Open new tabs not working (cmd+T)

after the most recent leopard security update (not really sure if that has anything to do with it though) safari has lost it's command+"T" ability to make new blank tabs. in fact not even firefox can do it. i'm very puzzled and no one on this forum or others have mentioned any problems. please help, tabs are a huge part of my browser and it would annoy me to have to reinstall my OS for this. thanks in advance.

Hi again,
Did you restart both applications after resetting things? The keyboard shortcuts only kick in upon a restart of the application.
If you did that, one quick test you can do to help narrow down things is to try Safari in another user account. This will help us to know whether your problem is local to your account or system wide. If you don't have another account you can use System Preferences -> Accounts -> \[+\] to create a test one (and \[-\] to remove it if needed)

  • IE 11 - Open in new Tab Not Working

When I click on a link that should open in a new tab (or right-click and select Open in new Tab), IE11 Opens a new tab but the screen is blank, the URL is about:blank and the tab title is 'Blank Page'.
    Windows 8.1 x64
    Internet Explorer 11 (Desktop)
The 'Metro' version of IE 11 still works fine, it's just the Desktop version which is broken.
I've tried all the fixes listed in the similar thread, but none have helped.
    IE 11 TABS NOT WORKING
    IE 11 opens blank tab

Thanks, I ran a Command Prompt (Admin) and ran the following scripts:
    ie8-rereg.32on64.cmd
    ie8-rereg.64on64.cmd
Both seemed to execute correctly, but haven't made a difference.
Unfortunately they have never been a complete repair and now, due to security/obscurity have been made even less effective.  There was an example in here a while ago in which the poster helped me see that exploiting the original manifests might have
been a better tack for a repair.  IIRC they uncovered some registry corruption which seemed related to mshtmled.dll but which was not repaired by registering that module and was damage which was only hinted at by looking at the manifest.
The poster's repair was found by comparing registries from otherwise identical systems...
OMG look what this recollection has dredged up:  <lol/>

Interestingly, I came across another oddity which might indicate the behaviour is some sort of change to the IE security settings. On a site I frequent http://www.makegamessa.com/ none of the links work.
They've all previously worked and they still work in other browsers, just not my IE. If you click a link it is supposed to open the page in the current window (i.e. not opening a new tab), but nothing happens. However, if I have the F12 developer tools open,
then the links all work as expected OR if I add the site to Trusted Sites the links also work.
That sounds like Active Scripting is inhibited.  Scripting would be disabled in a Restricted security zone or in an Internet zone which was set to High level.  Scripting would be enabled in a Trusted security zone.  Scripting would be required
in order to use IE11 Developer Tools since that is its implementation.  It hadn't occurred to me that that might provide an override for Scripting which had been otherwise inhibited.

  • Open in new tab not working properly. How can I get it to stop opening new windows?

Firefox recently updated and my + open new tab button was gone. I found and downloaded the extension to put it back on, which is now gone but never worked. I have checked options>tabs and it is supposed to be opening new tabs. I can click file open new tab and it still opens everything in a new window. I've loved firefox for several years but if this isn't fixable quickly I'm gone. Can anyone help?

You definitely should not need an extension to get a new tab button!
Do you have any tab related extensions now, such as Tab Mix Plus or Tab Utilities?
Try resetting your toolbar layout by renaming the file that stores customizations. Firefox should returns to the default settings for toolbars and windows. Here's how:
    (1) Open your personal settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder
Help (or Alt+h) > Troubleshooting Information > "Show Folder" button
    (2) Switch back to Firefox and exit the program (e.g., File > Exit)
    (3) Wait a few moments for Firefox to finish updating files in your settings folder, then rename '''localstore.rdf''' to something else, like localstore-bad.rdf or localstore.old. Alternately, you can delete the file.
    (4) You're done with your profile folder and you can restart Firefox now.
    Any luck?
With respect to links launching in new windows instead of tabs, the checkbox in the Options dialog should work but there is an exception for scripted windows that have certain parameters set (e.g., dialog style with no toolbars, or a specific size). Launching a link out of a dialog, which is not allowed to have extra tabs in the window, also will launch either a new window or be added to an existing window. Any chance the problem is related to those situations?

  • "Open link in new tab" not working with Safari and new Yahoo Mail won't open in new tabs.  Yahoo says it is a Safari issue.  I don't think so.

    Any ideas?
Works fine in classic Yahoo mail.  But in the "new" Yahoo mail, there is not even an option to open in new tab when I right click the message to be opened.  Interestingly enough, I can right click open to new tab on any other link on the same page that the emails are listed in.
Anyone encounter this?  Have a solution?
    Thanks.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 7 buttons, click Reset.
If that didn't help, try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
    Quit Safari.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Relaunch Safari. Try Yahoo / tabs. If it functions as it should, move the .plist file to the Trash. Otherwise move it back to the Preferences folder.
And check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit then relaunch Safari. Try again.

