Either go directly to Intel and run their driver finder or use this thread.

Install the Chipset driver first, then the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, the rest doesn't matter.
Same for the NVIDIA driver, Notebook Review is up to date or you cab go directly to NVIDIA.

If you have an upgrade disc, then you can do a clean install as long as there is a Windows OS on the drive.
I have also done a clean install form an upgrade disc to on a new drive and it still works.
Glad the MoBo's doing well !    What kills them is if you do allot of gaming, the MoBo can't take the heat. The cooling system just isn't up to the task.

I tried to update the firmware but ran into some strange issues. First of all according to google, the drive is manufactured by Panasonic. Toshiba doesn't make their own drives? For this reason I wonder if it is improperly detecting the drive make/model.
Anyways I downloaded the firmware update for it, version 1.03. It is a MAT**bleep**A UJDA760 (going from memory, model may be slightly diff like UDJA). When I run the firmware update it doesn't detect the drive at all and says it is for a THINKPAD?? Weird...
Also, if you have a link to a guide for removing this drive I would appreciate it. I want to verify that windows is detecting the model/maker correctly. It is not one of the simple hotswap types, it looks like I have to remove at least the entire bottom of the laptop.
I am working on this for a client, I do tech repair on craigslist but my laptop hardware expertise is limited most of my experience is with desktops.

Typically if the optical drive can read CDs but not DVDs (or vice versa), there has been a hardware failure of the DVD or CD circuitry.  Drivers/firmware aren't going to solve the problem, only replacement of the drive.

  • Optical Drive does read CDs

    To Forum
My optical drive wont read 99% of CDs. Had it checked at the Apple store and no problems.
The same CDs that fail on my MBP work in all other computers, drives, CD Drives.
The drive will also play all DVDs
Why doesnt it like CDs? I've tried the usual cleaning of CD. Any other thoughts?

    Neville,
If you look around this forum you will see a dozen or more others all having the same problem, all starting around mid May.
My tale of woe: MBP 17" late 2008, OSX 10.5.8, Matsushita UJ-875 with DA09 firmware. Will not accept ANY CD media. Accepts and plays DVDs fine. CDs are ejected after several seconds. Rejected CDs work perfectly in other players/readers etc. Have used DVD/CD cleaning disc - repeatedly - with no effect.
Any help from you or anyone else appreciated.

  • My CD/DVD drive reads CDs but not DVDs

    Hi All
I have a TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633M DVD drive in my laptop and after about 6 months of use, the drive stopped reading/writing DVDs. It still reads CDs fine and occasionally will read a DVD (completely unprovoked and without warning...!) but is very temperamental and will randomly just stop reading a DVD. Often, the drive will eject and give an error message telling me to insert a disc. I'm not sure what to do.
I'm running Windows Vista 32-bit. I have tried running the Microsoft Fixit application, which recognises that the drive is failing to read DVDs but offers nothing more helpful than that and doesn't fix anything (despite its name...). I have been reading through a number of different forums and have found a range of advice: replacing the drive, uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers or editing the registry. What should I be doing to fix this problem? Naturally, I'd prefer not to have to replace the drive itself, but if that's the only way...
    Thanks in advance!

The registry thing only works if the drive is completely AWOL from the system so that it does not appear as a drive in "My Computer"....not your issue. The DVD and the CD use different lasers and it is not uncommon for one to go bad and the other not. You can check the function of the DVD by trying to boot from a bootable DVD. If you cannot the drive is bad and needs to be replaced. If it works sometimes and not others it could just need a good cleaning with a DVD lens cleaner.

  • DVD drive reads CDs but not DVDs

My DVD drive, CDDVDW TS-L633R, will read CDs, both music and data e.g. Epsom installation disc, but it will not read DVDs, videos or data e.g. MS Office installation disc.  I ran the CD/ DVD diagnosis software - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060/?wa=wsignin1.0 and the final message said that the disc (DVD) was not readable.

