One artist in my library is listed four times

i have my library sorted by artist, the one where you have a picture for each artist and click it to open all their albums. all of the sudden today one particular artist has four different "buttons", pictures whatever you want to call it. i have tried selectign them all and get info and re entering the name into all songs at once, have tried doing the same thing in sorting, have tried everything i know to do. any help? on and its not copies, like each listing for this artist isnt the same, it just randomly put different songs into different buttons. it even broke up albums on some, like a few songs from one album are in one button, a few songs from that same album are in another and so on...

Generally all you need to do is fill in an appropriate Album Artist. For more details see my article on Grouping Tracks Into Albums, in particular the topic One album, too many covers.

    The Saved Application State folder is where Lion stores all the information required for its resume feature to function as it does. As you are looking for a specific saved game folder it will not be in the Saved Application State folder. This folder was not present in Snow Leopard so wouldn't be present on your backup previous to the Lion install.
    The game saves you're looking for will most likely be located in the Application Support or Preferences folder.
    Hope this helps

  • Multiple Listing for One Artist

    First, click on the link to view a picture:
    http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/bf3a7e5fdb.png
    So why are the Minutemen listed four times in a row when all my Minutemen MP3's are a) ripped from my own CD's, and therefore b) uniformly and tagged?
    I'll go into each and every one of those Minutemen listings, and find the exact same albums and songs in each and every one. Meaning there is not one single instance of a partial album in anywhere. And I know for a fact that I only have one MP3 copy of every Minutemen album on there, because I've had them all on there for a long, long time. Now, if it was something I just downloaded last night and threw on my iPod before checking it to make sure everything was up to snuff, then I wouldn't be here right now.
    You know what the weirdest part is? Today is the first time this has ever happened to me. And I know my co-worker has had this exact same problem. You know what's even weirder? I plugged my iPod into my computer, selected each an every Minutemen song on there (which only ever appear once, btw) and...
    http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/0d63fd0046.png
    ...am told that the artist tag is, in fact, THE EXACT SAME THING FOR EVERY FILE.
    So how does this happen, how do i prevent this in the future, and what are some good Mac-compatible hard drive MP3 players that don't glitch nearly as often as the iPod?
    EDIT: So I went and re-edited the ID3 tags for the files on the iPod itself and, low & behold, the problem still persists. Next step: removing all the songs from my iPod and putting them back on there. I'll keep you posted.

    Now the site won't let me edit my original post yet again, so I'm going to have to "Reply" to my own thread.
    After removing all the Minutemen songs from my iPod, and re-editing all the ID3 tags for the MP3 files on my hard drive, then dumping all back onto my iPod, I'm still having the same problem.

  • A music album is listed multiple times in my library but each listing only has a few songs in it-not the full listing.  How can I combine them into one album and get rid of other duplicate listings?

    Several music albums listed in my IPhone 5 music library are listed multiple times, but each one only has a portion of the songs listed.  How can I combine them to make one album?

    First....Thank you so much for your prompt reply.  I am sorry for not getting back to you regarding your suggestion-I had computer issues that just got resolved.  Also, this is my first foray into online chat rooms so I have a lot to learn to precisely state my issue!  I did as you suggested and all the songs list the same album when I go into each song's "get info".  However, I am not sure how to edit as you suggested. When I downloaded this album originally, for some reason it broke up into several albums each with different songs from the original album.  I am trying to consolidate them back into one album in my library.  I would greatly appreciate further assistance if you can.  Also, I do not use "the cloud" to store any data and would like a good source of info on how to do this.  Thanks so much for your patience!

