  • How to diagnode OMS problems

    Greetings,
Over the weekend our OMS crashed and I am trying to determine the cause and have two questions.
    1) I believe the emoms.log & emoms.trc files are the appropriate files to examine, is this correct?
    2) Is there documentation anywhere which helps explain how to read the emoms files? There is so much information I am having difficulty determining what is relevant and what is not.
    3) Are there other logs I should be looking at?
    Thank you.
    Bill Wagman

Check out this chapter in the Admin guide  Locating and Configuring Enterprise Manager Log Files
    Snippet below:
    AGENT:
Oracle Management Agent metadata log file (gcagent.log) This log file contains trace, debug, information, error, or warning messages from the agent.
Oracle Management Agent fetchlet trace file (gcagent_sdk.trc) This log file contains logging information about fetchlets and receivelets.
Oracle Management Agent errors log file (gcagent_errors.log) This error log file contains information about errors. The errors in this file are duplicate of the errors in gcagent.log.
Oracle Management Agent metadata log file (gcagent_mdu.log) This log tracks the metadata updates to the agent.
Enterprise Manager Control log file (emctl.log) The information is saved to emctl.log file, when you run the Enterprise Manager Control commands. For more information about emctl.log file, see chapter Starting and Stopping Enterprise Manager Components.
OMS log and trace files store important information that Oracle Support can later use to troubleshoot problems. OMS uses the following six types of log files:
Oracle Management Service log file (emoms.log) The Management Service saves information to the log file when it performs an action (such a starting or stopping) or when it generates an error. This is a log file for console application.
Oracle Management Service trace file (emoms.trc) OMS trace file provides an advanced method of troubleshooting that can provide support personnel with even more information about what actions the OMS was performing when a particular problem occurred. This is a trace file for Console application.
Oracle Management Service log file (emoms_pbs.log) The Management Service saves information to this log file for background modules such as the loader, job system, event system, notification system, and so on. This file contains messages logged at ERROR or WARN levels.
Oracle Management Service trace file (emoms_pbs.trc) This trace file provides additional logging for the background modules such as the loader, job system, event system, notification system, and so on when DEBUG or INFO level logging is enabled for these modules. This file can provide Support personnel with even more information about actions these modules were performing when a particular problem occurred.
Enterprise Manager Control log file (emctl.log) The information is saved to emctl.log file, when you run the Enterprise Manager Control commands. For more information about emctl.log file, see chapter Starting and Stopping Enterprise Manager Components.
Enterprise Manager Control message file (emctl.msg) This file is created by the HealthMonitor thread of the OMS when it restarts the OMS because of a critical error. This file is used for troubleshooting the OMS restart problem. It provides information such as the exact time when the OMS is restarted and which module has caused the crash.

  • OMS service does not start?

I installed the oracel 8i 8.1.6 and enterprise manager on XP professional pentium 4 it installed ok. then I installed the oracle 9i DS suite downloaded form oracle site, I created a reposatory to work with designer but it didn't worked and i couldn't locate the reason why?
so i deinstalled the entire designer 9i DS suite and oralce 8i as well, but some reason deinstaller didn't removed the oracle management service and my first database startup service.
Now when i reinstalled the oracle 8i i am still not able to start oracle management service and its give me following message

CAN ANYBODY HELP IN SORTING IT OUT, PLEASE.

Oracle Management Server is not functioning because of the following reason:
A recent plug-in upgrade operation has failed. Follow these steps to recover:
    1. Restore/recover the repository database (For example from a backup)
    2. Start the Management server using 'emctl start oms' command. Oracle Management Server cannot be started without recovering the repository database.
Execute 'emctl status oms -details' to get further information about this failure. After identifying and fixing the issues reported in log files you can retry plug-in upgrade.
For more details, Refer to 'Plug-in Deployment' section in the Enterprise Manager Advanced Configuration Guide.

  • Migrate OMS 11g to new server.

    Hi,
We want to take export of 11g Grid control repository and put it into a new 11g database.
And then install new 11g OMS pointing to this new database.
Will this configuration work smoothly ?
    Thanks,

If you're doing this to move hardware, adding the OMS and using the standby database is the best option that i see. you simply failover to the standby database, and remove the old oms out of the environment. If you're simply trying to create a test environment, i would recommend a new install with it's own targets/agents.
What I would recommend is go one of two routes:
    1. start clean with a new db and new install, apply all patches, create roles/jobs/users/templates, etc, then migrate the agents over. metric history will not be available, but the configuration will be clean.
    2. if you really want to duplicate the environment, you could do roughly the following however there are some downsides here:
    a. add new oms to existing env
    b. create a standby of the db
    c. stop em, break standby and activate the copy
    d. drop the new oms, update the configuration to point to the new repository, restart
    e. drop old targets/agents in the new oms
--> problems i see with the above: can cause communication issues w/ the existing agents, if you try to move the agents over to the new system, they will have conflicts because the targets basically exist already. they will be out of sync and all will have to be resynchronized or reinstalled - no telling which.

