One person, one iPhone, one laptop. Two homes in two states, two external drives, two identical copies of my music library.  Many headaches.

I feel like this question is asked endlessly on these boards, but somehow I still can't find a relevant answer... So, apologies for rehashing a variant of the same question!
I have one (ancient) MacBook Pro, and one (ancient) iPhone.  I carry both back and forth between two states: the state where I work and the state where I live the rest of the time.  My ancient MBP and my ancient iPhone are too small to carry my whole music collection (which is quite large—larger than a new phone or laptop would reasonably support, anyway).   My mobile apps and my podcasts live on my laptop, but my music library lives on an external drive.  I have two external drives now, one in each state where I live/work.  I also have a copy of everything on my desktop machine at work, but I've given up long ago trying to sync to multiple computers.  I'll settle for now for syncing to one computer (my MBP), which sometimes is connected to one copy of my library, and sometimes is connected to another copy of my library.
I know that I can make multiple iTunes libraries, with duplicate copies of my podcast subscriptions, my apps, and my playlists and music, and keep switching which one my phone is set to sync to (wiping it each time, and possibly losing some settings in the process?)   But that's a pain in the neck.  Plus, it's hard to keep my podcasts active in both libraries, because iTunes podcast subscriptions are like frail little tamagotchi critters that need constant love, nurturing, and encouragement, or else they wither and die.
Is there any way to have a single library, with my apps and podcasts on the laptop, which just happens to make use of the "local" copies of my music on whichever external drive happens to be attached?
Or do I need the google cloud + android if I want to unify my listening and syncing life?
Thanks!

Hi,
There are several reasons which may cause the backup to be full instead of incremental, such as source volume snapshot is deleted, from which the last backup was taken.

Is there like in a hard drive of which iTunes can read the media, which will not require me to add and delete media onto iTunes, because of a lack of space on my laptop?

just get an ext HD, and point your itunes library to that drive so now you'll just keep all your media on this ext

Depending on which email client software you use
the files should be in 'your home folder' library, esp.
if you use Mail application.... ~/Library/Mail
Since you don't specify what mail application,
that would most be associated with the file.
I notice there are some items to the right of your post
where it says "more like this' so that may be worth a
look to see if similar issues were answered. Also, the
Help viewer in your system is a searchable database.
Seems that google also brings up fair information, too.
Do you have a complete bootable clone of your entire
Mac system on an externally enclosed hard disk drive?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • One person who is set up on home computer cannot use firefox

There are three people who have access to use the desktop. Of the three, one person is either not able to access firefox or for some reason cannot access the internet.

Windows drivers for Intel wireless cards are known problematic.. If you have plenty of signal and it still cannot keep or hold the connection the issue can simply be the type of wireless.
Another problem is using names that windows does not easily handle.
eg If you set the TC using apple names, like
Fred Blog's Airport Time Capsule wireless24ad12
Then to windows this is too long.. it has spaces and it has illegal character.
Change all names on the TC to suit windows. Short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Also security must be suitable.. I have no idea how old or what OS your dell is, but if you still have issues.. pull off the security on the TC for a test.. if the computer suddenly works, it is not compatible with WPA2 AES. Make sure you also use a password that is mix upper and lower case plus numbers.. avoid special characters and make it 10-20 characters long say.. it is not required to be more than that unless you are paranoid.

  • How can I merge two iPhoto libraries stored on an external drive?

Today I was in a One-to-One at the Apple Store.  I want to merge two i-Photo libraries into one.  One library is on my Air, the other is on my iMac.  Both libraries have been moved to an external drive.  When I try to move one onto the other, they won't go.  Yet I am certain that while at the store today, the person there started to merge them.  He did not need the library manager software in order to do so.  We stopped the merge in order to move on to another issue.  Now that I am home, I can't get the libraries to merge.  What am I failing to do?  Thanks!

The only way to merge two libraryies is to use  iPhoto Library Manager which will merge two libraries and keep keywords, titles, faces, places, and other metadata intact.
If one imports one library into another library every image file in the first library, originals, thumbnails, face files, etc,  get imported as an original photo. You will end up with a total mess.  DO NOT IMPORT ONE LIBRARY INTO ANOTHER LIBRARY!
If you have backup copies of your libraries get them back and use iPhoto Library Manager to merge them.

