Old W500 Takes ~10 minutes to get to POST on startup

Hello,
I recently started having some trouble with my old trusty W500. Here are my specs:
W500 4058 CTO
CPU: Core 2 Duo T9400
RAM: 4 GB (2 x 2 GB)
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 SP1
HDD1: 128 GB OCZ SSD
HDD2 (ultrabay): 500 GB WD Black HDD
Graphics: FireGL v5700 (+ integrated graphics, switchable)
Display: WUXGA (1920 x 1200)
Here are my symptoms:
- PC is completely shut down
- Press power button >>> AC, Battery, and Power LEDs are on, but the screen is completely black and does not appear to be on at all. I can hear cooling fans.
- After 30 seconds to 1 minute, the bluetooth LED turns on. Screen is still black.
- Roughly 9-10 minutes later, I see the diagnostics POST screen. Usually, the text flashes by and this screen is gone after a few seconds. However, it appears to linger on each entry for a bit, but shows no errors.
- After POST, I see a black screen with the blinking cursor in the upper left corner for maybe 30 seconds
- Then windows starts up as normal. Computer runs fine.
- When I try to shut down, windows shuts down, but my battery, AC, and power LEDs stay on, and the fan stays on. I have to hard shut-down to get the fan and the power LED to turn off completely. However, doing a restart from windows works fine without having to press the power button (though I still see the above symptoms on the ensuing start-up).
Here is what I have tried so far:
- Originally, I thought this was a power/battery issue, so I replaced my original battery with an Anker branded battery (works great so far). Also, my original AC adapter had a break in the cord somewhere that was causing it to lose power if I moved the cord, and since my battery was essentially dead, the computer would shut off. I was worried that it was my motherboard causing the power issue because the original battery wasn't even being charged or discharged, but the new battery charges fine and powers the computer just fine. New AC adapter works great as well. None of this affected startup.
- I have re-seated the RAM. No effect.
- I have removed the ultra-bay and ultra-bay drive. No effect.
- I have cleared CMOS memory. No effect.
What should I try next? Anyone have any idea what this sounds like? Are there any tests I should perform and report back?
Thanks for your help.
W500, WUXGA

Memtest 86+ passed with no errors after 1 full run. I removed the SSD and HDD, it still did not quickly POST. I removed the RAM (first one stick, then the other). No change, except with both DIMMs removed I did get the 1-3-3-1 beep error code (as expected). What does this tell us?
It's not the SSD/HDD/RAM/OS. Perhaps the system board? What might be wrong with it? I want to reiterate, once I'm booted and I'm up and running, everything works just fine! Although, I can't seem to switch to integrated graphics for some reason. Perhaps that is a clue? Or a red herring.
What can I try next?

  • I have read the various threads regarding slow boot up times, on my 2009 MBP it takes 1 minute to get a usable interface but without doing anything else the HD is active for a further minute, is this reasonable ?

    My MBP after the Lion upgrade takes 1 minute to put something usable on screen and without doing anything else the HD is active for another minute.
    I have visited the Genius bar where they went through some maintenance routines and permissions repaired etc but the boot up time remains the same.
    I have cleared the cache as suggested in other threads but is this the best I can expect as with SL the computer booted up in about 30 seconds ?
    I recall reading there may be unwanted  programs loading at boot up time but I do not know where to look in the system to check.

    Thanks for the reply, I have followed your suggestion but unfortunately it has not improved the boot time, do you have any further advice you could offer me ?
    I use my MBP for working on and storing my photographic images following my Photoshop adjustments, these individual image files are between 50 to 60Mb, I was reading about OSX self defragmenting files below 20Mb, these files are not intended as start up items but do you think storing approx 200Gb of these files could be having so effect ? I am a fromt end user so my limited knowledge is restricted to repairing permissions etc. I am probably clutching at straws but it be better to store these images on an external HD in addition to my backups on other HD's.
    Thanks.

  • FTP problem: connection going idle or missing; takes a minute to refresh

    Hi, i hope i explain myself, please forgive me my lack of tech-language and if i'm redundant:
    In my office we got a G5 dual that we turn into a server (Mac OS Server 10.5.7) for a couple of websites (for external use). I need this guys to have FTP access for some file sharing. Server is up, websites and databases are running fine, remote administration in local and external network is flawless, everything seems fine, except for the FTP: When i connect with cyberduck or any other FTP app, the authentication is done quickly but then, the connection goes idle (like it didn't exists) so the folder listing takes about a minute. Then, as soon as you get the listing, if you try to put something (i.e, a big file of 50mb, using the local network), the app makes a quick login but then it goes idle again (same, about a minute) and when the connections appears, the transfer goes really fast, after the transfers ends connection goes idle again a minute before managing the folder listing. I know that the connection "goes idle" or "disappears" because i started using little snitch to take a look at it. It appears like if the ftp app wasn´t even trying to connect, then suddenly, it´s there and connects/transfers. Every operation takes this minute to get going. If i try it with a browser, well, it times out. This is happening in both, local and external connection. But every other service is working cool.
    Can you give me any ideas about this matter?

