ORA-12514 with Easy Connect only

Greetings,
On linux with a recent local install of Oracle XE:
$ echo ORACLE_SID
XE
$ sqlplus system...works fine with nothing output to listener.log. I can connect no problem. However if I try:
$ sqlplus system@localhost:1521/XEI get the following in listener.log:
08-SEP-2008 14:03:11 * (CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=XE)(CID=(PROGRAM=sqlplus)(HOST=my.host.local)(USER=oracle))) * (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=127.0.0.1)(PORT=42572)) * establish * XE * 12514
TNS-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptorTnsping works:
$ tnsping XE
*+...+*
Used TNSNAMES adapter to resolve the alias
Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521)) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVER = DEDICATED) (SERVICE_NAME = XE)))
OK (0 msec)My tnsnames.ora is:
$ cat /usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server/network/admin/tnsnames.ora
# tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File:
XE =
  (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
      (SERVER = DEDICATED)
      (SERVICE_NAME = XE)
EXTPROC_CONNECTION_DATA =
  (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
      (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC_FOR_XE))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
      (SID = PLSExtProc)
      (PRESENTATION = RO)
  )I put the listener in trace at the SUPPORT level. I can post that dump as well if it would help?
Without the Easy Connect connection identifier is it that I'm connecting via IPC? This is preventing me from remotely connecting via sqlplus or JDBC over an SSH tunnel of 1521 (the box is firewalled).
Thanks!
Ian

Well, I've gotten it to work by changing 'localhost' to 'myhost.mydomain.local' (name changed to protect the innocent) in tnsnames.ora and listener.ora, adding myhost.mydomain.local to my local DNS server such that it resolves to eth0's external IP, and restarting oracle. After that...

The command completed successfully...which is notably different from before. After that I can connect with:
sqlplus system/password@localhost/XEAlso of note, using the external IP directly in tnsnames.ora and listener.ora did not work.
So my new question is, why does Oracle need a HOST=hostname--where hostname resolves to an external IP--to startup correctly? Though I have 1521 firewalled from the outside world it seems like an unnecessary security hole.

  • ORA-12514 error while connecting to server

    I am using instantclient to connect to Oracle 9i server.
    The connection string is given using this format
    //host:[port][service name].
    In our development environment we can successfully connect to the server. But the connection fails in the production environment giving ORA-12514 error. This occurs even when we copy the instant client dll's onto separate folder and set the library loading path to this folder.
    Can u please help me in resolving this problem.

    Vinay,
    Since you are using Windows, are you setting PATH (the lib loading path of Windows)?

  • ORA-12519 with servlet connect

    Hi,
    I'm facing a strange behaviour on my tomcat webserver with a servlet. I'm using Oracle 10g as the database and try to access it with my servlet.
    The doPost-method throws the following exception while trying to establish the connection to the RDBMS:
    "SQLException:
    Connecting not possible:
    Listener refused the connection with the following error:
    ORA-12519, TNS:no appropriate service handler found The Connection descriptor used by the client was: localhost:1521:DBTEN"
    After starting my servlet, the connection to the database for other applications blocks with the same error message
    for a few minutes. After these few minutes connecting to the database is possible again!!! Restarting the database and the listener also helps...
    public void doPost( HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response ) throws IOException, ServletException {
    Connection conn = null;
    response.setContentType( "text/html" );
    PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
    String connStr = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:DBTEN";
    try{
    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
    }catch( ClassNotFoundException cnf ){
    out.println( "CNFException: "+cnf.getMessage() );
    //retrieve Connection
    try{
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection( connStr, "scott", "tiger" );
    }catch( SQLException sqle ){
    out.println( "SQLException: <BR> Connecting not possible: <BR> "+sqle.getMessage()+"<BR>" );
    When I put that part in a 'normal' main program everything is ok. I can connect to the database and access tables with select statements and everything is ok.
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    Connection conn = null;
    //retrieve Connection
    try{
    String connStr = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:DBTEN";
    try{
    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
    }catch(ClassNotFoundException cnf){
    System.out.println( "CNFException: "+cnf.getMessage() );
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection( connStr, "scott", "tiger" );
    }catch( SQLException sqle ){
    System.out.println( "SQLException:"+sqle.getMessage() );
    Does anyone have an idea what the problem is in this case?
    Regards,
    Lars

