One beep......NO BOOT....(but it will eventually)...win 7 64bit

Hi......on a first boot in the morning....I get silence for about 5 seconds and then ONE BEEP a bit longer than the normal start up beep. My HDD is spinning, GPU fan is spinning as is the PSU fan....but no post, no monitor or keyboard lights.....zip. Thinking
it was the ram....I re seated it....no use.....I re seated the cpu....no use...back to the ram swapped slots....and I finally got a boot. Next morning..same again....but wasn't able to get a boot until Id done all of the above 3 or 4 times. That night I swapped
out the ram sticks for different ones and again shut down for the evening. Yes it hot boots fine. Next morning.....normal boot first go..so I figured it was solved. HOWEVER.....next morning again I was reseating everything one thing at a time until it booted.
The system is all new 12 months ago. When its running  I put it through Memtest and I used a GPU test program as well...all passed. Does anyone have any ideas?? I am thinking I might swap out the PSU and see if that's failing...I have noticed that without
doing all the reseating, if I try turning it of and on several times it will eventually boot. Thanks in advance for any offers that may help.

Well I wont be taking it anywhere....I spent several years as a PC tech building and repairing...and gave it up as a bad joke! I have run this issue past many so called "pc techs" and NONE have any clue.
Lets move on shall we? I don't have to take it apart to start it....I can simply push the power button several times and it boots up. The CMOS states I have 12gb ram......win 7 says I have 22gb (16 available)....and yet another area within windows tells
me me I have 18bg with 14 available. Clearly this is all crap....there is in fact 24 gb ram installed. The more I delve into it the sillier it gets. I am thinking I will turf it in the bin and start again. From what I see most of the drama is shit hardware
and shit software on the market...all designed to blow you $$ for little more than a year or two of service!

Amazingly ..... I solved the problem by taking the batteries out of the wireless mouse.
The mouse seemed to work.  The curser would move around and the dock would pop up, but nothing would open.
    Everything's fine now.

  • OS X won't boot but Windows will

Hello, today I started having a serious problem with my iMac when booting it up. It won't get passed the apple logo with the spinning wheel, it just stays at this screen. I've times it at well over 20 minutes and it still refuses to start. I hae tried restarting while holding the commandoption+PR keys, I have also tried restarting after unplugging everything and leting it rest for a minute.
At one point I was able to get it to start after leaving it for about 5 minutes, but the computer ran very slowly upon startup. While it was running I tried doing a secure mepty trash because I've heard that might help a bit, and as it was emptying the trash other weird things started happening. My dock dissappeared for no reason at all, I got a message saying something about a conflict with fonts and that they had been moved around or something, then the computer pretty much locked up, not even letting me quit applications or select anything.
I should note that interestingly enough, my windows boot camp partition is functioning normally and fine, and the problems on the mac side seem to have come out of no where. Although I have noticed that upon booting up into the mac side, before the spinning wheel appears, there is a grey status bar that appears where the spinning wheel should be, beneath the apple logo.
I am at a loss for what I should do at this point as nothing seems to be working. Any ideas?

This usually means critical system files are damaged. Try the following:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • Mac OS won't boot but WinXp will?!

I have a Mid-2009 17" uMBP which my HDD just failed on me. I was iChatting my a family member and tried watching a file on VLC and it started giving me the spinning beach ball. So I hard resetted the uMBP and now when I try and turn on the uMBP it'll just stay on the Apple load screen with the spinning cursor. But if I load WinXP from Boot Camp, it'll load. I failed in backing up my files using Time Machine since I've had it. Is it too late to recover my files using a DIY method? If it is, is it possible to recover my files through WinXP? Please help. I need my files!!!
The picture above has been like that for the past hour. Any other suggestions?!

