Open fce 3.5 project in fcp 5.1

Hi Gang,
can anyone help me with this simple question... can i cut a project in fce3.5 and then email the project file to my colleague and have them open it up in their fcp 5.1?
we do this at the moment between fcp5.1 and fcp5.1.4, and it works well.
what are people's experiences with transferring project files between the two apps?
many thanks.

now this: can i import and export edls into fce? does fce have a reconnect media function?
i'm a fcp user at my work looking to start out small in fce at home - what are the big differences i will notice between the two programmes?
thanks.

  • Importing FCE 2.03 PROJECT into FCP HD 4.5

    Hi All.
I have a small project edited in Final Cut Express on my laptop. I wish to import it onto my new shiney G5 DUAL on which I have FCP HD 4.5. I am not using the HD selection, the FCE project is just standard digital imported files.
Can any kind soul offer any guidance.
Happy Easter to you all from sunny Ireland.

  • Can't open an FCE project in FCP

I got FCE 4.0.1 and have now upgraded to FCP 6.0.1. When I try to open my existing FCE project in FCP, I get a message that says, " File's format is too new for this version of application."
I just bought the FCS, so I assume it's the latest version of the program.
    Any ideas?

The latest version of Final Cut Pro is 6.0.5.
Use the software updater to get to that version.
My guess is the 6.0.1 was released before FCE 4.0.1.
"In general, Final Cut Pro can open a Final Cut Express project if it was last modified in a version of Final Cut Express that was released before the version of Final Cut Pro that you are using."

  • Opening FCE 4 project in FCP 7? Is it possible?

    Hi All
I am on the verge of buying FCE 4 to rough-cut a doc project that will likely end up being finished on FCP. Budget is tight at the moment and my current 'field' machine is too slow to run FCP 7 properly.
I know that FCE cannot export an edit decision list, but that FCE 4 projects can be opened in FCP 6, according to Tom Wolsky (see http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/8/995580).
I assumed that FCE 4 projects could thus be opened in FCP 7 -- but this website http://www.answers.com/topic/final-cut-pro says that FCE 4 is NOT compatible with FCP 7.
Can anyone advise on this? Is it possible to rough-cut a project in Apple Intermediate Codec in FCE 4 and then open this project in FCP 7, re-import footage as ProRes, and finish?
I look forward to your responses!

    Hi Tom
I've split this question into two parts:
    A) I'm not entirely sure what the implications of FCE 4 losing 'all timecode' when converting (in this case AVCCAM .mts) files to AIC on import are. Apparently the original timecode is still there -- it's just not visible unless you use a filter like FCE Timecode Display (http://web.mac.com/piero.fiorani/PieroFFCE_Effect/TimecodeDisplay.html).
I'm on a steep learning curve here, so please excuse me if I sound a bit dumb, but does the fact that AIC 'loses timecode' mean that if I open an FCE 4 project file in FCP 7 and try to re-capture media (and convert to ProRes while recapturing) from my original AVCCAM files using FCP 7, that FCP 7 will not know where to find the clips to re-capture?
    B) I'm also not sure what you mean by capturing media as DV anamorphic downconverted to retain timecode. Presumably this does not apply to AVCHD footage, as you have indicated elsewhere in this forum (and chapter 16 of the FCE users manual says) that the only transcode (ingest) option with FCE is to convert AVCHD footage (including AVCCAM footage) to full-size AIC? Please clarify.
    Thanks for all your help!

  • Is it possible to start a project in FCE and finish it in FCP?

    Hi all!
I am at home trying to work on a school project and was wondering if anyone had experience with working on a project in FCE then sending it to FCP to finish.
    Is this possible?
    Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum.
You can open your FCE project in FCP, but, once you save it in FCP, you can't take it back to FCE.

  • How to open FC Express project in FCP

Using FCE 3.5 and need to open the project in FCP 5.0.4.
At the moment I get a window telling me:
"File format is too new for this operation"
Checked Software Update to see if there was a FCP upgrade I was missing, but doesn't seem to be one.
If this has already been posted I apologise and please direct me to it.
    Thanks Mac People

You probably need v 5.1. It is not a downloadable version.
To move from 5.0 to 5.1 is considered a Crossgrade and the forms and details for how it works can be found on the Apple website - FCP Studio pages under updates. I believe the cost is ~$200 but may have forgotten the exact price.
    good luck.

