Oracle VDI 3.2 support come vSphere 4.1?

Hello all,
have any one the information to me? When come the Support for vSphere 4.1? I have a Costumer he will upgrade VDI 3.1 to 3.2 and vsphere 4.0 to vsphere 4.1
Thanks
kai

Hey Kai
So from what you learned, vsphere 4.1 is not supported yet? Is something not working if you try to use vsphere 4.1?
thanks!

  • Solaris 10 Oracle VDI VirtualBox 3.2 USB support

    Dear folks,
This my first time to the forum, since we are in the progress of deploying 240+ thin clients using Oracle VDI. I was piloting the project in a desktop machines with Sunray 3i. I installed Solaris 10 9/10 and Oracle VDI 3.2.1. However, while I was creating WinXP VM in Virtualbox 3.2 -the one which came with Oracle VDI 3.2- I got that error about being unable to connect to USB proxy server. Eventually this error leads to that all my VMs doesn't support USB redirection. So USB flash disk drive doesn't work in my Sunray 3i. Reading VirtualBox documentation Installing on Solaris hosts , I came across this info "*This does not apply to Solaris 10 hosts due to lack of USB support.*" Is this real?
Does this mean I can't redirect USB hardware to my VMs in the server via Sunray 3i? If this is true, what is the workaround for this problem?
    Please advise me. . .

Other than the documentation stating it doesn't work, in practice have you tested it to not work also?
We have two Solaris 10u5 machines running Vbox 3.2.12 and they pass through USB fine with our Sun Ray 3's (not 3i's but that shouldn't matter).
Did you enable USB passthrough in the VDI core by selecting the desktop pool and going to the Settings -> Sun Ray RDP Settings? Theres checkboxes to enable USB/smartcard pass through.

  • Anyone know when will Oracle VDI support Oracle VM Server x86?

    Hi there.
Is there a roadmap or plan for Oracle VDI support Oracle VM server x86?
I think we need enterprise class(type-1) hypervisor.
    DH,

I dont think its in the roadmap because Oracle VM does not lend itself nicely to all the technology deeply embedded in Oracle VDI, namely, VRDP which is a proprietary remote desktop protocol Oracle VDI leverages to paint screens directly from a VirtualBox remote display session. The only thin Oracle VM (Xen) has close to this is the dated VNC protocol.
We went down this road early on, expecting Oracle VDI to integrate, but the more we learn about how Oracle VDI does things, the more it doesn't make sense to adapt Oracle VM Server to do this.
I don't know Oracles plans surrounding this (who does?) but it would seem it would take ALOT of work and redesign to make that happen, whereas they already acquired Oracle VDI (and VirtualBox) from their SUN acquisition.

  • How to configure Solaris 10 IPMP for Oracle VDI 3.3.2

    Hi,
Does anyone have an indication on how to configure Solaris 10 IPMP in a manner that supports Oracle VDI?
We have setup two servers with 2 test addresses on physical and 1 logical for the hostname of the box, but when we configure VDI the VDI database does not come up on the 2nd box. We have also tried configuring IPMP without test addresses, but it doesn't make any difference - the DB still doesn't go into the up state after configuration on the 2nd server.
    Solaris 10 u9 with patches
Two physical NICs on management VLAN via 2 switches
Two physical NIcs on VDI VLAN via 2 switches
    VDI 3.3.2
All hostnames are in DNS and resolve for short name, FQDN and also reverse IP lookup
The is a proposal pdf on Oracle website that mentions IPMP, so someone has done it. Just could do with a hint on how it was done so that it works.
    Thanks
    Paul

OK, updating this with what was causing the issue.
Not an IPMP problem this was a DNS problem. The VDI servers have access to two DNS environments, so had a DNS search path that had the domain where the VMs where going to go and another for management of the box with two DNS servers listed in /etc/resolv.conf.
We configured VDI using the FQDN for the management DNS, however the vda-config script takes the hostname of the box adds the first DNS domain from /etc/resolv.conf search entry and configures using (it seams to ignore what you put into the vda-config). When the config script comes to configuring MySQL because the names didn't match (FQDN it created by adding hostname to the 1st entry in DNS search path & FQDN that you put into vda-config command), it decides that it is configuring a "Client MySQL" instance rather than a "Slave MySQL" instance, which means the VDA DB never comes up in the out of vda-center status.
    So the fix is to:
    1) configure IPMP without test addresses (so traffic comes out of the correct IP and can be reverse looked up in DNS by the other host)
    2) if you have multiple DNS search entries, configure VDI using the first entry in your search path as its FQDN

  • Uttsc 'Illegal Option S' Oracle VDI 3.1

    UPDATE: Solved.
Issue was with missing patches - We had removed the patch installation for SRSS and SRWC as part of the install process for VDA 3.2 as these produced errors when installing on Solaris 10 x86. Applied the patches and everything works as intended.
    Hi Everyone,
Not sure if anyone else has come across this, but, I'm unable to establish RDP sessions to either Windows Terminal Server or XP Desktop using Oracle VDI 3.1 (Downloaded yesterday, all patches applied)
I'm seeing this logged for each uttsc session that attempts to start but I'm not sure what's passing the spurious - S option mentioned. Any hints would be appreciated!

