Oracle 10g RAC design with ASM and OCFS

Hi all,
I have a question about a proposed Oracle 10g Release 2 RAC design for a 2 node cluster.
ASM can store database files but not Oracle binaries nor OCR and voting disk. As such, OCFS version 1 does not support a shared Oracle Home. We plan to use OCFS version 2 with ASM version 2 on Red Hat Linux Enteprrise Server 4 with Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.1).
For OCFS v2, a shared Oracle home and shared OCR and voting disk are supported. My question is does the following proposed architecture make sense for OCFS v2 with ASM v2 on Red Hat Linux 4?
Oracle 10g Release 2 on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 4:
OCFS V2:
- shared Oracle home and binaries
- shared OCR and vdisk files
- CRS software shared OCFS v2 filesystem
- spfile
- controlfiles
- tnsnames.ora
ASM v2 with ASMLib v2:
Proposed ASM disk groups:
- data_dg for application data
- backupdg for flashback and archivelogs
- undo_rac1dg ASM diskgroup for undo tablespace for racnode1
- undo_rac2dg ASM diskgroup for undo tablespace for racnode2
- redo_rac1dg ASM diskgroup to hold redo logs for racnode1
- redo_rac2dg ASM diskgroup to hold redo logs for racnode2
- temp1dg temp tablespace for racnode1
- temp2dg temp tablespace for racnode2
Does this sound like a good initial design?
Ben Prusinski, Senior DBA

OK Tim, thanks for advices.
I think Netbackup can be integrated with RMAN but I don't want to loose time on this (political).
To summarize:
ORACLE_HOME and CRS_HOME on each node (RAID1 and NTFS)
Shared storage:
Disk1 and disk 2: RAID1: - Raw partition 1 for OCR
- Raw partition 2 for VotingDisk
- OCFS for FLASH_RECOVERY_AREA
Disk3, disk4 and disk5: RAID 0 - Raw with ASM redundancy normal 1 diskgroup for database files.
This is a running project here, will start testing the design on VMware and then go for production setup.

  • Oracle 10g R2 installation with ASM+RAC

    Gurus,
Need some suggestuon on Oracle 10g R2 installation with ASM and RAC option.
We have found many documents on the Oracle, HP, HP-Oracle CTC and third party web sites, but nothing that is specific to this particular combination of separate
ORACLE_HOMEs, ASM and 10g RAC CRS. It is unclear for me from the documentation how this combination of ASM and 10.2g RAC may best be installed.
The high level steps i got after reading lot of docs as follows - but i am not sure whether these are correct or not. if they are correct, can any one share their experience/notes please?
    1) Install CRS
    2) Install RDBMS for ASM HOME - create separater oracle home for ASM instance using OUI
    3) Install RDBMS for RAC Database Home - create separater oracle home for RAC database using OUI
    4) Create ASM database using DBCA -
    5) Use dbca to create database.

Oracle provides 'paint by numbers' tutorials called 'Oracle By Example'. (Go to OTN, check under the Training tab)
They have one for a Windows based ASM/RAC that you might want to review. Not your specific environment, but the steps will be dag-nabbed close.
    I recommend walking the path (http://otn.oracle.com >> training:OBE >> Database 10g Release 1:VMWare:Installation

  • Oracle 10g RAC/Grid rename hostname and re-ip server?

Here is the situation. We are installing Oracle 10g in a RAC/Grid configuration. Servers were installed and configured with static IP's and unique hostname's according to instructions. The problem is the servers are being shipped to another location and the on-site administrators will have to rename the hostname's and give all the servers new IP addresses.
    The question:
Is it possible to rename the hostname's and re-ip all the servers without having to reinstall all the Oracle servers in the RAC/Grid? Does anybody have any information on what will need to successfully accomplish this?
    Regards,
    Ed Bragg

    Hi Ed!
I never tried this but I believe that after changing the IP addresses and reconfiguring the virtual IP's it should work. What you have to do is to reconfigure the ssh stuff with the keys, etc.

