Oracle database options
Hi,
I'm installing a new Oracle database Home and need some help.
As far as I understand some of the options are not licensed when buying Oracle Enterprise edt. Should I do custom install to disable some options "Oracle Spatial, Oracle OLAP, Oracle Advanced Security" to avoid getting in trouble with Oracle regarding licenses?
Regards
933746
Thanks!
I was thinking of installing a typical Enterprise Edt. This installation procedure will be used for production install later on so I need to do it correct now to get the procedure as correct as possible. I'm guessing that Spatial, Advanced security and so on a seperate licenses than the Oracle Enterprise edt software licenses?
Cheers

With regard to this thread: Few interesting facts about database under UCM 10g what Oracle database options can be effectively used under UCM? The comprehensive overview of the options can be obtained here: http://www.oracle.com/us/products/database/options/index.html
Real Application Clusters* - this option can be used to increase the database performance and availability. It is fully transparent to applications.
Partitioning* - this option can affect performance, enable hierarchical storage management (using cheaper hardware to store large amount of data) and help with disaster recovery (backup/restore). I believe, if documents are stored in the database, this option is a must. Even if a project does not use HSM, partitioning of large tables such as FILESTORAGE will enable: a) faster backups - once a partition is "closed", it will not change - therefore, future backups can work only with "open" partitions and unpartitioned data; b) faster restores - large tables can only be partially restored - e.g. few "last months" and the system can be running whilst restoring the remaining data. Watch out for partitioning of metadata tables, though (DOCMETA, REVISIONS, DOCUMENTS)! At least, there are no clear criteria how these tables should be partitioned - and various checks and validations may actually require to have those tables restored fully before you may perform such basic operations like check-in.
Advance Security* and Database Vault* - these options may increase security, when content is stored in the database (no one, not even administrators might be able to reach the content unless authorized). The only drawback to that is that even if content is stored in the database, in initial phases it is anyway stored in the filesystem (vault), too, and the minimum retention period is 1 day
I will also mention two options that might look appetizing, but UCM probably does not benefit from them too much:
Advanced Compression* - compresses data in the database. This, and Hybric Columnar Compression used in Exadata, can do the real magic when working with structured data (just read a report from Turkcell, who compressed 600 TB to 50 TB, which means by 12). For unstructured data, such as PDF or JPEG, the effect might be very small, though. Still, if you have a chance, give it a try.
Active Data Guard* - Data Guard is a technology for disaster recovery. Advantage of Active Data Guard is that it allows using of the secondary location for read only operations, rather than leaving it idle (stand-by); this means, you might decrease sizing of both locations. With UCM, also do not forget about CONTENT TRACKER (which might require a "write" operation even for otherwise read only ones, such as DOC_INFO, GET_SEARCH_RESULTS, or retrieving a content item), but db gurus know how to handle even that. Unfortunately, Active Data Guard cannot be used with UCM at the moment, because not all the data is stored in the database and the secondary location might not be fully synchronized.
In my opinion, other options are not so relevant for a UCM solution.Compression and Deduplication of SecureFiles LOBs, which is part of the Advanced Compression Option, can potentially deliver huge space savings, and performance benefits. If the content is primarily Office documents, or XML documents, or character-based (email?), then it will likely compress very well. Also, if the same file is stored multiple times, deduplication will cause the Oracle database to store only one copy, rather than storing the same document multiple times. There's more info on Advanced Compression here: http://www.oracle.com/us/products/database/options/advanced-compression/index.html

How to uninstall Oracle 11g Database Options?
I've come across a problem. A company that developed an application, installed Oracle 11g EE.
I guess they would use all default options. Some of them are licensed separately, and are not used. So I need to uninstall them.
For example, I see that it is installed "Advanced Compression". I tried to uninstall it from the Universal Installer, but there isn't an option.Good news for my company.
There has never been used "Advanced Compression" and for everything else we are licensed.

We have Oracle 10.2. I used dba_registry to get database options. How to find these options' dependencies?
dba_dependencies has dependencies for all packages, funtions, procedures and triggers. But options are Oracle components.
My purpose is that we don't need some options and need to get rid of them. Before I do it, I need to see options' dependencies.
Please advise.
Thanks
S.