It seems that I cannot install Sun Ray Server into a non-global zone. Well that's fine by me provided I don't actually need it.

I guess, it's clear that you need a valid support contract for your Hardware, otherwise your in troubles. A not so bad article about that you kind find at http://www.ypass.net/blog/2010/04/solaris-licensing-changes-the-real-story/

  • Beginner's inquiry on How Oracle VDI product works

    Hi,
I read some Oracle VDI (OVDI) pages but still don't get the whole picture as to how the OVDI product works and decided to shoot some of my questions here. My questions are as follows.
Since my users are currently using only Windows7, WindowsXP, and Smartphones... (no Solaris, no Linux)
Assuming that I installed/configured both OVDI software and storage on either a Sparc or x86_64 box and everything works fine on the OVDI server side,
    My question is:
Will my users will use their own devices to just bring up something like "Remote Desktop" to connect to the OVDI server and work there? That is, that's how there's nothing to save on the local drive of their laptops and their laptops would be used as if they were thin clients in the old days?
From the high level picture, I'd like to understand how the server/client works.
Thanks much in advance for sharing your knowledge!
    - Steve

    Hey Steve,
I'm not sure I understand the background on some of your questions. By the way, we've been using Oracle VDI for a little over 3 years, and we have about 450 virtual desktops (and thin clients) in production at the moment.
"do you think that the Oracle VDI solution really gives the benefits of using VDI?" -- the Oracle solution is as effective as any competitor VDI product, perhaps more so in some respects.
"Not just to follow the IT trend, but from the pragmatic point of view, do you think end-users in corporate businesses would get much more benefits even if it comes with some inconveniences and things that end-users may not like?" -- I think the business has to decide what their goals are with VDI. Is it to make life easier on the user? Is it to reduce IT costs? Is it to improve endpoint security and keep data in the datacenter? Are your users mobile? When we looked at VDI here (a hospital), we needed all those things. I think we came out with nearly all that except for maybe reduced IT costs. Yes, there was some user frustration and confusion early on before they understood how the mobility of VDI could benefit their workflow as they moved through the various buildings here on camps and to their houses. Ultimately I think they accept any minor inconveniences and have come to appreciate what the technology does for them. On the IT side, our lives are much better as well, but our goals early on were more focused on the users (healthcare providers) and their productivity.
"Also, I'd appreciate your feedback on the cost benefits of implementing/maintaining the OVDI solution (vs. continuing to use the laptops/desktops as standalone boxes) as well. Is it worth introducing it now or is it kind of premature yet and too early?" -- I think you mean to say the OVDC (oracle virtual desktop client software client). Honestly if you have the choice, commit to the VDI experience and buy the Oracle thin clients. They are great... there are no moving parts, no fans, nothing really to break. If someone steals one or "loses" it, who cares? Put in another. We replaced a few hundred desktop computers with them and as a result, our helpdesk staff probably can't even remember how to clone a machine or replace a hard drive. They don't have any of the problems that desktops or laptops have, and there is almost nothing to manage about them compared to a full workstation.
The OVDC client fills in some gaps where the thin clients leave off... take mobile users for example. We have thin clients in people's offices here, but they obviously don't have them at home. So instead we package the OVDC client and allow them to run it from home over a VPN. Of course, you can send a real physical thin client home with people if you wanted -- they have built-in VPN capability as well.
Personally, I wouldn't do VDI if you were going to leave all the old workstations and laptops in place. If someone's hard drive dies, you have to go replace it and reinstall the OVDC software... if someone loses their laptop and gets a new one, you have to go install that software again and configure it to look to the VDI servers... If someone gets a virus or malware on their PC and the OVDC client stops working, you have to go fix that PC to get the VDI client working again. None of those things would happen if you had true thin clients in place instead of full client side workstations.
I hope this helps a bit? If I am confused on something, please let me know. Whatever solution you go with, VDI is definitely ready for primetime, even in 24x7 environments. It will change the way your IT department works, and you might even end up with a few happy users.
    thanks

  • Oracle VDI 3.3 Desktops being restarted when recycled

    Hi,
I have just upgraded to Oracle VDI 3.3.2, from 3.2.2. I use this in a lab situation where I can have high numbers of people logging on at once, using the machines for an hour or two, then all logging out again. I used to just set the Desktop Recycling Policy to "Reuse Desktop" and have the Cloned Desktops Machines State set to "Running" and this would leave all the desktops in such a state that they could be logged into by users from the following group. However since the upgrade I have noticed that the desktops are being restarted when they get recycled, this is a problem because if I have 130 desktops all being restarted at the same time it unlikely that they will all be ready, say if the turnaround slot is 10 minutes or so.
Is this by design, and if so with which release did this start happening. I can't find any mention of this in the documentation. Or am I just finding an oddity, in which case I will open an SR with Oracle.
This is a major problem for our useage scenario!
    Alastair

