Oracle VM 3.0.2 cloning guest

Hi all,
I have issue with disk performance during VM cloning.
there is just one virtual disk (35G) and cloning of this this is very long. As I understood OVM is just do copy of this disk and nothing more special. In 3 minutes only 1GB, my network is 100MB, HDD is simple SATA 7200rpm, my repository in OVM Linux machine. So source and destination folders are same. With Linux "cp" command this is much faster.
[root@ovm VirtualDisks]# ll -h 0004fb0000120000d3a9f7302106e8d9.img
-rw------- 1 root root 4.7G Nov 29 14:08 0004fb0000120000d3a9f7302106e8d9.img
[root@ovm VirtualDisks]# time (cp /storage/VirtualDisks/0004fb0000120000d3a9f7302106e8d9.img /storage/)
real 0m6.940s
user 0m0.586s
sys 0m4.100s
[root@ovm VirtualDisks]#
Where is mistake or this is just normal for OVM?

We use dd to clone disk images on NFS, or reflink on ocfs2 repositories. The reflink is instant, the dd is not.

    Hi,
I am using Oracle 9.2.0.6 on Linux AS. This is a 24X7 DB and I am not using RMAN. With this facts can any one please provide detailed steps or any link that can help?
    Oracle 9.2.0.6 / 24X7 / no RMAN / Archive log enabled
    Thanks in adv.

Actually, there is not much to setup RMAN to get the cloning efforts going. Please see metalink note:228257.1 for the exact procedure. I tried it and it works flawlessly.

  • Oracle VM Server 2.2 Linux Guest cannot ntp to server properly

    Hi All,
I have installed a VM guest Oracle Linux Enterprise 5U6 in Oracle VM server 2.2. I follow below procedure to config NTP in VM server.
    https://blogs.oracle.com/virtualization/entry/configuring_ntp_services_for_oracle
However, when I apply the NTP configuration with VM server itself on the Guest, it detects the NTP server in high jitter value. Even though the stratrum is lower than the local host, It still cannot use that server as NTP source. Here is some information about the NTP debug and IP address.

  • Oracle VM x86, enable audio to guests

Hi, we have one x86 server Sun Fire X4170 M2 and Oracle VM Server 2.2.1 installed in it.
We want to enable audio in a guest hosted by this server.
We saw that the qemu command
    */usr/lib/xen/bin/qemu-dm -help*
    doesn't show the option
    soundhw
If we are right, this is the option needed for enabling audio in guests
    (from /etc/xen/xmexample.hvm)
    # enable sound card support, [sb16|es1370|all|..,..], default none
    #soundhw='sb16'
When we change the guest's .vm file adding the soundhw option and create the domain, we receive error messages
    *[root@ovm ~]# xm create /PATH/running_pool/11_GUEST/vm.cfg*
    Using config file "/PATH/running_pool/11_GUEST/vm.cfg".
Error: Domain '11_GUESTS' already exists with ID '19'
    *[root@ovmserver ~]# vi /var/log/xen/qemu-dm-11_GUEST.log*
    domid: 18
qemu: the number of cpus is 1
    /usr/lib/xen/bin/qemu-dm: invalid option -- '-soundhw'
Additionally we tested all the possible values for soundhw (ich6, ac97, es1370, sb16, pcspk), but (as we expected) none worked.
Has somebody enabled audio for guests in a similar scenario?
    Thanks in advance.

    user13379246 wrote:

    Using config file "/PATH/running_pool/11_GUEST/vm.cfg".
Error: Domain '11_GUESTS' already exists with ID '19'This means the guest is already running. You need to shut it down first.
You may have more luck using PCI passthru to actually pass the entire sound device into the guest as a PCI device and let the guest OS handle it completely.

