On list view in folders, how do I click drag second group of files?

Back in Snow Leopard and all previous systems, I was able to on list view in a folder be able to click and drag a set of files to select them, then by pressing command again, click drag on a second group of files I would like to select together and so forth. This was handy as I can select really quick on list view folders and files which I need. Obviously the files are listed alphabetically and I don't need to select them all, only groups of files eg. files which are all pdfs that are randomly spread out based on names, or mp3s which I want to move but not move the folders that are in the same folder. You get my drift.
Now on Lion, I can only click drag first group of files, and then on second selection by pressing command, I cannot drag anymore files except for the first click of the file I select.
Is this going to be like this for Lion or did Apple leave this out accidently? Is there a setting I can set back to previous style of group click/drag selection?
This is a bit annoying as I would like to quickly group select a could of groups in a folder QUICKLY to drag to other folders or to simply trash them all in one go. Now I have to stop and start and it slows down my productivity when I have to clean my files on my computer.
Thanks for your help.

I have the same problem.
I've made another post...
Hoping this is a Bug and not a new feature...

  • List view GroupBy pagination does not work for the second group?

    Hi,
I have defined view for list with grouping by 2 fields. I noticed the paging works only for the first grouping, for the second field there are always all items on the page. How could I configure it to provide paging also for the second level of grouping?
If it is possible to have paging for only one group level, I would like to change it for the second 2 (as there are only like 15 groups for the first level but there could be hundreds for the second one).
    Thanks!

  • How can I get the second group and report totals in Matrix report?

    Hi,
I have created a matrix report with 2 break Groups.
Iam getting columns totals for the first group, but not for the second group and the report totals.
How can I get the second group and report totals for each month?
    Thanks.
    Ram.

    Hi Ram,
If you want a total at any group-level, go to the particular group in the data model, insert a summary column in the group, and select
Reset At > appropriate Group Name
For report level summaries, you must create the summary column outside of all groups.

  • Changing all folders to List view in Finder: How to?

I'm trying to accomplish what I assumed would be a simple task...
I want the view of every folder, when opened in the Finder, to be List view. All new folders... all the existing folders... everything.
I want it to forget all about any current settings or other defaults, and force everything into List view.
Is this possible? I'm perfectly willing to dive into the Terminal to delete .DS_Store files or perform whatever brutality needs to occur.
    Thanks!
Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Derek,
Ah, I think I see your problem now. Actually, you are dreaming of the one thing that is, in fact, difficult. You see, every new folder is created (and will always be created, no matter what we do) with Icon View set as the default. This can be overidden by selecting "Always open in Column View," which doesn't necessarily force every window to open that way, but goes a long way towards achieving that end (over time, it works).
Forcing every window into list view is a little more difficult. It is simple enough to make all of your own folders show this view, as only a single "tease" should be necessary for a folder that you own (you can just get in the habit of making this change each time a new folder is created, which normally isn't that often for most of us). Any changes we make to our own folders should "stick" as a matter of course.
The problem is getting all of the root-owned folders to which we navigate frequently to do the same. You probably went a long way toward achieving that end by simply deleting all of the .DS_Store files. The .DS_Store file for a particular folder will be owned by the first user to navigate that folder in the Finder. If that user is you, you will own the file, not root. So, having deleted those files, you gave yourself the opportunity to "assume control" of those directories. Keep in mind that if the folder is owned by root, with a group ownership of "admin," you must be an admin user to be able to write a .DS_Store file to that directory. I assume that you are using an admin account(??).
At this point, I would suggest that you just start navigating your file system and changing directories. If you did not do so as root after having deleted the .DS_Store files, you should be able to make the necessary changes as yourself. Provided you have assumed control of the .DS_Store files, you should only have to make changes once.
Of course, you will still have to click that little button one time for each new folder you create. Apple has gone a long way toward making the interface as flexible as possible (nobody else does it as well, mind you), but as they say, "you can't make everybody happy all of the time." It is an ideal only to be strived for, never to be reached.

