HI Emmet,
thanks so much for your posts back. I really appreciate it and yes that does help to know that you could not get it working.
I did have some success, in removing the SSL Authentication checkbox in the smtp server settings - I found that this allowed my friend to be able to send mail from the mail app via his sbcglobal (yahoo) account.
So that did help but of course the messages do not have ssl encryption and I'm not sure how big a deal that is for an individual. He is able to receive mail but unless the SSL authentication box is unchecked, he cannot send.
i hope that helps anyone out there also!
Thanks also for the tip about sparrow - yes I have heard of it and it is very popular, he may end up using that in the end.
Thanks again, much appreciated.

We have iPhotos in a shared folder so both my pertner and I can access the pictures.
Recently, when my partner tries to open some of the more recent pictures, they open briefly, then disappear. This doesn't happen with all of them, and there doesn't seem to be any link between those that do, and those that don't.
When I try to open them, they open with no problem, and remain open until I close them.
Has anyone any solutions, please?
Thanks.A shared folder is not sufficient to share an iPhoto library. When you open the library from your account, the ownership and permissions of library items changes.
The safest way to share a library is to put it onto a separate disk or disk partition with the "Ignore Ownership on this volume" flag set. See this document on how to achieve this:

I dropped my phone yesterday and now can't receive mail. I removed and then replaced the sim card. I've restarted the phone. It says the user name or password is incorrect. I re-entered the correct information (I think) and I've also synced it with my computer. Nothing works. Help!
Delete the email account and re-enter it from scratch.

I have upgraded Safari in my Mac, but the new Safari does not work with my system. So I find myself without any working browser. How can I solve this problem and/or install my previous Safari version?
Reinstall Safari 5.1.10 for OS X 10.6.8: http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1569. Might do the trick.
But, frankly, I don't think that simply reinstalling the old Safari will work because of all the peripheral, under the hood changes that happen when you upgrade from one version of Safari to another. Reinstalling 5.1.10 may be insufficient to turn back the clock. (This is the moment where a Time Machine or another form of full backup would save your bacon.)
While you're getting a copy of Safari 5.1.10, get a copy of Firefox (https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/desktop/), too, so that you have an alternate browser to use as you're sorting matters. -

How can you change the name of a wireless network set up with an airport express
Yes, you can. If you use the current AirPort Express, Apple says that you can connect up to 50 devices. Realistically, make that 25-30 or so before the speed really begins to drop.
Remember that you will have to reset the modem though, before you connect it to the AirPort Express as the modem "remembers" the settings for your computer. -
The horizontal, wavering "line" is disruptive when scrolling. What's causing this. Doesn't happen with other browser and I'd like to stay with Mozilla Firefox, if we can resolve this. Thank you.
hi Liza5, maybe that's an issue with hardware acceleration - please try [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL|updating your graphics driver]] or in case there is no new version available at the moment or this doesn't solve the issue, disable hardware acceleration in the firefox ''menu ≡ > options > advanced > general'' (that setting will take a restart of the browser to take effect).

I am having trouble downloading and updating my apps for my IPad2. I am getting a messahe "Error 1004 try again later". Anyone experienced this?
Hi John
iTunes Support wasn't of any use to me.
I have also been having another problem - with BBC iPlayer and other video streaming not working due to insufficient bandwidth, despite my overall download speed being consistently around 50Gb. This is also affecting AppleTV downloads
I am using Virgin Media as my ISP, and was wondering whether you do as well. This might be the common thread.

This problem occurs intermittently, usually for several days, then fixes itself for several days. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox, but it doesn't seem to make any difference. This has been happening for quite a while, in both the newest release and older versions. I've asked the people at Yahoo, but they have no idea what is happening.

I am connected to the internet through a hospital network and have airport express which works fine with another hp pc and a mac. It did work with the hp with vista until last week and now airport doesn't come up on list of wireless devices. I have reinstalled it from the disk but still no joy and I cannot connect to the internet through that computer. Please help....it's driving me mad and the network is saying connected but an X for internet! This is my 12 year old's pc which I am in a pickle with. By the way....I am an uncomplicated soul with no real knowledge of technical only turn on and off!!!
Thank YOU!!!
Message was edited by: liverpoolgirlFrom your previous post, it sounds like at one point you are getting the pop up that says "installing device driver software," correct?
If you are not getting this pop up in the lower right hand corner of you screen then I need you to:
1. Try a different USB port on your computer. Some computer USB ports are "touchy" and if you try a different one it will work. It all depends on the make of the computer.
2. Try a different USB cable. You might have a bad USB cable. Also, be sure that the USB cable isn't longer than 3ft long.
3. Go into your device manager and see what printers have been installed. They should be listed under "printers" or "other devices" You might have to go to view and check show hidden devices to see these on your computer. If there is a yellow triangle or question mark on this device then you have a conflict with your computer. This is something in your computer causing this and not the software download.
Keep me posted.