Means most likely the laser DVD is dead and the drive needs to be replaced.

  • CD drive reads CDs, but not DVDs

I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro 13. 2.3 GHz i5. I can no longer play DVDs. That goes for movie DVDs and DVDs with software. CDs will work just fine. Both music, data and software CDs. I have reset the SMC and couldn't find any more support. I'm thinking of replacing the whole Superdrive.

Try cleaning the lens first.  Use a lens cleaning DVD or wrap a fine microfiber cloth (eyeglasses cloth) around a business card.  Carefully insert it into the slot.
    Ciao.

  • Reads CDs, but not DVDs

I just bought iLife '09 for my iMac G5. When I went to put the disc in, it sat in the computer, spinning for a few minutes, until it spit it out. I tried putting in DVD movies too, and it did the same thing, but it always recognizes CD's and blank CD's. What can I do to install my new program?

Try the follow, since the drive seems to be working to some extent.
Go to System Preferences +CDs & DVDs+ pane. Change something. In this case, a good one may be +When you insert a video DVD+; change it to Ignore. Then insert a movie DVD and note if it mounts but is otherwise ignored. As long as it is not ejected, you may have fixed the issue. You can set it back to *Open DVD Player* or whatever you want, and it should perform that action. Hopefully, it will also now mount the data DVD with iLife.
Please post back, if that does not help.

  • Optical drive will no longer recognize DVDs

My optical drive is no longer recognizing DVDs. It just makes some noise and spits them back out.  It will read some CDs, and it recognized my expired AppleCare tech support disk, but not DVDs.  I have even tried several DVDs that I watched just a few days ago, and they are no longer recognized by my optical drive.
I checked Apple's optical drive troubleshooting page, and ended up resetting my SMC.  Nothing.
    Any ideas?
I would be very thankful for some help.

I guess the first question would be did it work immediately before the drive upgrade... and stop working immediately after the drive upgrade? That would seem to indicate that they may have damaged something when they did the upgrade. I'm not sure what your service rep meant by telling you that you need to "reinstall the optical drive from your OS disks". There isn't any special software needed for your drive to function properly. Can you read regular data DVDs okay (meaning if you put your Leopard DVD in... can you view the files on it?).

  • I have a MacBook which no longer reads CDs but still reads DVDs what is the beat thing to do?

I have a MacBook which I have had for a few years now. It nooner reads CDs but reads DVDs, can it be repaired and what is the best thing to do?

Unfortunately it sounds like the drive has to be replaced.
    1. You can do it yourself. You can find repair guides at http://www.ifixit.com/
    2. You can take it to your nearest Apple Store and have them do it.
    3. You can send it to somewhere like TechRestore http://www.techrestore.com/
    4. You can buy a cheap external drive.

  • USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs.

I bought a new USB super drive for a MacPro retina. It recognizes CDs but not DVDs. I am in region 1 and my DVDs are all region 1. This is the second drive so the problem seems to be in the computer. The problem is the same with battery power or AC adaptor. I  downloaded Adobe flash before I bought the USD super drive. Could this be the problem? Any suggestions? Thanks.

    MBP refers to Macbook Pro
Do the DVD spit out right away? (indicates a bad loader mech)
OR do the DVD spit out after several seconds (indicates a dirty laser diode lens) ?

  • Optical drive won't eject and can't power off from Apple menu!