  • Oracle 11gR2 RAC setup with ASM option running on two nodes . Seeking help

    Hi ,
Recently we have migrated to 11gR2 extended RAC for one of our application using ASM . Its a two node RAC setup . We are using ASM Normal redundancy feature maintaining two failure group .
I need few clarification regarding our new DR set up .
We are planning to have EMC SRDF replication from any of node storage ( Either 1 or 2) to the DR disks .
Its stright to use when we use the normal file systems . In case of ASM , I am not sure how this replication will work ? and on which level the replication should happen ?
Do i need an ASM instance up and running on DR server , Which will recognize the disks as it is once DR disks are separated from prod replication and assigned to the server ?
What should be prerequisite on DR server before we can start the srdf replication (EMC) and make it work .
Thanks for All your Valuble suggestion .

Before you decide to use EMC replication give considerable thought to the fact that you are introducing a single point of failure.
Hardware snapshot replication is very fast. That is all it is. If you database crashes because of corruption on disk ... your replica will be equally corrupt.
What is fast can not do what DataGuard does ... verify quality. If the point is DR. Go with DataGuard unless EMC is willing to, in writing (not verbally) give you a guarantee (in hard cash) to cover all costs if they replicate bad blocks and it causes an outage.
And just so no one thinks I'm picking o EMC ... the same weakness exists with all of the other storage vendor's products.

  • Oracle 10g RAC - Private Interconnect on Private non-routable VLAN

In our data center there is an existing Oracle 10g RAC configured with private VLAN for Interconnect administered by a different group of DBAs.
We are designing a new, separate Oracle 10g RAC environment to support our application.
When we discussed with our data center folks to set up a private VLAN for our RAC Interconnect, they suggest to use the same existing Private VLAN used by other Oracle RAC configurations. In that case the Interconnect IPs will be on the same subnet as other Oracle RAC configurations.
    For example, if
RAC1 with 2 nodes is using 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 in the VLAN_1 for the Interconect, they want us to use the same VLAN_1 with Interconnect IPs 192.168.1.3 and 192.168.1.4 for our 2 node RAC.
Is Sharing same subnet on the same Private VLANs for interconnects of different RAC configurations supported?
Will that cause any performance hit? That means the Interconnect IPs of One RAC configuration is pingable from other RAC configuration.
Did anyone come across such a design?
Could not find any info on this on Metalink.
    Thanks

    yes
this is practically very much feasible.. as you would have only 4 m/c in ip subnet .... and this is very much less than the public subnet which we should refrain from using from interconnect.

  • Solaris 10 and Hitachi LUN mapping with Oracle 10g RAC and ASM?

    Hi all,
I am working on an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM installation with Sun E6900 servers attached to a Hitachi SAN for shared storage with Sun Solaris 10 as the server OS. We are using Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) RAC clusterware
for the clustering software and raw devices for shared storage and Veritas VxFs 4.1 filesystem.
    My question is this:
How do I map the raw devices and LUNs on the Hitachi SAN to Solaris 10 OS and Oracle 10g RAC ASM?
I am aware that with an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM instance, one needs to configure the ASM instance initialization parameter file to set the asm_diskstring setting to recognize the LUNs that are presented to the host.
I know that Sun Solaris 10 uses /dev/rdsk/CwTxDySz naming convention at the OS level for disks. However, how would I map this to Oracle 10g ASM settings?
I cannot find this critical piece of information ANYWHERE!!!!
    Thanks for your help!

You don't seem to state categorically that you are using Solaris Cluster, so I'll assume it since this is mainly a forum about Solaris Cluster (and IMHO, Solaris Cluster with Clusterware is better than Clusterware on its own).
Clusterware has to see the same device names from all cluster nodes. This is why Solaris Cluster (SC) is a positive benefit over Clusterware because SC provides an automatically managed, consistent name space. Clusterware on its own forces you to manage either the symbolic links (or worse mknods) to create a consistent namespace!
So, given the SC consistent namespace you simple add the raw devices into the ASM configuration, i.e. /dev/did/rdsk/dXsY. If you are using Solaris Volume Manager, you would use /dev/md/<setname>/rdsk/dXXX and if you were using CVM/VxVM you would use /dev/vx/rdsk/<dg_name>/<dev_name>.
Of course, if you genuinely are using Clusterware on its own, then you have somewhat of a management issue! ... time to think about installing SC?

  • 10g Grid (RAC) on Linux with ASM and OCR?