Most likely this person or persons has no idea the danger and consequences of what they are asking.
The security of an Oracle database is not enhanced by removing anything that shows up in DBA_REGISTRY.
Here's the list:

Oracle Spatial Database option
hello all,
I downloaded Oracle 9i Personal Edition for Windows 98 platform.
It is a free download @ technet.oracle.com.I have successfully installed the database.
Now i was looking for an "Oracle Spatial" option in the database.
Can anybody tell me how can i store geospatial data in the Oracle database ?
or how can i set the option "Oracle Spatial" in the database ?
I m looking forward for ur help.
Bikram.Try connecting as SCOTT/TIGER, then do this:
select * from user_sdo_geom_metadata;
if the table does not exist, then spatial hasn't been installed
if it does exist, then spatial (or locator) has been installed.
If the table didn't exist, rerun the installer, choose a custom
installation, and check the Spatial box, then install.
If the table did exist, or after you install spatial, you'll want to
use the user's guide, or take the spatial course to get started. -
Web Server Options for APEX Installation on Oracle Database 10g
Hi. We are installation a APEX on a test server that is running Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.4.0. As I understand it there are two Web Server Options:
1) Oracle HTTP Server (Apache)
2) Oracle Application Express Listener
Do both of these work for Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.4.0? I thought I remember reading somewhere that only the Oracle Application Express Listener would only work with database version 11 or higher.Do both of these work for Oracle Database 10g 10.2.0.4.0?Yes.
I thought I remember reading somewhere that only the Oracle Application Express Listener would only work with database version 11 or higher. No, that restriction (with the exception of 10g XE) applies to the third web server option which you haven't mentioned: Embedded PL/SQL Gateway (EPG), as discussed in your previous thread: +{thread:id=2201975}+

Create OEM report - Databases using Oracle Partitioning option
Hi
Is it possible to draw a report on Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g to discover which of its list of target databases are using the oracle partitioning option. It is for license purposes. Oracle partitioning is installed by default, but it is not always used.
Thanks and RegardsYes that is possible if you create a report using a query like
SELECT
HOST, DATABASE_NAME, INSTANCE_NAME,
TARGET_TYPE,NAME,
CURRENTLY_USED, DETECTED_USAGES, FIRST_USAGE_DATE,
LAST_USAGE_DATE, VERSION, LAST_SAMPLE_DATE,
DESCRIPTION
FROM SYSMAN.MGMT$DB_FEATUREUSAGE
WHERE
NAME = 'Partitioning (user)'
AND
CURRENTLY_USED = 'TRUE'

Oracle Enterprise Edition Database Option Licensing
Does anyone know if there is an official Oracle document regarding licensing of Oracle Enterprise Edition Licensing options?
If you for example install Oracle Enterprise Edition, do a standard install, a number of Enterprise options get installed, for example Partitioning and OLAP.
Both of those options are license extras.
So if they are installed but not used, should they still be licensed?
Does anyone know the official line on this?
Regards
Steven MillerWelcome to the forums !
AFAIK, as long as these extra options are not used, you should be ok - but the best/correct answer will be given by your Oracle salesperson. Answers offered in these forums will not stand up in a court of law :-)

If you do not plan to use these options, it is best to turn them off or disable them.

What's the best option for event generation from an Oracle database?
Hi all,
I need to interface from an oracle database into WLI (or elink if need be). The
code that needs to call this interface is written in pl/sql in the database.
What is the best way to enable the pl/sql to make a call to WLI?
I know you can set up an event trigger on a table using the sample DBMS adapter
so that it will send info to WLI via the events table in the database but this
is what they call a pull event(i.e. the adapter is actually polling this table
for whenever an event gets put into it I think).
Has anyone ever done a push type event? (e.g. calling java code from pl/sql that
sends event to WLI)
Or anyone know whether the new JCA for Oracle Applications will help with this?
I am using Oracle 8.1.7 so don't have any extras with Oracle Apps.
thanks all
adamAdam,
I have not implemented an push event adapter with Oracle. However, I
know the trend that seems to be happening in the industry and I can say
I agree 100% with it's implementation. I am seeing vendors using
Oracle's Advanced queuing features to push events out to other
applications. One interface for AQ is PL/SQL using DBMS_AQ, DBMS_AQADM,
and DBMS_AQELM packages, so you would not have to rewrite your current
business logic. Although I have not done the leg work, logically, this
would be the approach I would take if tasked to implement an Oracle
event adapter.
For more information register (free) for an account on Oracle Technology
Network (OTN), then go to the following URL:
http://otn.oracle.com/docs/products/oracle9i/doc_library/release2/appdev.920/a96587/toc.htm
Note: (the url goes to Oracle9i, as I couldn't find the link to 8i, but
8i AQ in will work just as well)
Cheers,
Chris

