Opening Nikon NEF NX Files in CS3 in iMac

I have just replaced my 2006 iMac which was running on OSX Tiger 10.4.11 with an iMac running OSX 10.6.4 Snow Leopard. I have installed my legit.CS3 version 10.00. I use a Nikon D300 and have loaded Nikon Capture/Transfer/ViewNX version 1.5.2 which I used on my previous iMac to transfer my images, which are in Nikon Raw NEF, from camera via a card reader. If I open Nikon View NX I can view the images in thumbnails but when I attempt to drag the thumbnails into Adobe they will not open and I am informed " Could not complete your request because Photoshop does not recognize this type of file". I get the same message if I attempt to open the thumbnails from Adobe Bridge into Photoshop. These thumbnails in Adobe Bridge do not show an image. I have downloaded Adobe update 10.01. but this has not solved the problem.
I also take jpeg images on a canon ixus compact. I can see their images in the thumbnails in Adobe Bridge and either open them in Photoshop from Bridge or from Nikon View without a problem.
What do I need to do to open the Nikon Raw files please?

No, no, no…
You don't want ACR 4.3.1 or any other flavor of ACR other than ACR 4.6.  Accept no substitute.
4.3 may have been the first version of Camera Raw to support your camera, but the support is maintained in ALL subsequent versions of the Camera Raw plug-in, and each succeeding version has unannounced improvements and bug fixes.  So you ALWAYS want the highest version you can use with your version of Photoshop.  In the case of CS3, the last version that will run is 4.6, and that is what you want.
To run ACR 5.7 you would need CS4, and to run 6.2 or later you'll need CS5.
So, install version 4.6 now.
The root Library is the one immediately following the name of your hard disk, NOT the User Library in your Home (your name) user folder.
Command-click on thumbnail to see full size image in a new web browser tab or window.

  • Please help! How do i open Nikon D610 raw files in cs3 on a mac OS X 10.6

how do i open d610 raw files in cs3 on a mac OS X 10.6
I clearly have issues supporting these files on such an old laptop but these images are critical and I would appreciate any download advise or other??

Download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert your files to DNG and CS3 should be able to open them.

  • How can I open Nikon NEF raw files in CS4?

I've tried all the tips I've seen in the Forums so far to no avail.  I've downloaded the latest software, I've found the Carmera Raw.8bi file - it's in the Adobe/Plug Ins/CS/File Format.  I have Cs4 selected as the default to open NEF files.  What else can I do?  I have the D90.

The latest version of camera raw is 5.7 for cs4.

If you go to the About Plug-in under the help menu and choose camera
raw, you can see which version you have.
The location should be C:/Program Files/Common Files/Adobe/Plug-ins/CS4/File Formats.
If you have a 64 bit windows, there will be one in the Program files/common files
and one in the Program files (x86)/common files.

I assume you're running Photoshop CC (not sure what you mean by "with CS3" unless that's the version you upgraded to CC from)

  • Open Nef (Raw) file in CS3

    Hi,
When trying to open a Nef (Raw) file from Nikon D90 in Photoshop CS3 the following happens:
    - Nikon Scan 4.0 tries to open (why scan?)
and deliveres the message "buffer overrun,
program must be terminated", the header
for this message is "Visual C++ runtime
    library"
The default application to open Nef files
is Nef launcher 1.2 according to Adobe Bridge, so why this Nikon Scan 4.0 fuss?
So please tell me what to do to be able to
open Nef files in Photoshop CS3.
    Thank You,
    Martti

I should have written a bit more. The latest update for ACR, compatible with Photoshop CS3 is version 4.6. If this is too old for your camera* you have to use the DNG convertor
    * I suggest you do some reading (especially the links at the top) in the ACR Forum at http://www.adobeforums.com/webx?13@@.3bb6a85c.
Further questions would be better posted there. Include exact system and camera details.
The instructions on how to install are all there too.