    "Note: The use of the DriverManager class to establish a connection to a database is deprecated." --
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25329_01/doc/appdev.102/b25320/getconn.htm
    To open a connection use something like this:
    OracleDataSource ods = new OracleDataSource();
    ods.setUser("username");
    ods.setPassword("password");
    ods.setURL("jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:XE");
    ods.getConnection();
    Instead of this:
    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver");
    DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:XE", "username", "password");

  • Frm-40375 and ora-306500 with ODBC connection

    Hi experts,
    I am getting frm-40375 , ora-306500 when clicking a button on form , the code behind the button is actually connecting to a database other than oracle using the ODBC connection and importing data in variables and than inserting in an oracle table.
    The error only appears on other PCs and not on my pc , means there is no problem in the code and is working fine on my pc (importing the desired data when using my pc).
    The question is what is missing on other PCs or in other words what is additional component in my PC.
    Please tell when and why this ora-306500 occurs.
    Hope I defined the problem correctly.
    (the following is part of the code

    ora-306500I seriously doubt this is actual error code.
    AFAIK - Oracle errors have not yet reached 6 decimal places.

  • Ora-00164 with generic connectivity

    Hello:
    I have an Oracle 9iR2 database over linux RHAS 2.1 and try to replicate data to an informix server. For that purpose i have another oracle 9i over windows 2000 (brige) to make the replication using database triggers on tables in the Ora9i windows database. When i make transactions directly on the windows database, the data is replicated without problems to the informix server, but when i make the transactions on the linux database to the tables on the windows database via dblink the ora-00164 fires. I use autonomous-transaction on the triggers over the windows databse to make the replication.
    Is there any way to overcome this problem??????
    Any other alternative to make the replication work will be helpful.
    Thanks

    Regards,
    DanielORA-12514 ALWAYS only occurs due to a problem on DB Server system.
    One cause of this problem is when the Oracle database is down & needs to be started.
    A remote client send a request to the Listener asking to be connected to a specific service.
    If/when the listener does not know anything about that service, the listener responds with ORA-12514
    Since every connection request to the listener gets logged, listener.log file will contain a line with 12514 as status code.
    This line contains valuable debugging details. So post this line & surrounding lines.

  • Windows "Easy Connect" does not reply with the password / "Easy Connect is not Available"

    Hello,
    I have posted a related question some time ago, which was eventually resolved. However, after some time a problem with Easy Connect (used for MSRA) came back:
    Whenever I arrive at the point in setting up a MSRA session where Easy Connect is needed, I get the reply: "Easy Connect is not Available". Here is an example of the problem:
    Start MSRA
    --> as expected, a window with "invite someone to help you" and " Help some who has invited you" appears
    Select "invite someone to help you"
    --> as expected, a window with "Who do you want to get help from" appears
    Select "Invite someone to help you"
    --> as expected, a windows with "How do you want to invite your trusted helper?" appears
    Select "Use Easy Connect"
    --> as expected, the temporary "Create invitation window / checking network capabilities" window appears
    Next, I would expect this windows to close a new window to provide me with the Easy Connect password. However, instead I get the window "Easy Connect is not available".
    I cannot continue. (I have screenshots so can repost with them if that would clarity my question)
    Any suggestion how to resolve would be appreciated.
    (Please do not reply with the 3 suggestions from the FAQ (both computers must run windows 7 / Access to internet is limited / your router does not support Easy Connect - doesn't help)
    More background information and things I have tried:
    The "Easy Connect is not available" window offers the "Tell me more about how to fix this problem" which I have tried, but those suggestions do not help
    If I use the other MSRA option: "Help someone who has invited you" (this would be my typical use case), followed by "help someone new" and than select "Use Easy Connect", I also get the "Easy Connect is not available"
    window instead of the expected option to enter the Easy Connect password. I believe this is that same problem.
    This happed with both the 32 as well as the 64 MSRA versions
    I'm using Window 7 Ultimate, 64 bit with all the latest updates
    This desktop PC is wired to the internet via an Edimax gigabit switch, a Dlink DIR-855 wireless router and a fiber modem in bridge mode
    The W7 desktop has a single active network connection only
    I'm using Windows Firewall and Windows Security Essentials
    Disabling the firewall on the PC did not help
    Network discovery is enabled in Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings (that’s UPnP – right?)
    The Internet Connectivity Evaluation Tool does not seem to be available anymore from MSFT sites
    Restarting "Peer Name Resolution Protocol" did not help
    Restarting "Peer Networking Identity Manager Properties" did not help
    Starting up with a "Clean Boot" (disabled all non-Microsoft services using MSConfig) did not help
    I would also be interested to understand how I can check on the status of the "Easy Connect" service. Is this a service hosted somewhere, or??
    Thanks!

