On iMac 2011 stopped working audio output.
Is it possible to transmit a signal through the audio input?

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.
1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
2. Run Software Update and make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
4. If you've installed a software equalizer called "Boom" or anything similar, update or delete it and restart.
5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select the Output tab. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them. Move the Volume sliders all the way to the right.
7. If a red light is coming from the audio-out port, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
11. Reset the NVRAM.
12. Reset the SMC.
13. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
14. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

  • Dictation on my new iMac has stopped working on both the internal

Dictation on my new iMac has stopped working on both the internal & external microphones. Any suggestions?

Does the onscreen microphone come up but it doesn't convert speech to text? Or does the onscreen microphone not appear at all?
In System Preferences > Dictation & Speech > Dictation, is the microphone set to "Automatic"? You might try setting it to "Internal microphone" to see if it works.
Have you tried restarting the iMac?

That panic was not caused by third-party software. If the problem is recurrent, the possibilities are:
A stale or corrupt kernel cache
    A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
    Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation (after erasing the startup volume) may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place, without erasing.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model. Memory that is either slower or faster than specified may be incompatible.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least  two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Bluetooth on imac suddenly stopped working

To start, thank you for reading this question with the intent to help.  My imac LionOSX 10.7.5 .  Does anyone have experience or knowledge about how the bluetooth to a computer can suddenly stop working.  It happened at the same time that the computer start up slowed way down (Just took 4 minutes...i timed it so I could know for sure).  It used to start up in about 30 seconds or less. (The computer itself seems to work as fast as normal once the start process has finished.
At first, I thought there was something wrong with my keyboard and mouse, but couldn't even log in to access the system preferences, as both were not working.  So I grabbed an old keyboard and mouse from my Windows desktop, plugged them in and was able to log in.  That is when I noticed that the bluetooth icon in the menu at the top right of the screen showed a line through the bluetooth icon and when I click on it, it says "bluetooth unavailable.  When I click on the "About this Mac"/more info and look under bluetooth, it says "no information found".  Also, the mouse I plugged in stopped working the next day until i plugged it into a different USB port.
My fear is that I accidentally downloaded some kind of malware that is eating up different functionalities on my computer.  I did use a web-service to download a youtube video on neck exercises (how stupid of me...could have simply bookmarked it and pulled it up just as easily)
If you can help, I would be oh, so grateful.  I know my way around computers in the most basic sense, but don't understand much about the how's, why's, how-to's of computer technology.
    Thanks.  Your friend, Patti P

Sorry I haven't gotten back with those of you sooner about your suggestions and how they have been working. Tried one day, but the site was down due to maintenance.
I have been trying all the wonderful suggestions people have given, but so far with no luck.  It is absolutely clear that the problem is with the internal bluetooth and not with the keyboard or mouse.  I bought an external bluetooth usb adaptor, and now my bluetooth devices are usable again, but the internal bluetooth is still unavailable. Thanks for letting me know that the long wait at startup was more than likely due to the system searching for the bluetooth, very comforting.
In one article I read, the person recommended trashing the plist file, com.apple.bluetooth.plist, but I couldn't find a file like this in the library.  However, I did find a file named 'com.apple.Bluetooth.Audio.plist' which was modified on June 12, which is the same time the bluetooth stopped working. I don't know what to do with this file, since I really know nothing about how computers work, code, etc., etc.  I just really enjoy the finished product, so to speak.  But here is what I found when I opened the plist file.
    Here is the first entry:
Root: previous input UID    Dictionary: string   Value: AppleHDAEngingInput:18,0,1,0:1
When I clicked on and opted to copy, this is what pasted when I pasted it: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <string>AppleHDAEngineInput:1B,0,1,0:1</string>
    </plist>
    There is a 2nd entry:
Key/Root: previous output UID   Type/Dictionary: string  Value: AppleHDAEngineOutput: 18,0,1,2:0
When I copied and pasted this string (or whatever it is called…it's all greek (or perhaps I should say geek) to me, here's what pasted:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <string>AppleHDAEngineOutput:1B,0,1,2:0</string>
    </plist>
I also found two files that were logs of events that occurred on the 12th and 13th.  I have copied and pasted this info and put it into two text docs, which if I can figure out how, I will attach in case someone is able to look at code and figure out what it means.  That is way beyond me (and I envy those who can read this foreign language)
In addition, there is a folder named 'com.apple.BluetoothFileExchange.savedState' which was created on June 12th also.  It has 2 documents, one named 'data.data' and another named 'windows.plist'  I took a screenshot of the plist file which i hope I can include somehow in this post.
There is a 2nd folder created June 23 named com.apple.BluetoothSetupAssistant.savedState that has a data.data file and another windows.plist
These are the only files/folders that came up when searching the library under the key word bluetooth.
Thanks to everyone who was so willing to help.  While I wasn't able to fix the problem, I learned lots of good stuff, like how to find my library, etc. so just know your efforts to help were not in vain.
    Your (grateful) friend, Patti P