I was trying to install 10g on Linux with ASM. The docs are not terribly clear on this, but I'd like to have the Oracle Cluster Registry (OCR) on one of my four ASM disks, rather than dedicate space to OCFS. I have 4 18.2 GB drives setup with ASM now. Is there a way to do this?
I guess the other thing I could do is to cut the ASM disks into two partitions. One, say 200MB and the other the rest. I'd put OCFS for OCR on the 200MB partition on one of the disks. The large partition on each of the rest of the disks would be dedicated to ASM.
What am I missing? I feel it must be something obvious. I'd rather have the OCR on the ASM, so that I don't have to deal with it...
    Thanks!
    Jeff

    Hi.
There shouldn't be a problem with this provided you use a 32-bit OS on the 64 bit machine. RAC doesn't care about the chipset, so long as the same OS is used, but I don't thinkit will support one node on 32 bit and one on 64 bit, since they are actually separate distributions.
Of course, I've never tried it so I can't be sure :)
    Cheers
    Tim...

  • Does managing Oracle 10g RAC with ASM require full root access?

We currently have three entirely separate support areas, Unix, Storage and DBA. We're now considering using Oracle 10g RAC with ASM and as part of the assessment trying to work out if we can still draw similar support boundaries. I know that installing RAC and configuring ASM requires root access but will DBA continue to need root access to manage & support RAC? If so, does anyone know if the commands they need can be RBAC'd or if we just need to share root access going forwards. I've had a look at a number of docs including http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/rac.102/b14197/toc.htm. which is fairly informative but none of them seem to mention the requirement for root access on Solaris. I'm guessing they just assume that it's available, but that's not generally the case in our environment.
    All advice / info welcome!

I would have thought that the only reason you would need root access once RAC and ASM had been set up would be to add more disks to the ASM configuration. This would be needed to change the ownership on the raw LUNs or to make additions to metasets (SVM/Oban) or diskgroups (VxVM/CVM). Beyond that, I can't imagine needing root access.
I'm sure others will chime in if they can think of other reasons!
    Regards,
    Tim

  • Using Clob with TopLink 9.0.4.5 and Oracle 10g RAC

I am trying to store an XML file in a Clob type field of a DB table using TopLink 9.0.4.5 and Oracle 10g RAC and need some guidance about how to do it. I got some directions to start it with the Tip "How-To: Map Large Objects (LOBs) to Oracle Databases with OracleAS TopLink" but still need some more helps.
When using the Oracle JDBC OCI driver, the tip gives the code block for a Clob field:
    DirectToField scriptMapping = new DirectToField();
    scriptMapping.setAttributeName("script");
    scriptMapping.setFieldName("IMAGE.SCRIPT");
    descriptor.addMapping(scriptMapping);
As I understand, TopLink creates instances of the Descriptor class at run time for each of the descriptor files and stores them in a database session, where is the proper place (in SessionEvent of TopLinkSessionEventHandler?) for me to get a reference to such an instance of my Descriptor class in Java code so that I can add the above mentioned additional Mapping? Are the above String values of "script" and "IMAGE.SCRIPT" predefined in TopLink API? Can I accomplish the same thing just using the TopLink Workbench tool instead? If yes, please advise the detailed steps to do so.
The tip also states to call the following code in case of using Clob:
    DatabaseLogin login = session.getLogin();
    login.useStringBinding();
Should the above 2 lines of code be called after the following lines of code?
    SessionManager sessionManager = SessionManager.getManager();
    Server serverSession = (Server)sessionManager.getSession("MY_SESSION_NAME");
Besides the above extra coding for the Session and Descriptor Mapping, is there any special handling in between Data model and DB table mapping? Can I map a Java String type to a DB Clob field using the Direct-to-field mapping?
    Appreciate any help.

Never mind ....... I had already figured it out .....

  • Oracle 10g RAC using ASM - Storage Issue

I’ve an issue related to Oracle 10g RAC.

I’ve faced an issue recently related to EMC storage.
The /orasoft partition displays 1.4 Gb space available using df command.
With both nodes sharing the common Oracle Home (/orasoft/db_1), when ever I try to touch a file I get an error as No Space left on device. I’m unable to start any service with the same reason.
    Is this setup correct ??
Can anyone help me with this storage issue ??

Need a clarification here...what do you mean by "Storage System"...do you mean a server/node or the SAN storage system. If you are referring to a server/node's local storage, then it would NOT be possible for use by RAC, since the disk space has to be shared among the nodes.
Here is what you can do:
    - Create two partitions/devices (for example Disk_1 and Disk_2) in the SAN storage
    - Create a ASM disk group which would mirror Disk_1 to Disk_2.
Again, please note that the partitions have to be visible and be accessible read/write from both the nodes/servers.

