Oracle doesn't care
Kindly give me your advise and tips that will be veryhelpfull for me as ORACLE dba.
As others have said, the best recommendation is to download either VMplayer (free from VMware) or VMworkstation (about US$185 from VMware, but with better management tools than the free version) or VirtualBox (free from Oracle, but not quite as easy to work with as VMware). With any of these tools you can create a virtual machine on your laptop/desktop. On that virtual machine you can install Oracle Linux (free from Oracle). Once you have that built, you can download and install any Oracle product you want -- includeing Database Enterprise Edition -- free from Oracle for self-study purposes.

sPS:
Learning how to look things up in the documentation is time well spent investing in your career. To that end, you should drop everything else you are doing and do the following:
Go to tahiti.oracle.com.
Drill down to your product and version.
<b><i><u>BOOKMARK THAT LOCATION</u></i></b>
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what is available here. Take special note of the "books" and "search" tabs. Under the "books" tab you will find the complete documentation library.
Spend a few minutes just getting familiar with what <b><i><u>kind</u></i></b> of documentation is available there by simply browsing the titles under the "Books" tab.
Open the Reference Manual and spend a few minutes looking through the table of contents to get familiar with what <b><i><u>kind</u></i></b> of information is available there.
Do the same with the SQL Reference Manual.
Do the same with the Utilities manual.
You don't have to read the above in depth. They are <b><i><u>reference</b></i></u> manuals. Just get familiar with <b><i><u>what</b></i></u> is there to <b><i><u>be</b></i></u> referenced. Ninety percent of the questions asked on this forum can be answered in less than 5 minutes by simply searching one of the above manuals.
Then set yourself a plan to dig deeper.
- Read a chapter a day from the Concepts Manual.
- Take a look in your alert log. One of the first things listed at startup is the initialization parms with non-default values. Read up on each one of them (listed in your alert log) in the Reference Manual.
- Take a look at your listener.ora, tnsnames.ora, and sqlnet.ora files. Go to the Network Administrators manual and read up on everything you see in those files.
- When you have finished reading the Concepts Manual, do it again.
Give a man a fish and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime.
PPS:
Why are you considering making this change? There will always be more jobs for developers than for DBAs. What is your motivation? Please don't tell me it's because of the money.

Performance issues kindly give your suggestions
hai
i have master table for vehicle table name is VEHICLE. this table is the main table, this is having records (80 lakhs)
Engine has two tables ( ENGINE(master) and ENGINE_SUB( Details for engine) ( less number of records 200 records only)
Like wise GEAR has two tables ( GEAR (master) and GEAR_SUB( details for gear) ( less number of records 200 records only)
For me the query will get framed in RUNTIME
IF User select ( ENGINE='ENG-001' and GEAR='GEAR-001') then the query get framed in "WHERE" part is as below
(ENGINE.COL1='ENG-001'
ENGINE.COL2=VEHICLE.COL1
ENGINE.COL1=ENGINE_SUB.COL1
ENGINE_SUB.COL2=VEHICLE.COL2)
AND
( GEAR.COL1='GEAR-001'
GEAR.COL2=VEHICLE.COL1
GEAR.COL1=GEAR_SUB.COL1
GEAR_SUB.COL2=VEHICLE.COL2)Upto here there is no problem at all
PERFORMANCE COMES ONLY WHEN IF USER SELECT ( ENGINE='ENG-001' OR GEAR='GEAR-001') then the query get framed in "WHERE" part is as below
(ENGINE.COL1='ENG-001'
ENGINE.COL2=VEHICLE.COL1
ENGINE.COL1=ENGINE_SUB.COL1
ENGINE_SUB.COL2=VEHICLE.COL2)
OR
( GEAR.COL1='GEAR-001'
GEAR.COL2=VEHICLE.COL1
GEAR.COL1=GEAR_SUB.COL1
GEAR_SUB.COL2=VEHICLE.COL2)this is taking much time to process. even 2 hours.
Index information
both the column of VEHICLE is indexed. VEHICLE has 80 lakhs record while other table has only 200 records. i dont have indexes in engine and gear tables.
So kindly help me
Waiting
S... /* next block should be left outer joined */
AND ENGINE.COL2=VEHICLE.COL1
AND ENGINE.COL1=ENGINE_SUB.COL1
AND ENGINE_SUB.COL2=VEHICLE.COL2
... /* next block should be left outer joined */
AND GEAR.COL2=VEHICLE.COL1
AND GEAR.COL1=GEAR_SUB.COL1
AND GEAR_SUB.COL2=VEHICLE.COL
... /* where condition from the user */
AND (ENGINE.COL1='ENG-001' or GEAR.COL1='GEAR-001')
Hai
the above query u framed will give wrong number of results. AND (ENGINE.COL1='ENG-001' or GEAR.COL1='GEAR-001')
Because
1) if ur giving OR condition like above then ENGINE_SUB.COL2 and GEAR_SUB.COL2 has direct join with VEHICLE. then the result will be wrong. both these columns joins with VEHICLE irrespective of each other.
then it should be like this AND GEAR_SUB.COL2=VEHICLE.COL or GEAR_SUB.COL2=VEHICLE.COL
Hope you get my point