  • I check artists or albums to sync to my iphone and it says it syncs but then does not show up on my phone's music library. HELP

So, I'm trying to sync all my Jason Mraz to my iPhone. On iTunes, after I plug in my iPhone to my MacBookPro, on the iPhone tab I check the artist "Jason Mraz." I then sync my phone. I goes through the process then when I check the music library on my iPhone nothing shows up. I then try the same procedure with checking each individual album. Same thing. I tried turning the phone off and on to see if it would show up after I did that, and still nothing. Please help me!!

Un-sync all your music to remove it from the device, then restart (hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go). Now re-sync your music.

  • I want to add albums from my libary without removing the one on my iphone and i have home sharing on?

i dont know why but when i try to manage albums manually it keeps saying that i have to remove libary on my phone but i just want to add a few albums... help?

In order to do this, you'll need to enable the Manually manage music and videos option from under your iPod's Summary tab.  Keep in mind that manual management of your iPod's contents is an entirely different way of handling how content is copied to your iPod.  See this article for more information about manually managing your iPod's contents.
Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
You'll only need to make this one change once.  No need to worry about doing anything else any other time you sync your iPod after that.
However, I would urge you to invest in an external hard drive to store your iTunes library on instead.  If something were to happen to your iPod, you'll lose everything that is stored there.  External hard drives of large capacity can be found for pretty cheap these days.

  • Can I do this?  One external drive, two computers.

This is what I would like to do. I have an iMac and a MacBook. I use both equally.
    I just got a 250gig FireLite drive.
My ideal situation would be to have my iTunes music and Library stored on the FireLite, and each computer referencing that.
So when I am at work with my MacBook, I plug in the FireLite and everything is all good. Then, say, maybe while I am at work, I buy some music on iTunes, or import a CD. Then I go home, and plug in the FireLite to the iMac, and everything is all good. It sees and plays the newly imported music just fine.
I can switch the drive from computer to computer, and everything is always all good on both machines.
Is this possible? Nothing would live on the computers....nothing in the User/Music folder. Everything would be on the FireLite.
It seems like it should work...but before I go moving things around and changing settings, I want to make sure, or else I'll end up with a huge mess later on.
    Thanks!

Copy your /Music/iTunes folder to the external.
Start iTunes holding the Option key.
    Select *Choose existing library*.
Select the iTunes library file in the iTunes folder on the external.
    Delete the /Music/iTunes folder.
Connect it to the other computer.
Start iTunes holding the Option key.
    Select *Choose existing library*.
Select the iTunes library file in the iTunes folder on the external.
    File -> Add to library.
Select the iTunes music folder in /Music/iTunes/.
This will add all music from the other computer.
    Delete the /Music/iTunes folder.
    That's it.
Everything will be available wherever you connect the external.
Make sure the external is connected, powered on and mounted before starting iTunes.

  • Why Do I have Two Identical folders in my music Library?

    Hi.
I have a music folder with 1200 songs.
I created a single compilation on itunes (ver.11) and everything was ok until i decided to put that compilation folder to my iPhone 5.
Now I have 2 folders of the same compilation on my iphone music app. The songs was not splitted in the 2 folders: every folder has the same number of tracks (1200 songs).
Itunes copied the music on my iPhone but it didn't copied the files twice, cuz i have checked the amount of space on my iPhone.
I think it depends on how many songs are in the same folder.
someone can tell me the max number of song on the same folder?
I tried to split the folder in 2 with 600 song but i got the same prob: 1 folder was ok, the other folder with ALL music track from the 2 different folders! (I name the folders (Best Of 01, and Best Of 02).
    Any ideas?
Someone know how to fix this? I just want 1 folder and not 2 identical folders!
(sorry for my bad english: i dunno if I write everything in a proper way)

It may be "normal" but it is not acceptable.
Lets say I have four folders that I sync from my PC to my iPhone.  iTunes then creates four folders on my iPhone with the actual photos and presumbaly the same folder names that are on my PC.  Then iTunes creats another folder with pointers to all the photos, well the synced photos, not the camera roll. (Why not the camera roll too if this is such a great feature)  Yes I am so dumb that I can't figure out which folder has the picture I want (even though my folder names are descriptive of the contents; Family, Friends, Work, Hot Dude's) so I go to this catch all folder to find my picture.
All it is is CLUTTER, this, like so many other bugs (poor features), should be left to the user to decide, not Apple. I don't want it there and I defenitely don't need it there.

  • Is it possible to make two type of partitions onto an external drive?

