One 8i instance and two rman catalogs 8i and 8

Can I have a single 8i instance for RMAN only with two catalogs, one for 8i and one for 8.0?

Robert,
Yes you can use a single database for 2 recovery catalogs. You can create 2 different schemas for each RMAN catalog version and each of those schemas can hold a different version of the RMAN catalog.
The only reason I can think that you would need 2 different catalogs is because you have an 8.1.X target and a 8.0.5 target? If so, make sure to have the RMAN catalog be the latest 8.1.x release.
In general, the rules of RMAN compatibility are as follows:
o The RMAN catalog schema version should be greater than or equal to the catalog database version. See "Note 1: 8.1 or Later Catalog Schemas in 8.0 Catalog Databases".
o The RMAN catalog is backwards compatible with target databases from earlier releases. See "Note 2: 8.1 or Later Catalog Schemas and 8.0 Target Databases".
o The versions of the RMAN executable and the target database should be the same.
Note 1: 8.1 or Later Catalog Schemas in 8.0 Catalog Databases
RMAN cannot create release 8.1 or later catalog schemas in 8.0 catalog databases.
Note 2: 8.1 or Later Catalog Schemas and 8.0 Target Databases
Restore operations for an 8.0.4 or 8.0.5 target with an 8.1 or later catalog schema do not work when both these conditions are met:
The target database is mounted or open
You are connected to a recovery catalog
If any of these conditions is not met, then you can use an 8.1 or later catalog schema with an 8.0.4 or 8.0.5 target database.
Note 3: 8.1.6 Catalog Schema and Pre-8.1.6 RMAN Executable
Using a pre-8.1.6 release of the RMAN executable with recovery catalog schema of release 8.1.6.0 or 8.1.6.1 (newly created by 8.1.6 RMAN executable using the CREATE
CATALOG command) requires the following update at the catalog database:
SQL> UPDATE CONFIG SET VALUE='080004' WHERE NAME='COMPATIBLE';

  • One instance registered in two rman catalogs is possible?

Customer wants that one instance be registered in two different rman catalogs.
    and perform two different backups.
There is a sincronism between control file and Catalog, what could mess it up having two catalogs. On the other hand there is the DBID who identify the database on each catalog.
Can anyone clarify if this is possible or not?

    Lalbuque,
RMAN performs a backup using a "Media Manager Layer" or "MML". There can only be one MML installed at once on a particular ORACLE_HOME and it seems that yours is TSM; you cannot run an RMAN backup to tape without an MML. This is true even if you backup WITHOUT a catalog so adding a second will not help.
There are a number of solutions to this problem. Here are a couple.
Firstly, you could backup your database to the non-TSM tapes without RMAN. You can do this either by shutting the database down first or you could put the database into backup mode for the duration of the backup. The former is simpler but a) requires an outage and b) requires you to be absolutely sure that your shutdown was clean. The latter requires some detailed knowledge of oracle backup concepts but avoids the other problems.
The second solution is to backup your database to disk with RMAN and then to copy the resultant files to tape.
Whatever solution you choose please bear three things in mind:
    1) The purpose of backup is to recover. Make sure you have a documented recovery process and test it.
    2) The use of a second catalog is not required.
    3) Test your ability to recover. Have I said that already :-)

What does RMAN care if RAC is involved or not?
Oracle provides RMAN for backing up and restoring the database. RMAN enables you to back up, copy, restore, and recover datafiles, control files, SPFILEs, and archived redo logs. RMAN is included with the Oracle server and it is installed by default. You can run RMAN from the command line or you can use it from the Backup Manager in Oracle Enterprise Manager. The procedures for using RMAN in RAC environments do not differ substantially from those for Oracle single-instance environments. Refer to the Oracle Backup and Recovery documentation set for more information about single-instance RMAN backup procedures.

  • RMAN Backup using Rman Catalog

    Hi
can we take backup of oracle9i database using oracle10g RMAN Catalog?
    Thanks
    With Regards
    OH

I guess this is related to backward compatibility support principle. Target database's controlfile and RMAN catalog is synchronized and different version may have different structure and feature. When we need to completely restore an Oracle instance from backup, RMAN catalog must be able to support target database, and it may not be possible if RMAN catalog version is lower than target database. I hope I get the message across.
Pls anybody correct me if I am wrong

  • OIM AD reverse password sync from one AD instance to multiple OIM instances

    Hi All,
I have a followind scenario. My client is having multiple offices across the globe. They have OIM installed and configured in each location in each country to manage there local applications. Client also has a Global LDAP which is common across all the offices worldwide.
My requirement is then i need to setup reverse password sync from Global LDAP to all the OIM sysem across the Globe. As per the reverse password sync connector i can only define one OIM system to sync the password.
Can you please suggest me some way to achieve this functionality? Is it possible to install more than one password sync connector and configure them with different OIM systems?
    Thanks

  • Why does Adobe Reader 10.0 opens one more instance of it as a child process ?