Hi all,I am planning to buy apple air or pro laptop for my office use,kindly give ur suggestions,will it work structural design software like staad pro ETAB,cad in apple laptops?
Hi VigneshCivil,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Without knowing the specification requirements of the applications you will be using, I can't give you a specific recommendation. But I have provided you with the specifications of the two screen sizes of both the MacBook Pro Retina and the MacBook Air to compare with the requirements of your apps. One caution I would provide is not to go with the bare minimums required for the app, doing that would not give you optimum performance.
MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) - Technical Specifications
MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014) - Technical Specifications
MacBook Air (13-inch, Early 2014) - Technical Specifications

Oracle 10g Configuration for Student Edition
To Whom It May Concern,
I am currently enrolled in an Oracle 10g course at a local community college, and am using the "Guide to Oracle 10g" textbook by Morrison, Morrison & Conrad (ISBN: 0-619-21629-8). This book came with two CD's that contain a scaled-down student version of two Oracle 10g databases (Northwoods University & Clearwarter Traders).
I have attempted to install and configure the database software so that I can log on to the databases using SQL*Plus, but I am unable to do so. When attempting to log on, I get a "TNS:no listener" error (ORA-12541) or similar error. I have tried adding and configuring a listener, net service, etc. using the Oracle Net Configuration Assistant, but nothing works. The configuration tests always fail. I am sure that I am using the correct host name (I checked the TNSNames.ora file).
Can you please assist? Do you have documentation (or advice) on how to successfully configure this software?
Thank you,
GregThanks again for your reply, Phiri. I tried your suggestion, but still get the same errors. I tried searching the Oracle Home directory for a batch or executable file with the name "lsnrctl", but the search only returns two htm files. It looks like it can't execute the program simply because it does not exist.
NOTE: According to the .htm files, you are supposed to include the listener name after the command.
Ex: lsnrctl start My_Listener_01
I tried this, but it did not work either