  • Open FCExpress projects with FCP

    Hi Mac friends,
I once had FCExpress. Not any more.
I´ve all FCExpress projects and all the media stored on an external FW hard drive.
Can I open this projects now with FCP and save them as new FCP Projects in order to use and preserve this works?
If so, what´s the proper way to do it?
    Thank you very much.
    L.

You can open FCE projects with FCP. You will not be able to open the updated projects from FCP on FCE.
Just do a "Save As..." to make a copy.

  • FCE 4 Project to FCP 5

    Hi there,
I am trying to move a project started in FCE 4 to FCP 5, I understand about moving the media files but when I try to open the FCE 4 project in FCP 5 it will not open - general error (41). Is this because FCP 5 is too old? can the project be exported from FCE 4 as an XML? can FCE 4 export XML's?
    Can anybody help?

    Hi Tom
Thanks for your quick reply, sorry for my slow one. I took the project to a friend with FCP 7, it opened fine, so I then exported it as an XML which enabled me to open it in my FCP 5, although it seems to have lost most of the tape names/numbers.
On a separate subject, as I had to reconnect the media, do you know why subclips do not reconnect automatically when the relevant master clip is reconnected? Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks

  • Can't open a project in FCP 7

    Hello:
I can't open a FCP 7 project. Every time I try to open it, the project get stuck at 2% and then I received  a notice that FCP 7 is not responding. The project is at an external hard drive. I run some tests and the drive is fine. I can open other projects that are stored in the same drive, but not that particular one.
Although I have the project back up at another external drive, there is some information that wasn't backed up and I need to retrieve it urgently.
What should I do? Could it be a corrupted file?
    Thanks for your help!!
    Rolando

First thing to try is resetting your preferences.  The best way is using Digital Rebellion's preference manager.  It's free
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Digital Rebellion also has a Project Repair App, part of Pro Maintenance Tools.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/promaintenance/
    There's a free trial.
If these two things fail, there may be a corrupt clip causing the problems.  If you take your media drive offline and try launching the project, it may load.  You can then slowly reconnect the media until you find the problem.  Sometimes, just going thru this process will solve it.
You can also try an autosave version of the project.  FCP automatically saves back up versions of the project as you work on it.  The default interval is 30 minutes.  Just do a finder search for autosave to find the folder.

  • Newbie Question: Why can't I open my iMovie project in FCP?

    Hello all--
I'm sure some variation of this question has been posted a bajillion times but I can't seem to find the answer. At this point I feel like a damsel in distress. Rescue me?
I've been working with iMovie for about two years now and I've recently been learning Final Cut Pro to up the ante on my videos. However, when I tried to import an iMovie project into FCP yesterday, it didn't quite work. Let me explain what I did and what happened:
    1) I exported my (edited but previously unpublished) iMovie project by clicking Share>Export Final Cut XML
    2) I opened FCP and clicked File>Import>XML and then selected the XML, leaving all the boxes checked
    3) FCP imported the project as a sequence; however, the entire sequence reads "Media Offline" in the Canvas.
    4) I clicked File>Reconnect Media and the list of offline files is overwhelming. I tried my luck by clicking "locate" and going to my imovie folders to find the clips, but even when the browser allowed me to select a clip, when I double clicked it, nothing in the sequence changed - it's all still "offline."
I really don't know much about media management, I'll admit - I'm wondering if maybe iMovie saves edited clips in a folder other than the events or originals folder - maybe the edited clips become "temporary items"? I know I have a ridiculous amount of imovie cache and temporary items and I never touch them because there are just so many of them and I don't want to mess anything up. But could the files that FCP claims to be "offline" in fact be located in these "temporary" folders? I mean, I've looked everywhere else on my hard drive and nothing is working! Sorry, I am probably just confusing myself MORE (and you), but maybe SOMEONE will know what in the world I should do
    Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the family. I don't think many of us have ever used iMovie so your post might be more quickly answered in that forum.
My suggestion is to forget trying to move the project. Rebuild it in FCP. The exercise will teach you much more about your new software than fighting XML.
If you don't feel like doing that, try a smaller iMovie project, something with only two or three clips and one dissolve.
The larger issue is probably how iMovie stores its captured media which is completely different from how FCP does it. And the format is different. FCP does not, IIRC, view iMovie's default dvstream codec. You will want to export your movie clips as DV.