    Ok, rather than going for the most problematic protocols known to modern networking, try with something simple.
    Don't test with ftp, test with sftp.
    I would initially suspect you're running into issues with firewalls here; beyond transmitting your credentials in cleartext, the design of ftp is inherently extremely allergic to firewalls, and particularly to transfers over connections that involve both local and remote firewalls.
    ftp is funky here in that it needs two connections between the client and the server, and the second connection tends to get blocked. An ftp active-mode connection has a back-connect from the ftp server to an ephemeral port on the client; traversing firewalls from server to client. An ftp passive-mode connection has a forward connection; a second parallel connection from the client to a specified (usually) ephemeral port on the ftp server; traversing the firewalls.
    Ignoring explicit transfer-mode selection, various clients can (transparently) try to switch between active and passive, too.
    My preferred approach is to avoid ftp. At all. Use sftp. sftp is far easier to punch through firewalls. And sftp doesn't transmit your username and password in cleartext, for that matter.
    The other part of this effort is around ensuring proper file protections and ownership in the web server directories. The web-facing file ownership should be user:www (often root:www) and the www user (the web server) should be able to read its web files, but (in general) should not be able to write to the web files or directories. This is defensive.

  • Why does it take over 2 minutes to get a database connection from the DataSource?

    Hello,
    It is taking over 2 minutes for my application to get a connection from a registered DataSource in iAS 6.0 sp4 on Solaris. The proper results are returned it just takes 2 minutes to establish the connection. The DataSource is an Oracle 9i database. I have the 9i drivers in the classpath. I also have a registered datasource that is an Oracle 8 database and have no problems establishing a connection quickly to that database. As an aside I have setup this application on JBOSS and both datasource's return a connection very quickly. If anyone has any ideas about what might be going on please respond. This issue is holding up a production release.
    Here is the code:
    try {
    log.debug("getting a new initial context");
    ctx = new InitialContext();
    ds = (DataSource) ctx.lookup(bundle.getString("IW_DATASOURCE"));
    log.debug("after looking up datasource from initial context");
    } catch (NamingException e) {
    log.error(e);
    throw new FinstarException
    (bundle.getString("E-0001"));
    try {
    log.debug("about to get connection");
    conn = ds.getConnection();
    log.debug("after getting connection");
    Produces this in the logs:
    2002-05-29 08:55:12,859 DEBUG org.mitre.mii.project.finstar.FinancialSummary - about to get connection
    2002-05-29 08:57:24,963 DEBUG org.mitre.mii.project.finstar.FinancialSummary - after getting connection
    Here is the datasource registration file:

    Have you tried to eliminate everything extraneous. In other words, do you experience the same delays with a simple Java program (no lookups, JNDI) that loads the drivermanager and creates a connection.
    Do you have access to a traciong JVM or some program that captures run-time execution timing information? Even without the source, this will tell you the specific class::methos where time is spent so you can better determine where the delay is ocurring.

    Go under settings, mail, contacts and calendars and then choose only to sync back 50 or 100 or 1000 mails. Chances are you don't really need the old ones on your device and it'll save room (I have mine set to 50)

    Apple,
    How did you test this Mountain Lion? Was it in a zoo cage with just 30 feet for it to run? Because out in the open it can't even walk!

    Thank you also for telling me that the upgrade would take 34 minutes - it took 56.

    It did work properly, for almost everyone.
    You must have something on your computer that is causing it problems. Try booting into Safe Mode and see if you still have the problems.
    If not, then you have a third-party incompatibility.
    If the problems still exist, I would suggest reinstalling. Lion had the same complaints. Many people fixed it just by reinstalling.
    Others had to resort to erasing the drive and then reinstalling and migrating from Time Machine.
    Others gave up and went back to Snow Leopard.

  • Crystal XI causing reports to take 20+ minutes to open

    We use Crystal Reports with TIER (totally integrated electronic record).  Our computer system is part of a state network.  Our TIER programmer lives in another city.  He creates Crystal reports from his location and we create them here at our facility also.  Last week his local server (on the state network) was replaced.  The server in question is not used by us -- our database is located on another server and our reports are also located elsewhere.  Network staff said we should see no impact at all since we do not use that server.  When they took down his local server (they were switching from a novell server to a microsoft server) -- we suddenly developed a problem opening reports.  They would open, but only after 20 minutes or longer.  After much troubleshooting we were able to figure out that any reports the programmer did were the problem.  Any reports created here were opening fine.  Once opened, all reports ran fine and queried the database quickly as usual.  There is no question about how he creates reports versus how we do -- he taught us and has started reports here that do work.  We finally got the network guys to start up the old server in the other city.  As soon as they did, our reports worked correctly again.  We have gotten them to agree to leave that server up while we work this out.  It seems Crystal is automatically tying to the original user's originating server for some reason.  I can't find any place in Crystal to change this.  I opened several reports, re-saved them from here but it didn't change anything.  I also went in through Crystal and Set Datasource Location (updated each field in report), but it didn't help.  I think the reason that isn't working is because there isn't anything wrong with the connection to the database itself.  For whatever reason it is like Crystal is searching for that old server for 20 minutes, finally decides to move on and then the report opens (sorry, not a very technical description).  We use a ton of reports and right now my only option is to rebuild from scratch or ensure the old server is left up and running indefinitely. Does anyone have any idea how to break the apparent automatic connection to that old server?

