Opening a URL in a browser

Hi all,
Not sure if this is possible (probably due to the security restrictions) but I want to open Internet Explorer to view a web page, instead of Reader/Acrobat when a user is viewing my form standalone.
If they are viewing through IE already then it will work fine, but I want it to work if they have downloaded the form and have opened it off their desktop, which currently I can only get to open the webpage within Acrobat or Reader.
Anyone able to help?
Tom

OK,
So just to clarify, its not actually possible to get Reader to open a browser, but if I force reader to be started through the browser in the first place, that will work?
Thanks Paul, you're as helpfull as ever!
Tom

  • How do you create a clickable QT movie that opens a URL in a browser

    Hi,
    I'd like to create a stand-alone, downloadable QuickTime movie that -- when you click on it -- opens up a Web page in the viewer's web browser.
    I just read this article about HREF tracks, but I didn't find it to be specific enough to be much help to me.

    Does anyone have a step-by-step that will get this done for me?
    Is using Automator the way to go? Can anyone tell me how to use that?

    I've been watching this thread, hoping for an answer. Too bad you guys can't figure it out. Perhaps I can add another piece to the puzzle...
    I have used peer-to-peer software (Acquisition) to download files from "shared" networks. (Yes, it violates copyrights, and with the recent spate of OS X "Trojan", is risky. Mea culpa. I have ceased this behavior.)
    Sometimes, however, a search will provide a boatload of ".mov" files in the 1-3mb size range. (The search term "Jenna" works wonderfully.) If you download one of them, and either look at it in Column View-Preview or actually open the file, (it is set to "Autoplay on opening"), about 1/3 of the way into the file, your default browser will open to a URL which contains "adult" content.
    I have opened one of these files using TextEdit, and by searching for "http" can find the "call" (if you will) for the website. However, it is embedded in "gobbledygook" which I can't understand. HexEditor fares no better.
    When you open the file as a movie, however, and look Window-Show Movie Properties, you find three tracks: Audio, Video, and Flash. If you extract the Flash track and play it alone, it "calls" the URL and the website opens. The Video track does not do this.
    I don't know what to do with this information, maybe you others can use it to figure something out.
    EDIT: I opened the Flash Track with TextEdit. It's too long to post in this message, but not too long for a new post. If it'll help, I can reply again.

  • Opening File URL in a Browser

    I am trying to a TIFF file from my applet using file URL. The TIFF is located in the local file directory and I create an URL and get the Applet Context and call showDocument.
    URL fileURL = new URL("file:///"+ <file location>);
    applet.getAppletContext().showDocument(fileURL, "_blank");
    The problem with the above code is that if the file location contains spaces it is not opening the TIFF file.
    I tried using URLEncoder to encode the url so that the space could be replaced
    URL fileURL = new URL("file:///"+ URLEncoder.encode(<file location>,"UTF-8"));
    But when i tried with the above code, the spaces are converted to +. Even this is not recognized by browser.
    What should I do so that spaces are converted to "%20" which is recognized by the browser. I tried various encoding formats nothing helps.

    Rather than trying to figure out the file: url yourself you can rely on the
    methods within the File and URI classes to perform the conversion
    between file name and URL.import java.io.File;
    import java.net.MalformedURLException;
    import java.net.URL;
    public class FileUrlEg {
        public static void main(String[] args) throws MalformedURLException {
            File f = new File("space dir/walkaway.wav");
            URL url = f.toURI().toURL();
            System.out.println(url);
    }The output is:file:/C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/pbrockway2/My%20Documents/JDC/space%20dir/walkaway.wav

  • Open URL in a browser with POST request from FlashPlayer?

    I have a SWF file that plays locally in Standalone Flash Player 11.2 under Win 8.1.
    I'm using the standard navigateToUrl() function to open a URL in a browser, so it's not published for AIR, I make sure that request data is not empty - it contains my URLvars, the function is user initiated on click, and the request method is POST.
    Still the browser sends a GET request.
    Am I missing something? Is it possible to fix, so it sends POST?
    Thanks!

    Can not post my code properly because it then requires moderation, so plain text:
    var req:URLRequest = new URLRequest(....);
    var vars:URLVariables = new URLVariables();
    vars.xxxx = hub.extras[3];
    vars.yyyy = hub.extras[4];
    req.data = vars;
    req.method = URLRequestMethod.POST;
    navigateToURL(req, "_blank");

  • How to open a URL without session ID and reuse the current browser session?

    Hi All,
    I have a question about HTMLDB 2.0
    How to open a URL without session ID and reuse the current browser session?
    That was the behaviour in HTMLDB 1.6 ...
    My usecase for this is the following:
    We have written an issue tracking application, which sends e-mail to the interested users, when something happens.
    In these email we've put a link to some page, with some parameters in the URL.
    The idea is for the user to be easy to click on the hyperlink and to see the details of the ticket.
    When the user clicks on such a link he is directed to a login screen (page 101) and he enters his Username and password, and is then forwarded to the details for the ticket.
    Then he receives another email (e.g. for another ticked). He clicks on the link and :
    a) in HTMLDB 1.6 he goes to the details as he didn't close his browser and session is remembered
    b) in HTMLDB 2.0 he is prompted to enter username, password with the username populated
    Please tell me how can I achieve the same behaviour in HTMLDB2.0 as it was in HTMLDB 1.6.
    I understand this change is somehow security related, althogh I don't understand how. If you can explain this either I would be very happy?