If you are getting CRC errors on the drive then your options (at least your "inexpensive" options) are extremely limited.
It's likely that while the drive motor works and spins up the disk, the access arms are no longer accurately positioning the read/write heads above the tracks to read your data. The data is still there -- you just can't get to it reliably.
The cheapest and easiest fix is to buy a new drive and re-install the OS on it and forget about getting your data off the old drive. Regardless of which option you choose you will still need to buy a replacement drive. Even IF you can recover your current drive, the drive itself can no longer be trusted.
If you really want your data, you have two paths. One involves a lot of work for you, the other involves very little work but does involve a lot of expense.
The "easy" path involves hiring a data recovery firm and writing a check while someone else does the work. This is very expensive (e.g. you could buy a new computer for what it will cost to just get your data back). They will open the drive (in a dust-free clean room) and remove the platters, which will be installed in one of their drives. They'll perform a head alignment so their reader can accurately read your data. Then they'll copy all the data off the drive for you. They will then either burn a considerable stack of DVDs or they'll write the data to a replacement hard drive (which you'll buy) and return it to you. The price tag will likely cost the better part of $1000 or more (no kidding!)
The "inexpensive" path involves you have some technical know-how and access to the right gear. A program called SpinRite can usually recover the drive well enough to let you make a copy of it. SpinRite costs about $100. SpinRite boots off it's own media and has it's own OS (FreeDOS) and is completely written in assembly. It controls the drive at very low levels and employs numerous clever techniques to recover the drive. It is usually either completely successful or mostly successful. It can take anywhere from over-night to a few days to recover the drive. But there's a catch... SpinRite needs to be running on a computer that has BIOS. Macs don't have BIOS -- they have Intel EFI. This means you'd have to find an old PC (anything with BIOS will work) that also supports SATA disks. You'd then have to install the failing drive in the PC chassis and boot the PC using the SpinRite media. SpinRite can then get to work attempting to recover your drive. It's $100 IF you happen to have an old machine laying around that can run it. Assuming SpinRite recovers your drive, you should immediately copy off all your data to a new disk. Don't trust using the old drive as it'll probably just be a matter of time before it reverts back to it's corrupted state.
Given the headache involved regardless of which option you choose, an appropriately sized backup disk is the MUCH easier and CHEAPER way to avoid all of this in the future. All my computers run Time Machine throughout the day as well as run "SuperDuper!" to create a bootable clone of my drives once per week. It's cheap. It's easy. You don't even have to think about it -- the backups happen all by themselves if you provide the disk drives.

  • Arch x86_64 won't boot, but i686 will. Live USB and HDD.

To be more succinct, what could cause 64 bit arch not to boot when 32 bit arch boots fine on a non-UEFI system that supports 64 bit, when all other variables are constant?
My first response seeing this post would be to immediately assume the noob (me) posting this doesn't know the difference between a 32 and 64 bit system. However, "ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso" (latest 64 bit ubuntu iso) boots from live USB and installs without error. It also came preinstalled with Windows 7 (64 bit), so I'm relatively sure it supports x86_64.
I wrote "archlinux-2014.08.01-dual.iso" (MD5 verified) to my USB. Selecting i686 boots fine. Selecting x86_64 restarts my system, eventually sending me back to the arch live menu after it posts.
Upon recommendation by a WonderWoofy on reddit, I tried to install arch x86_64 by bootstrapping and chrooting from the 64 bit ubuntu live usb. I ended up with same problem, where attempting to load arch reboots my system immediately.
Right now, I'm assuming it's the same issue booting from the live usb (arch iso) and from the arch installation on my hard drive, since they seem identical to me. I haven't tried recreating the install for i686 to see if it works (mainly because it's late -- if it'll help I'll do it upon suggestion).
Here's the only text that shows once I attempt to boot into arch. This is from the hard drive and using syslinux (which is pointed at my root partition on sda -- I don't have a boot partition).
    Loading ../vmlinuz-linux... ok
    Loading ../initramfs-linux.img...ok
Probing EDD (edd=off to disable)... ok
Which doesn't look like it's messing up anywhere...
And of course I'm a noob so go easy on me x)
UPDATE: I found this thread but I'm not seeing his error message, so I'm not sure what to do.