  • List view for folders on a sparse image disk

I have set up a sparse image on an external disk.  I cannot get the sparse image disk folders to default to "List View".  It always opens as "Icons" and I have to click on list view everytime.  Any ideas?

Go to the Preferences under the small box at the upper-left:
On the General pane, check the box to "Show list views for all media".

  • Can I group list view by folders then files (like in Windows)

I'm brand new to Mac (was a Windows user since 1993) and so now I'm starting over as a NOOB!
One thing that's driving me crazy is that I am used to viewing my list of files and folders with the folders grouped together alphabetically (or chronologically) and then the files grouped together alpha or chrono.
Can this be done in Mac; if so, how? I've been searching for an answer and have not found it.
    Thanks!

    welcome to Discussions!
you can sort files by type by opening a finder window and clicking View>Show View Options, clicking show "Kind", and clicking on it's icon in the right of the finder window. Items will be sorted alphabetically by kind, and within each kind alphabetically by name.
    Good luck!

  • Using Lab view ver 6,How can I read a cell of excel file right after I write to it

How can I read a specif cell of an Excel file using Labview VI.

    Hi,
Attached is a LV6.1 VI which will read a cell.
It will be looking for a sub VI found in the example C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW\examples\comm\ExcelExamples.llb.
The returned value is a string value but there is no reason why it couldn't be a number. Just connect a numeric to the type connector of the Variant to Data function.
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I quickly rename a group of files (not batch)

I've seen answers to the "batch" renaming.  My situation is a little different.
I want to change the names of a bunch of files, but there is no pattern to the changes.  It's somewhat cumbersome right now to click on each item, then wait a second, then click on it again to get the name to be editable and then to click on the next one and follow the same process.
I was hoping there would be a way to select a bunch of them and rather than having to click and wait, I could just tab my way through the names, or something quicker than what I'm doing.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hey aykano,
This feature is not native to OS X. You will have to get a third party app like NameChanger or make an automator workflow to automate the process.
    Hope that helps!

  • How to change to Icon View for some folders but and List View for the rest

I've had a bear of a time with View options in my folders. I'd like some folders to be in Icon view and other to be in List view. For what ever reason if I change the view option of one folder it changes the view option of EVERY folder. What can I do to make this happen?

I was about to ask the same. I'd like to use icon view normally, but list view for folders containing lots of text documents. It looks like the solution is using View > Show View Options, change the folder to the view you want, and then tick the box at the top fo the dialogue for "Always open in __ view".

  • Finder folders stay open in list view

I am having a problem with the Finder. When looking at folders in list view, certain folders stay open every time I look at a certain directory. If I close the folders and re-open the surrounding folder, the triangles are back down again! These are folders I had open a week ago and I don't need them open any more. It is very frustrating to open a folder, and have five open folders within it that I don't need open! I have to close them several times a day!
How do I make it so that my Finder rembers that those should be closed? I am not sharing files or folders with any other computer or user.
I had this problem on my laptop and I thought that maybe my external HD had some indexing issues. But now it is happening on my brand new imac with folders in the hard drive.

Maybe some of the invisible .DS_Store files in your folders are corrupt.
Launch your Terminal and paste the blue code below into it.
Press Return and type in your password - press Return again and wait for the word 'done.' to appear.
    Then quit the Terminal.
sudo find / -name \.DS_Store -exec rm -fP {} \;;echo done.
Next, relaunch the Finder - press Command Option - click and hold down the Finder in your Dock and select Relaunch.
    Good luck,
    Tom

  • HELP - computer doesn't keep icons in list view, etc from one day to next

Every day when I turn on my MAC (at work), the settings from the previous day are gone. I prefer my files/folders to be in "list" view, but they are always in large icon view and scattered all over the window. Each day I have to change every folder I open to list view manually. How to I get my computer to remember my settings so that I don't have to change it each day? our "expert" computer guy here at work has no clue, just saying it should automatically remember it, but it won't. Other areas where the same type of thing is occuring: I use InDesign everyday and always want my documents in inches. However, it usually defaults back to picas so when i open a new doc each day, i have to go in and change the settings back to inches. Also, any folders I click on open up a window so large it runs from the top to off the bottom of my screen. i have to go to to Window>Zoom Window so it gets back on the screen where I can size it down. All these things, although minor, are just such a hassle to have to do every single day. any advice is very welcome!! I am by no means advanced on a MAC, so please break things down for me as best you can.

