Opening Folders in the Mac

Hi,
I have a question about navigating the different folders within the Mac. On my windows machine whenever I open a folder, it open the contents of that folder within the same window.
On the Mac, When I click on a folder it opens a a whole new window to display the contents of that folder. This can get very annoying as I move through the different folders on my machine.
Does anyone know how to change this behavior so the mac opens folders within the same window?
Thanks,
Danny

Press the oval button at the top right corner of the window and try opening the folder again.

  • List View always opens folders at the BOTTOM of the list... Help!

This is a very annoying little problem I've encountered. I have 2 folders in my dock - Applications and Downloads. I like to have my Downloads folder open as a List when I click on it, however it always opens the folder at the very bottom of the list. I have it sorted by Date Added so that the last thing I downloaded is at the top, however since the folder shows me the very bottom of the list when I open it, I have to constantly scroll all the way up to the top to find the last item I downloaded.
Also, it doesn't matter how I sort the info, the problem persits (so if I set it to sort by Name, it opens at the bottom with the Z items and I have to scroll up to look through). But if I sort things any other way (Grid, Fan) it always opens at the top like it should. Both folders in my dock behave like this when set to List.
Is there a way to fix List view so that it opens folders at the top of the list?

  • Dragged I movie on my Mac to flashdrive Now it doesn't show on the flashdrive or I can't open it on the Mac. How do I retreive my work

I dragged I Movie from my I Mac to a flashdrive. Now it doesn't show on the flashdrive or I can't open it on the Mac. How do I retrieve the work?? Help

If you only dragged it, it should make a copy so it should still be on your hard drive.
It isn't clear if you dragged iMovie (the application itself) or your movie project. Which one is it?
    How is the "flashdrive" formatted?

  • Opening folders in the same tab???

I'm fairly new to Macs and I have a question. I currently run OS 10.5.3. I know that for security reasons (i.e. not accidentally deleting something) that when you open folders in Finder that the default setting is to open each folder in a different window, like below...
    Harddrive 1
    Music
    Nirvana
    Nevermind
    Songs
Is there a way to change the options so that everything opens in one window? It's a real pain to have to X out of so many windows everytime I want to search for something - and please don't tell me to use the search feature lol. I know how to use that but I'm curious if I can override the each folder in a new window option, so that I can just have one window with either several tabs or so I can just hit the back arrow key, forward arrow keys so it looks more like....
    Harddrive 1 -> Music -> Nirvana -> Nevermind -> Songs
For the record, I am the administrator of the computer. For the only other account on the computer (my girlfriends) it opens everything in one window where you can just click the back and forward arrows, like I'm hoping to be able to do. I know she didn't mess with any options either because she's not too computer savvy, so is that the default for non-administrators? I know I didn't set it that way.

The back and forward arrows are to go to the last opened folder and the next.
They function EXACTLY like the back and forward arrows in Safari.
    Finder can't do tabs.
Try pathfinder, as the other poster recommended.

  • Want to open folders in the SAME window

I just did a clean install of Leopard, and now whenever I open a folder I get a new window! I doesn't matter what the status of the checkbox "Always open folders in a new window" is in the Finder preferences. I ALWAYS get a new window. Are there any preferences to delete, or other option to stop this?

I need help on this also. I had the problem on 10.4 and hoped that it would go away with Leopard. It has not.
I tried trashing the finder preferences in USER Library and restarting to no avail.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Opening folders in the bookmarks bar

Is it possible to make folders in the bookmarks bar to open "like other menus" i.e. when you move your mouse to the next folder the old one closes and the new one opens. Now I have to click the new menufolder twice. The first click closes the old one and the second opens the new one.

I am running 10.6.7 and Safari 5.0.5 on a MBP silver keys) and I am not able to get Safari to save bookmarks to the bar. I have tried a few times now but whenever I quit and reopen Safari the bookmark bar resets to the default. GRRRR

  • Why Won't Apple Mail 4.1 Accounts with Folders on the Mac Take in Email?