  • I have ripped all of my Cds into iTune, now I cannot find where some of the artists have been filled, not all the artists are listed, yet others are listed multiple times as they play with other groups. How do I list all one artist under his name? I know

    Sorry this will appear pretty basic stuff.  I have ripped all my Cds into iTunes, but in starting to make playlists it is apparent that some artists are listed multiple times as they appear with different bands, and others do not appear at all.  I have tried searching different categories, compilations etc, and Finder box does not bring them up.
    My questions are:-
    Do I need additional software to manipulate my tunes in iTunes?
    If so what is suggested?
    or if not:-
    How can I re arrange the tunes so that they appear only under one artist?
    How do I make my "lost" artists tunes appear?
    Thanks for any advice.

    I am not really following what the problem is here.  Artists are listed in the Artist field.  I guess you could stick individual artists in a band in a field such as comments, but then you would have to include searching the comments field in your search.  In which fields are these names located?
    How are you making these playlists? Are these smart playlists or are you just dragging tracks to a playlist?
    Are you doing this search with Finder's find or with iTunes' search?
    If I knew exactly what it was you were trying to do I could tell you if you need addditional software.  In reality though there isn't "additional software" for iTunes.  There's Applescript plugins but I don't see how the ones with which I am familiar would have anything to do with searching for artist names.
    How can I re arrange the tunes so that they appear only under one artist?

    Quick answer:  Select all the tracks on the album, File > get info, and either give them all a single "album artist", or check the "compilation" flag (as in https://discussions.apple.com/message/17670085).
    If these are from multiple-CD sets you may also need to enter the appropriate information in the disc number fields.

  • Why are artists in music library being removed from alphabetical list once a track has been played? All artist recently played appear before 'A' in my library.

    Why are artists in music library being removed from alphabetical list once a track has been played? All artist recently played appear before 'A' in my library now rendering the search bar on right of screen useless.

    Also, why would my music play at all when I turn iTunes Match off and delete all tracks off the phone? Home sharing also disabled. It is very odd!

    All songs in my iTunes library are listed twice. I have two copies of my library in two different locations. How do I make iTunes work with one copy of my library?

    That is the way the iphone works.
    You need to copy everything from your backup copy of your computer.

  • How do I sort so that all the songs for a particular album show up under only one album? Example:  Eminem 'Encore'  has multiple artists on the entire track list.

    Example:  Eminem 'Encore'  has multiple artists on the entire track list.  Several songs will just list Eminem as the artist, but a lot will have Eminem, FEATURING...so and so.  Each song that has "FEATURING" shows up as a different album, so if you are not paying attention, and pull all the songs from a particular album over to your ipod, for example, and you don't see that not all the songs are there, you won't get them all to transfer.
    Is there anyway to correct this?

    Each tune gets a file name - that is how iTunes works. iTunes is a data base manager.
    In a PlayList a reference is created that will link to a specific tune.
    You can take the tunes that you do not want listed under a particular album name and change the album name using 'Get Info' for that tune(s) from the iTunes window.

  • Same Artist Lists Multiple Times

    I'm confused on why a random artist will list itself multiple times when others will organize themsevles under one name with a drop menu. All the artist/album/track information is listed correctly but on Itunes and on the Ipod it will list it seperately instead of together. Anyone know how to fix that?

    You need to make sure the artist name is spelt in an identical manner on every track. Even an extra space at the end of the name that you might not notice can make a difference. Try this even if everything looks the same. Sort your iTunes library by artist to bring your tracks together. Click on the first track by your artist, hold down the shift key and click on the last track in the list, this will highlight all in between. Right click on the list and choose Get Info, you get a dialogue box asking if you want to update multiple items, click Yes. If you see the "artist" field is left blank, then there is a discrepancy with that name. Overtype the artist name then click ok and this will ensure the whole selection is identical. Once you've done this connect your iPod, if you are updating automatically it will pick up the changes. If you are updating manually follow the instructions above with the iPod connected and carry out the changes directly on the iPod's song list.
    If the name is not the issue, try this. Highlight all the songs for that artist, right click on them and select "apply sort field/same artist".

  • Albums split due to more than one artist?

