Optical Drive making a beeping noise

This is really starting to drive me crazy. My macbook pro will every hour or so make a quick beeping and clicking noise near the optical drive. I dont have any apps open that would be trying to check to see if there is a disc and there are no discs in the drive when this happens. I can burn dvd/cd just fine its just that noise that is really starting to bother me I have had this since I got the computer from day one? Anyone else experience this?? Thanks!!

I have the same beeping noise but I can't tell where it is coming from exactly. Doesn't seem like it is the speakers though. It does seem to be front right corner somewhere near the optical drive. Mine is not very often so it is hard to trouble shoot.
My DVD drive also goes through a very noisy start up cycle, three times, each time I wake up the computer. A brand new (one week) 15.4" 2.53 GHz MBP. Does yours do this as well?

    Syamak,
You didn’t specify where the beeping noise is coming from.
If it’s coming through your speakers, you could try to update your audio drivers since it’s possible they’re incorrectly sending a signal to the speakers as the audio chipset enters standby.
If the noise is coming from the motherboard, you’ll need to take a closer look at your system’s configuration or contact the manufacturer.
    I hope this helps.

  • My Macbook Air shut down on the screen and is making a beeping noise every second. I tried charging it up unsuccessfully.

Please help. I was watching netlix last night and my computer just went dark. It began making a beeping noise every second. It would not turn on or all the way off. I tried charging it which changed nothing--not the screen nor the beeping.

if its continuous it cant be every 3 seconds, logically
1 beep  = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
    hardware fault regardless.  Still RAM
dead screen, no SMC reset possible, ergo:

  • IMac hard drive making a chirping noise!!

IMac hard drive making a chirping noise!! Its a quiet chirp that goes along with the hum of the hard drive. It doesn't always do it but I'm worried anyways. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a problem?

They told me it's likely the CPU Fan - a known issue - and said that resetting the SMU was the first step towards fixing it. I performed that reset, but the crickets in my machine are still alive and chirping. Step #2, as it was told, is to take the machine back to the Apple service center to be repaired. BUT - looking through other threads here on the same issue, it looks like the issue is currently handled by replacing the CPU fan with another identical model and that because the underlying engineering issue has not been fixed, the crickets will return.
So if this problem is not harmful to the computer, I may be ignoring it for the time being.
Regarding the recalls though, where did you find the serial number range for the recall? I should check mine against that list.

  • Making weird beeping noises

Does anyone know why an ipod mini might be making weird beeping noises. It makes like 9 beeping noises in a row, each note lower than the one previous. And it just keeps repeating this same 9 beeps. ??? Things seem to be working properly, but I worry that there is some kind of problem. Any help would be lovely .
    Thanks,
    Jamie

I recently restored my ipod. I completely erased all the songs off of it & everything. It still beeps. There doesn't seem to be much of a correlation of the beeping with anything. It usually does it right when I plug it into my computer. It does it quite frequently when plugged in - usually when I try to play certain songs on my iTunes. I tried deleting the songs that make it beep , but it doesn't get rid of the problem because sometimes the songs make it beep, sometimes it doesn't. While it is beeping, I can't do anything in iTunes - it totally locks up. When it beeps when it's not plugged into the computer, it's usually when I select a song to play - no music is played and after the beeping stops, it skips the song I originally chose & goes to the next song. I'm not sure what to do from here. Should I delete all the songs off of my computer, reformat it again? I'd rather not... for many of the songs I have, the only copies I have are on the computer and it would take way too long to put them all on CD - so I'd rather not have to do that. Let me know if you have any idea on what I can do to remedy this problem. Thanks, Jamie

  • Optical drive making squealing noise

all of a sudden my optical drive is making a high pitched squealing noise. also i've been able to burn dvd+r and now it just spits them out. i've had my mac for less then two years. this is my first mac (pc user for years) i really hope its not breaking down already. any help would be great.

It does sound like a fault with the optical drive. It is the noise that bothers me. I would still try clearing the pram if you haven't as yet (hold down applealt+pr while booting up, and wait to hear the 3rd chime before releasing them) and possibly resetting the SMC (unlikely solution), but that would not account for the noise.

  • New RAM and hard drive won't connect to computer.  It's still making the beeping noise.  Any ideas?

My computer stopped working and I thought it was my RAM and hard drive so I bought a new one of each of these.  However, when I tried turning my computer back on after replacing them, it still made the beeping noise.  I am clueless.  Does anyone know what could be the cause and how to fix it.  Thanks!!

What machine specs? What type of RAM and HDD?

  • Optical Drive making eject noise

I have a brand new Satellite E205 with an optical CD/DVD drive.
I've found that it's very sensitive to movement as anytime the machine gets slightly moved or I'm working with it on my bed, it will repeatedly make an eject noise.
Is there a way to disable/turn off the optical drive? Is this behavior normal?