    Dear Andy,
    Thanks a lot for your reply. Let me answer your questions:
    Q: Could you use the other methods: save this invitation as a file and use e-mail to send invitation?
    A: yes, that way I can establish a MSRA connection
    Q: Have you disable other network connections, including disable all virtual network card?
    A: if I check with ‘Device Manager/Network Adapters’ (or Control Panel/Network and Internet/Network Connections) I see two network adapters (my Asus motherboard has two network connectors). Both are available, but only one is used. I have
    disabled one. Unfortunately, this does not solve the problem. I will leave it disable for now.
    Q: To find detailed information about this issue, please locate to event view and find the logs about remote assistance.
    A: I have to admit that the Event Viewer is unfamiliar territory for me. So, I’m not sure where and what to look for. However, as suggested, I found "Event Viewer (local)/Applications and Services Logs/Microsoft/Windows/Remote assistance/Operational".
    Each time, I attempt to use MSRA/Easy Connect, it seems two entries are added. As I cannot seem to upload files with this post, here are just the two entries:
    “Diagnosis Repro Attempt resulted in a failure.”
    “Remote Assistance troubleshooting has confirmed the problem: Remote Assistance Easy Connect isn't available.”
    If you need more details, please suggest what to forward or check. I'm eager to find a solution!

  • Multiple Data Source (for FAILOVER) in Easy Connect Naming method

    Hi All,
    I was wondering if there is a way to specify multiple addresses as part of data source property in the connection string when trying to connect to Oracle with Easy Connect Naming method? this is basically for failover scenario.
    I know its straight forward, if i use Connect Descriptor. But not sure how to do it with EZConnect
    For ex. this is what I want to achieve with EZConnect
    sales.us.example.com=
    (DESCRIPTION=
    (ADDRESS_LIST=
    (LOAD_BALANCE=off)
    (FAILOVER=ON)
    *(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=sales1-server)(PORT=1521))*
    *(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=sales2-server)(PORT=1521)))*
    (CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=sales.us.example.com)))
    I appreciate your suggestions...
    Thanks

    You might get better answers in one of the DB forums from a generic fail-over perspective as EZconnect isn't specific to ODP.NET.
    I don't know if there's a way to do it or not with EZConnect version of the connect string, but you can certainly provide the fully qualified connect string without using tnsnames.ora..
    constring = "data source=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(LOAD_BALANCE=off)(FAILOVER=ON)(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=sales1-server)(PORT=1521))(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=sales2-server)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=sales.us.example.com))); user id=scott;password=tiger"
    Hope it helps,
    Gres

