Open File in Acrobat or Reader

I have Acrobat 8 and Reader X installed on my PC (Vista Business). After installing updates for both programs over the past few months I have lost the default toolbar on documents I download from the web and need to use F8 to get a toolbar. In addition, last week I had an "accessibility" screen pop up when I opened a document and took me through a number of set-up screens so that my documents no longer open up the same size and also appear fuzzy until I manually enlarge them, and finally, I notice that my documents always open with "Acrobat Standard" rather than Reader. So now I'm wondering if Acrobat and Reader conflict with each other. If I have Acrobat do I really need Reader? Is there a way to force Reader to open the document instead of Acrobat? If I get rid of Reader will this fix all the issues I have (no toolbar, fuzzy looking docs)? I don't know who makes the decisions to "update" but everything WAS working fine until the updates.

It never has been a problem to work with Acrobat and Reader and I work since years with that configuration.
The simple solution is to install Acrobat first and then newer Reader versions.
The last installed version will take over.
With the File Association you can tell windows, which program should start, if you click on a pdf.
For using it in explorer you have to change a registry key. That has been published here thousend times.

    Is that even possible?
    Please let me know. Thanks.

I am not sure I understand your question but I think you are looking for this.
    1. Right click on the PDF file.
    2. Click on "Open With". You will see Adobe Acrobat in the list.
    3. Click on it.
    Alternatively,
1a. On Windows, open the Start Menu (bottom left of the screen).
1b. On Mac, open the Spotlight (top right of the screen).
    2. Type Acrobat. You will see Adobe Acrobat in the list.
    3. Click on it. Acrobat will open.
    4. Goto File -> Open. Locate the file and click Open.
If Acrobat is not displayed anywhere, it means that the software is not installed on your machine.
    To verify:
1a. On Windows, open Control Panel, then open Programs and Features.
1b. On Mac, open a Finder Window, then click Applications on the left.
    2. Look for Adobe Acrobat in the list.
If Acrobat is not present, download and install from the website http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html or using Adobe Download Assistant.

  • Browser opening pdfs in acrobat not reader

    Hi,
I have a trial version of acrobat on my computer, which has now expired, i also have reader 9 on here, however, whenever I try to open a PDF in a browser, it keeps trying to open it using acrobat, I need it to open them in reader instead.
I can not figure out how to do this, any help would be greatly appreciated
Im using windows 7 & both Ie and firefox.
    Thanks for your help

You may need to change the file type association for .PDF  file types.
    From: http://www.winvistaclub.com/t19.html
To set File Associations in Windows 7 or Vista, Open Control Panel > Control Panel Home > Default Programs > Set Associations. Select a file type in the list and click Change Program.
You will be displayed a list of Programs along with a Description and the Current Default. You can click on the Change program to set or change the current defaults.
Alternatively, you can also Right click the file whose association you want to change > Properties > General tab > Type Of File > Change > Choose a program from the list or recommended or other programs or else click Browse to select one.

  • Unable to open files associated with Adobe Reader - program goes into a loop

i am unable to open any file associated with adobe reader or adobe pro.  when i double-click the file, adobe reader opens up but it goes into a loop.
adobe reader opens, then a progress window opens, as if the file will open but adobe closes and opens again and the same cycle repeats itself until i manually close the program.
    any advice?
    update:
i can open regular .PDF files when i double-click the icon and i can also open .PDF files when i open adobe reader first and then choose open file.  it's just the .FDF files that are the problem (so far).
the file in question happens to be an .FDF extension, which is an internet generated form. i attached a screen shot of the screen that pops up, goes away, and pops up again that creates the loop.
the white out section is the server name where the file was saved to.  but i also get the same symptoms when i am in internet explorer, hit the generate form button.

    hey ankit,
sorry i didn't see a notification that you replied to this discussion.
"1. Generate a new PDF and a FDF file. Try opening the same and see if it behaves the same way."
yes, it does behave the same way, it's just a continuous loop until i have to kill the process.
"2. Check if you have access to the PDF that is being used by the particular FDF."
by this do you mean the correct permissions?  if that is what you mean, then yes, the permissions are set correctly.
"3. If possible, please send me the FDF and the associated PDF that is behaving in this way on your system."
i really wish i could but the information in the form is sensitive and cannot be sent.
as an update though, i reimaged the customer's workstation, installed Adobe Reader 10.1.1 and it worked perfectly (finally).  HOWEVER, after about two weeks the same symptoms returned!

  • Saving in Acrobat 9 and Opening file in Acrobat 8... text wrap does not work

I work with a client who has Acrobat 8, I use Acrobat 9. I am saving a pdf that has form fields that need to wrap text and scroll. They have the properties of "multi-line" and "scroll text" already checked, and when I test it on my computer, the text wraps and scrolls, as it should. However, when my client tries to type inside the form field, the text will not wrap, even though it is wrapping on my version of acrobat. How can I get the text to wrap on my client's version (8)?