    Hi,
I'm on an intel iMac using Tiger and I know to back up my hard drive I need to choose the GUID partition and Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in order to be able to boot from the partition.
So if I make 4 partitions is it possible to make 3 partitions GUID Mac Extended (Journaled) and then make 1 that is Apple Partition Map? I tried it and I couldn't figure it out using my Tiger Install disk and selecting Disk Utility option.
My sister is using a Powerbook PC G4 also using Tiger and I want to make a bootable copy for her as well but just wondering if this can be done?
    S.

    Niel,
Thanks, so if I format it all as APM I can either clone OSX 10.4.11 which I have on my internal now. If I do a backup of my intel and Powerbook PC both of those will already have Tiger on them so do I need to do another Tiger install on each of those partitions?
Also by doing it this way I can't boot from a parition onto my intel can I?
Guess I'll have to weigh whose system is more important or just back up her drive as GUID on my computer and she can restore from it if she has too but won't be able to boot from it.

  • External Drive Two Days Old .. suddenly No Time Machine at All?

I have enjoyed watching Time Machine for about 48 Hrs. and this morning I noticed I was not hearing my Ext. Hard Drive (G-Tech Q, 500 gb). The drive's light was still on so I thought the iMac OS put the drive to sleep. I depressed the Time Machine icon on my Dock and a pop-up came up indicating "Connecting To Server" with a sub-title "Connecting to backup volume..." This pop-up just continually shows the barber pole type progress bar but nothing happens. I then went to my System Preferences and depressed the Time Machine icon. The message I got was "Loading Time Machine" but nothing actually happens. I would have thought there would be a "Time Out" eventually that would give me an error code, but no such luck. Anyone know what gives???

While this topic may be "answered" I feel that I have to note the same problem occurring with a Western Digital My Book Premium II 1TB drive. Backups would proceed along fine until I would discover that the machine had stopped logging hours ago. The drive power light would be off and the disk no longer appeared on the desktop. Hard Disk Utility cannot "see" the disk in order to mount it. A press of the "soft power" button on the drive would mount the drive and I would then be able to start backups again. The drive shows no problems with Hard Disk Utility "repair", it has even been reformatted and its RAID 0 configuration performed again with WD tools. The WD Drive Manager shows no problems. This has never happened before upgrading from 10.5.2 to 10.5.3 although when trying to retrieve files from Time Machine the display would "freeze" for minutes sometimes and the user interface would thereafter be inconsistent (stuttering selections) while within Time Machine. Turning of the Power Saver Put drive(s) to sleep whenever possible selection is a poor "solution" to the problem. Also, it would be nice to determine which drives should be allowed to go to sleep should the user need to do so.

  • Lighroom 3 on two Macs utilising one external drive

    Hello
    This my first post
I use Lightroom 3 on a MacBook Pro. My photographs(library) is held on external disk
I have recently purchased a MacBook Air for use in the field, I have installed LR3 and have
what I thought would be a simple issue.
How can i access the photographs from both Macs??
    grateful for any input

    Welcome to the forum!
There are a couple of "solutions" to your problem.  The easiest, and possibly the best for you (although it is a bit slower) is to copy your catalog onto the external drive as well.
Then when you plug in the drive, you will always have your latest catalog for access.
The other way is to keep a local copy of your catalog, and copy it onto the local drive as a way to transfer it from one computer to the other.
This has the problem of possibly not being in sync, that is, you forgot to copy it over once and did some editing.  Then you would end up with essentually two different catalogs, instead of one in two places.
You can copy the catalog either with your OS, or you can "export as catalog" and specify the external drive as the destination.  Then, on your other computer, "import from catalog" and only take the meta-data settings (it's on the import dialog box).
Personally, when I'm traveling, I have my catalog on my external drive as well.  It just makes life easier, and I don't have to worry about it being out of sync, or losing it (and not the images).
So, I would go with the first method, at least to start.  To get your catalog over there, you can either export as catalog or copy it, either one will work.
You can find the location of your catalog file (if you don't know where it is) in the catalog settings menu prompt.  Both the location and the name will be displayed.
    Cheers!

  • Booting two Macs from one external drive: 10.8 and App Store?

I boot two Macs from one external harddrive. Does this mean that when 10.8 is sold exclusively via the App Store and thereby linked to a unique hardware identifier, I am going to have issues with activation/authentification each time I switch machines? I have avoided the App Store since I discovered that an app I bought there, and which I really needed to open automatically on log-in, had to be manually re-activated with my Apple ID after every switch (so that I eventually deleted it and reverted to an earlier, non-App Store version).