  • Mac OS 10.9.4 cannot open the NEF/RAW files from the new Nikon D810 Camera

I have a new Nikon D810 camera. My new iMac cannot open the NEF/RAW files from it...Anyone have any knowledge of this?

If you will take the time to send Apple feedback, they will add RAW support - when I got my Canon, it wasn't supported either. I filed feedback and, two months, later, there was an update which included my camera model.

  • I have Photoshop CS5.5 Design Premium and need to open Nikon NEF files

I have Photoshop CS5.5 Design Premium and need to open Nikon NEF files.
I just downloaded the plug in for CS5.5 and it does not work. I put the Camera Raw.8bi file in the correct location as specifiec in the "read me" file.
Can someone guide me on how to do this, adn make it work?
    Thank you.
    Jay

    so far no luck.
I ran DNG program for Windows (I have Win 8) and ran the menu to convert
the files on the same memory card from the camera.   Of 135 files, the
status column for the first 68 files said "converted," but the for all the
rest, it says "There was an error writing the file."
Of the files that "converted," they do not open, and I get the same error
message as before: "Could not complete your request because it is not the
    right kind of document."
    So, what a mess.
I get conflicting indications of the version of Photoshop I have. When i
click "About Photoshop in the Help menu, it says CS5 Extended.    The Error
message for the dng files says CS5.1 Extended.  Does it make a difference?
I've been at this three hours now.  It's a pain.   For many years I had no
problem with NEF files, as I had installed the plug-in as required. This
time it is not working. So I am not new to this.

  • Opening nikon NEF file in cs2

I am trying to open Nikon NEF(raw ) images in cs2 and get the message:
'could not complete your request because it is not the right type of document'
i tried to download CameraRaw 3.7 but when i try to open that, i get the same message.
how can i set up cs2 to open these raw images? i am using an imac duo core in osX.4.11
    thanks.

What Nikon camera model? Each Nikon camera model generates different NEF (raw) files. Not all are supported by ACR 3.7.

  • Opening Nikon D7000 raw files in Elements 8

I am unable to open Nikon D7000 NEF files in Elements 8. I have been unsuccessfull in downloading the version 5.7 update from the web site. After downloading several times the files are still not recognized in Elements 8.

I am using Windows 7. I tried selecting the folder that contained the folder holding the pictures to be converted. I then single-clicked the folder holding the pictures and hit select. A message came up stating that the source folder did not contain any supported camera raw files.I have spoken with my Elements software supplier and this is his response:
"I've done some digging and it turns out the Nikon D7000 wasn't supported in elements until the release of version 6.4 Adobe Camera Reader. So to make sure you have the latest ACR update installed. You can check which one you have by going into elements and clicking Help>About Plug-In>Camera Raw. And if it's not 6.7 then Help>Updates will find it and let you install the latest version. You could also try saving your camera files as .RAW instead of .NEF, and then opening them in elements. Adobe lightroom 4 should already have these plugins available right outside the box, but if you can save the money and run updates instead that would work just fine." I have checked for Elements updates for the Camera Raw plug-in and the message appears stating no updates are available. The camer raw plug-in version is currently 6.1.0.250.

What operating system are you using?
The most common cause is pointing the dng converter to the actual files and not just to the folder that the camera raw files are in.
There is an example of how on a windows system in this thread:

  • Elements 10 won't open a nef(raw) file?

I downloaded photoshop elements 10.Uptated it.It still won't open a nef(raw) file.It just said it is the wrong type of file? What do I have to download to open and edit this type of file?

