:
Open up Terminal.app (under utilities) and type "diskutil list" without the quotes. This is the command line version of Disk Utility. If the external drive doesn't show up at all, then it's likely not connected properly, not getting power, or just plain dead. If it shows up with only a devce name like disk0s16 but no volume it means the drive is seen, the OS just can't make sense of it.
Assuming the drive shows up, I would try to boot off the original installl disks for the system and run Disk Utility from that. I'm assuming the drive will show up. You'll want to select the option to repair the drive and then perform the option to repair the permissions.
If the unit isn't showing up, as per step 1, try a different USB port. More importantly with your unit, try it on another side of the unit if possible. If you read the book I referenced above, some of those units have I/O boards that are separated from the logic board. If the cable from the logic board to the I/O card goes bad or has problems, which isn't all that uncommon, some or all of the ports on the I/O card may appear to be bad as well. If you use a USB port on another side, it would be routing out of a completely different I/O path, so that's a potential problem.
If the drive is only seen with a device name such as disk0s16, it's likely either the index files are corrupt beyond Disk Utility's ability to see them. The only thing that I think would help would be a product named DIsk Warrior, but I can't guarantee that.

The company that I linked in the first link above also makes a product named Scannerz that does HD and system testing. The Scannerz/Disk Warrior combination make a good pair because the complement each other....Scannerz does what Disk Warriror can't and Disk Warrior does what Scannerz can't. However, at this point I'm not too sure getting a tool like Scannerz would be of much use because it sounds like the damage has already been done.
Let us know what happens.

Macbook screen cracked. How to transfer files from old hard drive to new computer?

I had a 13" white macbook, but the screen cracked, and the computer wouldn't work anymore. I took it to be fixed, but they weren't able to fix it, so they gave me a macbook pro. I asked them to try and transfer the files from my old macbook to the old one, but they said that they couldn't, and gave my the hard drive and said I could have someone else try to fix it for me. How do I connect the old hard drive to my new macbook to see if I can get the files off of it? I don't have the old computer anymore, just the hard drive itself. Thanks!

Old hard drive on New MacBook Pro

When I left my job, I brought a new MacBook Pro and had my old hard drive transferred over. Now I have an email address (lcole "at" ma-1) and server (MA-1) that I believe are associated with old employer. Is it safe for me to delete server? How can I change the email address?

Tech support at my former employer did the migration from my Time Machine backup for me... So yes, they do that I have this new machine.
My goal is to remove any reminents of the former network, hence the question about the server and email.

If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.

Old macbook replaced with new one, still have old hard drive.

I have the old hard drive from my non functioning 3 year old white macbook. Today I have a new white macbook complements of extended warranty. I tried swapping the old drive with the new, but it entered into a boot up loop. It chimes, sits there on the grey screen, then reboots. I'm assuming this is due to upgraded hardware in the new macbook being incompatible with OSX Tiger on the old drive.
So is it possible to put the old drive into an external drive case and run the migration assistant to transfer all the settings, apps, etc across? Is there another way I can make the old drive work with the the new macbook? Thought I might ask before I start shelling out for an external drive case or paying the apple repair store to transfer my data.

Yes you could install it into an external drive case. (They are not that expensive).
Yes, you could reformat the drive GUID partition and install your OS on it.

I have replaced my old hard drive on a MacBook Pro midyear 2010 with a new SSD drive. I have a complete system backup of my old drive in an external hard drive using Time Machine.
Questions that I would like to get answered.
1) Can I connect my external hard drive to the macbook pro and use that to boot up my machine by pressing and holding down the Options key? Once booted up successfully, can I use Disk Utility to format the new SSD and then restore the complete time machine backup?
2) If that is not possible, can I use my old drive which I can connect using a USB adapter and use that to boot up by following the same strategy as listed in Step#1 above?
3) If neither options are possible, do I need to use a bootable USB drive for Mavericks OS X to boot up the machine,
I have Mavericks OS X ( 10.9.6) and I do not have a DVD of the OS.
Any help is appreciated.

Let me first document the steps that did not work and then I will document the steps that worked.
1) Replaced the hard drive with SSD.
2) Connected the original hard drive using a USB adapter to the MacBook to make it behave like an external device.
3) Powered on the machine and on hearing the chime pressed Command-R to start in recovery mode.
4) Chose the Disk Utility option to erase and format the SSD. The format chosen was Mac OS Extended Journaled.
5) Once the formatting was done, then clicked on the "Restore" tab in Disk Utility
6) In the Source field, dragged my original hard drive from the left pane and placed it in the field
7) On the destination field, choose the new SSD drive. Clicked on "Restore". Gave me a warning, accepted the warning and the restore was under way.
8) I had 236 GB to restore so took 3.5 hours before it was done.
9) Disconnected the external hard drive ( my original internal HDD), shut down the machine and powered on again.
10) Heard the chime and after that it was a white screen with no Apple logo.
Was visibly upset and started thinking what my next move will be. Then tried these steps
1) Again powered off the machine.
2) Connected my internal HDD once more as an external drive
3) Powered on and on hearing the chime, pressed Command-R as before
4) Once the OS X utilities screen popped up, this time chose Install OS X
5) Erased the contents of SSD once more and reformatted it using Mac OS Extended Journaled.
6) Installed OS X by following the prompts.
7) Once the OS was installed, I was presented with an option on how to transfer data to this new Mac
8) Chose the option to move the data from my original HDD.
9) Took another 3 hours to move the data.
10) Removed the original HDD once the transfer was complete, powered down the machine and started it once more.
11) Booted successfully and all my content is now accessible on the new SSD.
Moral of the story - It is the spirit that counts.
