Opening MS attachments in Mail with Parallels installed

Here's the situation that's happening with a friend that I need some help with. She's running OS X Leopard and Windows XP with Parallels. She has MS Office for both platforms. She uses Mail in OS X as her email application. When she receives attachments in email - i.e. Word document, Excel spreadsheet - it automatically opens in Windows (through Parallels) rather than opening in Word or Excel for Mac. Is there a setting she's overlooked that would make the default application Office for Mac rather than Windows XP?
Thanks in advance for any help offered!

This is happening because the documents she is receiving probably were created originally using the Windows version of Office. Have her select a document then press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window. In the Open With section select the Mac version of the Office application (Word, Excel, etc. depending upon the document) from the drop down menu then click on the Change All button. This should now associate all such documents with the Office application. She will need to do this for a Word, Excel, and PPT document, respectively.
Alternatively, download the freeware utility RCDefaultApp and install it. Then these associations can be handled for all types of documents, MIME types, etc. You will find it at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • I can't open .mov attachments in mail with ios 7.1? Please help?

    Hi
Ever since I downloaded ios 7.1 I can't open .mov attachments in my email. I can email a movie file to myself from the same device and when I click to download it, I get a generic icon and it simply goes to a white screen.
I never had this problem until ios 7.1
    Help please?

I my case there is no button - I can't even scroll down. But I also don't get any error message, especially not "domain error 912".
If I try to open the .mov file the screen shows the movie-progressbar (where you can normally scroll through the video) for half a second and then the screen goes gray. In the middle of the gray screen I can see the file name and the text "QuickTime-Film" (german version) and the file size. Underneath is a "play-button" (with no reaction if I click on it) and the buttons for forwarding the movie and the button for airplay. No "Download full message"-button.
Seems that we are having different problems with more or less the same result. Again, it only seems to happen with mail which was sent through MS Exchange and it started with IOS 7.1. Therefore I don't think that we can fix it but I hope that someone from Apple is "listening".
My fault! I misunderstood your posting - I was looking for a "download full message"-Button on the screen AFTER clicking on the movie icon. But you meant the mail itself - and there I found it. Thanx! That also explains why small mail went through without problems but larger didn't.

  • How can I open all attachments in mail at once?

I use Mail to collect messages from the IMAP server rather than logging in through my university's webmail interface.  I often get mail messages with many attachments that all need to be opened at once (example: an admissions application that has 7 or 8 components for me to review).  Clicking on each of them separately is a pain, particularly since I have repetitive strain issues, and the various applications needed to open the attachments (Word and Adobe Reader for example) want to grab focus after every click, forcing me to keep switching programs.
Is there any way I can tell Mail to just open all attachments to a message at once?

    Try:
Select the attachments you want to open. (Use click, shift click, command click, as usual.)  Control-click on (one of) the selected attachments. Then select "Open Selected Attachments".

  • Unable to open video attachments in mail

I can't open video attachments in my e-mail.

What is the file type for the video attachments?
    Copied from this link.
    http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format.
If the video attachments are Windows Media Video files (WMV files that include a .wmv file extension), WMV is a closed/proprietary Microsoft video format. Microsoft stopped providing and supporting a Windows Media Player version for the Mac and OS X many years ago. There is a 3rd party player that provides for this on a Mac and there is a 3rd party app that provides for this on the iPhone.

  • Installing Bootcamp with Parallels installed

    Hey guys.
I need to install Bootcamp to run Rhinoceros and Grasshopper with full graphics support. It isn't a good idea to run these programs only on parallels. However, I am told that I need to install Bootcamp BEFORE parallels if I want them to share the same Windows copy. I already have parallels installed, along with Revit and the full Microsoft Office suite. I don't want to delete all of my installed programs to install windows onto Bootcamp. Is there anyway to salvage this without having to dig up old codes and trying to get all my software back?
My end-goal is to be able to work in Bootcamp for serious CAD and drafting software, whilst still maintaining the capability of opening these same files for viewing and light edting in Parallels while running Mac. I would be using Bootcamp ONLY for Rhinoceros Grasshopper and Revit. Excel PPT word and other microsoft applications would be run exclusively through parallels.
Thank you for your views and responses
    - Thomas

without knowing anything about parallels and feeling that the parallels forum would likely be a safer place to confirm your questions then
I would think that they mean that you just have to have installed bootcamp before creating the virtual machine in parallels which is to access the windows partition  not wait with installing the virtual machine software(parallels) itself
but as stated parallels is about the only virtual machine software I have no experience with at all

Did you try [/questions/977835?page=2#answer-506091] (change settings from "Full featured" to "Basic")?
Are you accessing Yahoo Mail directly from https://mail.yahoo.com/ instead of through a bookmark? Edit: I see philipp already suggested this and linked to yet another thread, [/questions/971042]

  • I have a cd rom for my italian class, which I cannot open on my macbook pro with mavericks installed, someone said I need Rosetta! Help please

I have a cd rom for my italian class, but am unable to load it on my macbook pro with Mavericks installed.
Someone has said i need Rosetta, but understand that Apple stopped installing this!1
Can anyone suggest anything to help me??