  • Force links to open in new tabs not working any more

Since the 10.6.4 update, safari on my macbook pro has stopped opening links in new tabs, and went back to the default of opening links in new windows. This is the old terminal command I used to change it initially :
    +defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true+
It doesn't seem to work any more. I've attempted it several times. My Mac is also on 10.6.4, but I'm not experiencing the same problem there.
Anyone else happen to have this happening?

    HI and welcome.....
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select Tabs in the menu.
Click the pop up menu and select: Always

  • Safari 8.0 Open in New Tab not working correctly

    Hard and Software:
    MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008), 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
OS X Yosemite 10.10 clean install, iCloud enabled, Safari 8.0
    Problem description:
When I open any type of link in a new tab on Safari, the link shows up in the address bar for that tab, but is not executed, so the tab page remains blank with the address bar filled with the link. Only when I put the cursor at the end of the link in the address bar and hit return, it is actually opened.
When I open several links in new tabs, this problem only occurs for the first tab, the subsequent tabs open normally.
    Troubleshooting Performed:
I changed search engine, turned off suggestions, disabled javascript, cleared history and website data, changed tab settings and turned off extensions. And the problem remained through all these steps.

The described problem goes further: also when I type in any address on the address bar and press return, nothing happens. The address is correctly shown in the address bar, but is does not load the page. When I reposition the cursor behind the address in the address bar, and hit enter, it loads.

  • Right click "Open Link in New Tab" not working?

When at any website I try to right click on a link and then choose "open link in new tab" and nothing happens. "open link in new window" also does nothing. I think Firefox updated and restarted my computer last night as well. I tried Firefox safe mode and it still happened.

  • Firefox 22 /Open link in new tab not working

Just loaded FF22. Sometimes I have a slow connection speed and I need FF to open links in a new tab, so pages do not have to reload.
    On the earlier version.
Say I went to www.google.com and clicked on search link, It would open in a new tab (without right clicking link, and specifying to "Open link in new tab" It would do this on all links automaticly.
Am I missing something here. Do I need to go into about.config to set this. Or go back to an earlier version of FF.

Here's my solution to the problem of making links always open in a new tab. This only applies to Mac OSX tho.
Get [http://blog.boastr.net/downloads-secondbar-bettertouchtool-2/ Better Touch Tool]. (This program creates keyboard and mouse/trackpad gesture shortcuts and it's free/donation BTW)
I set up several shortcuts in Better Touch Tool, but the relevant one here would be "Middleclick" which by default opens a link into a new tab. The gesture I set to do this happens to be three finger tap.
    These are my configured gestures/shortcuts:
four finger swipe down -> sleep display
    three finger tap -> middleclick
three finger double tap -> command-h (minimizes all open windows in the current program)
four finger double tap -> Application Switcher
I also enabled Windows Snapping (which mimics Windows windows snapping) and Windows Moving/Resizing (which the way I have configured it means, if I mouse over a window, then hold the Shift and fn buttons, the window will move around without having to hold the mouse/trackpad button, and if I hold just the fn key, the window will resize).

  • Open in new tab not working

    hello all,
ever since upgrading to Lion I have been unable to get highlighted text in a text entry box (ex: FB status update) to open in a new tab whenever the contextual menu item "search with Google" is clicked. I have the safari settings checked so that holding command-click will open in a new tab but this only works for links and other text already rendered on the page.
this is annoying my wife greatly, because after the search takes her away from the current page all text entered is then erased. I've tried working with the Glims safari extension settings with no success.
If anyone has any suggestions, I'll gladly take them. otherwise, it seems I'll be switching back to snow leopard ...
    thanks in advance,
    Joseph Thomasson

wasn't able to find a workaround, so I just reinstalled snow leopard.

  • Firefox will not open new 'tabs', not sure if its disabled, but does anyone know how to enable the use of my tabs?

Firefox will not open any tabs on my browser. I've tried using all alternatives to open a new tab - using the 'plus' (+) button doesn't work, 'control + T' doesn't work, going to File and clicking 'new tab' doesn't work either? Help please!

    Your suggestion worked! Thanks!

  • New Window or New Tab not working in Safari Ver 6

When I click to either open a new window or a new tab in Safari it does not act normally as it does on other computers.  Instead it basically gives me a blank window replacing whatever is currently open.  I have noticed that if I go to full screen mode it shows the additional tabs and then if I go back to non full screen the session shows the extra tabs.  It was working before and something has changed.  I have checked all the preferences in Safari and played with the options in tab section to no avail.

Try again.

    OS X (10.10.2)
    Safari (Version 8.0.4)
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello Eric,

Unfortunately command - option/alt - click doesn't do it either.

  • New Tab not working

I seem inadvertently to have lost the file that Firefox needs, which has a long rather unintelligable name, when you click file -> new tab. Is there a way to get it back?

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems?esab=a&s=troubleshooting&r=3&as=s#w_5-reinstall-firefox here].
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.