Your import database use a multibyte characterset, your export db a singlebyte cs.
This means, a char can need more than 1 byte.
Try this before import (and before create tables!!):
alter system set nls_length_semantics=char;Greetings

Initially i have used SQL Developer to transfer some data into excell sheets, now i want to transfer those file's data into another Oracle Database.
What other options do i have?
Is excel not the right tool to transfer CLOB datatypes?well,
I couldn't suggest an excel to do it...
You can go from Oracle to Oracle with the PL/SQL IKM. It works fine.
Does it help you? -
Oracle database 11g release 2 installation problem on windows 7 (64-bit)
First of all my windows is not genuine, but on my friend's desktop oracle download and installation worked fine, he chose "create and configure database" options, and it works very well on his desktop, though his windows is also illegitimate. In my case, when I select "Create and configure database" option and pressed 'next",
(Go to my blog to see it with snapshots: Computer Science: Oracle database 11g release 2 installation problem on windows 7 (64-bit))
it asks to select class, I select "Desktop class" and pressed "next". The moment I pressed "next", the whole setup thing disappeared like it was never started. I searched for all possible reasons for why its not getting installed on my laptop, I used registry cleaner s/w, deleted 25 GB of data to create free space if it were the problem, increased the virtual memory to increase the space for RAM, I did almost everything to get this setup working, but I found no success with the "Create and Configure database" option
and
then
I chose a "database software only" option and chose to store in a folder w/o spaces. This way, I got database s/w only and then later I found "Database configuration Assistant (DBCA)" from windows START button and clicked to create and configure database manually. The steps are pretty much interactive and doesn't involve much brainstorming.
The values I filled for
1) Global Database Name : orcl
2) System Identifier : orcl
3) I chose common password for both SYS and SYSTEM
4) while on Enterprise Manager Configuration step, It asked me to create and configure listener in oracle home, so for that too, I typed "netca" in windows START menu and clicked it. There I added a listener.
5) I chose a Storage area which was the Oracle-home itself i.e. where our installation files goes , in my case it is : C:\oracle_base\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\oradata
6) Then after few more nitty-gritty clicks, we are set to go !
Finally to write SQL code and to create your first TABLE , type "sqlplus" in windows "START" menu and click it when it appears. A command-prompt like window appears , which will ask you for username and password, so here they are :
Username : sys/ as sysdba
Password : (its the one you created in step 3 stated above )
After this you are ready to write your first SQL command. Is this your solution to your original post at Oracle database 11g release 2 installation on windows 7 (64-bit) ?
Pl be aware that you should not create any custom objects in SYS or SYSTEM schema - you should create any such objects in a separate custom schema.

I don't know what problem is.
I was planning to install Oracle Application Express into my server.
So, i made a fresh database installation with Oracle Database Enterprise Edition 9i release 2 (9.2.0.1) and setting up Oracle Application Express 3.2.0.00.27 to use it with it.
The installation was succesful.
But I am having problems to create workspaces using the Admin option: Manage Worspaces --> Create Worspace.
After open these option, the page ask me to enter Workspace Name and Workspace Description. Then appears the page where I need to enter re-use existing schema, schema name, schema password and space quota. When I press the next button, the CPU increase to 100% use and the server, even when it does not freeze, stays in the last page and not move to the next want for a long long time.... more thant 3 hours.
I read at the apache logs and didn't find something to show me the possible causes of these behaiviour.
Apache logs
access_log.txt -------> "POST /pls/apex/wwv_flow.accept HTTP/1.1" 302 163
ssl_engine_log -------> Failed to release global mutex lock
Init: (localhost:4443) RSA server certificate CommonName (CN) 'NOT SECURE!!!! does NOT match server name!?

I am really confuse because I thougth that Oracle application Express is certified with Oracle Database EE 9.2.0.1
My server spec are:
Windows XP with SP2
500Mb Ram Memory
7.2 Gb Free Disk Space
Please any idea about which can be the possible problem/solution for that.

PanamaWell I think it is kind of wasted of time to try to figure it out which caould be the possible cause, once you told me that Apex works with 9.2.0.3 or higher and has an issues with earlier versions.
I already download the last release for 10g, so I hope it solve the problem and let me install and setup properly oracle application server.
I know it is kind of hard work to do to install 10g rel 2 but, well, is the only solution, it seems.
thanks for everything.