  • Having problems implementing OMS

Please be patient with me as I am new to Oracle,
I have not been able to configure and run OMS even though I
have followed the instructions I have found in several
locations including the OMS Configuration Guide and the Oracle
    By Example Series.
I have tried running 9i Database in Windows XP Pro, Windows
2000 Pro, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, and now Windows .NET
Enterprise Server all with the same results. I have even tried
    8i with the same results.
I have created a database specifically for OMS. I have run the
OEM Configuration Assistant to create my repository in that
database. I have made sure that the Database service is
running and the Database is open. I have made sure that the
Intelligent Agent service is running. I have configured a
    static IP address.
The problem is that the OMS Service will not start. I don't
know if it is because OMS is not configured correctly, not
installed correctly, or is incompatible with my software or
    hardware.
If anyone could point out what I have overlooked, or could
point me in the direction of a "baby-steps" kind of "how-to"
for implementing OMS, or tell me I am just plain ignorant, I
    would greatly appreciate it.
    Thanks and Merry Christmas,
    Dwayne Croteau

After a couple of months and about 20 reinstallations I figured
    it out.
When I installed Oracle 9i for the first time I tried to
install into Program Files\Oracle\Ora90 but the installer
complained that Oracle couldn't be installed into a location
that had a space in the path. So I substituted the DOS
compatible path for that directory Progra~1\Oracle\Ora90. OMS
started without a problem after I installed Oracle into a
directory without a space in it's name.
    Woo-Hoo!

After that I can not start my OMS.
Rollbacking  with opatchauto rollback -id xxxx  doesnt work. I had to rollback it with opatch rollback -id xxxx. After that I'm able to start the OMS.
By execution off some steps I also get an error:

Is there someone else, having the same problem...
    What could be the solution?

Hi, in the meantime i have updated my db version to 11.2.0.4.
    Now I have this:
    [oracle@oemcc12 OPatch]$ ./opatch version
    OPatch Version: 11.1.0.10.2
    [oracle@oemcc12 OPatch]$ ./opatch lsinv
    OPatch Version : 11.1.0.10.2
      OUI  Version : 11.2.0.4.0
The OPatch version is not applicable for current OUI version.
Since OUI Version starts with 11.2, Please go to 'My Oracle Support' and get right OPatch 11.2.*.*.* based on patch 6880880, release version 11.2.0.0.0 and appropriate platform.
    OPatch succeeded.
After installing the latest version of Opatch I can not use the opatchauto option:

    2 Prerequisites
Ensure that you have the latest version of OPatch 11.1 on all OMS instance platform homes. (this should be updated)
autopatching with this versions of Opatch(11.1) and OUI(11.2.0.4) is not possible. Is there any other way to this? Do I also need to update the Opatch to 11.2?
In that case it's only possible to patch with "usual" opatch command.
To be honest, I'm not willing to experiment, since last time i lost a lot of time trying to figure this out, specially when I had a problem, that my oms can't start after patching.
Uploading the log file is not relevant now, because I'm now using different OUI and DB Version.
    Regards!

  • Same O_H for OMS and DB10g - Patch installation problem

    Hello,
I already installed the PatchSet from 10.1.0.5, and my OPatch version is 10.2.0..what this is asking me is for the OracleHome form the OMS, I have 2 OracleHomes...
    ORACLE_HOMES=c:\oraclehomes\db10g (DB)
    ORACLE_HOMES=c:\oraclehomes\oms10g (OMS)
this Patch is looking for the rsf.rdbms_rsd component that supposed to read from DB, but how can I point the patch to 2 places that have the same O_H???
    Please I need some help.
    Thanks.

The environment variable is ORACLE_HOME (singular).
It is best practice to set up different environment variables for:
    OMR_HOME
    OMS_HOME
    and
    OMA_HOME

  • OMS login problem

    Hi,
i had configured Oracle Management Server on my system. When ever i am trying to login to the OMS i am getting the following error
"VTK:1000. Unable to connect to the management server 'server1'. Please verify that u have entered the correct host name and the status of the OMS".
When i check for the host name in tns name file it is showing only one host name. Now how will i login to OMS. And if by any chance i have forgotten to remember the host name how will i be able to login to OMS? Is there anyway to find out the host name for OMS and is it possible to reconfigure the OMS, without the installation CD?
    Thanks
    Swadhin

    Swadhin
The Host name you are looking for is the name of the Computer you installed the OMS.
For instance, if it is on your local PC, then the Host name is your Computer name. If it is on a remote server and you are trying to access it from your local PC, then provide the name of that remote server.
Remember to add the domain name of the server is it is being resolved. e.g The server name can be
    myserver01 or myserver01.mycompany.co.uk or myserver_ip_address

  • Problems in OMS

how to connect the OMS(Oracle management Server)
    i am using oracle 9i
when i try to connect the OMS, the oracle ask the following thing
    Administrator:
    passward:
    management server:
tell the correct ways to connect the oms, my host name is localhost
    senthil

    Thanks for the reply.
I am running a pair of servers on Suse 9.3 Pro , Kernel 2.6.11.4-20a. Each has 3Gb Ram, 200Gb internal storage and 2x250Gb Ext Firewire drives. They quite happily run other things such 10gRAC on firewire, 10g R2, 10gAS and various other 9i/10g database with Dataguard (not necessarily all at the same time though - resources get a little stretched!). It was, until last week also happy running Grid R1.
I have tried most install options, including upgrading the R1 GRID. After deinstalling this, I have tried using the existing repository database (from GRID R1) and using a new database. They all end up with the same error as above. The agent only install will however succeed OK.
I have searched high and low for more details on the log4j and "No Appenders" errors including on ML, but most seem to be concentrated on using log4j in your own OC4J apps - something I know little about.
    Thanks again