    I have discovered that iTunes groups albums by artist however, if a song has more than one contributing artist, a separate album is created. So where i should have 20 albums i have over 100 and its quite annoying. I have tried everything except removing the second artist name from the list to solve the problem, but that will be painstakingly slow. Is there a quick fix?

    *HowTo: Grouping Tracks Into Albums*
    Excuse the long post, but hopefully covering all the bases (that I can think of) will help you understand the cause of your current issue, others that are likely to arise as you try to organise your library & suggest ways to arrange the metadata for the best results.
    <hr>
    *Use an album friendly view*
    iTunes will let you sort music on many columns, some of which are unlikely to group albums together or put the tracks in their normal order. The most useful order for editing the library is probably the *List View* organised as *Album by Artist*. If you're not already there, select the list view and click on the column heading for Album until it reads Album by Artist. If the items you're trying to gather together are still scatted through the library use the options in the *Search Box* to narrow down the results until you can see the items you need to edit. You can also use the *Browser Pane* (View > Show Column Browser & View > Column Browser submenu) to display lists of Artists, Albums, Genres etc. Selecting one or more items in these columns will focus the track listing on matching items.

    *One cover, too many tracks*
    The iPod (and iTunes to a lesser extent) conflates two or more albums with the same title, most obviously with *Greatest Hits*. On the iPod this can result in one album acting as a combination of two or more. Selecting any cover gives all the tracks of all albums with the same title. See below how selecting either of two distinct albums with the same title gives a track listing which is a combination of both albums The workaround for this "Greatest Hits" bug is to give each album a unique title - I tend to go for *Album - Album Artist* as this reads clearly in the iTunes browser. Alternatively you could use the wording as it appears on the cover or append different numbers of spaces for each different album. Somewhat oddly, setting different values for Sort Album doesn't work.
    !http://www.samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/section2.png!
    <hr>
    *Missing Artist or Album not with others by same artist*
    iTunes relies on the Gracenote CDDB database when identifying CD's. This often marks collections or anthologies of an artist's work as a compilation. It also seems that the iTunes Store may mark an album as a compilation in order to keep it grouped when there are tracks with guest or featured artists. However, the compilation flag has the logical function of grouping together tracks with the same album name, but different artists on each track, e.g. "Now That's What I Call Metal 666!". These compilations are then all grouped together at the end of cover flow. Most of us would expect "Greatest Hits" albums to be listed with the other albums by the same album artist. For albums which are essentially by a single album artist or group it is best to set the appropriate value for the *Album Artist* and then set *Part of a compilation* to No.
    !http://www.samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/section3.png!
    <hr>
    *One album, too many covers*
    For true compilations, where each track is by a different artist, the answer is to set *Part of a compilation* to Yes and enable the iTunes preference to *Group compilations when browsing*. If the album is not a compilation however, any tracks which list guest artists may be treated as separate items. Filling in the Album Artist field is enough to link things in iTunes. Sadly, however, most iPod models ignore the Album Artist field when grouping albums so this is only a partial solution. You can simply mark the entire album as a compilation which seems to be the way iTunes often handles it, however that's not an ideal fix. Short of waiting for Apple to address this issue (and as far as I can tell it goes back to the 1st gen. of iPods) we need a workaround. What I do is to put any additional artist info. in square brackets after the song name. E.g. *Track \[Feat. Guest\]* and then set *Artist=Album Artist* for each track. For anthologies where the Album Artist is credited as part of another group, e.g. for Cream tracks on an Eric Clapton anthology, I use *Track \[As Group\]*. For a track where the main Album Artist doesn't receive a credit, e.g. the first track of the Slim Shady LP credited to Jeff Bass, I just set the track name to *Track \[Guest\]* while still setting the artist to the album artist. N.b. I use square brackets to indicate that this is information about the track as distinct from parentheses in the song title and also use this style for Mix/Live/Bonus info.
    Since firmware version 3.x the iPhone & iPod Touch do in fact use the Album Artist field & have stopped grouping on the part of a compilation setting, however setting both *Part of a compilation* to Yes and the *Album Artist* to "*Various Artists*" will group compilation albums both in iTunes and whichever type of iPod/iPhone you happen to be using.

