One logical network per VLAN?

I am not using network virtualization and currently using traditional VLANs. Now what I did currently is I have one logical network, one network site, and in that network site contains all my VLAN's (23 right now).
What I noticed is when I create a cloud I can't choose the network... I can only choose the logical switch which will give that cloud complete access to all VLAN's right?
So in my situation would it be better to just create a logical switch for each VLAN we have? Keep in mind this is a multi-tenant environment so that is why there are so many VLANs.
Most of the videos I find go into Network Virtualization which is not what I'm trying to do :-(

Hi se
This is how I do it (I don't have WLSE):
- Create a ssid per vlan in the AP.
- Configure switch to AP connection as a trunk.
- If needed, configure helper addresses in switch.
If you need routing between VLANs, you will need a router, afaik AP cannot do it.

  • Logical network to physical network mapping (subnets and VLANS) in SCVMM 2012 R2

In much of the blogs, documentation and literature on VMM, there are examples of deploying multiple logical networks onto one physical network i.e. Cluster (logical) + Storage (logical) + Backup (logical) + Live Migration (logical) + Management
(logical) on top of Datacenter (physical).
Does this mean it would be possible to have one (physical) flat VLAN-less network with one subnet and then have all those logical networks (with subnets and VLANs) on top of it? Even with a simple unmanaged L2 switch that doesn't support VLANs itself?
If not, just how do you map multiple logical networks to just one physical network? How does that work in practice? Is a L3 switch needed to route traffic between logical networks for example?

Hi. VMM Networking may be overwhelmed for the most, at first. But you really need to understand the modeling here and how things are related to each other. Especially if using NIC teaming in WS 2012 (and R2) together with this mix.
I suggest that you read the following whitepaper where we explain how to setup networking in VMM (also to support network virtualization, but that is absolutely not mandatory): http://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Hybrid-Cloud-with-NVGRE-aa6e1e9a

  • Prevent routing between 2 logical networks without a VLAN

Background: We have some older hubs in our network. As such, we cannot implement a VLAN yet. We have a 10/100 ethernet network across our campus for our production users. We have multiple buildings on the campus and one physical network. We are installing Cisco 1100 WAPs to provide our guests with wireless internet access. Our DHCP server is configured to hand out 192.168.1.x addresses to our guests. Our DHCP server has 192.168.0.x reservations for our production machines.
    Questions:
    1) Would this ACL prevent traffic from routing between the 192.168.0.x and 192.168.1.x networks?
    access-list 105 deny ip 192.168.0.0 0.0.0.255 192.168.1.0 0.0.0.255
    2) Does anyone have a better solution for preventing our guests from accessing our production machines? Once all the hubs are replaced with switches, we plan to implement a VLAN.
    TIA,
    Mark

Are you sure you want to protect your Guest WLAN from your production Network, not the otherway round? Your access-list states that the .0 network (production) is not allowed to access the .1 (wlan) network. Then, i don't see in your config the activation of any of your access-list. They are just defined without being activated on any of your interfaces. Plus there is missing the allow at the end of the access-list, because there is an implicite deny at the end of any access-list.

  • Bare Metal Deployments: The BMC can't have IP Address defined in logical network?

I have defined a logical network, a logical switch, and a port profile.  I apply the logical switch (the NIC teaming settings) and a virtual network adapter that inherits the hosts network configuration (pass through config. no software defined networking)
to each of my Hyper-V hosts successfully.
The issue occurs once I have defined that logical network, I can no longer deploy bare metal hosts because the BMC obtains an IP within that logical network.  You see the BMC IPs and NICs are on the same subnet/VLAN.
What's the best practice or perhaps best method to get around this issue?

I am not sure if I follow you on this one.
You have created a logical network for your BMC in VMM? If so, why have you done that?
The bare-metal process requires both PXE and
DHCP during this process, and the scope should therefore be in DHCP and not VMM for this purpose.
Can you try to do that? (If this is a lab environment, you could add the DHCP service to your PXE server or even VMM server).

  • SF200 vs C3560-X and per-VLAN RSTP: Turn off STP on SF200s?