  • DB nonresponsive with ORA-12514 after weeks of running fine

    I have seen many prior users complain about getting ORA-12514 after a reboot after installation, and looking at the suggestions, I couldn't find anything addressed a situation where the whole system works for a long period of time and then stops working.
    I have a working APEX installation that I can access over the web from remote clients
    I have a working JDBC connection that I can use from several remote clients.
    After several weeks/months of happily running, I no longer can access the apex website, and I can no longer access the db through the JDBC connection getting:
    ORA-12514, TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect
    descriptor
    The Connection descriptor used by the client was:
    //###.###.###.###:1521/XE
    Going to look at Windows services, both OracleServiceXE and OracleXETNSListener are still running. To try and recover, I do the following:
    * Stop the db and start the db. (Which simply stops OracleServiceXE, and then starts both it and the listener)
    Doesn't fix it
    * Thinking that the listener might be the problem, I then stop the db, and also manually stop the listener. I then start both of the services
    Doesn't fix it
    * I reboot the computer
    Fixes it.
    What is different about rebooting the computer that could possibly fix this? Also, someone had suggested in another thread to look at the listener log in db_1/network/admin/listener.log. I don't know what db_1 is, but I have a oraclexe\app\oracle\product\10.2.0\server\NETWORK\ADMIN directory that does not have this log. If anyone has any insight into what this is, or what log I should look at to identify it, I would be greatly appreciative.
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Thanks!
    Ah, the alert log, that is a useful find. For those who don't know, you can find where the alert log is stored by doing the following:
    select value from v$parameter where name = 'background_dump_dest';
    I looked at the alert log, and i think it indicates that the process is running out of memory. Since it can run for a very long time without this, I'm assuming it's some kind of memory leak. Especially since I think the less I develop pages with APEX, the longer the system goes between crashing (That is only anecdotal). I looked at the .trc files that it spit out as well, but they seem to have internal stack traces and dumps. Where do I go from here? Is this something I post to an Oracle bug list? Below is the relevant section of the alert log:

    I've select from Oracle Universal Installer the default setings (Enterprise option and orcl database name) ;
    In Computer Management-> Services I have only "OracleOraDb10g_home1TNSListener"
    service; The "Orcl" database services has been removed when I hit the "Abort" option (when I received ORA-12514 error);
    Anyone can iluminate me with this problem?
    A few months ago I've installed the 10g product version with no error!
    Before I try to install 10g relese 2(beta), I read plenty of documentation about installing the new verision of 10g release 2, and I removed any trace from old 10g Oracle (directories, registry, environment variabile,etc)
    The problem is that I can't install now even the old 10g version!
    I've tried on another Pc (this PC, let's say "never hear before the word ORACLE" and have the same config winXP+sp2) ..and again the same ORA-12514 error appear!
    Because I could install the old 10g on my T43 laptop a few mounths ago with no error, I think the only explanation is that the windows updates, which I 've upgrade my laptop in this time cause the Oracle instalation/create database services to crush!
    Am I right...? what can I do? ... I realy need the ORACLE 10g to move on it, my old Oracle 9 databases, and continue my development work!
    Thanks! Have a nice day!
    XaM

    I see your tnsnames.ora does not contain an entry for service_name srvdzt43 , so EZCONNECT (or hostname) resolution is used, this is possible because service_name and hostname are the same.
    There's a known problem with EZCONNECT connections, if a connect string is provided, but no password (throws ORA-12514), maybe there's something like that in the DB creation scripts.
    I recommend you add a proper connect string into tnsnames.ora and try again.

    The database is up and running and I've stopped-started the listener.
    Still the error occurs. Could anyone suggest what can be done.
    Regards,
    Souvik

    The error basically means that the connection service which you are requeting in your connection string is not yet to known to the listener of yours. See here the output of the listener's supported services from your post.

    It clearly shows that the listener is only working to listen for the PLSExtproc service which is meant for external procedures.
    Is the database just started? If that's the case than it may take a while to get the PMON register the db with the listener. Or you can issue,
    alter system register from your db's sql prompt which can ask listener for immediately register the db with it. Try this command and post feedback. If that won't work than you may have to manualy register your db with the listener.