    Hi,
If you create a new diskgroup you may be to add the same diskgroup to parameter file or spfile and which will be needing down time.
sugestion: Instead of creating new diskgroup you should to add disk to existing group.if you add asm disk to existing group your all problem will be solved and Oracle itself will be managing all.And than i am sure no need to add entry in the parameter or spfile like +db_create_file_dest=.....

  • Problem with Oracle 10g RAC VIP network setting at Solaris 9

    Dear All,
I have tried to set up a Oracle 10g RAC Release 2.

The nodes setting as the following:
    nodes 1:
    Public address: 172.16.0.121
Private address: 192.168.0.121, 192.168.1.121 (dual path for heart beat)

    Public address: 172.16.0.122
    Private address: 192.168.0.122, 192.168.1.122
And i have assigned two IP adress 172.16.0.131, 172.16.0.132 as the VIP address for the
    RAC.
And the following is the /etc/hosts file:
    root@shk01 # cat /etc/hosts

I did try to add the VIP address on bge0:1, as i using bge0 for the public address.
Both nodes i did using the same interface name for it.
Anyone have idea for me to check out the error?
Also, I have other question about the raw device.
As there is option for setting for ASM or raw device. If choosing raw device, does it mean that it just need to
format the storage disk but without newfs it? And then the Oracle program will able to handle it?

  • RAC with ASM and without ASM

    Hi all,
we planing to install RAC 11g instance active/active . and we are using SAN storage RAID 10.
I know ASM is nice feature . but it need more maintenance in future . This is what I see
it from Manual and training . for patching ..... because it maintain as instance.
why I do need ASM since I have SAN and I can control mirroring ...etc
I need sold answer here ?? why I need to use this feature that already can be covered using another facility like SAN.
    Best Regards,

What I have found in a RAC world is there is maintenance no matter which way you go, A cluster file system will require upgrades, patches, etc. RAW volumes will require extra effort in allocation, etc. as well as increase the number of files in the database. ASM requires additional instance on each node to maintain which is quite simple and rolling patches in ASM is becoming reality slowly. I have found that removing the management of RAW volumes is more trouble then the maintenance of the ASM instances and the added benefits of ASM outweigh the maintenance for sure. I found that the cluster file system mainteance is pretty well a wash.
As for ASM being widely used, the most recent RAC clusters (last 3) I have built have all been ASM....... 1 on HPUX and 2 on Linux (Red Hat and Oracle Enterprise Linux) and future clusters coming up that I know of are all going to be ASM as well. While it may be true that a lot of existing RAC environments have not yet gone to ASM almost all new RAC environments are. It is certainly taking hold. If you look at the effort on a large database to move to ASM from RAW volumes or cluster file system it can appear to be a lot of work and that is true, but in the long run my experience with ASM has been positive therefore I would not hesitate to recommend new RAC clusters be built with ASM and existing clusters should have a migration plan in place. As with some cluster file systems like veritas, GPFS, etc. There is addtional cost involved where ASM does not have the additional cost so moving existing clusters can save $$........ RAM volumne management may not fall on the DBA but someone has to manage all those volumnes at a SAN level and that is additional management just may not really be with the DBA.
Just my additional 2 cents worth.
    Hope this helps.

  • Need to change IP address and host name on a ORACLE 10g RAC setup.

    Hi Forum,
I have a task to change the IP address, host name and host related details for the ORACLE 10g RAC 2 node setup. So Can anyone tell me the procedure to do the same on both the nodes.

    change VIP name

If you'd like to change HOSTNAME... Metalink (NOTE:220970.1)
Can I change the public hostname in my Oracle Database 10g Cluster using Oracle Clusterware?
Hostname changes are not supported in Oracle Clusterware (CRS), unless you want to perform a deletenode followed by a new addnode operation.
The hostname is used to store among other things the flag files and Oracle Clusterware stack will not start if hostname is changed.
    Changing the Private Interconnect
o Change of the IP Address: change the IP address in the hosts file and/or DNS and make sure that ASM and the database also use the same interconnect
o Change of the private node name used by Oracle Clusterware: requires a reinstall of Oracle Clusterware
So, Public or Private hostnames can only be changed by removing/adding nodes, or reinstalling Oracle Clusterware. VIP Hostnames can be changed
But you can read this idea (reinstall CRS)