I have a network with pairs of 3560-X switches servicing nearly 150 access switches (44 access switches per pair) and several hundred clients. The access switches are a mixture of SF100-D (unmanaged) and SF200 (managed). I have an odd business requirement that no more than 100 clients can reside in a LAN, so I have VLANs set up on the 3560-X pairs. They're doing load balancing between the VLANs using per-VLAN rapid spanning-tree protocol, and for the SF100-D endpoints this load balancing is working out as I planned. Failover works as intended whether that be a cable failure or a 3560-X failure.
With the SF200s, that load balancing is not working, instead sending all traffic to one 3560-X for all VLANs, and it's because the SF200s do not support per-VLAN RSTP. So I thought, why not just turn STP off on the SF200s? That would take them out of the spanning tree process and make them behave like SF100-Ds.
When I try that, I can observe ports on the 3560-Xs forwarding or blocking VLANs as I intended; even if I accept traffic on alternating VLANs on the SF200, the 3560-Xs show me it's blocking or forwarding each VLAN on those ports as I wanted them to. Multicast filtering still works, as does other SF200 functionality.
But is this a good idea? MSTP isn't an option for me since the SF200 doesn't support MSTP either, and the sheer volume of access switches make the 200s a better bargain than 300s. I found an example here that explains how to do it with MSTP and SG300s but I don't like the idea of access switches being STP root, and there would be too many of them to manage that.
(As an aside, the 3560-X pairs do IP routing up to our cores, so any STP traffic remains isolated to that pair and any access switch that speaks STP. This way, I don't affect the cores with any STP or cabling mistakes caused to a given pair.)

Thanks for confirming what I found. I'll keep the setup like this, then.
As for port security, the access switches are in locked cabinets at their locations, and the distribution switches are in locked and ventilated closets. Getting to either of those requires signing keys out, someone watching behind whoever's working in there, audit trails, and so on.
And even with all of that, endpoint devices get changed too often that port security would be a big, big support headache. So I think we're good.
(I practice port security in other locations that are more accessible, and that has caught some users thinking they can cheat the system.)

  • Removal of Virtual Switch Logical Networks

    Hi,
I've recently managed to get SCVMM 2012 R2 up and running and it's currently managing 2 hosts in a cluster. I've migrated both hosts onto a logical switch, and I'm now at the stage where I'm ready to delete the LN's created for the per-host switches. I've
deleted the Virtual Switches and deleted the VM Networks associated with the switches successfully, but when I go to delete the LN's associated with the Virtual Switches, I get a 25100 error.
In dependencies, it shows that each LN has one of the hosts as a dependency but when I log into the hosts, there's nothing to indicate that they're in use. Is there any way to fix this or do I need to manually delete them from the database?
    Cheers,
    Ed

    Hi Sir,
    >>In dependencies, it shows that each LN has one of the hosts as a dependency
    If you mean this :
Please open the hosts' properties then check the hardware option and uncheck the "logical network connectivity":

  • VMM2012 SP1 console giving error message when trying to assign logical networks

    Hello,
we are encountering the following Situation.
I have a new Hyper-V Cluster (2012) with at that time two nodes.
When I try to configure the Logical Network connectivity on a virtual Switch (Preparing the use of multiple VLANs) it works on one of the nodes but on the other one we are getting the following error message:
    Virtual Machine Manager
VMM is unable to process one of the provided parameters for the cmdlet (Set-SCVMHostNetworkAdapter):
Cannot convert 'System.Object[]' to the type 'Microsoft.SystemCenter.VirtualMachineManager.HostNetworkAdapter' required by parameter 'VMHostNetworkAdapter'. Specified method is not supported.
    ID: 12416
Does anyone has an idea what I am missing here?
    Thank you
    Sascha

Could it be possible that your network adapter does not support VLAN tagging?
I've run into this issue in my lab using consumer oriented NICs and trying to VLAN networking. A good test would be to do the following:
    Go to Hyper-V Manager
Create a Virtual Switch and set it to a VLAN.
Do you get an error message? If so, your NIC (or NIC driver) does not support VLAN tagging. If not, then you are fine and you have a problem with VMM somewhere.
This issue can also occur due to bad drivers on a NIC card as well.  However, for troubleshooting purposes, you will want to go down to the lowest level (Hyper-V Manager) to make sure that this isn't a Hyper-V issue and really is a VMM issue.
    Hope this helps!

  • Logical Switch and Logical Network

Hello All...................I have Hyper-V Failover Cluster based on 5 Hosts and I am managing it with VMM 2012 R2. I was slightly confused with respect to Logical Network and Logical Switch in the Fabric Settings.  I would appreciate if someone could
shed a little light on the difference between them.  Also, while there is a Logical Network defined by default (Name of the Virtual Switch of Hosts), there is nothing defined in the Logical Switch.  Which one is mandatory? Logical Network or Logical
Switch? Can I delete the default Logical Network?

    Hi Nick,
Please find below link for the whitepaper mentioned by Kristian.
    https://gallery.technet.microsoft.com/Hybrid-Cloud-with-NVGRE-aa6e1e9a
For a complete reference please refer below series. This covers VMM 2012 SP1 but should be fine with R2 as well.
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/scvmm/archive/2013/01/08/virtual-networking-in-vmm-2012-sp1.aspx
Logical Network is defined for easier management and used in Network Virtualization where as Logical switch is used to configure networking in multiple Hosts rather than creating individual Virtual switches in each host. If it were me I'll leave the
default logical network as there is no harm of doing nothing in it.
I hope this will shed some light into your situation.