    Tuesday, October 6, 2009
    3:11 PM  -0800
I cloned my first generation MacBook Pro to a new and very hot 3.06 dual core.
I have three mail accounts on Apple Mail 4.1 running on OS 10.6.1. I changed port 25 on SMTP to port 587 as required.
The two accounts with mailboxes on the Mac, Verizon and Yahoo! Plus, can't receive mail. They turn grey and show that little dinky sign. Connection doctor doesn't specifically tell me what's going on, either.
I'd love to have a way to check the POP server and it number, but I can't do that with Apple Mail.
I've taken out and re-created both accounts. I have a lot of email filters and don't want to lose them. I suppose the next thing to do is trash the ~Mail folder bug hold on to the filters. The geniuses at the local Apple outlet say it's something which must be fixed here at my home address.
Verizon is my major account, by far. I have made the required changes on the SMTP port from 25 to 587. I sure wish I could check the POP ports and their numbers on Apple Mail.

    Greetings,
I'd love to have a way to check the POP server and it number, but I can't do that with Apple Mail.
Says who? Of course you can check this; if you couldn't then you also couldn't enter those port numbers, which would make no sense at all.
    *For Incoming Verizon:*
    POP server name is incoming.verizon.net
    POP port number is: 110
Verizon does not support SSL, but does require Password Authentication.
You can see both of these in the Advanced tab of Preferences > Accounts
    *For Outgoing Verizon:*
    SMTP server name is outgoing.verizon.net
    SMTP port number is 25
No SSL, but Password Authentication is required.
You can view these in the Account Information tab in Preferences > Accounts
    *Incoming Yahoo! Mail Plus:*
    POP server is plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com
    POP Port number is 995
    Check SSL and Pasword Authentication
    *Outgoing Yahoo! Mail Plus:*
    SMTP server is plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com
    SMTP Port number is 465
    Check SSL and Pasword Authentication
Test it by sending email from each account to the other.

  • Mac attempting to open folders with the Icon Composer application

When opening a folder from anything other than a finder window(like the "Open In Finder" button in a stack or by clicking the preview icon in the Get Info box) my Mac attempts to open the folder with the Icon Composer application. Of corse this produces an error saying the Icon Composer cannot open files of this type. It is like the "Open With" setting got messed up somehow though there is no "open with" option for a folder that I can find. It does not matter whether the Icon Composer is running or not though this issue did not start until after I ran the application for the first time.
I have tried renaming the finder's .plist file and the finder's settings seem reset but the problem persists. If it were a problem with the Dock it would not persist within other apps(including the Get Info window right?
    Any advice?

never see this one. try resetting launch services. delete the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.launchservices.plist and try this again.

  • I reinstalled a new Hard Drive but cannot get the DVD tray to open to install the Mac OS?  How do I open the Tray?

I reinstall a new Hard drive.  But I cannot open the DVD tray to install the OS?  All I get the the ? in the folder when the computer turns on?

    Hi copa1226:
Sometimes the best solutions are the manual ones.  There is a mechanical fail safe built in to these devices,  I have had to use this method several times myself, so ....
    .....   Try this:
    1) Power off your mac pro.
    2) With your finger, pull down the metal bezel on the affected drive.
    3) You should now see the front plastic bezel on the affected drive, it is usually black or grey.
    4) Look for a small pinhole somewhere on the front. It will have a very small diameter, about 0.5mm.
    5) Yes it's there, all cd/dvd drives have one!   Note: a small flashlight comes in handy here.
    6) Straighten out a standard paperclip for about 2 -3 inches.
    7) Insert the paperclip in the small hole and push, you will have some resistance, and then the drive tray will slowly push out about 0.5 inches or more.
    8) Grab the tray and pull it out !!
    9) You are done!
    10) If you do this gently you won't hurt the drive. Boot up and the tray should automatically slide back in. You are good to go.