    Hello,
I think there is no way to disable the dvd drive in your computer(you can check power option) Is it really an ejecting sound or like a ticking sound? You might enable the acoustic silencer in your computer
you can go to Start> All programs> Toshiba>CD/DVD> acoustic silencer
if that option is not there it could be something else

  • Cd drive making a strange noise

recently I have noticed that my cd drive on my powerbook has been making a very loud annoying noise when it speeds up to mount or finalize a disc
is it on "death row"????? should I replace it??????

Hi, t. If the drive is still performing all its functions satisfactorily, then you obviously don't have to replace it. But if the noise is unacceptably annoying, replacement is certainly an option.
Any optical drive makes a lot more noise when an unbalanced disc is spinning in it. An unlabeled blank disc certainly shouldn't be unbalanced, but some poorly-made ones can be, and any disc that has a user-applied label is likely to be unbalanced. Running a drive with unbalanced discs puts a lot of extra wear on the spindle bearing. Once that bearing is worn, the drive will be noisy even when it's spinning a perfectly balanced disc.
There's no room at all inside a Powerbook for any sound-damping material, and the metal case certainly does nothing to damp noise. So when anything in a Tibook gets noisy, whether it's the fans, hard drive or optical drive, it can be very annoying. It's up to you to decide how much noise you can stand before replacing your drive.

  • Charger making a beeping noise and not charging.

Hi all, I have a problem with my 6 month old computer. The charger is making a constant beeping noise when plugged in and switched on.
It doesn't charge as well. I don't believe the battery has been overworked yet.
Has anyone any help, advice or tips please.
    Thank you. Best regards, Sarah.

    Hello
I agree with the user above. You should contact nearest authorized service provider to get a new AC/DC adaptor and let the guys check your notebook. Maybe this problem is related to the notebook too so you should ask for professional help.
If your notebook is only 6 months old, you will get a new adaptor for free I think because its a warranty case.
    Good luck! :)

  • Optical drive fan speed - and noise

I have a new 27" i7 3.4Ghz iMac and I'm extremely pleased with it's functionality, performance and good looks; however, a consistent and irritating "chugging" noise has just started to be heard ...or perhaps it's that I've just become aware of it. Anyway, having trawled the communities here and run iStat Pro it seems the optical drive fan is running 10% faster than default at about 1150RPM although the drive is not being used and the temp is low at 30 degrees.
Might this speed be the cause of the noise and why would it be over-speed anyway if the optical drive is not being used? And can I re-set it back to default without stuffing up the iMac??
Other data seems quite normal at:
    CPU          939 RPM          32 degrees
    HD          1101 RPM           29 / 35 degrees
    Ambient                            16 degrees

    Hello
at first check that you have no disk left in the drive.
According to Apple Support, reset SMC if the drive or the fan behavior seems not normal.
    How to --> http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
If the drive produce an unusual series of noises after startup or system wake up from sleep, you may reset the optical drive as described below.
Insert a CD or DVD almost all the way into the drive. (until the drive want to start pulling in the disk)
On this point remove the disc.
Insert the disc fully into the optical disc drive.

  • Optical Drive making horrible sounds upon boot!

I have a black Macbook, and my Optical Drive is making horrible sounds when I boot. Now, I'm not sure if it's the Optical Drive or the HDD, but it's coming from the upper right-hand corner.
If this helps, I dropped it earlier today and I could have damaged it. I know the difference between the way it normally sounds when it boots and this. This kind of sounds like when you're inserting a CD into the Optical Drive, but far worse? The sound also happens when you press the Eject button.
Please help me, I need to know if I should bring it into an Apple Store immediately.

I have a mcabook 13 inch (white, not black LOL) that does the same thing. It was used by a guy at my work (it is a work laptop) and when he returned it to me (I am the IT guy) it wouldnt boot up. Warranty fixed this, but the grind is still there. This is the same guy who destroyed the screen on his PC laptop by dropping it down some stairs. So no doubt he has dropped this mac, which I have decided will stay in my personal care
Have you had any info on the issue?

Is it constantly beeping or is it beeping when you place it on the touchstone? If you place it on the touchstone and it beeps this is expected behavior. Also note that you could be bumping the device shifting it off the charger and then back on thus the beeping noise telling you that it has been realigned again properly and is charging properly.

  • Cd drive making a funny noise

    CD/DVD drive wont work

In all honesty, it seems odd that your trackpad was working fine and you were not experiencing hard drive issues until after you submitted it for repairs. Was this directly with Apple or an Apple Authorized Repair Center? I guess it's possible that they ran a hardware test and realized the drive "may" be failing, but I would expect that they would give you the option to replace it vs. indicating it had failed. It sort of sounds like they had issues when they opened it up to replace the optical drive. You can purchase an extended warranty at your own option. The purpose of the extended warranty is exactly as its name implies... to extend your warranty. Apple gives you a year in which to do so. You have experienced problems while in your initial warranty, so fortunately those repairs were covered. If you were to want an additional two years of coverage, you would need to purchase the extended warranty just like anyone else. I'm just a little skeptical with respect to the other two issues arising after you brought it in for repair... I'd be more so if it were an authorized service center vs. directly with Apple. I would either definitely want to be confident that they did a good job... or go for an extended warranty.
