Opinion on difficulty of Dreamweaver

I am a composer and am pretty computer-savvy. I use Adobe
Photoshop, and InDesign (CS2) on a MAC G5. I am not a super
experienced user of these products, but I use them to design the
cover of my musical compositions and have done pretty sophisticated
photo projects--but again, there are many features of these apps
that I never use. I'm just trying to give you a sense of my level
of competence.
I would like to create a website that contains my musical
compositions (mp3's), some background info on myself, and want to
be able to update content. I don't want the site to look static--I
want it to have a hip look--but it doesn't need to be hugely
cutting edge--I compose music for the harp--not exactly 21st
century stuff--but I just want to have control over the design and
have it look impressive. I'm not an html-level coder .
I have started to mess around with (don't groan, you
techno-philes), iWeb, an apple product, and of course, it's pretty
limited but could probably do the job.
So what do you think?
Is the learning curve for Dreamweaver exponential?
Is there hope for a somewhat savvy computer user to put
together a website using Dreamweaver without a monumental
investment of time?
I await your responses....
Thanks!
Meg

Robert,
I want to clarify about something here. Maybe you
misunderstood me, or I misunderstood each other.
I honestly am at loss about what you are saying and I didn't
challenged about how you charge the web design service. It is none
of my business for that matter.
Like you and all others,I did pretty much with self-learning
along with plenty of curiosity that gotten me going... and plenty,
plenty of coffee along the way. LOL I bought my first web authoring
app, at a time, called Adobe PageMill (and SiteMill) then Adobe
GoLive eventually switched to Dreameaver 4 (then bought Macromedia
Studio MX). I can't believe how time flies. I look back about
PageMill and compare it with Dreamweaver 8, it is totally different
ball of game, you know. At the time, and ever since then, I learned
about HTML and eventually CSS. Some with Javascript. And with
data-driven websites using PHP/MySQL, XML and some Flash using
ActionScript working with PHP/MySQL and XML. I am learning about
working Flex.. I am not going to go on with all of web technologies
that got my curiousity going and get both of my hands dirty working
with.
At around the time SuperHighway and Internet became more
popular in 1990s, I went to Rochester Institute of Technology and
took lot of computer programming classes...but ended up majored in
Economics. With some background, and hands-on experience from
programming classes I took (and two summer interships as
programmer), it helped me to learn about HTML on my own. I find
that it is a bit easier for me to work with data-driven websites
because of my classes I took at RIT. I don't want to bore you with
all that fundamental background about my educ at RIT or how it led
me into web design field.
All it takes lot of time, effort, and patience to get my
comfort zone working with HTML/CSS, then I feel comfortable working
with Dreamweaver. I strongly encourage you to learn HTML and try to
do less lot of "images" set up like those of your showcase.
As for your statement about the budget question to the OP, I
was just curious about your showcase and see how you work.
Like what I told you earlier about my astounding and to my
amaze. But I agree with Murray that your site looks nice as in
"look and feel" appearance of your site or your client's. As you
realize that now, most of us also usually look into html source as
how web page was developed or coded with.
I see that you are in web design course, I hope this course
benefits you, and eventually your clients. I hope that your web
design instructor knows what to cover and teach more about HTML
(and CSS) would be nice and that will help big time. If your
instructor show you the different way other than learning and
getting both of your hands dirty under the hood of HTML, perhaps
that you should request for a full refund of course and find other
instructor that focus on teaching about HTML.
Knowing and understand about how HTML will help. I am not
going to go on and lecture about this or that for you. I just
thought I wanted to let you know how I looked at my perspective
about fundamentals of web design focusing on HTML rather than web
pages filled lot of images all over. I hope you understand what I
am trying to say, no?
Unless you must have thick skin, go ahead. I am trying to
help you and make you understand and encouraging you to learn more
HTML, the better in a long run. It is up to you.
All in all, I challenge you to do more by learning HTML.
However, it is up to you.
Cheers, Brian (DWD)

  • Does Dreamweaver CS3 work with 64 bit version of Windows 7?

Windows 7, 64 bit, Home Premium was clean installed.  I had no difficulty reinstalling Dreamweaver CS3, but when I try to open a file I get a message that  says." A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly.  Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."  Apparently none is.  So my question is, does Dreamweaver CS3 work with the 64 bit version of Windows 7?  If not, does CS4 work or would I be wasting money by upgrading?