I have a Quicksilver that has almost always acted great but ever since I physically moved the machine to another room I've been having intermittent problems. Here's a quick summary:
    -Overall more sluggish performance
-Occasionally the optical drive won't eject and I have to restart the whole machine. (I did replace the drive a couple years ago but have never had any problems until now).
-I can no longer shut down/restart from the apple menu, i have to push the power button in.
I used to get device removal error messages at inappropriate times but that seems to have stopped since I reseated my USB 2.0 card. Here's a list of the other remedies I have tried:
    -Repair permissions
-Make sure all cards/RAM seated properly
-Replaced PRAM battery (year was displaying 1970)
    -Ran DiskWarrior
    -Re-imaged entire boot drive
I can't remember if I've tried zapping the PRAM because this problem has been going on for about five months. None of this was an issue before I carted the machine into another room so hopefully I haven't dislodged anything. Also, I notice a lot of static build-up in the room despite the hardwood flooring. Perhaps that could be an issue and if so, any suggestions?
I was dreading that it could be my logic board, any advice?
    thanks,
    Jesse

Well....it may be fine for you to accept an inferior item, not I. I paid for a unit that was supposed to be fully operational and work as designed. I will not accept having to reboot every time I want to put a CD or DVD into my computer! That's like having to restart your car so the headlights work. Even if one doesn't drive at night, you would still expect the headlights to work ANYTIME you want them without the extra steps. I know "where" the issue is and I know "why" the issue is BUT unfortunately, there is not a fix I can find. Between uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and applications and etc. I give up. They will replace my unit according to Lenovo, with a brand new laptop. Should this one have the same issue, I will be disputing my CC charge, and sending the unit back to them for a full and complete refund. I wish I had a copy of WIn8 or Win7 without Lenovo's proprietary software embedded. I bet the unit would work as designed then, but to have them rewrite or add software with hooks directly into the core system is a recipe for disaster. I encourage you to do something about yours also. The more people that ALLOW this "type" manufactured fleecing, the more it will occur.
I guess I will find out just how well this replacement process works.

  • Superdrive plays cds but not dvds

My mini plays cds but not dvds.  Wouldn't this indicate a software, not hardware problem?

    Jeffrey Tashman wrote:

Not necessarily, the drive uses a different laser to read DVDs.

  • Can burn CDs but not DVDs

My CD/DVD drive worked fine until 3 weeks ago.  I tried to burn home movies to DVD using Nero and it stopped burning.  I restored my computer to factory condition and reinstalled Nero.  No help.  I bought a newer version of Nero and switched from Sony DVDs to Verbatim.  No help.  Then I discovered that I can send files to my Drive E: and burn CDs but not DVDs.
I downloaded all the Microsoft updates.  I have recovery discs but that is a lot of work all over again when I'm not even sure it will help.  I have 2 external drives where I keep my files and backup but I would still need to setup email and reinstall my programs.
I was about ready to buy a new drive for the computer when I saw on the internet that other people have this problem too.  I would really rather get the drive I have working.

    Hi,
Sounds like hardware problem, not software. Please clean the lens first, please try:

  • Satellite A60-302: CD drive read DVDs and CDs but not burned discs

I have a Toshiba laptop: Satellite A60-302 and I have a problem with the cd drive. It can read dvds and discs that I buy but it wont read all burned discs (even ones that I burned with the laptops own burner). Only from time to time it will read a burned disc.
I have tried cleaning the cd drives laser eye but it didnt help.
Does anyone know what the problem might be?

    Hi
This sounds like the CD burner doesnt burn CD properly.
You have suggested that you have used different kinds of CDs.
In the user manual you will find a list of compatible medias.
These medias was tested and should works properly.
But if this happens with all CDs so possibly the drive cannot works properly and only a replacement could solve this issue.

  • Won't read CDs but DVDs normal data and video

My mid 2007 has stopped recognizing CDs, blank, data, and video. It makes several attempts to read then ejects disk. I haven't tried to record DVDs but it reads video and data normally. Sugestions?

The slot-loading optical drives used in iMacs are notorious for failing, even under light infrequent use. If your iMac is covered under an extended 3-year AppleCare warranty, you can take your iMac to any local Apple store or authorised Apple dealer to get a new optical drive fitted free of charge. Your other option is to buy an external USB/FireWire drive instead of using your built-in drive - if you go for a standard 5.25" tray loader, these are cheap and reliable.