    <hr>
    *One album, still too many covers*
    iTunes may split albums into two or more sections if some tracks from the album have different values for Artist, Album Artist, Album, No. of Discs or Part of a Compilation. Tiny differences such as trailing spaces, accented characters or variants of symbols can sometimes be quite hard to spot. The iPod is also more sensitive to case variations and may split or reorder an album that looks okay in iTunes. Normally overtyping the desired value for each shared field will complete the grouping of the album into one entity. Occasionally, however, this method seems to fail. When this happens I've found that you can force every field to update properly by adding some extra text - e.g. a trailing X, which once applied seems to complete the joining of the tracks into one album. Once this has happened the extra data can be removed and the album should remain properly grouped.
    !http://www.samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/section5.png!
    <hr>
    *Tried that, there are STILL too many covers!*
    The Sort Artist, Sort Album & Sort Album Artist fields can be used to override the normal sort order. For example iTunes automatically drops leading articles (a/an/the) so "The Beatles" are arranged under "B" instead of "T". Occasionally different tracks from the same album can have different values in these sort fields which can also break up the grouping. Making the sort columns visible in iTunes can help with spotting & correcting such problems.
    !http://www.samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/section6.png!
    <hr>
    *One cover for multi-disc album*
    Multi-disc albums are often listed as *Album (CD1)* for CD 1, *Album (CD2)* for CD 2 etc. To display these properly using just one cover, each disc should have the correct *Disc X of Y* values set, and then the entire album should be given the single title Album. Being somewhat obsessive I also renumber the tracks sequentially, working backwards from the last track (so that no two tracks ever have the same number) until I reach disc 1. You can still give tracks from the individual discs different artwork should it be relevant so that the correct artwork will be displayed as the album progresses.
    !http://www.samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/section7.png!
    <hr>
    *Tracks out of sequence*
    Check that all tracks have the same/correct disc no. For a single disc album this should be either blank (my preference) or 1 of 1. iTunes will sort tracks with a disc no. of 1 before those that are blank. Just for fun the iPod sorts them the other way around so an album that is correct in iTunes may be out of sequence on an iPod or vice-versa. In addition ensure that the Artist, Album Artist, Album, Sort Artist, Sort Album Artist & Sort Album fields are consistent across all tracks.
    !http://www.samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/section8.png!
    <hr>
    *One artist, many names*
    With some artists, particularly classical composers, you should be aware of alternative representations of their names. E.g. 2Pac vs. Tupac. The menus will work best if for each artist you standardise on just one form of their name. E.g. make a choice between Mozart, W.A. Mozart or Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then apply it consistently. For classical music I tend also to use the Composer as the Artist & Album Artist and either discard the performer details or place these into the Comments field. In some cases the Sort Artist/Sort Album Artist fields can group alternate forms in iTunes but these will break up again on the iPod. It is best therefore to use Artist & Album Artist consistently so the name is shown the way that you want and Sort Artist & Sort Album Artist to control where it is displayed.

    My iPhoto library has suddenly disappeared from my computer.
    When i click on iPhoto it tells me to choose my library or create a new one. However no library option appears. I have searched the computer for the library but it does not seem to exist anymore. I did not have time machine set up, so there is no back up. Is there any way i can retrieve my library?
    Here is a picture of what appears when i click on iPhoto:

    In terms of searching i have searched for photos on my finder. However, none of the photos that appear are from my iPhoto Library.
    Search with FindAnyFile. You can download it here:   http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php
    Search for any file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the name. If you added at least one image to your library, the library should contain a file with this name, see OldToad's post: Re: Since I updated to iPhoto 9.5.1, my library is not listed or available. How can I find it? Can I use the time machine to restore it?

