"open link in new tab -switch to it immediately" cannot be disabled

When I left click a link, FF 14.01 will switch to the new tab immediately. When I right click and say "open link in new tab", FF won't switch immediately. I have done all the obvious things in tools/options,and have also reset FF to its default state and disabled all add-ons and extensions. Before I do a complete uninstall/reinstall to see if that works, any other ideas?
Is there an entry in the windows 7 registry that would force FF to always switch to the new tab when a link is left clicked? I ask this because I suspect the problem might be malware related. The system is completed clean now, so that is not the problem.

Do you mean Ctrl+left click or just plain left click? I think a plain left click always navigates immediately whether the page opens in the same tab, new window, or new tab. What behavior did you have before, if it was different?

Am I the only one finding this annoying?
I want to know how to switch "open link in new tab" and "open link in new Windows" like it was in Firefox 3.
If you mousehover on a link and press the right mousebutton.

Sara, I started having the same problem yesterday. In my case I was able to remedy it by disabling FasterFox 3.9.81. If you don't have that installed, I would recommend turning off your extensions (one by one), restarting firefox, and testing until you find the offender. Hope that helps!

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:

    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • When I right click and select open link in new tab, it leaves the page I am on and takes me to the first tab to the right

I usually have many tabs open when I read the news, and it is nice to select open links in new tabs while scrolling through a news' home page. Lately, however, Mozilla has been opening the new tab, but switches the page I am viewing to the first tab to the right of the home page. For example, I had ESPN.com open, and then a few Facebook tabs after that to the right. Whenever I would select open link in new tab, the tab I was viewing would switch from ESPN.com to the first Facebook tab to the right, and the new tab would open a little further down the line. Any chance anyone knows how to fix this?

When I right click, and choose 'Open link in new tab', it instead opens the link in a new window. This happened suddenly with seemingly no cause. I have checked and double checked the option "Open new windows in new tabs instead" but it was checked. How can I fix it?

  • Ctrl-Shift-Click to open link in new tab (v10)

I came back to Firefox recently after trying to use Chrome for awhile. I was gratified by my return, except that in the update from v9 to v10, I found that one of my favorite keyboard shortcuts no longer worked as it had.
In v9 and previous, Ctrl-Shift-Click opened a link in a new tab and switched to it immediately. In v10, Ctrl-Shift-Click still opens the link in a new tab, but does not switch to it, even with '''Options: Tabs: When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately''' enabled.
When using the mouse method of opening a link in a new tab, it does switch to it immediately as expected.
I thought I was going to have to live with this (or not), but then found a bit of documentation noting that Ctrl-Click now provides the functionality I was used to.
Great! But on the other hand, backward compatibility with the old functionality would have spared me some temporary disappointment and some extra digging.
BTW, I note in another post several of the reasons why I came back to Firefox from Chrome.

Thanks, Edmeister, that info about the setting reversing the effects of the two key combo's is useful.
Having just installed FF 10 on a fresh installation of Windows, I see that the default setting for '''When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately''' is un-checked, and Ctrl-Shift-Click switches to the new tab as I had come to expect.
But on my own existing installation, that setting is checked. So if your observation about the behavior being uniform across v 8, 9 and 10 is correct, then I guess I must have changed this setting when I upgraded to v.10, or else the setting somehow "slipped" during the upgrade.

  • Firefox 22 /Open link in new tab not working

Just loaded FF22. Sometimes I have a slow connection speed and I need FF to open links in a new tab, so pages do not have to reload.
    On the earlier version.
Say I went to www.google.com and clicked on search link, It would open in a new tab (without right clicking link, and specifying to "Open link in new tab" It would do this on all links automaticly.
Am I missing something here. Do I need to go into about.config to set this. Or go back to an earlier version of FF.

