Options for VGA to S video/ composite video over Mini displayport

I have a mid 2009 13" macbook pro that i want to connect to a standard def tv with s video and composite inputs. I already own the mini displaport to VGA adapter. I have found two adapters on amazon that convert VGA to s/composite video. one is $4 and is just a cable. The other is a $40 box with vga input and video output. my question is, do i need to shell out for the expensive one or will the cheap cable do just fine? i have heard NTSC out a lot while poking around. does my computer have that?
Adapter #1 (cheap one) http://tinyurl.com/yc6topv
Adapter #2 (expensive one) http://tinyurl.com/yd6qnvs
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Hello, I am first time forums user and a new mac owner.
What I am having trouble with is a very similar thing but I have a brand new macbook pro 17 so I am pretty sure my connector is slightly different. I found this...
http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9319G/A
This seems to be a connector which comes out of the mini-dvi port and has a connector for rca/svideo. I have a mini-dvi to vga that I bought with the mac and then I have an old vga to rca/s-video connector cable like the cheap option the original poster gave.
My mac responds as it should but the tv signal is totally screwed up. I also tried hooking it to a projector using rca and that said no signal. The mini-dvi port to vga works but I am not 100% on the vgs to rca connector I haven't used it in so long. It is going to be a pain for me to test it though.
Should this work? DO I need to mess around with refresh rates?
Thanks

  • No Video from Mini-DisplayPort or DVI, only Dual-Link DVI

Just got my new Mac Pro 6-Core delivered. Out of the box, there were problems. I have a Dell 27" monitor that takes Dual-Link DVI, DisplayPort, or HDMI and a Dell 22" monitor that takes DVI, VGA, or HDMI. I am using a DisplayPort to Mini-DisplayPort cable to connect my 27" monitor to the Mac Pro and a DVI cable for my 22" monitor. I have the ATI 5870 graphics card installed OEM.
The problem is that the graphics card appears to not be switching to Mini-DisplayPort or DVI for output. It only works when I plug in a Dual-Link DVI cable to my 27" monitor. At that point, I get a video feed on my screen on a hard boot. At this point, I can then plug in my Mini-DisplayPort cable to my Mac Pro and unplug the Dual-Link DVI cable, and it switches video feeds perfectly. The problem then is that when I restart the computer, or power off and power on, the problem starts all over again. I HAVE to boot using the Dual-Link DVI cable for anything to work.
Ideas? Called AppleCare, waiting on engineering to see what they have to say. All the cables work perfectly when I plug them into my MacBook Pro (Late 2008). I am stumped.

I seem to be having similar problems. I bought the same system (6-core Westmere with the 5870 graphic card installed OEM) last month and I seem to be having problems running two Dell monitors which I know to be perfectly fine.
For the past month, I've been using a 24" Dell U2410 monitor with my Mac Pro using a DVI cable. Absolutely no problems at all. I then purchased another 24" Dell U2410 with the intention of running with dual displays. To prepare for this, I bought two mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort cables from Monoprice. When I finally received the second display, I turned off the computer, hooked up both monitors through DisplayPort using the two mini-DisplayPort connections on the graphics card and turned on the system. I got two black screens. I tried to use keyboard commands to bring up the shutdown dialog box but it wasn't working. So I was forced to do a hard shutdown by holding down the power button for 10 seconds.
I went through a series of combinations of power cycles for the displays and computer and still two black screens. Finally, I went back to square one, a single display through a DVI cable. Again, a black screen. At this point, I disconnected the display from the computer. Power cycled the display (this initiates the self-test for the Dell display), hooked it up to the Mac Pro, turned it on, and it worked. I had one working display. Then I plugged in the second display using the mini-DisplayPort to Display port cable and that worked also. Finally, two working displays. For some reason, the Mac Pro recognized the display using the DisplayPort as the primary monitor. I rebooted the Mac Pro and the monitors continued to work properly. I booted into Windows 7 and again, no problems. I went back to OS X and used the computer for the night. When I was done, it put it to sleep.
This morning, when I tried to wake it up, same problems. I had to go through a series of power cycles and cable swapping to finally get a single screen to work.
I went through some of the troubleshooting documents here in the Support area and found this one:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4279
I am going to pick up the Apple mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter and try running the display as two DVI monitors. Hopefully this will fix those problems. If the AppleCare engineer is able to give you anymore information, please let us know. This is a worrisome issue.