    Yes, you can also, e.g. include a help file or manual as html and open that in the browser.

  • How to make firefox open a URL in a PDF document which is loaded using Adobe PDF viewer in firefox to always in a new browser window ?

    Hi
    I have a web application which would enable users to see a list of PDF document on the web page and when the user select the PDF document, it will be open by a adobe PDF viewer.
    Within the content of the PDF document, it will contact URL links to some other portal web pages which we would like these other web pages to be open in a new browser window, but our testing shows that the new web pages may not always open in a new browser window.
    Could you help to advise how I can enforce that new web pages that are clicked from the PDF document can always be open in a new firefox browser window ?
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Sen Lee

    Hello,
    In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
    #Go to ''Tools'' > ''Options'' (or ''Firefox'' > ''Options'').
    #In the Options window, select the ''Applications'' tab.
    #In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
    #On the right handside you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.
    Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • Open url in new browser window

    Hello,
    i am looking for a possibility to open an URL in a new browser window, when the end-user clicked on a button.
    I am aware of the LinkToURL view element. Unfortunately i would prefer to use a button element instead of the LinkToURL elementl. Can anyone provide me with a solution? Maybe there is a possibility to implement the needed coding in the action assigned to the button.
    Thanks,

    Use <a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/43/79f82ccbec6fcde10000000a1553f6/frameset.htm">IF_WD_WINDOW_MANAGER</a> method CREATE_EXTERNAL_WINDOW and pass URL parameter in button click event handler. And don`t forget to call OPEN on new window instance.

    .

    you can open browsers new window using jdic...
    unfortunately Desktop.browse() doesnt allow to do that, but we can do that another way:
            String urlToOpen = "http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5236723";
            BrowserService browserService = (BrowserService) ServiceManager.getService(ServiceManager.BROWSER_SERVICE);
            try {
                // exactly "_blank" allow to open necessary url in a new window :)
                browserService.show(new URL(urlToOpen), "_blank");
            } catch (LaunchFailedException e) {
                e.printStackTrace();
            } catch (MalformedURLException e) {
                e.printStackTrace();

    In Java 6: see java.awt.Desktop.browse(URI)
    In earlier Java versions: Look for the JDIC library, which is the predecessor of that API.

  • Open URL in default browser

    Hi All,
    I'm very new to this (java(fx) programming) and the last days I'm trying to figure out how I can open the default browser when the user clicks the image (loaded from webpage) in the JFXPanel. This image comes from an openx (ads) server and holds a URL as destination link.
    So far all my attempts to accomplish this have failed and I'm lost in this.
    Currently when clicking the image, the destination webpage opens in in the same JFXpanel (ofcourse), but I would like to open this in the default browser.
    this is what I currently have for initiating the scene from swing
                ap = new AdsPanel();
                ap.init();
                JPanel ad = new JPanel();
                ad.add(AdsPanel.fxContainer);the class for loading the webpage:
        //@Override
        public void init()
            fxContainer = new JFXPanel();
            fxContainer.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(JFXPANEL_WIDTH_INT, JFXPANEL_HEIGHT_INT));
            // create JavaFX scene
            Platform.runLater(new Runnable()
                @Override
                public void run()
                    createScene();
    private void createScene()
            Platform.runLater(new Runnable()
                @Override
                public void run()
                    loadURL(FixedVars.SPONSORLINK);
                    WebView view = new WebView();
                    webEngine = view.getEngine();
                    view.setContextMenuEnabled(false);
                    Scene scene = new Scene(view);
                    fxContainer.setScene(scene);
            });Hope some can help me out.
    Thank you very much in advance.

    Just found my solution!! OPening the default browser in a separate thread. Please feel free to comment me, on the code (I do not earn my money as a developer)
    private void createScene()
            Platform.runLater(new Runnable()
                @Override
                public void run()
                    loadURL(FixedVars.SPONSORLINK);
                    WebView view = new WebView();
                    webEngine = view.getEngine();
                    view.setContextMenuEnabled(false);
                    webEngine.locationProperty().addListener(new ChangeListener<String>()
                        @Override
                        public void changed(ObservableValue<? extends String> observable, final String oldValue, final String newValue)
                                if ( !newValue.contains(FixedVars.SPONSORLINK) )
                                    System.out.println("newval =: " + FixedVars.SPONSORLINK);
                                    Platform.runLater(new Runnable()
                                        @Override
                                        public void run()
                                            loadURL(oldValue);
                                    // open the destination URl in the default browser
                                    // class will open a new thread
                                    BrowserOpener.main(newValue);
                    Scene scene = new Scene(view);
                    fxContainer.setScene(scene);
        }and the class opening the default browser:
    public abstract class BrowserOpener implements Runnable {
         * url string
        private static String uriString;
        public void open(String url) throws Exception{
            URI u = new URI(url);
            java.awt.Desktop.getDesktop().browse(u);
        public void run() {
            try
                open(uriString);
            catch ( Exception ex )
                Logger.getLogger(BrowserOpener.class.getName()).log(Level.SEVERE, null, ex);