Here's my solution to the problem of making links always open in a new tab. This only applies to Mac OSX tho.
Get [http://blog.boastr.net/downloads-secondbar-bettertouchtool-2/ Better Touch Tool]. (This program creates keyboard and mouse/trackpad gesture shortcuts and it's free/donation BTW)
I set up several shortcuts in Better Touch Tool, but the relevant one here would be "Middleclick" which by default opens a link into a new tab. The gesture I set to do this happens to be three finger tap.
    These are my configured gestures/shortcuts:
four finger swipe down -> sleep display
    three finger tap -> middleclick
three finger double tap -> command-h (minimizes all open windows in the current program)
four finger double tap -> Application Switcher
I also enabled Windows Snapping (which mimics Windows windows snapping) and Windows Moving/Resizing (which the way I have configured it means, if I mouse over a window, then hold the Shift and fn buttons, the window will move around without having to hold the mouse/trackpad button, and if I hold just the fn key, the window will resize).

  • Open link in new tab changing to tab automatically

Before when I right clicked to open a link in a new tab, it would open it but keep me on my current tab. Now it just goes to the new tab every time. This only happens on one of my PCs, even though they're both on the same version.
    I'm running Firefox 27. Thanks.

Adding on to the above post about the "browser.tabs.loadInBackground" there is a second preference that applies to links which ''automatically'' launch a new window, which Firefox ''diverts'' to a new tab. This thread discusses that one in case it's relevant: [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/981073 Since updating to FF 25, "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it immediately." does not work.]

    1. Install the Menu Editor add-on from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/menu-editor/ .
    2. After the installation, go to Firefox> add-ons (or simply use Ctrl+Shift+A)
    3. Go to the Menu Editor "Options"
    4. In the "Main context menu," simply grab the "Open link in New Tab" and place it below the "Open Link in New Window"

  • Safari wont let me open links in new tabs anymore? Please help!?

On my Macbook, I'm using Safari as my browser.
Everything was fine until this morning; suddenly Safari will not give me the option of opening links from one page in another tab in the same window.
For example, if I'm browsing on EBay and want to open a search result in a new tab of the same window, usually when I would right click on my track pad or magic mouse, it would say "Open link in new tab" or "Open link in new window". However, now when I right click, it just says, "Open link" "Open link in new window" and "Copy link".
I haven't changed any settings or anything on my Macbook whatsoever in the last 3 hours (at least that I'm aware of). Can anyone please tell me how to get this back to normal?
Also, it seems that when I right click anywhere on a page, I only see the options "back" and "reload" whereas before there was "view source" etc.
    Please help!

    Hi,
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem. Safari: Add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Since you are running Snow Leopard, *make sure Safari is opening in 32-bit mode, not 64*. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) *make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*

Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.*
If Safari still won't let you open links in new tabs, go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. If it's a successful launch, then that .plist file needs to be moved to the Trash.
If your forum profile is correct (10.6.1) go to the Apple Menu/Software Updates ...
Very important to keep your system software up to date.
If you install the 10.6.3 update make sure and repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Firefox does not open links in new tab

Using Firefox 3.6.15 with XPPro, if I click on a link in Google (or on this site for that matter), it will not open a new tab. In the past, I had no such problem before 3..6.16.
My husband is using Firefox 3.6.15 with XPHome and his does open links in new tab.
I have not added any new toolbars sin updating to 3.6.15. Only use the Roboform toobar and Firefox's.
I thought this might have something to do with Google, which I think used to have an option to open links in a new page, but can't find any such options on Google search page now.

Maybe it is a conflict between Vimperator and a TabMix-like extension?
I am not sure but go check your tab related perfs and add-on options may help.

  • How can I make "Open Link in New Tab" open the new tab in the same window, not a different window?

When I Ctrl-click a link and choose "Open Link in New Tab" it chooses to open the new tab in a different window (one that's already open) rather than opening the new tab in the same window. Even though the other window is minimized, it automatically gets restored and placed on top of the window I was in. This interferes with my context, forcing me to minimize the window again to get back to the one I was in before. I want the new tab to open in the same window, so I can still see the tab I was in. Some links seem to have the "Open Link in New Tab" behavior automatically, so I never know when I'm going to get thrown out of my current window. Very annoying.

If you have a mouse with a scroll button then try to middle click the link to open the link in a new tab.
It is also possible that the links use onclick JavaScript instead of a href to specify the action.