Interview Question Asked by SANGHI....kindly give me suggestion
Dear friends,
I recently faced an Interview in some organization....and they have asked me a question for which I cud not able to answer them properly...Kindly give me some sugesstion/solution for the following question..so that I can answer it properly the nxt time..
Q. Suppose in our Organization if u are working as a DBA...and u are taking Physical Backup's (not logical) every week....and the organization is efforting a lot of amount on backup's for which the organization is spending a huge amount....??? as a DBA what can u suggest and how will u reduce the cost effect..
Hope every body understood the question...Kindly reply
Srinivas..A physical backup is any sort of backup of the physical database files, which basically means anything other than an export of the database. There are a substantial number of ways to take a physical backup-- hot and cold, using RMAN, using custom scripts, etc. so the situation described isn't particularly clear.
That said, my first question would be "What parts of your backup process are accounting for most of your cost?" If they are taking cold backups, perhaps the cost is related to the downtime-- there may be opportunity costs to not having systems available 24x7 and they may be buying more hardware to complete their batch processes in time once the database is back up. If they have custom-written scripts to do hot backups, perhaps those scripts aren't particularly robust, so the DBA's have to spend a lot of time hand-holding the process. In that case, moving to RMAN might save some time and effort. From their initial description, there isn't enough information to provide a useful answer-- they need to provide additional background/ explanation.

How is oracle 10g configured to use only one cpu
Today a customer informed me that their instance of 10g was configured to run on only one of four cpu's in a Solaris server.
How did they do this ?
GeorgeOn Solaris 10 this could be done in a number of ways.
One way is to create a processor set with only one CPU in it, and bind the Oracle processes to it. They cannot run on any other CPU any more. As long as you bind the listener to it, any network based connections will come from the listener and so be in the same processor set.
A more sophisticated way is to create a Zone with a 1 CPU resource in it. A Zone is a software container within Solaris 10, and it can be associated a processor set. The difference to the previous way is that no explicit binding of processes is necessary. A Zone looks like a Solaris system in its own right. And everything in that Zone can only run on the CPUs in the processor set bound to the Zone. So Oracle could be started up in the Zone in the normal way, and be restricted to only one physical CPU, always.
There is also the possibility of using Solaris Resource Manager, for a softer control of CPU. But this does not restrict processes to a single physical processor. It is a fair share scheduler that allows different processes to receive their configured slice of CPU time, on average. So processes can still run on different CPUs in the system, but the averaging means that no single workload can maximise the system and restrict access for other workloads.
And the latest Sun systems are capable of running a virtualisation layer when the system boots (sometimes called a HyperVisor), and this partitions the hardware up into virtual systems, before Solaris then loads and runs on top of these. So you can configure a 4 CPU system to look like 4 * 1 CPU systems through virtualisation, and each runs its own instance of Solaris. And then one of these you run Oracle.

I am starting the Oracle 10g Installation within orasm7 User which is a member of dba, users, disk groups.
The directories which are created upon starting the Oracle Installation in /tmp directory are having the situations as followed:

I have set DISPLAY variable in this way before starting Installation:
DISPLAY=$HOSTNAME:0.0
export DISPLAY
I tried to search the solution over the internet for this kind of problem, but i am not able to find its solution. Even i tried to start the Orale installation using this parameter: ./runInstaller ignoreSysPrereqs, but still it is giving the same unexpected error.
I have a doubt on File/Directory permissions which are created for Installation in /tmp. The umask setiing of the system is 0022.
Please, help me for this issue.
Thanks & Regards,

Exp File from Oracle 8i and Imp into Oracle 10G
Dear Friends
I have two servers one using oracle 8i and the other 10G. Firstly i have exported the file from oracle 8i using exp command. Im trying to import the file into 10G , Although this takes place successfully the character set conversion takes place please see the output below

