Online photo editors crash Safari
Hiya,
I've been trying to upload photos to a few online photo editing sites like PicMonkey, Befunky, Pixlr and Pizap, but every time I start to upload, it crashes Safari. This is the last error report I got, if that's any help in identifying the problem... Thanks in advance for your help!

0x96c52000 - 0x96c60ffd libz.1.dylibAny 411 on this issue yet, folks?
Discovered definitely today I'm having identical issue to OP.
Initially, I wasn't sure. Since downloading Safari 6.1 (running Mac OS X 10.7.5 on a late 2007 Macbook), I hadn't used any of the customary in-browser/web-based photo editors I use until yesterday. Even then, I wasn't certain the "new and improved" Safari was the problem because I was experimenting with sites I don't normally use -- EWC Presenter, Kizoa, Animoto, et al. Hence, I assumed the non-functionality issues were with them and not at this end.
However, today, I used a trusty old friend, Pixlr. The process seemed to run smoothly while I was editing the photos. Yet, despite the site indicating via their usual pop-up window that the edited photos were being downloaded to the desktop, I got nothing. Nada, zip, zero. Tried again with a different image. Same problem: all functions seem a go, until I opt to d/l the edited photo to desktop. No image d/l'd. A complete, thorough search of all files, visible and invisible results in vapor.
Summarizing the issue:
~~ Safari 6.1 (and I'll assume Safari 7, too) will allow a user to log into web-based/in-browser image editors, but then at some point that apparently varies from site to site, the functions within the editor page cease to respond.
In other words, the new and improved Safari is **not** playing nicely with image editors.
The table is open for discussion! -
O.T. Picnik Online Photo Editor
' Online photo editing made fun. With Picnik you can quickly edit all your online photos from one place. It's the easiest way on the Web to fix underexposed photos, remove red-eye, or apply effects to your photos. '
It contains some neat one-click effects.
http://www.picnik.com/Here's another article about Adobe Online:
http://news.zdnet.com/2100-3513_22-6164836.html
Well, now we'll have a place to send someone who is a borderline troll who complains that Elements is too hard to learn...and why can't Elements be as easy as brand x.
BTW, this isn't referencing anyone currently posting...I'm thinking of past trolls.

I need to build a Flex/Flash app to do some photo editing.
The app needs to be embedded on a HTML page. The functionality is
fairly restricted: brightness, contrast, crop, "zoom", etc.
Do you guys know of any examples for this online? I haven't
been able to find anything.
Thanks in advance. Those are excellent examples of online photo editing
applications, but I need something that I can tailor to my design
needs and actually embed on the page. Basically, I'm looking for
some articles, or article, that discuss building a photo editing
app from scratch. -
what to buy? I want to a small amount of product photo editing, build websites, and do some product label graphics. 74 years old and do not want to do the Cloud thing online.
Well, the web site building we can get out of the way rather easily: You cannot build websites with any Photoshop related applications. Adobe has other applications for that.
You can still buy the full version of Photoshop CS6 with a perpetual license—no monthly payments and you own it. $700 for the standard version, $1,000 for the extended version.
The Photographer's deal gives you a subscription to both Photoshop and Lightroom for $10 per month, but you never get to own the software. The moment you stop paying, the software ceases to work.
The Cloud thing is not really on-line. It resides on your computer. It only has to call the mother ship once a month or so.
Then there's the bargain-basement priced, emasculated Photoshop Elements, with some hand-holding features.
I'm a septuagenarian too, but then I've been using computers for decades, Photoshop seriously for over twelve years. Photoshop is a professional level application that makes no apologies for its very long and steep learning curve.
Depending on exactly how much editing you need to do to those products shots, you may be satisfied with Ps Elements mentioned above.
There are trial versions for all of the above. -
What is the best way to use a SSD for Photoshop/photo editing?
Computer hardware newbie here: I do a significant amount of photo editing work and for a very long time I've experienced Photoshop, Bridge and Photomatix crashing constantly (usually due to insufficient RAM) or just generally taking forever (Bridge took forever to load the thumbnail/preview extractions in a folder full of images, Photoshop took forever to save images and Photomatix took ages to load/merge a set of bracketed photos). Here are the typical error messages I'd get: http://pastebin.com/J9byczse
As a professional photographer, constantly running into that sort of thing is quite aggravating, so to hopefully avoid ever having to deal with that again I invested in a new custom built computer. It's Windows 7 Professional 64 bit with 32GB of RAM and a 240GB SSD; I'm using the 240GB SSD as my boot drive/OS, all of my programs are installed there, and the page file. My photos and data are stored on several HDDs. I have yet to install any of my photo editing software (Photoshop CS6 Extended, Lightroom, Photomatix etc) to the new computer yet since I'd like some advice first.
My basic question is this: what is the best way to take advantage of the SSD (and the computer in general) when it comes to my photo editing software?
Specifically...
1. If I have a folder of photos I'm working on, should I move it to the SSD and then work on them from there in order to take advantage of the speed of the SSD? Would this make any difference in terms of speed if the photos are located on the SSD vs. an internal/external HDD?
2. Most of what I've read online seems to recommend two separate SSDs, one for installing/booting the apps and one for cache/scratch. Does it matter if I use my 240GB SSD for both?
3. This is a fairly new computer and the SSD is already almost half full (102GB used, 120GB free) *WITHOUT* any of my photo editing software installed yet. I'm concerned about how fast that remaining 120 GB may fill up. As it fills up will I lose the speed advantage of the SSD vs. a regular HDD?
4. Sort of similar to #3, but should I bother moving any of my other non-photo editing programs/caches off of the SSD to a HDD and would there be any major difference in the speed/lifespan of the SSD if I did so? It's mostly Firefox and Chrome and their caches that I'm concerned may be a problem if they remain on the SSD.
Thanks for any help!If you have an SSD you can run the cache and programs on the same drive. However, many recommend a scratch disk size of 100-200 gigs so that will not work here unless you opt for a larger SSD. Otherwise an internal spinner is recommended that does not contain the program files, or idealy any other files that may want to get acessed at same time (only one read/write head per drive).
With 32 gig of RAM you may not need the constant use of the scratch drive unless working on large images with lots of layers. So see no advantage to moving folder to SSD for temp work environment.
From what I read the new crop of SSD do not have the wear problems of the older versions. -
After I (automatically) updated to Mozilla Firefox version 29.0.1, the online photo album crreator of Webprint.nl no longer displayes the photo's that I uploaded.
The photo's are displayed again when I use an older Firefox browser (version 28.*) from an another computer. This is my old (WIndows Vista) computer that I use when my new Windows 7 computer has problems.
It looks like the new Firefox has a problem with Adobe Flash player 13,0,0,214; which is the newest version according to Adobe.
Please help!