  • Oracle Apps RAC TO RAC cloning from Netbackup(tape)

    Hi,
I am doing RAC to RAC cloning on linux 5 following is the note id i follow
Cloning Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 RAC-Enabled Systems with Rapid Clone [ID 559518.1]
In this note step 4.2 we use adclone.pl to prepare the stage on source using "Method=Rman", i think this creates image backup of the database on source system
In step 5.1.4.1 we restore the database on target using the stage backup we took in source.
So, here i was thinking if it is possible to use Netbackup server (tapes) for "rmanstage=" parameter. Because we don't have that much disk space to accommodate backup and as with Rman duplicate database we directly connect to tape with auxiliary for cloning, Please let me know if we can use this process with the above adclone.pl
    Thanks,
    Tanveer Mohammed

    Hi Tanveer,
Yes what you want is allowed, you are free to clone your DB using rman outside of the cloning utilities.
When you want this make sure you follow:
Cloning Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 RAC-Enabled Systems with Rapid Clone [ID 559518.1] >> Section 8: Advanced Cloning Scenarios >> 8.1 Cloning the Database Separately

I tried all the above, without success.
Now I have a new problem, after I tried to relink according DOC ID 356878.1

  • Oracle 9i (9.2.0.8) installed on cloned Windows 32-bit VMC instance

    Hello,
We have a Windows 2003 Server 32-bit VMC instance running a copy of Oracle 9i (9.2.0.8) for QA/Dev work on one of our software products. This software is going to be moved over to an Oracle 10g database with our next product release. In order to test the results of moving our software to 10g, our system administrator cloned the current VMC instance (giving it a new IP and computer name).
I've found that adjusting the TNSNAMES.ORA for the database and Oracle client on the new (cloned) server instance still does not allow the Oracle listener to start properly on the new server... I'm suspecting that there are other areas of the database/client that need to be manually updated, to change any references to the old server name and/or IP address.
Has anyone had to go through this type of manual correction before, that can give me some tips on what areas/files to update so that the database/client will work properly on the new, cloned instance?
    Thank you!
    Sabrina G.

Could you please specify the error message displayed. And what does VMC stands for?

Thanks :)As far as I understand it this is not really VM related.
You have an existing linux machine .... uname -a ... with a partiocular OS and kernel and set of packages installed ....
And a guest VM running linux ... uname -a .... with hopefully the same/similar OS and set of packages installed, similar users, directory layout etc.
And you wish to get the Oracle (Classic RDBMS) home software cloned/migrated and an oracle database cloned/migrated.
There's a number of different senarios here ... can i help you out .... (the answer is I could but i dont have time).
The start point is good planning and careful notes if you are attempting to change any versions / layours etc.
You might have stages like (this is a top of head fagpacket and perhaps not best terminology):
    - Install basic Linux software on VM guest.
    - Install additional linux packages
    - create groups, users, directories, system parameters etc.
    - Create or clone oracle home.
    - clone oracle database by eg RMAN or otherwise.
Different forums may help different stages if necessary.

  • How to create new guest OS as duplicate of existing

    Hi all,
If anyone would be so kind as to point me in the correct direction, or give me the steps to create a new guest OS by duplicating an existing guest OS I'd really appreciate such assistance. My details are:
    Oracle VM Server 2.1.2
Guest OS: OEL v5 Update 2
    Thanks.

    clone it...
or cimply create a new guest thru oracle vm manager and from serevr copy the system.cfg and vm.cfg files into the newly created folder of a new guest in running pool.
later once the guest is started u will have to change the name and ip address of the new guest as cloning will create 2 identical guesta.

  • Nls support with oracle xml parser in java

I'm using The JAXP interface to manipulate xml with xsl. the implementation that I use is Oracle xml parser.
My xml contains a lot of hebrew chars, and in the result stream each char translated into 5-6 chars, which makes the result to be 5-6 times bigger than it suppose to be, and harder for me to debug my application.
The client's browser shows the results well.
How can I make the transformator to transform the hebrew chars to hebrew char istead of longer and not readable string ?