Many educational CDs have not been upgraded due to lack of funds in the educational market to pay for the such updates.
This situation is due primarily to the fact that one of the major political parties in this country favors tax cuts to the rich while cutting federal educational support funding (or eliminating the federal Department of Education altogether).
However, you can restore Rosetta and run your educational CD if you install Snow Leopard Server ($20) into Parallels (up to $79) for use in Lion/Mt. Lion/Mavericks:

  • Opening Word attachments in Mail 8.0

I often receive email attachments as Word files.
Before, I could open them directly in Pages, by Control-Clicking the attachment, and then choosing the program with which to open it.
Now I'm using Mail 8.0 running on OS Yosemite 10.10. and I can't find the 'Open Attachment With' option.
    Is there one?
If so, where did it go?
    Thank you,
    David Schneider

What seems to work for me is to put the pointer on the attachment, then hold down the control key, and do a two-finger tap on the trackpad.
This gives me the menu I was missing.
I'm guessing that with a mouse, it would be holding down the control key and right-clicking.
    Good luck

  • Attachments in Mail with iLife '08

I "upgraded" to iLife '08 about two weeks ago. Ever since, I have been unable to attach a photo to my email. After my email is composed, I click on "Attach" click on "Photos" then go to iPhoto. At this point, no folders open up like before. I do not want to have to open up iPhoto, click on the picture(s) and drag them in. Am I doing something wrong? There has to be an easier way to attach a photo.....

This worked for someone else using Yosemite. It is a Terminal command. The receiver's e-mail program might not accept it.
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool YES
That doesn't have anything to do with the receiver's e-mail program. It just changes how the attachment is displayed in the outgoing Mail window. It would be an easy way to set the "view as icon" as the default mode.
If rjfrediani is only concerned about how the message appears while it is being composed, then that should work fine. But it doesn't change the actual structure of the e-mail. Recipients would still get images and PDFs that show up as images, maybe.

  • Can't open pdf attachments from Mail

When I'm in Mail and try to open or save to my computer and then open a pdf in Preview, I get an error message  -
"The file “Proposal to Seattle City Light - Wolverine Study 6Mar2012.pdf” could not be opened.  It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize."
This happens with all pdfs in Mail.  However, if I go to email account on the Internet and download the pdf it opens no problem. This is a new problem, though I can't say if it started happening as soon as I upgraded to Lion or if it happened sometime after (definitely not before).
    Thanks!

I think maybe I wasn't completely clear in my reply to your original message.
I logged into my gmail account online and sent myself a pdf. I then retrieved that message with Mail and the pdf opened with no issues. It doesn't seem like that would be an issue with my mail service provider, because my pdf came through no problem, but those sent from others (all of whom I think are using Windows machines and hence Acrobat) will not open.
I'm going to see if I can get someone using a Mac and someone I know for sure is using a PC to send my pdfs and see what happens.

  • How do I open other versions of Photoshop with cs6 installed?

I've installed CS6 beta to see what it can do, but it won't let me open Photoshop CS4 (my current version).  CS6 is fine and looks slick, but in the meantime, I have actual work to do and all of my presets/brushes/actions/shortcuts are saved on CS4.  Can I just uninstall CS6 and forget about it?
I'm running on Windows Vista, and even when I tell the computer to open a file with CS4, it opens it in CS6.  When I go to the Program Files/Adobe/PhotoshopCS4/application, it STILL opens CS6.

    Hi,
On Windows, you can only open one version at a time. So, inorder to run CS4, quit CS6 and then launch CS4. It should work fine.

  • Problems with attachments to mails (with browser firefox)

    Dear Sir or Madam,
I can't attach files (even small ones) to my mails sent with firefox anymore. I always receive these words: "Bad Request - Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand." WHY?? Before, it worked without any problems. I want to stay with firefox! Please, answer me. Thank you very much in advance. MB

Firefox does not do email, but there are enough users here that someone might be able to help you anyway, if you indicated what web based email you are using and how you are attempting to add the attachment. And when it stopped working, if you can improve on that statement. What is the file extension of the attachment.
Looks like you provided the exact wording on the message so Googling that including the enclosing quotes. Seems to show the number 1 answer comes from Yahoo answers -- so for maybe they have the biggest problem the example will assume it is yahoo, though they all have these same two problems. Such problems often occur more frequently when the website makes major changes or when Firefox comes out with an updated version. I think Yahoo changed their site they wanted me to update to the new whatever.

    *# Tools > Options > Privacy
    *# search on yahoo
*# try clearing the mail.yahoo.com cookies, if that doesn't work try extending the range within yahoo's cookies.

Yahoo provides good picture documentation on their site and better and safer than Mozilla's support example for Firefox (which requires you to read carefully or end up destroying all of your history), but I think my picture above is better as it shows both panels side by side. But you might want to the the same for other browsers from their documentation as well.