    Hi,
I downloaded Adobe Reader 10.0 and observed that it spawns one more instance (same name as parent) which opens a file instead of parent. This seems to be a significant change since last version where there was only one instance.
Can anyone tell me why is the use of opening one more instance and delegating a task of opening a file to it ? Is there any security reason behind it ? Is there any settings by which I can disable this behaviour ?

I have duplicate pictures in "my catalog" that I believe come from two Adobe folders found under "my pictures/adobe/ one is Revel and the other is Photoshop express which preceded revel. Can I delete those two folder without causing a problem with my catalog?

    Thanks for the links, Limnos.
If you are willing to continue helping, here's what I found.
Just to clarify the two iTunes folders I am refering to are:
    username-->Music-->iTunes
    HD-->iTunes
I am presuming each location has a full set of files as outlined in the above links?
Not all the files are in both locations. Most are.
    - The Itunes folder in my home folder does not have itunes library.xml.
    - The Itunes folder in my home folder has a subfolder called Mobile Applications (username-->Music-->iTunes--> Mobile application). The Itunes folder at the HD level also has a Mobile Application folder but it is a subfolder of Itunes Media folder (HD-->iTunes--> iTunes Media-->Mobile applications) and has no files in it.
    - I do not have an iTunes Media in the iTunes folder in my home folder.
    - also the Itunes media folder (HD-->iTunes--> iTunes Media) has subfolders by type (books, movies, itunes u, music etc...) but the iTunes Media-->Music also has some of the same subfolders ( iTunes Media-->Music-->books, iTunes Media-->Music-->Movies, iTunes Media-->Music-->iTunes U). Is this normal repetition?
    You say:
    /itunes/itunes media/ music
but it is important to note what comes before all that.
There is nothing as far as I can tell before that first forward slash. Since the only iTunes Media folder I have is in the iTunes folder that resides at the HD level (HD-->iTunes--> iTunes Media folder) not the iTunes folder in my home folder (username-->Music-->iTunes) , I assume that's the one that holds the music.
Keep iTunes media folder organized and Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library are both checked on
Does that give more clarity into my problem?

  • New RMAN catalog in existing EMREP database - new user and tablespace?

    Hi all,
I am FINALLY getting "with the times" and trying to get my databases to back up with RMAN. I already have a dedicated server that is running Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g Grid Control, so it already has the OMS database on it, called EMREP. I was hoping to just use this database as my RMAN catalog, is that considered good practice or not?
So assuming this practice is considered OK, I know that I need to create a new user (which I'll just call RMAN) in this database. Would it be best to also create a separate tablespace for this user? I have no idea how big I should expect this RMAN schema to get. I'm sure it all depends on the number of databases I'm backing up, but can anyone give me some realistic size expectations that I could start with?
    Any advice/info is greatly appreciated!

I think that the catalog is only applicable if you will have several databases to manage.
If you he will have only one, I dont see necessity to use the catalog, therefore with backups of controlfiles only, you can to execute the tasks of backup/restore/recovery.
But, for catalog creation information, see

Using administrator responsibility, first create 2 instance partitions.
Then using the instances screen, create the 2 instances. Make sure you have setup the db links prior to that.
Then assign appropriate orgs to the 2 instances.
After that, the remaining setups (such as DC, defining plans etc.) should be repeated for instances.

  • Can you have two Apple IDs on one IPAD? One for school and one for home?

Can you have two Apple IDs on one IPAD? One for school and one for home?
If so do you know how to do it?

It depends on what you want to do.
You could, for example, have one AppleID for iCloud backup [and therefore message syncing, notes syncing, etc] and a second one for iTunes [music, iBooks, etc].
But if you are looking for a way to flip everything between different appleIDs, then no.

Is it possible to have your whole family on one apple id or is it better to have each person have there own?
Yes, it is possible. 1 apple ID can be associated with up to 10 devices.
If each has their own does each id have to buy their own music and apps?
    Yes, all purchases are non-transferable.
How does find my iphone work with one apple id or two?
Every device associated with one apple ID through Find my iPhone is tied to that Apple ID; Find my iPhone will work in the same way with up to ten devices associated with one apple ID. You cannot enable Find my iPhone for one device across two apple IDs
I am going to be going off to college soon should I make an itunes id for my self and how will I get all the music from the old id?
If you have authorized a computer with the old apple ID, you can transfer old media purchased through the old to other devices via iTunes. This doesn't mean the media purchases through the old apple ID it transferred to the new account. If you plan to make future purchases and don't wish to share them with others, make your own apple ID.

  • How can I have one "family" Apple ID and two icloud accounts one for me and one for the wife?

MacVirgin!Just got new Air and iMac (iphones on the way). How can I have one Apple ID but two iCloud accounts (one for me and one for my wife)? I have set up one iCloud account and am attempting to share contacts between iMac, iCloud and Air, however iMac and iCloud are not in sync? I must be missing something very simple.

ok. I set up the imac and Air with one user account. this was used to activae iCloud on both machines and I have now se up one iCloud account and managed to share calander and contacts between the two. Ultimately both me and my wife will have an iphone and we wish to share calenders and contacts. We both also use the imac and air on one user account. It looks like I need to set another user account then activate iCloud in my wifes Apple ID