First: Send Apple a Feedback. This has been an issue since the first days of X and is still not corrected in Tiger, from the posts I see there. Apple needs to know it matters to you. Click on "Discussions" at the top of this page and then look at the bottom left of the list of forums that comes up
Second: You did send that Feedback, didn't you. In the same corner is the link to the Users' Tips Library. In it—you'll have to do a search—is the tip from Scott Radloff "Making Finder Views Persistant" [title may not be exact] that you want.
Briefly, Apple's overlay of X onto UNIX broke down here. The 'ownership' of the problem windows belongs to one of those greyed out users like "eppp" and "mysql" that you see under your shortname when you look at Details in a Get Info… window on a file. UNIX needs them, so you need them, but you don't need to defer to their idea of what a perfect window looks like. Not if you're willing to become "root" the superuser and tell them how-to. That's Scott's tip, and do be warned: Rootness is all-powerful, and you must use those powers only for good and immediately renounce them when your task is done.
Now, what were you going to do first? Good luck.

  • Share to open in List View on Client

Currently I'm running Snow Leopard Server 10.6.8.  Clients home folders are stored on an external drive and they also connect to a shared volume.
When the open the shared volume it opens in list view everytime.  How do I get the volume to mount in list view?

Hi Meherally. Thanks for the tip, but my problem isn't related to the process for setting default viewing options. Perhaps some clarification will help.
"Next, select 'view options' from 'view' menu. As you say, the window will have "always show in icon view" but note if the box next to is checked or unchecked. If checked, uncheck it."
This box is always unchecked. The problem is that when I change views in the finder window (from icon, to list or coverflow, or whatever, the "view options"menu always says "always open in icon view". It does not change according to whatever view I am using. this only happens in iDisk. All other folders and disks open just the way I have set them.
In my office I have an iMac G5 running Leopard that works perfectly (in other words, I can set my iDisk view default to always open in whatever view I please), but my new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard appears to have a bug that prevents this option with iDisk only. The checkbox always says "Always open in icon view" no matter what view I switch to in the finder window. As mentioned above, the iDisk is the only problem. It always opens in icon view and the checkbox does not change with the current window view. All other folders and disks on the MacBook open jsut the way I want. But I'm getting irritated with iDiks always opening in icon view.
    Thanks!
I've not come across anyone else reporting this problem on any other forum.

  • Drag and Drop in List View

When in the List view in Finder, I would like to drag and drop a folder in Terminal to cd to that path. However, it does not appear that List view allows dragging and dropping at all even to copy files within Finder. Is it by design? I like List view because it allows me to see the tree view of folders like in Windows Explorer. Thanks.

Works here. I've never had any issue selecting anything in list view (the only one I ever use in Finder windows) and dragging & dropping into a Terminal window and getting its path. Create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the behavior persists.

  • Grey lines on library list view gone

    hello.
until 3-4 days ago, my itunes was fine. now all the grey lines are gone from every list view, and it's just white background everywhere. I didn't install anything new or messed with any preferences.
I tried reinstalling but nothing happened.
I tried itunes on a new user, and it was fine.
    also, I noticed this:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/349788/Screen%20Shot%202011-11-26%20at%2013.28.40.JPG
when another window is over itunes, the grey lines show up on the shadow of that window.
what the **** is going on?
    how can i fix this?
    thanks.

I was also kind of annoyed that they got rid of list view.  You now have to click the magnifying glass at the top and it will give you the list view.  There should be a dedicated button for the list view but hopefully they will change this in a future update.