    You are making me think it might be a connection configuration or local machine space/frag issue. Both of these are easy to rule out - does your machine have an automatic maintenance policy (sweep for virus, defragment hard drives, and clean out junk files)?  Can your network techs do a trace test to see if there are bottlenecks in the connection?
    I still think you will want to use the data-base expert and find out what the default table bindings are.  You would not need to rebuild the reports, just re-configure the tables and links.  As long as the tables have the same fields and field names on the different source tables you will be fine.
    How big are the report templates? (multiple pages, intense graphic loads with charts or formatting, heavy calculations performed on the report level...).  Are they stored remotely or on the local workstation? Remote connections can take a while to get the report to the local machine if not properly configured (even if known to be connected and clear).
    The slow too open reports are still indicative of bad links.  You don't have to rebuild the reports, just re point the default source tables.

  • CS2 Doc Converted to CS3 takes 2+ Minutes to Open Every Time

    We are in the process of switching 34 users from ID CS2 to ID CS3 and are having file conversion nightmares. They need to re-use their old CS2 ad layouts but many users are complaining that the conversion to CS3 takes several minutes. In our test period we had noted that but once the doc was converted the subsequent file opening time in CS3 was greatly reduced. But it now appears that when some users are opening the converted and saved docs they are still experiencing the same file opening delays as when the docs were being converted from CS2. Then a different user will open the same doc and it will open immediately. We have tried to find a common setup or preference or plug-in issue that might be a problem, but so far have struck out. 6 users have brand new MacPros running Leopard 10.5.2 with all Adobe CS3 patches installed. This group uses identically configured everything and they still have inconsistent file opening behavior! Some open instantly and others take 2-5 minutes for the same file. We have noted similar inconsistency amongst our users who still have GS PowerMacs running Tiger 10.4.11. Their CS3 is patched and fully updated. Now I would expect there to be inconsistencies between the Tiger and Leopard G5 and Intel groups, but we see the same thing with the same file taking different amounts of time to open after having been converted and saved and then opened again with the same-configuration users, no matter what they are using.
    We use a Xinet file and print server and all users are supposed to work on files off the server so the working file stays up to date, but for testing we have been having them download the same files to their desktops and opening them. One of my test Macs is an Intel Mac running Tiger 10.4.11 and Adobe CS3 all updated and I use the same 3rd party plug-ins as everyone else. We only use two sets of 3rd party plug-ins - the Xinet WebNative and FullPress plug-ins and Extensis Suitcase X1 client Auto-Activation plug-in getting fonts from a Suitcase server.
    We don't have the problem if documents are created from scratch in CS3. Unfortunately, it will take a very long time to get to where we would never be using any of our old CS2-created files, so we need to figure out a workable solution. It is mainly a question of time, which is something you never have enough of before your press deadline and the users are balking at the amount of production time they are losing waiting for files to open. They have a tendency to force-quit InDesign before it can finish opening and then they have to deal with all the file recovery dialogues the next time. They are getting very frustrated.
    Has anyone run into this behavior or come up with a solution? If so I'd love to hear from you!
    Thanks, Laura K.

    Hi Kevin,
    I did some more trial and error testing since I posted my original message. This is what seems to be working:
    You can leave the Suitcase Auto Activation plug-in there, but if you go into its preferences make sure the box for "Activate fonts in embedded objects" is not checked.
    That made all the difference - so far. I need to try this on a couple more of my troubled Macs before I will declare victory!
    In the Suitcase Client prefs you should also turn off Suitcase's auto activation and let the application plug-in handle that. I read that somewhere else a couple days ago, maybe it was the Extensis forums? Can't remember. But that's how I have mine set on my test Macs. (one MacPro running Tiger and a MacBook Pro running Leopard)
    Hope that helps!
    Laura K.

    drop index DSP_DATA_IDX;
    create index DSP_DATA_MEASUREMENT_ID_IDX on DSP_DATA (MEASUREMENT_ID) TABLESPACE dsp_data_idx_tspace LOCAL;

    Also, you have stated that to create global index on src and dst. How do i create them.
    Thanks in Advance.