I just installed it and ran it fine.  I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
Make sure it is a clean install from a fresh "boot".  I ran into problems the first time when I tried to install it right after I installed another program.  I simply uninstalled it.....which took a long long time, but after it was removed and I rebooted, everything went fine.

  • Dreamweaver connection issues

    Hi all,
Over the past couple of weeks I am having increasing difficulty with Dreamweaver trying to connect to BC sites when I am ftpingto the extent I am having to restart DW after closing it down via Task Manager.  It is now on virtually every new file upload and is slowing me down hugely.  Has anyone else experienced this?  I did ask in the DW section and got 1 other who is but thought I'd ask here.
    Many thanks
    Steve

Further to the above - these connection issue are ONLY with connecting to BC Sites, my non BC servers connect without problems.  Further investigation shows that the issue appears to be with my sites on the EU data centre as my US hosted sites seem to hold the connection without problems.
Morten - from your name it sounds like you are in the EU as well?
Come on BC - can someone respond to this please now as it is very frustrating!

  • Editable Attributes?

    Hi there,
I am having some difficulty using dreamweaver's editable attributes for my template-based pages.  I've followed dreamweaver's help instructions but I keep getting error messages and I don't want to screw up my layout.
I simply want the locked region of my side nav to custom size along with the vertically growing editable region of the body area of my page.  I have about 30 pages based off of this template. Are editable attributes the best way to go about this?
    Any suggestions?  Thanks!

As Nancy mentioned, without seeing the code, or at least a preview of the page, hard to tell - please post a link for more help....
It sounds as though you have a sidenav region that has either a background image or color that you would like to expand vertically down the page as the content area expands? How is your page built?
If, for instance the side nav is placed in a table with a fixed height, and the content is in a separate table, try building a single table with two columns (or more columns depending on your needs) - then set the left column to the width and color attributes you have now, and it will expand in height along with the varying content of the right column.
As for the template, you can still lock the left cell within the template, and make the right cell your editable section just as you have now even thought it is part of one complete table. This will also work with css divs - depending upon how your pages are constructed... (in fact css is the preferred method, I used tables just as one example...)
Hope that is of some help - please post a link if this confuses more than helps...

I thank you for your help but I don't understand.
    1. At this time, I edit the web site locally.  When the changes are completed, then I copy the files to the remote (Go Daddy) server, with FTP.
Perfect. In that case, I'm not even going to try to change you to use Dreamweaver's in-built FTP as that will probably confuse you at this stage. In this case, go to 'Remote Info' and make it 'None' - remove all credentials from there - we dont need it configured within Dreamweaver if we aren't using it.
    2. Because my edits are local, testing of the files is local.  In fact, I normally disable the network connection, when I don't need it open.
Go to 'Testing Server' and make it 'None' and remove all credentials - make it blank too. Since you're not using any 'dynamic' services, we don't need to configure one. Your previews can happen via your browser from your 'Local files'.
    3. Go Daddy uses PHP on Linux servers for hosting.
Well, Go Daddy also gives you a variety of other options - but I'm assuming you've purchased a Linux hosting setup with PHP running on it. Let's not worry about PHP here because you're not using PHP to develop your website.
    4. Since I'm not adept with computers, computer terminology and computer configurations, I try to leave settings at default.
The only thing you'll need to keep 'as is' is your 'Local Info'. Other than that, remove both 'Testing' and 'Remote' configurations. You should get going in no time.
    5. I am unsure of the test server requirement.  The descriptions of a "dynamic" page are not clear, to me.  My web site uses,
         a. html,
         b. An XML data page for sorting my photographs,
         c. Spry cascading tables,
         d. Scrolling photo thumbnails,
         e. Links to pdf files and
         f. E-mail contact.
A regular HTML website is usually 'static' - as all the content you have within it is 'hard-coded' or 'hand-written' into it. A PHP/ ASP/ JSP/ CFM code is usually 'dynamic' - meaning only the master template is usually made with code. The actual content is fetched from a database or an external source. And to do this (to fetch data from a database), this type of code has to run on a server-environment. That is the only primary difference between 'static' and 'dynamic' webpages. Not getting into the details of it as I'm unsure if that's going to confuse you more!
If this is not clear, please see me web site.

  • Difficulty with Swf file in dreamweaver

    Hey guys,
I know this should be a very basic question, but it has been
over a year since I have used Dreamweaver or uploaded files. I have
built the site in flash and am basically using dreamweaver as a
holder for the swf file. However, when I try to upload my files and
go to my site, only the background from dreamweaver shows.
I have the dreamweaver saved as index.html and I have put the
swf in the scripts folder. Does anyone know what the deal
    is?