  • Tecra A11 - No Video via mini DisplayPort

    Hi There,
I just recently purchased a mini DisplayPort -> HDMI cable to be used with my Tecra A11 Notebook. My intention was to run two external displays by running a VGA cable to my LG W2242 Monitor and run the mini-DP to HDMI cable to my HP 2509m Monitor. Unfortunately I cannot get my HP monitor to recognize the Video Signal from the mini DIsplayPort.
I have downloaded the newest drivers for my laptop, but still no luck. Is there anything special I need to do to get the mini DisplayPort to send a Video Signal?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Landon

The Tecra A11 I have purchased (the A11-00N) only has two external video ports; A mini DisplayPort and a VGA.
I am currently running the Tecra A11 hooked up via the VGA Port to my HP 2509m Monitor. When unplugging the VGA cable and attempting to use just the mini DisplayPort to attach a SINGLE external Monitor I still have trouble getting a signal.
@Andrej - I'm currently attempting to attach 2 external monitors while closing the lid of the built-in display. In any case this should work as the laptop would still be only running 2 displays total.
What troubles me is that the mini DisplayPort doesn't work in a single display setup. I am going to attempt using the cable with a MacBook Pro later today and hopefully it will help in pointing to the root of the problem.

  • Best mp4 options for high quality HD video?

I'm importing video from a 1080i AVCHD camcorder into iMovie 08 and when I'm exporting to mp4 format using Quicktime the resulting video is horribly pixelated. I've tried the same with Final Cut Express and I'm getting the same results so I'm assuming the issue is with the settings I'm choosing for the export.
    I'm trying:
    MPEG4 Basic
    7200kbps frame rate
    1920x1080 HD
    Frame rate = current
Just how high does the data rate have to go to keep the equivalent video quality from the camera as if it's plugged directly into the TV? If I plug it into the TV the video quality is sharp with no pixelation - the results of the compression using MPEG4 make the video look like its been taken with a cheap helmet cam

I'm having a similar problem. Everything looks great when I burn to DVD, but if I'm exporting the file online it's a disaster.

  • Looking for protection options for my 30 g. video 5th gen. iPod.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is the best product to protect my new toy? I was looking at the rubber cases but my baby is the black iPod and I don't want to spoil its beauty and simplicity with a stupid rubber case that makes it look weird -- not to mention mess with the beautiful colour. I would like something that plays thru so that the entire unit (except for the earplug and charge outlet) is completely surrounded, encased and safe!
I have been looking at little cases but my concern is dirt, dust et al because this baby is so small, I don't want it to get ruined, scratched or nicked.
I hesitate to buy the cases I have seen here because I like to look, touch and feel the stuff I buy when it comes to protectants for my toys.
Can anyone give me suggestions as to a really nice cover (preferrably clear) that I can purhcase which will be like armor for this little gadget?
PS: I have noticed that there's not a lot of cases for the iPod -- more for the nano, mini and older generations. Is that my imagination? Am I just looking in the wrong places? While I think the Nano is cute, once you get 30 Gs it's hard to go back to 2.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    Hi jmgmacgirl,
IMHO, the best option is the clear plastic cases. They do not take any of the ipod's beauty away and allow the same functionality as without the case. My personal favorite (And only recently released) is one from ContourCase. However, there are others that are similar.
    Enjoy your iPod

  • Limited options for VGA display

When I connect my new intel MBP to a monitor it does not give me the resolution options to fill the screen fully. On my older G4 Mini Mac, and an earlier model intel MBP (running 10.4) I was able to set the resolution to 1440 by 900 and it would give me a full screen on the laptop and the TV.
On this MBP I can only set it up to 1280 by 960 at 60 hz, which creates bars on the side of the laptop screen and cuts off the edges of the screen on the computer.

  • Does the mini displayport able to transfer audio and video to an external monitor (example: a tv) using a 2011 13" MacBook Pro with an hdmi cable?

I was wondering this, because I want to hook up my 2011 MacBook Pro to a external monitor (TV) using an hdmi cable.  This would be heplful before I buy a mini displayport to hdmi adapter, and then maybe find out that the mini displayport might not transfer audio, only video.

Yes, min Displayport supports audio and video for the 2011 MBP 13" via HDMI.

  • Mini DisplayPort - VGA and MBP 2011 not working

    Hi,
I can't get my 13" mbp 2011 to connect to VGA screens. I've bought a mini DisplayPort to VGA converter (an Apple one, not a no name) and if I connect a display over VGA the screen stays black. My mbp recognizes the display, I can see the display's model, resolution etc but no signal. I've tried multiple screens, none work.
I don't have other converters so I can't test if HDMI screens for example do work.
    Anyone else having this problem?

I have a 2011 13" i7 and am having the same issue when connecting it to my LG TV through the HDMI adapter. However when I connect it to my HP external monitor it works but it's VERY blurry... so blurry that it hurts the eyes to look at it for more than a few mins.
My previous MBP (2010 13") works fine however with both the TV and monitor. I even reconnected it just to make sure and they both work flawlessly.
I only have 14 days total to return this new MBP and 5 of those days are used up so if I can't get this fixed by then I have no choice but to return it and go back to my old MBP.

