That has happened TWICE to me too! THe song isn't in my library, anywhere. And it says everything has been downloaded to my computer/device.
Another time i was charged for something i'll never know about, b/c i saw it charged to my acct. but don't recall buying anything when i first registered my device. -sigh- & Nowhere in the help/support sites does it say what to do or could've gone wrong & how to fix it. i know it's only a few $, but if i hadn't checkd & bought more....? i can't even use itunes to get music now.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Do you remember if you have installed some software prior to this issue?
Delete programs you never use.
If the issue reoccurs in Clean Boot, but works fine in Safe Mode, the cause may be the disabled hardware drivers. You may narrow down the
causes in Device Clean Boot.

When you say you ordered an ibook, I'm guessing you didn't order an older white portable computer, but a printed book through iPhoto, with Apple Photo Services.