  • Difficulty Running Director (dcr) Shockwave in Dreamweaver CS4

I am running Director 11.5, Dreamweaver CS4, and the latest version of the Shockwave Player.  My operating system is Vista Ultimate; Browser Explorer (latest version).  Movies made in Director 11.5 (dcr) format will not play in the browser when placed in a new page created in Dreamweaver CS4.  Movies made with several previous versions of Director will play.  The movies created in 11.5 will play when opened with explorer or when opened from inside of Dreamweaver when right clicked (outside of a Dreamweaver page)  They also play as part of the publishing sequence from inside of Director 11.5.  The message I am getting when I make the attempt to play the dcr movie in a Dreamweaver page is "The page that you are trying to open contains a movie that is referenced to an incorrect version of the Shockwave Player".  I have used all of these programs for several years and this is the first time I have had any trouble creating movies in Director and running same in Dreamweaver - any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks; O'Ceileachair.

II found the answer to this problem in a Director white page Entitled "Director 11 and Shockwave 11 Release White Paper"  It involves two lines of code which must be included in the Source Code of Dreamweaver in order for the shockwave player to be recognized in a HTML page created in Dreamweaver.

  • Adding fonts to Dreamweaver

I am working on a site in which I want to use some fonts which are outside the choice of the wellknown webfonts we all use normally.
I am getting myself familiar with @font-face, typekit and Google fonts. Ran some tests on a test server and it worked.
However I want to use some of these free, open source fonts like Yanone Kaffesatz and Museo locally.
So I downloaded these fonts, loaded and activated them in my system trough Linoype Fontexplorer.
Now I try to get them to work in Dreamweaver, which does not work.
What I tried is adding them to the fontlist by using "edit Font List" from the bottom of the font list.
Then defined the font-family with them, like so:
    font-family: "Yanone Kaffeesatz Bold";
When I preview the site in a browser the font does not show.
Some do, like League Gothic, but the ones I like to use, Kaffeesatz and Museo, don't.
These fonts do work correctly in other programs though.
I am on a mac and use DW CS4. Site is a straightforward HTML/CSS site which lives on my computer.
Any idea how to solve this?
    Thanks

Type-Kit's portfolio plan costs me about $1 a week for the full run of their fonts. I don't bother to charge clients for using it. (How would I charge? An ongoing $4/5 clients per month? That's just silly.
The system is very easy to use; complete directions are, of course, on their website. Essentially, you set up a 'typekit' file in your account at Typekit for a specific url/domain, and either designate tags (I typically use h1, h2, and h3 tags, but you can also use p tags, etc.). All of those tags on pages that carry the proper 2-line javascript in the head of the page automatically use the typekit font.
You can also add the typekit class (I believe it's a class) to other tags to invoke the typekit font whenever you want to use it in a site, as long as it is registered in your typekit. I think I have five or six typekits set up now, and I'm just brushing the surface of how to use it.
Typekit also makes available 120+ Adobe fonts, which is how I heard about the service.
In my personal opinion, if you are hesitant to use a font from anywhere because you think it might not be there in 6 years, the best way to get around that is with images, though there could be licensing issues.
The biggest issue is licensing. If a font is not licensed for use on the web, there could be trouble. By using an online type service, like Linotype or Typekit, you avoid that difficulty. Linotype (fonts.com) will also be happy to license the download, locally-useful version of the font, as well. I have not actually investigated their fees (lowest plan is free..2,000 fonts; next plan is $10/month...7,000 fonts), though I buy fonts (downloaded...I recall about $16-24 per face) from them frequently. Linotype has been around since 1886, when Ottmar Mergenthaler first cast a line of type in lead. http://www.linotype.com/48/aboutlinotype.html, but as Monotype Imaging has a very strong presence as a purveyor of digital fonts.
Fonts.com has a very good how-to video, essentially similar information and procedure as Typekit uses.
The other issue here is the lifespan of a website. How long from initial design to re-design? Where does 6 years fall in that spectrum?
Regarding @fontface, I don't see any kind of online fonts there...just fonts you can buy and download. So much for being consistent across the web.
Not trying to talk your ear (eye?) off here, just a commentary to take into account.