  • Notebook beeps while booting up

After a clean up by tech expert who removed messenger (duplicate) from msconfig and one thing from start up menu,
I installed the latest windows updates. First restart was fine.
Next time I rebooted and heard two beeps after I saw the desktop icons. Rebooted.
Heard one beep. Still hear that beep. Google suggests one beep is normal but I'm not used to beeps.
Old laptop but upgraded with six month old hard disc and drivers by toshiba experts.
Had AVG. Installed microsoft essentials after beep (made no difference).
Am I in trouble or is this fine? Programmes work well. (Famous last words?)

    Hi
Notebook beeps while booting because it runs the POST (power on self test)
This is a usual procedure and nothing unusual.
If you mean this beeps then you should not be worried about that this is ok

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.

All fans work now but get nothing on screen and one beep every three seconds. any way to isolate my problem without taking it in. Waranty long gone.

Try reseating the memory sticks. If no joy try booting with only 1 if you have 2, switching them if no luck with first.

  • GarageBand hangs when opening, but will eventually open- what's the problem

    Hi,
I just upgraded from GarageBand 2 to GarageBand 3. Previously, everything was on my start-up drive. When I upgraded, I moved all the files I could (loops and the like) to a media drive while keeping everything else on the start-up drive. Now, when I open GB3, it hangs and hangs, beach ball spinning, and the name of the application turns red in Activity Monitor, like it's frozen. But, it does eventually open up, after a minute or two, literally. It seems to hang when it starts loading the instruments used in the track. But it still does open and work fine! Well, not exactly fine, it also takes a lot longer than it used to to load a new instrument when I select a new one. Does anyone know what the issue may be?
Oh, and, I tried opening a file, then saving it as something different, then opening that new file, but it does the same thing.
    Thanks!
    William

Thanks for your response, xs4is. I am not on the offending machine at this moment, so I'll have to test your suggestions later this evening. Let me explain a little further what I did that lead up to the issues I'm now experiencing.
I had iLife 05 that came with my computer. I was upgrading to iLife 06. Everything from iLife 05 was on my boot drive- that's how it came and I never changed it. I have the second drive that I use for media files (I edit video- all of those files, my itunes library, etc. is on this drive). Prior to upgrading, I wanted to move everything I could (loops and stuff like that) to the second drive. So, there's a point in the installation right before it actually installs everything- it tells you where it's going to put a bunch of folders, it gives you the path and lets you know you can put them somewhere else if you'd like (ex. "SuchAndSuch" Folder will be installed in /Library/Application Support/Garageband. If you want to, you can choose a different folder. (to paraphrase)). At this point (for each of the folders full of files that it was installing), I followed the path it gave, took the folder that was already there ("SuchAndSuch") and copied it to the second drive, I then deleted that original folder and redirected the installer to the new folder. I even duplicated the folder path, to make it easier for me to understand, so that for the example above, the new path was "SuchAndSuch" Folder will be installed in /MediaDrive/Library/Application Support/Garageband. I am certain I did this part correctly. I created the "Library", "Application Support", & "Garageband" folders-- I only actually moved that last folder and deleted it off the Boot Drive. Anyway, I was pretty sure all this was okay to do because I was only moving the original stuff it was telling me it would be updating or replacing... I hope this makes sense and might help to figure just where or where I went wrong.
I'll have to look later to make sure, but I'm pretty sure there were no other duplicate software instruments in the browser window. There may be dplicates on the drive but not in the window I suppose. And I deleted the old ones off the boot drive.
That's a good idea of creating the alias folder- this could be the root of the problem. But I figured it'd be okay since I was telling the installer to install the stuff on the second drive.
I suspect there may be some small files that I moved to the second drive that really should be on the boot drive- some sort of files that act as a map or something for garageband. Maybe an invisible file? ...I hate those invisible files.
**Oh wait!** I just remembered something, when I was copying those folders (like I was saying above), it did prompt me for my admin name and password! So, wouldn't that mean I was moving something, well, important? Instead of just the loops and stuff?
Yeah, that's probably a key clue, eh?
I'll also try the Garageband index tip and let you know.
Thanks so much for your help!!
    William

  • P35 NEO-2 FR won't boot. One beep every few seconds.