  • Trying to rename more than ONE artist at a time.

    im trying to rename many album, artist, etc.. names at once was wondering if there is a way to seclect many artists at once to edit cause i'm getting really tired of seclecting each one at a time. thank you.

    Not true. You CAN change multiple items if they are totally UNRELATED. They do not have to have ANYTHING in common.
    However, whatever fields you change will apply to ALL of the tracks selected.
    I had many duplicated artists in my library because of being one or 2 letters off, etc. I'd just highlight all of them, and change the artist field so that ALL the tracks now h ad the same artist. They were from different albums and different genres, and it didn't make a bit of difference.

  • I click on one song and another one starts playing.  Cover art for one artist shows up on another album.  All of my music isn't showing up.  Please help.  Why is this happening?  How can I fix it?

    Sorry for not getting back with you...
    That moves only the iTunes media, not the iTunes library (which is really kinda nebulous).
    iTunes library = iTunes folder and all the media, wherever it is located.
    The /Music/iTunes/ folder contains the iTunes library.itl file, which keeps track of everything in iTunes.
    I do however still have the original MAIN startup drive still in the computer, it's just not the startup.
    This is good you still have it.
    Try this...
    Hold Option and launch iTunes.
    Select Choose library... and select the /iTunes/ folder on the original drive. It should be in /Users/your_user_name/Music/.
    Don't mess with anything. We can get it cleared up.
    Does everything work okay?

  • Grouping single songs under one artist

    Hi,
    I've been busting my brain; how do you group single songs to appear all under ONE artist? Is there a way to do this without changing the artist field? Has it something to do with compilations/sorting category?
    Note, this is for playback on the iPhone but hope this is the right category as you have to do this in iTunes!
    Thanks

    Haha, i'm now talking to my email subscriptions so i've gone mad! I do thank you for the help though.
    So say you have these random songs;
    Yesterday by the Beatles
    Hey Jude by the Beatles
    Hotel California by the Eagles
    Respect Aretha Franklin
    On my iPhone, they each appear under the artist name (Beatles/Eagles/Aretha)
    There still doesn't seem to be a way to plan all these songs from the ARTISTS menu by selecting say, 'various artist' or miscellaneous.
    The only way i can think is rename every artist field to 'various artists' but you loose the artist name this way.
    Message was edited by: MusioMan
    Nope, the artists menu is just that, a list of artists. If we had an *Album Artists* menu then you could find such collections under say "Various Artists" if you grouped them together with an Album name. Even though we don't get an *Album Artist menu* if you do go to the trouble of creating an album name for this collection then you can just choose it from the Album menu. If you happen to be browsing the artists and notice the Beatles entry you can drill down into it, then the album for this collection then having selected a track, turn your iPhone into landscape mode and reselect the album so that all tracks play. Otherwise playlists may be a better bet, and at least you can then leave these tracks with their original album art and other details.

  • Some artists missing from the "following" list

    I noticed that there are some artists that I follow who do not appear in the "following" list of my profile.
    This is a problem when I forget the name of some of my followed artists and I don't find them no longer on the list, loosing this way the possibility to listen to him forever!
    Someone else has the same problem? How can I solve it? there is no other way to access the full list of all my artists?
    many thanks in advance

    recently started using Spotify, so far so good, but following artists and saving albums is important to me, since that's the point of using Spotify for me and if that part is not working properly, why keep track of things that can't be tracked and personalized. I follow a lot of artists and also have saved (not downloaded) albums of these and also non-followed artists.Some of these artists and albums don't show up again in my "Your Music" section under Artists and Albums, they appear in "Recently Played" if I have listened to these. My specific example is for Artist: Biréli Lagréne(not trying to promote the artis here, but that's how I noticed)I click follow, then save some of the albums (all actually) and the next time I m using Spotify the artist is not followed and the albums are not saved, (I have downloaded one Album to test if that cements the artist and album into my list?, just to see what happens)