Mac Mini for Parents (photo editing)
Hello all and thank you in advance.
My parents (for reference in their mid 60s) have finally decided to come to the mac universe. They are asking for assistance in buying a computer. I was thinking of getting them a mac mini.
In regards to their needs, they are pretty light computer users. They like to facetime, make photo collages, web surf, email, etc. Though I should mention my dad needs to have a virtual PC to log into the VA (was going to use VirtualBox). Also they would like to start doing some photo editing, note that they are very much an amateurs and will not being running super complicated workflows (he has a Nikon D700 (12MP full frame) with a ton of RAW files he has never yet bothered with). In terms of photo software, I was thinking either Aperture or the upcoming Photos app and possibly Pixelmator.
Cost is a consideration, but if the performance increase is great enough it will also be weighted justly.
I am debating between a 2014 version vs a 2012 that I would upgrade myself (add a SDD to make a fusion drive and max out the ram). If I did go with a 2012, would the cost difference to get a i7 quad core be worth it, or would the dual core i5 be more than sufficient?
thanks!Various points:
1. You can't really diy a fusion drive. You can build a logical volume that spans two physical drives, and HDD and SSD, but that doesn't make a fusion drive, so you don't get all the benefits. Also, be aware of the issues with TRIM on Yosemite with 3rd part SSDs (short version: Yosemite doesn't allow Trim Enabler etc to load the system extensions they need to work - Apple might change this in future, but who knows)
2. For software, I recommend Aperture (even though it's being replaced by Photos). It has two big benefits: it handles storing the pictures, with all kinds of tagging and search options so you can find them again; and it does non-destructive editing - if you make a change to a picture, you retain the original in case you change your mind or want a different version. Pixelmator is fantastic value too.
3. You can run a virtual machine fine on a 2013 mini (I do it - Windows 7 via Parallels). If all it is is some light online stuff, no issue. But it's true that the newer minis are somewhat slicker.
4. In general, provided you have the RAM (8GB), any mini will do - assuming they have a decent monitor with the right connections. If they want to get serious with photos, they absolutely need a decent monitor. -
Resolution & "save as" ? for online photo book
I am making an online photo book through Snapfish. When I am done editing my images using Elements, I go to resize and make it about a 4X6 size with a dpi of 200 or so and "save as" a Jpeg. When I go to Snapfish to put my album together, I sometimes get an error messages as I try to place an image into one of the slots in the photobook. It cautions that the image has low resolution and will not produce a good image when printed. Should I avoid making the image smaller, or should I leave it as is? Should I be saving to Jpeg format? What process do you use when resizing and saving for this situation or any print you're having made? Thanks.
Snapfish recommends a minimum of 1639 X 1233 pixels. I think I've made the mistake of downsizing my images to 4X6 instead of leaving them the original size. I know if I email I have to make the image smaller and also lower the ppi to 72. When you are editing an image to print to a standard 4X6, do you change the size of the image or leave it as is with a high resolution of 250 or more? Can I go back once an image has been reduced and try to make it larger? Or, will the image never return to the quality it once was?