  • IMac SuperDrive stopped working with Mountain Lion 10.8.2

HELP! My IMac was patched last yesterday and the SuperDrive has stopped working. The drive is empty but I cannot insert a CD into it.
Should I have to await another patch from Apple? Can someone recommend another solution I can use today?

@BDAqua, Thank you for taking the time to respond.
When I insert a disc into the drive, the drive does not load it. Until yesterday, before the latest patch was applied, the drive used to sense that a disc was being inserted, it would automatically draw it in and load it.
Brian at Apple Support led me through the PRAM reset and also a filesystem check but neither of them resolved the issue. I guess I am now faced with two possible options
    a) reinstall Mountain Lion from scratch (reminds me of the days when I was using Windows, never expected to get into a similar situation with a Mac!), or
    b) there is a hardware failure, coincident with the patches applied yesterday
    Are there any other options?
    Thanks

  • My Imac 17" stopped working, repair says Motherboard? Help!

My trusty 17' Intel Imac stopped working, repair shops says its the motherboard and can not be repaired.  Any suggestions? Help!
    Thank you  - Jeff

Time for a new iMac. Even if you could find another shop that would repair it, it wouldn't be worth putting a lot of money in. Better use of the money to put towards a new or refurb.

Has anybody an Idea, what happens and if this issue can be resolved?
    kind regards,
    André

Use another audio output device, is the way I see it. I don't think this issue will be addressed, there simply aren't enough of us to warrant any time spent on a fix. I'm going to start looking at other USB D/A converters, and just run their analog output to one of the analog ins on my Yamaha. Or scrap the yamaha altogether for something with a little more headroom and cleaner PA stage -- love my AP-U70 as I may, it was always a bit rough around the edges, and started clipping -- even soft clipping -- way too soon. My biggest concern is how I was under the impression that as long as USB audio worked, my Yamaha would work, since I thought USB audio was a common platform that all devices played nice with. If that's the case, how many more smaller-user-base USB devices are being dropped from the "friendly" list during OS updates? Will I plug an older digital camera in one day to find that it is no longer supported? Or my Harmony remote? What next?

  • My FaceTime on my iMac has stopped working but it still works on my ipad whats wrong

My facetime on my imac has suddenly stopped working and will not accept my password, it still works on my ipad what is wrong

Either the physical drive or the enclosure electronics has failed. The light you are seeing is powered by the USB connection, the power, electricity, all USB ports put out. That doesn't mean the actual physical hard drive or the USB to SATA bus electronics are working properly. If it doesn't show in Disk Utility then it is DEAD.
Most of the time it is the enclosures electronics that fail. Removing the physical drive from the enclosure and put it in another enclosure or using a SATA to USB adapter, one that has it's own AC power supply, might allow you to get the files off the drive.

  • Microsoft Outlook 2011 Stopped Working

Not sure if this is the right place to be posting this, but I don't know where to post it and really need some help.
Microsoft Outlook 2011 just stopped working, other Office apps run just fine. When clicking Outlook to launch, it bounces 2 - 3 times and just stops launching without an error msg.
I've tried launching it under another user acct and it opens fine.
Tried creating a new Office Identity under the user acct where it doesn't launch, and that didn't fix the problem. Tried rebuilding identity, tried removing preferences from User/Library/Preference/Microsoft.
    Any ideas? Thank you!

I got Outlook to launch by completely deleting my "Identity" and creating a new one. Is there any way to get it to actually repair the old Identity or am I now going to lose everything?
Unless you have a backup of the identity you deleted, you've already lost everything. That's where all of your contacts and emails are stored.
If you still have the old identity, put it on the desktop and try doing an import into the new identity you created.
In answer to the general complaints that "it doesn't work":
Any program can have issues from computer to computer. Various things can cause issues that shouldn't, or wouldn't otherwise exist. I'm running the latest version of Office 2011 and have absolutely no issues with it. And haven't from the day it was released.