I'm not able figure out why a conversion is taking place even though the same character set is used in 10G.
I would be greatful to you guys if can suggest a way to avoid this conversion as i fear data will be affected kindly need your suggestions for the same and thank you.
Regards
Parikshitbased on your nsl parameter settings, we can see that both databases use the same characterset. so, characterset conversion should not take place. the reason why you are facing these warnings is due to environment variables.
you should set NLS_LANG environment variables both before exporting and importing. Then warnings should disappear. For example, in your case you can set NLS_LANG=.WE8ISO8859P1 (please note that I have omitted language and territory parts here)
Try setting enviroment variables and then perform export and import again. -
Hello friends
Pls refere to my previous thread where we have discussed on sorting oprtion of Adding order by whereever group by is applicable
ORACLE 10G group by sorting Suggestion rqd
Read?
Then come to my point
if there is multiple columns for the group by then if we want to include order by clause, same number of columns has to be included in the order by also.
i dont think it is so
example'
SELECT SUM(QTY1),SUM(QTY2), PARTNO, PART_DESC
from part_sen
group by partno, part_desc
order by partno, part_desc
qty1 qty2 partno partdesc
70 101 I001 BRAKE SHOE
56 54 I002 HORN
30 30 I003 GEAR
15 5 I004 DOOR
5 5 I007 MOTOR GEAR
10 15 I008 ANCILLARY
10 15 I009 Window
so in order by clause we can include only the first column.. that is partno
SELECT SUM(QTY1),SUM(QTY2), PARTNO, PART_DESC
from part_sen
group by partno, part_desc
order by partno
Same result i get.
Pls give your suggestion
sALex,
SELECT SUM(QTY1),SUM(QTY2), PARTNO, PART_DESC
from part_sen
group by partno, part_desc
70 101 I001 BRAKE SHOE
56 54 I002 HORN
30 30 I003 GEAR
15 5 I004 DOOR
5 5 I007 MOTOR GEAR
10 15 I008 ZLLADER
10 15 I008 OCTLADER
10 15 I008 ANCILLARY
10 15 I008 BALLLADER
10 15 I009 Window
SELECT SUM(QTY1),SUM(QTY2), PARTNO, PART_DESC
from part_sen
group by partno, part_desc
order by partno
70 101 I001 BRAKE SHOE
56 54 I002 HORN
30 30 I003 GEAR
15 5 I004 DOOR
5 5 I007 MOTOR GEAR
10 15 I008 ANCILLARY
10 15 I008 BALLLADER
10 15 I008 OCTLADER
10 15 I008 ZLLADER
without ordering the second column part_desc it is properly ordered how?
so adding order by partno is same as order by partno,part_desc
Pls reply

Is Windows 7 Ultimate compatible with Oracle 10g?
I am trying to install Oracle 10g for Windows on my Windows 7 OS. However, it is failing at the TNS listener configuration section. It is giving me error:
"Enterprise Manager configuration failed due to the following error:
'job_queue_processes must be greater than or equal to 1. Fix the error(s) and run EM configuration assistant again in standalone mode. You can retry configuring this Database with Enterprise Manager later by manually running C:/oracle/product/10.1.0/Db_4/bin/emca script"
Can anyone tell me what went wrong?? I am doubting if my Windows 7 is even compatible to Oracle 10g.Hi;
What is Your DB version to try to install... You need to 10.2.0.5 level for 10g on Win7. Please see:

How to check/find the size of current ROLLBACK segment in oracle 10g
How to check/find the size of current ROLLBACK segment in oracle 10g ? Kindly help
A rollback segment name like "_SYSSMU231$" is used when you have Automatic Undo Management enabled.
The only relevant parameters are :
1. UNDO_MANAGEMENT=AUTO
2. UNDO_RETENTION=n minutes ==> this is what everyone should be interested in
3. The sizes of the Undo Tablespace datafiles and whether AUTOEXTEND is ON or OFF
No one should be interested in the size of a single undo segment when Automatic Undo Management is enabled.
Possible causes of ORA-01555 errors in Automatic Undo Management
a. UNDO_RETENTION is too low
b. Undo tablespace is too small

No HTTPServer in oracle 10g?
When I install oracle 9i, there is an OracleOraHome92HTTPServer in the Services. When it is started, I can use http://machineName:7779/ to listen it.
With oracle 10g, there is no such HTTPServer, I just wondering how it works in oracle 10g. Please share your comments. Thanks.The HTTP server in 9i was used by some Oracle applications, like Enterprise Manager and iSQL*Plus. These applications now use OC4J, so no HTTP Server is installed. It is on the companion CD as said earlier though.