  • Cannot open projects in FCP - "General Error"

Well, just upgraded to OS 10.4.10, and FCP to 5.1 on my 867 quicksilver. several external lacie hard drives. 1.5 GB ram. after the archive and install of the OS, I could not open projects in FCP 4.5 due "General Error". I upgraded to FCP 5.1 and experience same issue.
at the time of OS upgrade, i also changed my second internal drive for a larger one, and put the original one, with its original name, in an external firewire housing. It appears on my desktop and is included in the FCP system preferences, so i assume that is not a problem.
    any ideas?

I updates to 5.1.4, and issue turned into "project file unreadable or from more recent version of FCP" when file is actually from older version. THIS problem was solved by disconnecting all external drives, opening 4.5 project and updating to 5.1.4, reconnecting and setting external drives in FCP system pref, and then reconnecting media.
I have had this problem also happen with a project i already successfully opened in 5.1.4 ...turns out i had opened it with some network drives on my desktop and then removed them. I put one back, it opened successfully, I got rid of the network drive and resaved and now it opens fine. In other words the message "project unreadable or from a later version of Final Cut" really indicates there is some drive rooting problem, not a problem with project file or what generation it is.
hope that helps anyone out there. sure is a relief to be working again.

  • Is it possible to open FCE projects in the latest version of FCPX?

Is it possible to open Final Cut Express 4 projects in the latest version of Final Cut Pro X (10.0.4)?
I have 18 projects on my hard drive, and I'm concecrned about their compaitibility in the future. Should I leave them as they are, and I'll be able to import them into Final Cut Pro X, or should I first convert them to Final Cut Pro 7 projects?

You can't open FCE projects in FCPX. If you can open a copy in FCP7 and export an XML file.

  • Issues opening projects in FCP 7

I am having issues opening up my project in FCP 7...when I go to open a project, only the browser window opens and I can't seem to open the timeline and canvas...when I go to the Window tab, Canvas and Timeline are not highlighted as options for me, how do I get those windows open?
Also, I imported .MOV movie files into Final Cut that opened up in my viewer window and played fine on my timeline the other day, now I get a "General Error" "Not enough memory" warning that comes up when I try to open, is there a reason for this and a way around it?
    Thanks!

Unless you are planning to output the timeline to tape, you can turn off the dropped frame warning. It is not a problem if the canvas is dropping frames while you edit as it is only a reference display of the timeline.
In Final Cut Pro, go to the menu Final Cut Pro > User Preferences and on the General Tab, make sure Report Dropped Frames during playback is UNCHECKED:
    RavenF wrote:
but when I go to the "RT" drop down menu, the only option I see is: Play Base Layer Only.  The other options that are normally there are not coming up.
What are your sequence settings? Click anywhere on the timeline and type Command + 0 {zero} to see your sequence settings. Either report those settings, or take a screen shot of the sequence settings and post that here.
Are you attempting to edit to a timeline set to an H.264 codec?

  • Opening FCP HD 5 project, on FCP HD 4.5??

    Hey everyone,
Is there a way to open a FCP HD 5 project on FCP HD 4.5? Maybe theres a way of saving it?
All I need to do basically is take it in to uni so I can use their machines to transfer my 'masterpiece' onto VHS, so was planning to use the 'Print to Video' option to do it, but because I have version 5 at home it wont let me open it on the version 4.5 systems there.
If I cant do this, is there any other way to get it to VHS? maybe just saving it as a quicktime file and doing it from there??
    Thanks!

    Two of the best options:
    1) Dump it back to tape and let them import it off the tape. But NOT VHS.
    2) Export as a QT self contained file, but depending on the length, you'll need to put it on an external FW drive to take over there.
    Third way:
But you'll have to do some guessing on proper technique.
You need to get the media all in one palce.
You can use media manager to export used clips with handles to a new project. And save to the FW drive.
Once you get a new project created you can do export and XML of that new project. Then have the FCP4.5 folks open the xml and relink all the media back to the FW drive. This way they can still edit if they need.
    Good luck,
    CaptM