    Thanks Katell.
It doesn't work for me. What version are you using?
    # vda -V
Oracle Virtual Desktop Infrastructure 3.4.1 (Build 09)
    # vda pool-setprops -p desktop-shutdown-on-unassign=disabled Pool-WindowsXP
    Unknown property: desktop-shutdown-on-unassign=disabled.
And I can't see the option when I execute either
    # vda pool-setprops --help
    # vda pool-getprops -a Pool-WindowsXP
I've opened a SR with Oracle Support.

    Hi
ODP assembly for 2.x was first released with ODAC 10.2.2.20, 10.2.0.3.0 and 10.2.0.4.0 are patch sets and not full installations so you have to have an insisting 2.x version of ODP already installed for the upgrade or it does not upgrade it if the machine never had a base install of ODP 2.x assembly. The way to get it is to install it into a new home or an insisting home already installed. So if you had already installed from the base release 10.2.0.1.0, that bundle only has ODP assembly for 1.x, you could install the 2.x assembly into the same home from the ODAC 10.2.0.2.0 bundle. If you start with a fresh machine then install from ODAC 10.2.0.2.21 to ODP .net 2 assembly and the base 10.2.0.1.0 client dependencies. Then you patch or upgrade to 10.2.0.4.0, but again when you apply the 10.2.0.4.0 patch set, you need to already have 10.2.2.0.20 already installed.
May I asked the specific installation bundle you used? and if you installed from ODAC 10.2.0.2.20. Do you have a C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\odp.net\bin\2.x directory and a C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\odp.net\ublisherpolicy\2.x directory? That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • Whether Oracle 8.1.6 Supports Windows 2003 Server/Windows 2000 Adv. Server

    Dear All,
Whether Oracle 8.1.6 Supports Windows 2003 Server/Windows 2000 Adv. Server.
I tried it in windows 2003 server but i couldn't. Atlease tell me wheather it support windows 2000 adv. server. This is my first dba job.
Under Doc ID: 66397.1 saying Oracle 8.1.6 Not Support Windows NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition.
Under Doc ID: 77627.1 saying Oracle 8.1.6 Supports Windows 2000 Support.
    Please help me out urgently.

Since you have access to Metalink, you could be looking at the Certify tab to find this information. But, the answer is that 8.1.6 is no longer supported by Oracle. However, you should be able to install it on Win 2000 advanced server. You just can't get any support for it.
The earliest version of db supported on Win 2003 was either 9.0 or 9.2, but 9.0 is desupported now as well.

  • Sun Ray error when connecting to Oracle VDI - No Kiosk Sessions Available

When the Sun Ray DTUs go to connect to the Oracle VDI cluster at times they will throw the error "Error starting Kiosk session: No Kiosk accounts configured." We have tried going through the steps to confirm that the Kiosk sessions are configured on the two secondary hosts but the problem persists. When the Sun Ray DTUs do connect they will work for a while and then when left idle for a period of time will loose their connection and be unable to restart the connection with the error mentioned. The Screen Blanking option on the Sun Ray DTUs is set to "0" to prevent them from going into power-save mode but this makes no difference. The Sun Ray DTUs are all updated with the latest GUI firmware and there are no custom options set in the Sun Ray Session Servers.
The thing that bothers me the most is I have not seen any error messages in the logs. I will post up the logs as links in a follow-up post.
Has anyone had any similar issues while connecting with a Sun Ray DTU?
Currently we are running Oracle VDI 3.2.1 on the cluster.
Here are the commands we used to reset the Sun Ray Kiosk accounts:
    # /opt/SUNWkio/bin/kioskstatus -c
    # /opt/SUNWkio/bin/kioskuseradm status
    # /opt/SUNWkio/bin/kioskuseradm delete
    # /opt/SUNWkio/bin/kioskuseradm create -l utku -g utkiosk -i auto -u –c

I was trying to transfer data from oracle to sql server 2008 on a daily basis.
I have very hard time connecting to oracle from ssis package on windows server 2008. I am almost dead and cannot find any help. i was able to connect to oracle using import/export 64 bit feature of SQL Server 2008 using Oracle provider for OLEDB. But I am not sure why the same does not work with BIDS?
    Here's the environment info:
    1. Oracle Client 10g
    2. SQL Server 2008
    3. Windows Server 2008
Appreciate your help. Please save me.

  • Oracle RAC DIF/DIX support

Does Oracle RAC database support DIF/DIX for data integrity? I am assuming this should be supported  with the use of UEK2/3 kernel. Thanks.

Considering Oracle wrote DIF/DIX support for Linux, yes it does. It requires the use of ASMlib as well.