  • Create password access to a site in Dreamweaver CC

Trying to create a password protected site. I have an intro page and want to have a password required to access the main site. I am using hostgator and from what I can see, they only have a username password access. I need just the password access for our members to access the site. I added server behaviors ext to my Dreamweaver CC but the + sign is grayed out. Ideas?

    Hi
in addition to Ben's recommendation: The easiest way - in my opinion - to protect the recommended website(s) with a password is to ask your provider for this possibility. I can show you here the menu of my German host (Passwortschutz > Password protection):
Here an example of one of my websites, where I used my providers service. You can see what happens if you don't know the required details:
http://dala-laegret1963.de/AccBlocked/AccBlocked.php. There only these users who know the passwords can enter this website.
As you can see I didn't struggle to write the ".htaccess" file of myself, and here I quote Nancy O's hints:
a secure create sign-up page.  When form is submitted, MySQL database is appended with new log-in credentials.
a MySQL database to store unique ID, username, password with a date and timestamp to measure how old each password is.
another secure log-in page to verify valid username, password and date and timestamp.  If it's accepted, a session is created and redirects user to confidential areas of the site.
a log-out page to kill the session.
an error page for when username & password are not found in database.
a secure new password page for when date & timestamp are too old.
For all these things I use the provider's (ISP) service. The advantage is, that the two files (.htaccess and .htpasswd) are created simultaneously and systemconform.  You will find this offer, I am sure, at your provider's website.
Dreamweaver has so too a very easy server-side authentication behaviors built-in... have you looked at those? (Server Behaviors --> Authenticate Users)

  • Can a website created in Dreamweaver 5.5 be maintained with Contribute 6.5?

I have a client who I have advised to purchase Contribute to maintain the website I created for her. When I go to Adobe I see version 6.5. Would she be able to use this newer version to make her updates even if i created the website and all its editable regions in Adobe Dreamweaver 5.5?

You will get a better answer if you ask this question in Contribute Forum at this link:
    <http://forums.adobe.com/community/contribute?view=discussions>
You need to ask them whether Contribute can interpret HTML and CSS codes correctly and whether editing of these codes is easier to do in Contribute or some other HTML editors.
My personal opinion is that people should use dedicated HTML/CSS editors to edit web pages but my knowledge of contribute is almost ZERO.
I didn't want to touch this question but nobody was answering either so I decided to write something.

  • How can I use an Open Type Font in Dreamweaver?

I bought some OTFs, Open Type Fonts.  I want to use them in Dreamweaver. I am on a Windows machine. When I look at the Edit Font List section in Dreamweaver, it has a tiny selection of fonts. I know I have more on my computer.
How would I add these fonts for use in Dreamweaver ?   I have already installed them on my system.

<I don't understand the whole world of font-licensing, so I thought I would be safe by using these fonts which I have purchased with a commercial license.>
That doesn't mean the license extends to digital & web media though.
The fonts licensed by Kindle and included in the Fire are:
    Georgia
    Caecilia
    Trebuchet
    Verdana
    Arial
    Times New Roman
    Courier
Lucida (of which there are several and the one in Kindle appears to be Sans Unicode)
The new Kindle Paperwhite offers users the option to select:
    Caecilia
    Caecilia Condensed
    Baskerville
    Futura
    Helvetica
    Palantino
Older Kindles and the Kindle DX uses Caecilia only. The Kindle computer and mobile apps display the same as the Fire.
The prevailing opinion is that eBooks should not force fonts on people.  Let the user decide which body fonts are best for viewing on their particular device.

  • OT: The Dreamweaver team's blog post about the Dreamweaver modernization effort

    Hi all,
The Dreamweaver team has shared its thoughts on the rationale behind changes in Dreamweaver CC in its blog post http://blogs.adobe.com/dreamweaver/2013/06/a-look-at-the-modernized-dreamweaver-cc.html. The blog post also touches upon what's ahead while providing alternatives to some of the older features that did not make it to Dreamweaver CC.
The team has taken into account feedback from several quarters before formulating a reply. I thank all of you on this forum who have provided us with inputs and constructive feedback to help us respond to your concerns.
I would like to particularly call attention to this sentence from the blog post:
We have just begun the modernization process and invite you to voice your opinion. We are committed to taking action on customer feedback and remaining as transparent as possible about our future plans.
In this context, it is worth noting that the Creative Cloud provides us with the flexibility to  quickly try and address issues and areas that fall within the purview of our shared vision for Dreamweaver.
    Thanks,

    Namaste Preranji,