  • [T420] VGA to S-video or composite video

I want to connect a T420 to an older TV.  Can I use this VGA to s-video/composite adapter?  The website says:
"Your  video card MUST be able to support s-Video or Composite out through it's VGA port. This is known as a TV out function. If you don't know if your video card can do this, then call the card manufacturer and ask them "Does my video card support S-Video or Composite Video out through its VGA port?""
So, does the video card in the T420 (Intel HD 3000) support S-Video or Composite Video out (more importantly composite video) through its VGA port?

    Hi biznatch!
The T420 does not support s-Video or Composite out through it's VGA port. You need an active VGA converter box.
    Hope this helps!

  • External Video Monitor Not an Option for Simulator

In the preferences pane for simulator Playback Output options, I am only able to simulate in the simulator window. It doesn't even give me the option to select any external video devices, even when plugged in (and detectable by other programs like FCP). I've even reinstalled DVD Studio Pro 4.02 and it hasn't solved the problem. Help anyone?

    Hey, Aldershot. Glad it helped.
it still baffles me that with almost all the other so called Pro Apps manage to have broadcast monitor support
The problem is that Apple is really innovating with OpenGL, and this bring a lot of benefits but also some inconveniences. Notice that Motion's frame rate falls to half when you enable video out with a Decklink, AJA or even Firewire DV. And in DVD SP you have this limitation. Looks like routing the signal from AGP to PCI is the problem.
But going out through s-video!!!! yeah lets just through all our hard work out the window.
Please don't take this as I pretenend to know it all, but you know what? IMHO, Super video is really underrated. It's much closer to Component than it is to Composite. For a lot of professionals, myself included,it wouldn't be that easy to tell Y/C appart from Component, while the difference from either to Composite is gigantic
We need to view this in true RGB space.
Actually, it is RGB What it probably isn't is YUV. But it is probably more reliable as a preview than Firewire DV, for the reasons I explained in the previous message.
I know is a compromise solution. For me, the worst part is that you either loose a second computer display or have to buy a new AGP card with a separate Super video output.
    All the best.

  • VGA to S-video or composite video adapter

I need some way to get the video output of my computer to my T.V. The computer has no S-video or anything other outputs for video besides the VGA one. And I don't have a T.V. with VGA input. Has anyone ever seen an adapter for something like this? I know I can get a splitter for the VGA so I can keep my monitor plugged in at the same time, but I need something to convert the VGA for the T.V.

    Welcome, jacob1982!
Could you please post which TV model or which inputs
the TV does have?  I ask this because if
you have HDMI input on the TV then you just need a
    cable and a converter
adapter.  You can split VGA output by
    using this VGA
Splitter. I looked on bestbuy.com for a VGA to S-Video adapter I had once
purchased but it appears we may not have them anymore? You can also try going
into your local store for assistance (hint: these adapters may be found in the
    TV area).

  • Export Video but no option for sound

I would be grateful if anyone could offer any suggestions on how to fix an audio issue with exporting video from Photoshop.
I am choosing the quicktime format however the option for sound is alwas greyed out.  from the animation panel I have the audio enabled and I can hear it when I play back from within Photoshop.
I am using Photoshop CS4 extended on PC Windows 7
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
    I understand the following -
For audio I need to choose Quicktime format
Photoshop is primarily image editing software (with video capabilities)

Here is a past post, hope this helps.

    JP,
I do not have my CS5 Extended handy, so will go from the Premiere Pro (Adobe's video editor) side of the street. Bear with me on this, as PS-Extended might do things a bit differently.
When one is Exporting an AV file, there are two things that must be set:
Exporting both Audio & Video (in PrPro, these are done via checkboxes in the Export>General dialog screen)
Then, one must set Multiplexing * on the Export>Multiplexing dialog screen, to anything but "None." The choice is usually "DVD."
It's the Multiplexing Tab, that many miss. If set to None, then there will be two separate Export files - one for the Video stream, and one for the Audio stream.
Hope that gets you close, and sorry that I cannot open things up, and give you the exact screens and tabs in PS-Extended.
    Hunt
    * Multiplexing is the combining of both the Audio & Video streams into a single, discrete file. Multiplexing is usually OFF by default, though in PrPro, it's a "sticky," in that it retains the last setting, so if the user wishes to make a change, they must do so manually, and that setting will then stick, until changed again. The Export of separate files for Audio & Video is most often used, when one is doing the Export to go to a DVD, or BD authoring program, like Adobe Encore. It works best with elemental streams, rather than muxed files, and especially with MPEG Audio.