Do you know of any solutions to my problem? To clarify, my client uses Windows XP Professional, Adobe 8 and Internet Explorer 7

when I am open file with adobe Pro and reader the resolution in my computer failing, change the resolution from 1920x1200 to 800x600. my video card is nvidia quadro 2000. w7 & 32 bits

    Hi fabiangs,
I'm not sure that I follow. Are you saying that when you open a PDF file in Acrobat or Reader, that the display resolution changes automatically on your system?
What version of Acrobat/Reader are you using? Do you see this same issue in other files/applications?
I look forward to hearing back from you.
    Best,
    Sara

  • Open file in Sub VI and close in Main VI

    Hi,
    Question:
I am opening a file using a Sub-VI, but i am unable to close it in my main VI. Is there a way of passing the refnum between Sub-VI's ?
Or is there a cleaner way of doing this ?
    Thanks
    GM

Although this can be done, it is not good programming practice to do so.  You should open files in one vi, read/write to them in the same vi or in subvi's, and close the file at the level where it was opened.  This is proper modular programming.  Then you would not need references.  You could just wire the file refnum into your subvi.  Of course this is a general statement.  You could have a very good reason why you are doing it your way.

  • IPhone - MainWindow.xib - ibtool cannot open files of this type

    Hi,
I'm trying to compile the sample MoveMe application and cannot get it to compile. I get the following error:
Description: "MainWindow.xib" could not be handled because ibtool cannot open files of this type.
Failure Reason: ibtool cannot open files of this type.
I have installed the beta3 version of the SDK. I'm new to building iPhone apps, so I may not have supplied all the required info to solve this issue.
    Interface Builder - version 3.1 (644)
    XCode - version 3.1 (Beta)
I tried using "Active SDK" as "SDK at iphoneos2.0" but it couldn't find it:
error: There is no SDK with specified name or path 'iphoneos2.0'
so I am using "Simulator - Aspen 1.2"
    Thanks for any help.

anymore updates on the topic ? done that and still getting the error...

  • When I try to open files in with CS4 I get application was unable to open correctly. Reasons?

When I try to open files in with CS4 I get application was unable to open correctly. Reasons?

Well, it seems to be fine now. I down loaded updates to bridge and CS4 (and various other applications). This seems to have negated the issue.
Just to answer; yes it was happening with all file types. No I don't believe it ever worked before as I would always just open files in camera raw.

  • I cannot open this PDF file in Acrobat 8 Pro or in Acrobat Reader on Windows 7 64-bit

I have a PDF file that I could open on my Windows XP 32-bit laptop in Acrobat 8 Pro or in Acrobat Reader.  I then upgraded to a Windows 7 64-bit laptop.  But now in Win7-64, I cannot open this same file using the same apps (Acrobat 8 Pro & Acrobat Reader XI).
When I try to open it in Acrobat 8, it does not load and instead a popup windows appears saying -
    Adobe Updater
Some components needed to complete this operation are missing but information about them may be available on the Adobe website. Would you like to search the Adobe website for the missing components?
And I can choose either the OK or Quit buttons.  When I click OK, a web browser starts and goes to this website -
    http://www.adobe.com/special/adobe_update_manager/?type=Filter&name=FOPN_foweb&version=0.0 .0.0&lang=en_US&os=Windows&osver=6.1.7601&appid=acrobat8pro-en_US&cpu=intel
    This webpage says -
    Adobe Update Manager
Adobe cannot locate the requested plugin. New plugins will be listed on this page. Currently there are no plugins.
So now I am stuck, no direction to go.  I am left without any solution from Adobe for Acrobat on this file.
When I try to open this PDF file in Reader, it does not load and instead a web browser is spawned loading the webpage -
    http://plugin.fileopen.com/Default.aspx?bhcp=1
This is the FileOpen Plug-in for Adobe Acrobat/Reader, which prompts to -
Please click OK to download the FileOpen Plug-in Installer for Adobe Acrobat/Reader
I click on OK, download and run the Installer file, accept the terms, and installed the FileOpen Client (x64) B928.  Upon completion, it prompts to Finish.  But it does not automatically bring Reader up or try to load the file.  So I try again to load the PDF file into Reader.  But once again, the file does not load and the web browser is spawned loading the same FileOpen Plug-in Installer link.  I click OK again, and start the same FileOpen Client process.  This time, it recognizes that I have FileOpen Client installed, and the window gives me two choices, Repair or Remove.  So since I apparently need this Plug-in, I choose Repair.  The process seems to complete the Repair.  But when I try to load the file, it still brings me back to the FileOpen Plug-in webpage.  So now I am stuck again, and left without any solution from Adobe for Reader on this file.
I tried Adobe support.  But apparently Adobe does not support past releases of their products (Acrobat 8), and also does not give free support for the current version of their free products (Reader XI).
    Can this be fixed?

How is Acrobat 8 not fully Windows 7 compatible?  I see discussions on this Adobe Community saying how Acrobat 8 does work on Windows 7 and with 64-bit.  It appears that if Acrobat 8 is updated to the latest version, then this should fix AA8-Win7 issues.  And I am at the latest AA8 version, 8.3.1.
And how are Acrobat 8 and Reader XI are not compatible?  I have always had Acrobat and Reader installed on the same PC, without ever having any issues.  And Adobe allows the installation of one after the other.  So apparently Adobe allows them both to exist together.  If they are incompatible, then why would Adobe allow them to exist together?
Anyway, I did uninstall the FileOpen Plug-in and the Reader XI, then reinstalled the FileOpen Plug-in.  So now Reader is not installed and only Acrobat 8 is installed.  I then tried to load the PDF file, but I still get the Acrobat 8 error described above.
