Online Java courses ?

Folks,
Does anyone know of a good online Java course where there are server resources available for uploading servlets and connecting to database, etc. and testing them in a client/server environment ?
Some of the tutorials are great, but you need a server to test with...unless of course there is something I can install to simulate a client/server environment.
Thanks,
Bob

All you have to do to test servlets is to install a web server (that supports servlets) on your machine, Tomcat is the most widely used and it's free.
Then you can start the server and go to the local url with your browser (http://localhost:8080) and you have a complete client-server environment on your machine.

My limited understanding is that there are two main tests you can go for. The first is the Programmer certification, which tests your knowledge of the Java language itself, so you're asked questions about very specific things about the language syntax and such. I think these questions are stupid, because they serve no practical purpose, and some questions are more of a test of your memory.
Then you can take the Developer certification, which is focused more on evaulating and writing programs.
I haven't taken either, but there are some good resources for preparing for these tests.

www.jcert.org has the information laid out a little better. I picked up Java without a formal course and I had about the same specs as you (although I had done a fair amount of c++ work). I would suggest the Java book by van der Linden (I know I'm not spelling the name right). I think it's called Just Java 2. Also Thinking in Java by Eckel has gotten good recommendations. For exam prep, the Exam Cram book by Brogden is highly recommended, but it won't teach you OO.

  • I need to know how to get Firefox 3 back???? My online college course requires me to have that version and I upgraded to 4 without knowing! HELP!

I upgraded to version 4 and now I am having difficulty with my online college course. They require me to use version 3, and I need to be able to do my classwork. Please help!

First, make a backup of your computer for safekeeping. To back up Firefox, see [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+your+information Backing up your information].
Next, download and save Firefox 3.6 to your desktop for future installation. http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all-older
Close Firefox 4, and uninstall it. Do not remove your personal data and settings, just the program.
Then finally you can reinstall Firefox 3.6. Unless you have installed an incompatible add-on, it should pick up where you left off. If there are serious issues, please post back with details.
Note: I haven't actually tried this myself!

  • I completed a quiz for an online tax course and get a message that I was not connected to the internet when I tried to submit my answers, but I am connected.

I know I am connected to the internet, because I can access email and other websites. Is there a setting in Firefox that is preventing the results from being transmitted back? The quiz is administered by Questiomark Perception. The online tax course is offered by Liberty Tax Service

  • Online study course, ebooks available .azw3, .epub and .mobi.  Will any of these be read by Ibooks?

Online study course is offering ebooks instead of online.  Versions of ebooks are azw3, epub and mobi.  Does Ibooks read any of these versions?
    Thanks Sandy

iBooks does. I use Dropbox to transfer my .epub/.mobi files, just upload them, access them on the iPad, then share it to Books.

Thanks; starting FireFox in safe mode and disabling all add-ons did solve the problem; however, a new problem has emerged. To re-enable the add-ons, you need to open up and use the add-ons control panel through FireFox. Any attempt to do so causes the FireFox add-on control page to close immediately.

  • Online Java and Flash Games

I have had this problem forever and I'd love to know if there's a solution.
On Safari, Firefox, and Opera I simply cannot play online games.
Flash games run disgustingly slow on all three web browsers, but still function. Java games, however, simply crash. An example is Pogo's online java games - the chat applet will load, the game will load and instantly crash upon completion. It closes the pop-up window, though the rest of the browser pages/tabs are fine. I'd really like to know if there is a solution, I already repaired my disk permissions, rebooted, etc etc. Note: Websites created entirely in Flash function perfectly fine, though they lag a bit.
    I'm on a 1 GHz PowerBook G4 with 1 MB L3 cache and 768 MB SDRAM, on Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Interesting fix. Being new to Macs I am not sure how that happened to you. I checked my Safari's info and Open with Rosetta was already unchecked. It's not that I cannot completely play Java games on Pogo, but if the game window does not crash, the game table will be blank and the chat text area will be shown, or the chat text area will be blank while the game table shows up.
It is frustrating. Still, I think it is more to do with the developers and web designers than with our out of the box settings. In comparison, the majority of Windows PC's can play games on Pogo, Yahoo, MSN, etc., without much more than downloading and install ActiveX.
If a Windows PC and a Mac both have the same version of Java installed, and all required platform updates are installed, respectively, what common sense reasoning would be behind the conflict that either platform would have with interacting with a Java based online gaming site?
The coders do not write for the lesser number of site traffic. Hard to swallow, but it is my honest opinion. Still, I gave up frustrations I could count on when I shut down my PC for the last time and I do not intend to allow a lack of gaming to get me down as a new Mac user.

  • Is there going to be any more online training courses released soon for BC? Anywhere?

Is there going to be any more online training courses released soon for BC? Anywhere? I'm seriously baffled by the lack of educational meterial out there. ALL of the adobe tutorials are out of date and the subjects are on small fragments of the whole platform. No complete training packages but one out there. I don't mind paying for it but I need a full and complete online training process, experience that isn't all over the place. I can't even find any books that are on the current version of BC.
Why is there a serious lack of traning out there for BC? I just can't figure it out.

  • Do week-long java courses help to understand java &  get a job?

i tried searching for this topic before posting, but "courses" "classes" & "instruction" come up with a lot that has nothing to do with the topic at hand. :)
like many others, i'm teaching myself out of a book (Deitel). so far i've been able to understand the material and create programs based on the exercises. however, i'm now into the meat of OOP with superclass, subclasses, how they interact and the like and i'm having a rough go of it. i can diagram and understand the abstract concept, but when i'm faced with an actual program example i have a difficult time following the interactions between classes.
i'm considering taking one of those 5 day classes, but am wary of how much they will actually be able to cover in detail (not to mention the $$). has anyone here taken one of those classes and found them to be of great benefit to learning the OOP portion of Java? did it give you enough understanding to obtain an entry-level job?
btw, i'm doing a pro bono project for a small company to get some real world experience. (i've heard that suggestion many times in regards to obtaining one's "experience" w/o a job)
thank you all very much for your help.

I took a week long course to learn Java. It worked I did learn the basics of Java but I did already know how to program in C and VB at the time. I found the AWT section of the class to be very valuable, cosidering I mostly write GUI. And the concepts of AWT mostly all apply to swing so that didn't set me back at all. Depending on the school it may help you to understand OOP. But be careful because most schools progress the class at the skill level of the majorty. So if you have 15 people in the class and 9 of them know nothing about programing your probably going to spend the week learning what a variable and a while loop do, you all pay the same tuition and they would rather 6 of you leave then 9 of you leave. If you have some prior programming knowledge I would recomend finding a class that caters to that.