  • How do I disable preparation for read out laid when I open files on the Mac Acrobat Pro DC

I seem to remember this was a real problem in Windows? for earlier versions as I would sit and wait for Acrobat to do this meaningless chore as I never have files read to me.  But there was a software switch somewhere in the prefs.  I really can no longer find that switch.  Anyone know where it is or maybe this should be a requested feature?  Thanks

  • Stupid Mac OS bug - Won't delete open folders in list view

This took some time to figure out and might help someone else... If you want to delete a folder while in list view, you must first close it before it will be deleted.  In the example below, you can select folder "Test 1", Move to Trash and it will be deleted.  Try the same thing with "Test 2" and nothing happens.  No error messages but it won't be deleted.  You must first close the folder (by clicking on the triangle), select the folder,  Move to Trash, then it will be deleted.  If you select a group of folders, all of the selected folders must be closed or none of them will be deleted. This bug only affects deleting folders while using list view (that I'm aware of).  You can rename the folder, you can move the folder.  You just can't delete the folder.  Occurs with the Public share as well as any other shares you created. There is no problem deleting folders while in icon view or column view.  2TB My Cloud with firmware v04.01.04-422Mac OS 10.9.5WD disc mounted on desktop with smb://< IP Address >Logged on to WD disc with username & password.  Account has full access.

Just tried it (rename, move and deletion on open folders) on my mac mini running Yosemite 10.10.4 and no problems here. Tried on both local drive and on the Cloud mapped by AFP and SMB. It could be an open file or something that is preventing the folder from being deleted, or if you are trying this on the cloud, it could be a different samba version since I'm still on firmware 3.04 here on my cloud. Try it locally as well as trying other protocols like connect to server AFP://WMyCloud/<yourcloudname> or smb://WDMyCloud/<yourcloudname>

I converted from a PC to a Mac Mini.  I have my PC documents backed up on a DVD disk.  I have an external DVD drive connected to the Mac Mini.  I want to open these documents up from the DVD storage and save them to the Mac, BUT....when I put the DVD disk in the Mac is NOT reading it!

    Hi Joe,
Thanks for your quick response.  I should add....it worked before.  When I previously inserted the two DVDs into this remote drive, and I went into finder, I could click on the "remote device" line and see all my saved documents (excel, word, etc) on the DVD and open them on the Mac.  Now I cannot see them, when I try to open them on the Mac, nothing happens, nothing is displayed.  I just re-tested the remote DVD drive with a CD and, no problem, it opened up the CD via iTunes and I cold play the CD.  SO......I know the remote DVD drive (it's an LG by the way) is fine, it's something to do with some settings on my mini mac, especially where I could open it previously.  I do not remember changing any settings since then.
When I go into system preferences and click on CD/DVD it gives me options of how to open up a music CD (default is iTunes), a DVD (default is iMovie), etc.  The problem is my DVD is all miscellaneious files/documents.  I just want to be able to see them in the finder.  I also tried to open them via microsoft word, from the remote disk and again, it could not open the drive, even though some of the documents were microsoft word documents.  Again, I was able to open them previously and the DVD is not corrupted in any way.
    Any additional advice?
    Thank you!

  • Opening folders from applications expands them - doesn't open them

Hi this is a reoccuring problem. The first time it was fixed when I re-installed my OS. I would like to figure out how to fix it without doing that.
    The problem is this:
When I'm in an application (say Macromedia Fireworks) and I go to open a document I go command+O (open) then double click a folder and it expands instead of getting a new view with the folders contents. I'm using the list view not the column view, and this is the catch - - it only happens when I'm opening a folder on a network drive and functions properly when opening folders on my local machine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, this is driving me crazy.

My problem was that my computer created an extra
alias of my network drive which appeared empty.
    woodwardo,
I'm not sure how you figured this out, but it works. I think this is caused when applications who use external scratch disks crash, leaving the hidden alias. In my case, I had a ton of scratch files from photoshop and nikon capture on invisible aliases to external drives. Inside these folders were scratch files--almost 4gb worth!
Perhaps what was happening when we couldn't open folders in the finder in open and save dialogs on external drives, was that the apps were referencing the bad invisible alias and couldn't figure out what was happening.
Thanks. It's definitely solved a big problem for me.