You will need to wait for the next camera raw update. You have two alternatives:
    (1) Use Nikon software to convert. (2) Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your NEF files to the Adobe Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your original NEF’s as backups and for use in Nikon software)
Windows download click here DNG Converter 7.1
Mac download click here DNG Converter 7.1
You can convert a whole folder of NEF images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Nikon nef raw files

hi guys first vsit to the forum but hopefully not last!
i use nikon d90 usually with nikons own capture nx2 software which is great for just tickling photos a bit before printing but sadly lacking on the creative side, so bought elements 7 , now the images straight from camera won`t open in elements but strangely i had scanned images in and altered in nx2 which open in raw in elements? after reading up some answers i tried changing 8bi plugins ( ie moving old one and putting new one in its place but still they won`t open !!!! which is a tad annoying . it might sound stupid but i still don`t know exactly which bits are in conflict anyone tried this with this camera combination cheers

yes i think this was my problem , i just got myself confused! when i went back and deleted everything then reinstalled it it was fine , but many thanks for bothering to help i`m sure i`ll be back on with more problems cheers john

As John explained, one of the key mistakes people make is not properly deleting the old plugin that is in the File Formats folder.
Please make sure/confirm that you deleted the old plug-in or moved it entirely out of the File FOrmats folder. Renaming them, or moving them to a subfolder of File Formats won't work.
This has nothing to do with installing camera profiles.

  • How can i open Nikon D610 RAW files in Element 12 ?

How can i open Nikon D610 RAW files in Element 12 ?

You need the ACR 8.3 plug-in to open D610 NEF files.
Check what Help / About Plug-ins / Camera Raw reports for the version number.
If it is something less than 8.3, update to the ACR 8.3 plug-in using Help / Updates from the Editor.  If that says there are no updates, then uninstall and re-install and try again.
If it is already ACR 8.3 then the files are likely corrupted by using an obsolete version of Nikon Transfer or ViewNX with them.
You can fix that corruption using a utility from the following webpage, where 14-bits is likely what you’d want to specify, and only use Nikon utilities that are as new as your camera:

  • ACR 7.0 in Released version of CS6 doesn't open Nikon D800 raw files.

The ACR 7.0 that installs with rhe released version of Photoshop CS6 still won't open Nikon d800 raw files.

Noel - I do use a card reader and always have! I don't go direct from the camera. As I point out, I am working around the problems that are stated above and I am here forcing myself to learn by asking those questions. Thanks though. I’m not ignoring anyone if I were I wouldn’t have all the comments above.
Jeff - I mentioned that I'm a teacher and need to know what I'm doing with the software. Sorry for the attitude.
I am an artist before a teacher it’s just that I like to be proficient when I teach (google me).
Why do you feel such animosity towards education? I’m really sorry I posted here at all.
    ssprengel -
I am equally as surprised and not blaming LR4 just making an observation. I have used LR for years and manage a library of over 60,000 images with it. It is my software of choice and will continue to be. But this has become a persistent problem only with the D800 14bit NEF +- 45MB files, all other files from my Nikon DX cameras and my Canon cameras are fine. I’m not blaming LR4 it could also be the Nikon NEF, I just don’t know why LR4 truncates the D800 files and other software doesn’t.
    - if I move files using Nikon ViewNX 2 or Windows7 Explorer the files simply move without problem. When I move them using LR4 they become truncated (no end of file error message). If I move them with LR4 and then copy over them into the new folder with the original copy, LR4 corrects and is able to deal with the file in their new destination. (this means a lot of extra work and saving the originals in another directory LR4 doesn’t see).
It's confusing. I have reinstalled LR4 3 times already and checked the hard disks. The bottom line is that both Windows and ViewNX will move the file without altercation. I don’t know why? Yet further confusion. Please realize that I am aware this may be an isolated issue and I intend to ask one of the college techs. to look at the problem.
I am not attacking Adobe, I only use Adobe products with my images and I want it to work that’s why I came here in the first place. I have a lot of money invested in Adobe software both here and all our other licences. Please stop using words like blame, reporting an issue is not blaming. Don’t shoot me I’m just conveying my current (personal) experiences with the product. I’m trying to figure out why and how to make it work.
This is my last post on this thread. Thanks a lot for all your help. I remain a faithful Adobe client and appreciative of all your kind remarks and assistance above.