Hi
I have a Mac which I purchased in July 2010 I’m sure it’s running snow leopard. Will I be better off upgrading to the latest OS or staying as I am? The reason I ask is, I am looking into getting some photo editing software either Aperture or Photoshop Lightroom (is Aperture better for Mac?) to move up from the next level of iPhoto. Now I have never had a problem with my Mac in the three and a half years since I have had it and don’t want to do anything that will slow it down or mess it up. Any suggestions would be most welcome. My Mac is: iMac, Intel Core i3, 3.06 GHz, 1 Processor, 1 Core, L2 Cache (per core) 256KB, L3 Cache 4MB, Memory 4GB, Mac OS X version 10.6.8Aperture and Lightroom are made by Apple and Adobe, respectively. Both are higher end photo management apps for cataloging your photo library. As you note, both are quite a step up from iPhoto.
You can do some editing in both, but nothing like an actual image editor. Photoshop, as Klaus1 mentioned, is expensive. For around $70 online (like at Amazon.com), you can get Photoshop Elements. About 80% of what the full PS app can do for far less. PS Elements does remove CMYK color support.
Pixelmator does a lot for not a whole lot of bucks. GIMP is an open source editor that does much of what Photoshop does, and it's free. Like PS, GIMP has a large learning curve. -
Online Photo Printing Format PSE4 XP
Since jpeg and some other formats are "lossy" and thus lose some quality each time they are opened, edited and closed again I convert all original images to .tif before editing and I also archive them as .tif. (Opening and closing jpeg without editing does not degrade the quality)
However some online photo labs (Walgreen) require only jpeg or bmp formats (which are much smaller file size and faster to upload/download than tif). If I convert the tif to jpeg, bmp, etc and have the photos printed have I lost any quality in the process when I reformat my archived images back to tif?
JackTh eloss of quality occurs when you save to JPEG, as that's when the compression occurs. So, if you camera delivers JPEGs, you shoul dopen those, work on them and save as TIFF or PSD. Then, create a temporary JPEG as and when you need one. [If you have PSE 3/4 on Win, Organizer's File/Export is ideal for this.]

Photo editing extensions always seem to be buggy.
Strangely I haven't heard anyone talking about this, so first of all please let me know if I am the only one who is experiencing this, but iOS 8 photo editing extensions always seem very buggy to me. It doesn't matter who made them - Litely, Afterlight, Squareready, etc all seem to have problems. I often get a spinning progress indicator which never ends after editing and need to force quit photos and start over. Other times I get the spinning progress indicator immediately before I start editing and I can't even do anything. iOS 8.1 does not seem to clear it up. About 50% of the time when editing via 3rd party photo edit extensions I experience some sort of hang up which requires me to force quit Photos.
Are all photo editing extensions just buggy or is apple's implementation buggy?I have this, too. I've look online and it doesn't seem to be a common problem. I've got a 6 Plus. I had the same issue on my 5s, though. What have you got? I'm using the iCloud Photo Library beta… I was wondering if that might be related.

Is it legal to sell photos edited in trial and beta verisons of Photoshop?
I recently downloaded the new CS6 beta version of photoshop and since I am interested in stock photography I was wondering if it's legal and not againts Adobe's rules to sell photos edited in trial and beta versions of Photoshop? I mean, since you haven't bought them and just trying them out.
I really haven't found info about it, yet. Adobe terms and policy are little overwhelming
Thanks.
p.s. I hope I asked the question on the right placeThe last time that I read the EULA, the only restriction on commercial or production work was on beta/pre-release software. So you could use the CS5 trial but not the CS6 beta.
See section 4.a . here:

Does windows7 come with photo editing
I thought this high end computer comes with all kinds of photo editing software, or maybe i just can't find it.Can anybody help
Like all previous versions of Windows, Windows 7 has the standard "Paint" program. However, for photo editing, you can download Microsoft's Live Photo Gallery as part of the Live Essentials package. Personally, I think it does a good job for basic photo edits and fixes, but the entire "Live" experience can be a bit annoying (log-in/user account required to access all the live features, but photo gallery will work without a Live account). To get it (and other Live Essentials programs) go to www.microsoft.com and select the "Downloads" section under the search bar, or just search for Live Essentials on the Microsoft website.
For more advanced editing/users, you may also like "Gimp 2", an open source graphics/photo editing software solution similar to Adobe Photoshop. Gimp 2 is available through www.gimp.org , along with additional plug-ins to expand the features.
For my truly important photo editing, I use Adobe Lightscribe 3. It is great for perfecting photos, but it is pricey.
Live Photo Gallery will do most, if not all, photo edits the typical consumer would use, it is easy to use, and it's free. -
I am looking for a good photo editing software, only editing, not sharing etc
any recommendation for a good photo editing software for starters, only to enhance picture, play arounf with colours in black and white background etc.
In order of price here are some suggestions:
Seashore (free)
The Gimp (free)
Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
Acorn ($50 approx)
Pixelmator ($50 approx)
Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