  • Imac sound stopped working

My imac sound has stopped working after plugging in and removing headphones.  Sound works fine with headphones but light still on in headphone jack even whern headphones removed.
This happened once before and I jiggled the head phone jack and it worked. Not working this time
    Help

If the micro switch inside the headphone jack is stuck for good this time, then their may not be much that you can do except take it in for repair.
I might try working it with some different 3.5mm jacks, in hopes of unsticking it and then use a USB Griffin iMic or similar device from now on.

  • Printing from Outlook 2011 stopped working

I am helping a friend who uses Microsoft Office 2011 on an iMac running 10.7.2. He is suddenly unable to print from Outlook. Choosing Print... from the File menu or clicking a print button produces no result at all - the normal print dialogue box does not appear. Previously he could print without a problem. He has no problem printing from Word in Office 2011.
We have updated Office to 14.1.4 through Microsoft Update. We have worked through the advice in the Microsoft support document 2409305 - backing up Outlook identities, and removing Oulook Preferences as advised there. The error remains. We then created a new identity and found we could print from that. So we followed the Microsoft advice to rebuild the Outlook identity database. We still cannot print from Outlook.
    Advice greatly appreciated!
    Andrew Spackman

    Thanks everyone!
The reason we did not import the mail, contacts, etc from the old identity to the new identity, as suggested by Templeton Peck, is that we were following step by step a Microsoft troubleshooting document, in which creating the new identity was a testing step, which was then followed by different advice on what to do depending on the result. Importing the mail etc was not one of the recommendations.
Now that may well be a good move. But while I have been using Macs and email systems since 1985 I don't have any experience of Outlook. (I do have some experience of Entourage - as previously used by another friend - and there rebuilding the database seemed to be a regular activity.)
As there is no Exchange involved in my friend's use of email, I am inclined to take what would be the easiest route for me (and, I hope, entirely satisfactory for my friend!) which is a move to Apple Mail (and iCal and Address Book of course). That's the setup I currently use. Obviously if Exchange were involved I wouldn't let up on the Outlook problem, but it looks as though that would require professional help.
    Thnaks again!

  • Microsoft Outlook 2011 Stopped Working (mtn lion)

Like others with earlier versions of OS X, it just stopped.  I deleted about 2500 'sent' emails and Outlook was 'permanently' deleting them when it registered an error and shut down Outlook (several times in a row) without having deleted the messages.  Now, when I click on the Dock icon, it bounces 2 or 3 times (if I'm lucky), brings up the Outlook banner (showing my name, etc) then goes no further.  I have looked at the earlier posts, and sadly, don't understand the posted remedies.  Never had an issue like this before - have been runnin Outlook 2011 since 2011, on OS X 10.6, 10.7, and for the past months, 10.8 - and now this.
Have tried reinstalling Outlook, but it still reacts the same way to an attempted start.
I need my 5 years of email history back, so changing settings/identities won't do it.

Your Outlook database is damaged. If possible, revert to a backed up version. You will be missing any emails received or sent since the backup was made. To do that, open your user account and go to the Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office 2011 Identities/ folder. Replace the Main Identity folder and .plist files from the ones in your backup.
If you have no backup, you need to try and repair the database. Hold down the Option key and launch Outlook. Instead of the email client, you will get the Microsoft Database Utility. If you have only one email account, Main Identity will be the only one listed and highlighted. Click the Rebuild button.
A backup will automatically be created before it attempts a rebuild so you can at least go back to that and try again if it doesn't work. Once the rebuild is done, quit the utility and launch Outlook normally. Examine the rebuilt database closely to make sure important info hasn't been lost.

  • Home Server 2011 Stopped Working

Hey there. I work with a windows Home Server 2011 and recently it wasn't accessing a certain report that I need. I restarted it to see if that would fix it. When it restarted, it went through the Windows loading screen, then went to a black screen. I could
not get it to boot into safe mode. After about 10 minutes of nothing, I hard reboot it. I did this process 2 or 3 more times to no avail. Now the server will not even power on. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions to troubleshoot this?

    Hi amazingbass,
As you mentioned the server not even power on, it mostly is some hardware may have issue, please contect your hardware vendor for the first step troubleshooting. Bas on my experience and from your description the server went black screen and can not complete
startup it some times caused by the disk corrupt, you can focuse this issue first.
    Best regards.

One of the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090 is
If your built-in iSight camera is still not behaving correctly after trying all these steps, you may need to contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service.
What service did the service people tell you was still needed to get your iMac working correctly and why did you not do that?

You'll have to navigate within the installer window. If you can't get the tray open hold down the bouse button and turn it off and back on to open the tray. Tom