Can you solve the Real Player mystery???
Hi Guys,
Was very pleased to hear of the Universal Binary release this morning as I access a lot of content on the BBC website. After downloading and installing I was shocked to see that I was receiving the following error when trying to listen to Radio Five Live.
The page “BBC Radio Player” has content of MIME type “application/x-mplayer2”. Because you don’t have a plug-in installed for this MIME type, this content can’t be displayed.
Bizarrely, although displaying this message the radio show loaded in the background and started to play!? I tried it on some other BBC stations and it got even more curious.
Radio 1-4 load without a problem (no MIME warning, audio OK)
Radio 5-onwards(6,7,Asian Network etc) - radio plays but with MIME warning
Could someone please go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/ and see if they are experiencing the same odd behaviour? I could at least try and understand it if all the stations were acting the same way but I'm completetly baffled.
Anyone have any ideas/fixes?
Cheers
T
iMac 20" 2GB RAM Mac OS X (10.4.4)I had the same experience last evening when testing the new UB version on the BBC. It happened for me on Stations 4 & 5. And yet inspite of the warning the broadcast started coming through AOK.
I think it may have more to do with the sniffers and feelers of the website, than with the iMac, Safari or Realplayer!
However, I just went back to re-test the situation and I didn't get the warnings, the Radio Player just opened and made the connection and started broadcasting the program!! -
Please check http://www.syus.com for an example. There is a Flash movie underneath the main navigation. The main navigation has a jQuery mouse event, and when you mouse over a button in the main navigation, the Flash movie re-starts. I can confirm that this happens not only on Flash swf files, but on standard <object> YouTube embeds.
Ok, I promise this is my last post without your help. I did some more troubleshooting and it only seems to happen when jQuery appends elements to the body that were previously invisible. In other words, I can simply change the css in jQuery from using element.css('display','inline'), but if I try to use something like slideDown or other jQuery tooltip functions that append and/or remove elements or style definitions it causes the "object restart" bug.
It is impossible for any developer to eliminate this bug without changing the actual source of jQuery, which I can't do. My only other option is not to use sophisticated show/hide jQuery elements like drop-down menus and tooltips on the same page as an embedded object, but I don't want to do this since Safari, Chrome and even IE (dear God) users won't have a problem with this. I think this is a major major bug that should be fixed in Firefox 4 as more and more sites will be looking to use the latest jQuery plugins. -
I have used the PrimeVest web site to keep track of my IRA for several years now. For most of that time I have used Internet Explorer and have had no trouble. I have a link to that site pasted onto an Excel spread sheet and I click on that link daily to get my present balance. I have been doing it this way for years and have had no trouble while using Internet Explorer.
I recently installed the Firefox browser on my new laptop and have switched to using it as my default browser. When I click on that link now and enter my account number and password, sometimes it works OK in Firefox and sometimes it gives me a message saying "Your session has timed out. Please Log In Again." I have tried multiple times to re-enter the account number and password but always get the same message. Closing Firefox and reopening it produces the same result. I have even tried shutting the computer completely down and restarting it, but I got the same result. I can not find any pattern or reason to the days when I can use Firefox and the ones when I can not. The only way I have been able to log on to this site on those days is to past the link into Internet Explorer.
I do the same thing with several other financial sites and have not had any trouble with them and Firefox. Thanks for the response.
I attempted to remove cookies, but I can not identify any of the cookies on the list with the PrimeVest web site. No PrimeVest, no PVs, nothing that looks like it came from them.
I have also reported the problem to PrimeVest and their tech did answer. He suggested erasing the browsing history (temporary internet files), which I did with no effect. He also had me check for the correct starting page address, which was OK. He stated that they are aware of a problem and it is on their list. No indication of how far down that list though. His only cure was to use IE for now, which I was already doing. Perhaps he can tell me which cookies to remove. -
Why does iMovie camera only record part of a home movie? It records them well but but there are many parts missing?
no mystery ....
'moving images' are created by projecting frames so fast, the human eye gets tricked, not to notice a slide-show but … a movie.
a TV, esp. the old tube ones, 'write' a frame onto the screen, line by line (a frame is made of pixels, in rows and lines - take a very, very close look of your screen)
the picture on the TV is shown for about a 1/30th of a second, a camera is able to record, letssay for example sake, a 1/60th = only half frame is 'seen'/recorded.
.... it's never a good idea to record projected movies, not from a projection, not from a screen - you should synchronize both devices - which is for normal people like us impossible. -