Hello, I hope someone can help me
Out of the nothing my computer crashed. There was a blue screen, but only for a split second, so I couldn’t get any information from that. After I tried to turn it back on I only got a black screen.
    Messages from my PC:
One beep every few seconds. -- Means: DRAM refresh failure.
The LEDs on the board have the combination red-red-green-green. -- Means: Decompressing BIOS Image to RAM for fast booting.
Obviously I tried another RAM module. But it didn’t help. I don’t know what I should do, because I can’t even get to the BIOS. The screen just stays black.
PS: I didn’t OC or try to flash a new Bios version.
    My system:
    P35 NEO-2 FR, BIOS v. 1.8, S/N: 601-7345-100B0805092463
    Intel Q9300
    G.Skill 2 GB DDR2 PC2-6400 CL5-5-5-15 (also tried brand new Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800 MHz CL5-5-5-18)
    MSI N460GTX Hawk
    beQuit Straight Power 600W

Okay, please have a look at this document:
    http://www.ami.com/support/doc/AMIBIOS8_Checkpoint_and_Beep_Code_List_PUB.pdf
As you can see, there are two main routines going on after you hit the power-on button:
    1. Bootblock Initialization
    __ and __
    2. POST Code
    Your problem description ...
    Quote
The LEDs on the board have the combination red-red-green-green. -- Means: Decompressing BIOS Image to RAM for fast booting.
... indicates that your system halts in the first of the two main routines I just mentioned. To be more precise, it hangs at Bootblock Initialization Checkpoint D5, which is defined as follows:
    Quote
Bootblock code is copied from ROM to lower system memory and control is given to it. BIOS now executes out of RAM. Copies compressed boot block code to memory in right segments. Copies BIOS from ROM to RAM for faster access. Performs main BIOS checksum and updates recovery status accordingly.
In the last two phases of this checkpoint:
    Quote
Copies BIOS from ROM to RAM for faster access. Performs main BIOS checksum and updates recovery status accordingly.
The actual BIOS Code is copied into RAM and checked for integrity. When BIOS corruption is detected (=wrong BIOS checksum), the system will automatically jump into BIOS Recovery Mode (which is a sub-routine of the Bootblock Initialization routine).
Now, this brings us to the actual meaning of the beep(s) you hear:
    Quote
One beep every few seconds. -- Means: DRAM refresh failure.
The BIOS Recovery mode (which is not part of the actual P.O.S.T. Routine, but a sub-routine of the Bootblick Intialization Routine) has its own set of Beep Code definitions which are described on page 15 of the document I linked you to:
    Quote
    Boot Block Beep Codes
    Number of Beeps -- Description
1 -- No media present. (Insert diskette in floppy drive A:)
2 -- ‘AMIBOOT.ROM’ file not found in root directory of diskette in A:
3 -- Insert next diskette if multiple diskettes are used for recovery
    4 -- Flash Programming successful
    5 -- File read error
7 -- No Flash EPROM detected
    10 -- Flash Erase error
    11 -- Flash Program error
    12 --‘AMIBOOT.ROM’ file size error
13 -- BIOS ROM image mismatch (file layout does not match image present in flash device)
Consequently, the meaning of that single beep, that repeats every few settings is not "DRAM refresh failure" (this would be its meaning in the P.O.S.T. Routine, but we are looking at the Recovery Routine), but it actually means:
    Quote
1 -- No media present. (Insert diskette in floppy drive A:)
What you have to do is this:
    1. Hook up an internal (!!) floppy drive to your mainboard
    2. Prepare an AMI BIOS Recovery disk:
--> Download the latest BIOS Archive for your board from the product site
--> Extract the actual BIOS File and rename it to AMIBOOT.ROM
--> Copy the renamed BIOS File to an empty & formated floppy disk
    3. Put the disk that contains the AMIBOOT.ROM file into the internal floppy drive that you connected to the mainboard.
    4. Pray that the system finds the disk, reads the file on it and performs a recovery flash

  • My phone will randomly disconnect from the wifi and when I retype the password it says it is wrong. It will eventually work but I have to wait for a message to pop up on my screen to allow me to retype the wifi password.