  • Removing Logical Networks and Subnets from Hyper-V Host Network Adapters that are greyed out

    Hello All
I am new to SCVMM 2012 R2 and I have create a Hyper-V Cluster and now creating Logical Networks and Port Profiles and Logical Switches. I have figured out how to create all of them properly now, but I have made some mistakes in the past. I have a Logical
Switch created and assigned to network adapters on the hosts. Now I am trying to add the other switches to other adapters, but I have associations on network adapters to Logical Switches and Subnets that are not correct and need to be removed so I can add
the correct ones, but in the console the network adapters that I need to work with the information is grayed out and I can't change the information.
I am not an expert at Powershell. Below you can see a Logical Network and Sunets associated
to a Network adapter. Can someone help figure out how to remove the information so I can assign the correct Logical Network?
I woul so much appreciate this. I know there is a way to do this in
PowerShell but I don't know Powershell that much. I
    am savoing all the
powershell scripts ever time I configure something in SCVMM but I have had no luck trying to
    revearse what I did.
    Help Please

This shows that an Uplink profile associated with this host, links to these logical networks. In order to remove this successfully, you must remove the logical switch and uplink deployed to the hosts.
For a complete overview and guidance on the required configuration, have a look at the whitepaper we created.

  • Logical Network question

I created a logical network on one of my OVS 3.1 servers, but I'm not sure how to use it. I already have a standard network created for my VMs but I thought that I could use a logical network for the VMs on one physical server to all talk to each other more efficiently. I just don't know how to make that actually happen.
After I created the logical network my VMs on that server all created an eth1 device. I haven't done anything to further configure eth1 on those VMs and I'm not sure what I should do. Has anyone used a logical network in OVS effectively?
Here's an example of the ifconfig output for eth1 on one of my VMs:
    eth1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:21:F6:AA:00:19
    inet6 addr: fe80::221:f6ff:feaa:19/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
    RX packets:100 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:27 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
    RX bytes:6600 (6.4 KiB) TX bytes:5927 (5.7 KiB)

My understanding is that you would go into Networking, and select the network where these servers all exist... and remove the VM role from that project. Then you can add these servers to the new network.
But you may not be able to do that with the servers up.

  • Creating Logical Networks and Switches via SPF

    Hi,
Is it possible to create Logical switches and logical networks in VMM by calling SPF REST APIs. I can see only a GET API for logical networks and none for Logical switches. If they exist can someone point me to a link to the documentation?
    Thanks,
    Venky

    Hi
You can only get logical network information -
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn470018.aspx
The purpose of SPF is to be used as web service for Tenants. As logical networks and switches are objects that are maintained by administrators they cannot be managed by SPF. Logical networks have get operation because you might want to create VLAN-based
VM Networks depending on what is configured in Logical networks. For administrating logical switches and networks administrators will use PowerShell or the VMM console.

  • Logical Network - Cloud

I have a defined a Logical Network and have added a Site into it. Also, I added a pool of IP Addresses as well so that whenever a Virtual Machine is being made through VM Templates, IP Address is available for it.
I am unable to see this Logical Network in the Cloud.  There are currently two Logical Networks, default one and the one that I created.  I can only see the default Logical Network in the Cloud and cannot see the Logical Network that I created.  What
    could I be Missing?

The logical network(s) are associated with host groups, so ensure that they are associated with the host group(s) you have added to your cloud, or else they won't be visible.

  • Logical reads per second

I have two databases - one is a clone of the other, amde a few months ago. Database A has somewhat more data, since it's the active production database, but not significantly more - perhaps 10% greater. They are on different boxes. Database A is on a Sun 280R 2-processor box. Database B is on a Dell 2950 with 2 dual-core processors. So this isn't exactly comparing apples to apples. However, when I run the same query on the two databases, I get radically different results. Against Database A, the query takes about 7 minutes. On Database B, it takes about 2 seconds. Logical reads per second on Database A reach 80,000-90,000; on Database B, they're about 3,000. There are a few configuration differences (both databases use automatic memory management):
    Database A Database B
    db_file_multiblock_read_count 64 16
    log_buffer 14290432 2104832
    open_cursors 1250 300
    sga_max_size 4194304000 536870912
    sga_target 2634022912 536870912
    shared_pool_reserved_size 38587596 7340032
The timings were taken off-hours so neither database would be busy. I'm baffled by the extreme difference in execution times. Any help appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Harry