When I first got my phone it worked perfectly fine with the wifi. Although later on I began to have problems connecting it. It will randomly disconnect from the wifi and when I try to retype the password it tells me it is wrong, although it is right. It will eventually work but in its own time, a message will pop up and allow me to type in the password and it will work. But sometimes it takes an hour or more and sometime it takes 10 minutes. I've seen where other people have had this problem but I don't know how to fix it. I'm not sure if it's an issue with my phone or if it's with my wifi. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Does this happen with all Wi-Fi hotspots?  A specific one?
Have you tried forgetting the Wi-Fi connection and then reconnecting to it?
What about power cycling the Wi-Fi router?

  • Apps will not load on normal boot but work in Safe Boot?

I recently moved and my machine was working perfectly in my old place, but after setting it up in my new place I've run into this strange issue. This may be related to Security Update 2015-003 which was installed right before the move.
Specifically Spotify and Google Drive will not load on a normal boot but work perfectly in safe boot. I can't figure out what the issue is.
    Things I've tried so far:
Disk Utility verify/repair permissions, check disk
    Deleting Spotify/GDrive folders in ~/Library/Application Support/
    Reinstalling the software
    Multiple soft/hard reboots
Removing various programs that load on boot in case of conflicts
None of it works and I can't figure it out! With Spotify I get the "Spotify quit unexpectedly" dialog with the option to ignore/report/reopen. With GDrive it just never loads, though the process shows in the Activity Monitor. It does not show in the topbar nor does it actually function, just seems to hang.
Any thoughts or advice? Below is a copy/paste of the Spotify crash report:

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • I want to wipe iBook of it's content, but it will not boot up from DVD

Can someone tell me how I clear off the content of iBook and install the basic set of the applications? I have the original OS 9 disks but they will not boot up with these. I have gradually upgraded the OS so I don't have disks to match 10.4.11.
I want to give this away, as I bought new MacBook Pro recently and I have all of the files on the new computer, (and on another hard drive).
Thank you for any help from out there.

No problem; I usually answer good questions already solved. (It's for the search engine.) Here's how to wipe a corporate or government ATA hard drive.
Should you be concerned about spies, industrial and foreign, or even you own personal information, there is a standard method of erasing ATA disks that contain government classified information. Most ATA disks have it built in (and is a concern when purchasing computers for classified research). It's extreme, but sometimes necessary: information otherwise remains stored on 'bad' blocks, &c.
At one time, only the DOS program HDDerase activated the secure erase in ROM. For Mac users, the Linux program 'hdparm' (which has other uses) will do this from a Live Linux distribution on CD (unless you can boot a USB Flash Drive).'Darwin' might have it.

Note that, if you stop the process part way though, the disk may not be usable again (except to spies). Also, nothing is guaranteed.
If Darwin doesn't have it, or if it doesn't work, LiveCD distributions, such as Mint, Berry, & those of major distributions can be found here:

  • PB Screen Dead? Won't Boot, But Second Monitor Will

My 7-year-old G4 17" Powerbook won't boot via it's onboard LCD display...but a second monitor will. I'm assuming the monitor should be replaced, or perhaps a video card?
What's typically the problem associated with these symptoms?
    Thanks for any help.
    Terry D

Step one is to boot the computer and shine a light through the "Apple" window on the back of the display and see if you see anything happening on the display.  This may be a little tricky, but the best time to do this is during the boot process when usually things happen in the center of the screen.  (I am assuming that you have already tried the brightness control, as I have had problems with the TiBooks going to minimum brightness on boot for some reason as yet unknown to me, though I can still at least see some detail on the screen.)
Now, if the display is actually changing when you are providing an artificial backlight, then you are maybe in luck a little bit, since it is likely that the so-called Inverter Board has crapped out.  These can be replaced with varying degrees of difficulty from almost trivial to a little involved.  Find your machine here on the iFixit site for more information and a guide to changing the board.
The other possibility is that the fluorescent panel panel has itself died, which would require a much more involved repair and probably would not be worth it.
