Ordered my First Mac

I ordered my First Mac note book on Saturday, May 20. I'm another Windows user.

Don't worry though, if you want to use linux too, you can do this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gE1XQyT_IbA
I'm also a linux user who used it on the desktop for a while, and then I rebooted into windows, and oops...got stuck. Then I got a mac and I haven't really needed windows for the most part, and I can open up a terminal and write programs using emacs and gcc and all that...so it's pretty nice. But there are a few programs that just don't work on OS X, and it would be great to be able to use them natively, once I get a MacBook in a few weeks

  • Just ordered my first Mac Mini

THis is goign to be my first apple computer. I do have the Ipad and have owned Ipods in the past, and was very happy with those. It's supposed to arrive today. I am truly unsure what to expect. I have seen people with the Macs and have drooled over them for many years. Yay Me.

You will be amazed at how true those words are.
Your Mini should come with Lion, which now will update to 10.7.2 if it is not already on there, and you can setup an account in iCloud...free...first 5 GB storage is free, and email, calendars, addressbook, and photos from streaming photos do not count as part of that 5 GB.
If you have iDevices, each can attach and sync via iCloud...terrific way to keep all of your calendars in one location and synced.
When you setup, if you haven't used Mac calendars before, wait 'til you see how easy it is to enter events on a calendar for home, one for work, etc...and they come out color coded so you can see instantly what the event is associated with.  Enter information on your iPad and it will appear on your Mini, or whatever devices you have.

  • Ordered my first (mac)book today!

I ordered it a couple of hours ago, the white 2hgz version (as is) and a pink neoprene case. I don't know yet if the payment has been authorised- I used a Visa electron card- does anyone know if these are accepted? I haven't received any emails whatsoever from Apple, and I've checked my junk mail.

Thankyou all! I think there may be a delay in taking payment as I'm having it delivered to where I work- so I don't miss it!- which is not the same as the address for my debit card. I don't think it's sunk in yet, but when it's been despatched I'll be excited!
I'm looking forward to being able to move around and not have to sit at a desk, or watch films in bed, generally increase my laziness!
I've recently started full-time work after leaving university so this is my treat I will let you know how it goes.

  • Just ordered my new and first mac

As the title says i just ordered my first mac which is the macbook 2.2(white) and 4g of RAM i am switching from a pc users of many years. i hope that i enjoy my macbook as much as i enjoy my iphone!
So you guys love you macbook? tell me why.

+There is a delete key and a back arrow... I think thats good enough.+
Re my post earlier in this thread about the backspace key, I was wrong. On the Apple keyboard, the backspace key is called the "delete" key. It's really the "delete" key that missing IF you're used to using the delete key to delete text/numbers ahead of the cursor. From what I've observed, the only way to delete characters ahead of the cursor is to highlight them and then hit the delete key. Or move the cursor ahead of the characters to be deleted and then backspace them.
I know it's nit-picking, but I'm used to having separate backspace and delete key from my 25 years of DOS/Windows experience. However, I'm getting used to using the delete key for both functions now.
Another feature missing from my MacBook is a HD access light to tell me if my HD is being access when I load something.

  • Bought my first Mac and am curious about the learning curve for FCE HD

After 30+ years in the DOS/Windows/PC world, I've ordered my first Mac -- a Mac Pro -- with Final Cut Express HD.
I was wondering if other switchers could give me an idea of the kind of learning curve I'm looking at. I have used Sony Vegas Video almost exclusively for the past 5-6 years.
    Thanks!

I have no experience with Vegas so don't know what the similarities and differences will be.
People like Tom Wolsky (the main contributor to this forum) will be able to advise you on that.
I came from Premiere 6.5 and found the transition reasonably quick and pain-free.
I would suggest that you get an editing workshop book. Tom has written several but of course you will need FCE 3.5.
He guides you easily step by step from the complete basics (connecting the camera etc.) to a high level of editing skill.

While you are there, take a look at the rest of his site, which has a useful FAQ etc.

  • I just got my first mac pro and I can't get the photos out of iPhotos moved on my hp external hard drive, I try export says unable, then I try to drag it from the desktop to the external hard drive but same problem. Thank you so much

I just got my first mac pro and I can't get the photos out of iPhotos and move them on my hp external hard drive, I try export says unable, then I try to drag it from the desktop to the external hard drive but same problem. what to do? Thank you so much

How is your external drive formatted? Use Disk Utility to check the volume format. If it is NTFS, you will need to reformat the HDD as exFAT in order to retain universal compatibility (RW to it on both Mac and Windows).

I just got my first Mac and downloaded Photoshop CC onto it.  I opened my first photo and tried to save.  I get a message that says  " write access in not granted "  what does that mean?  and why can't I save my images?

  • Sort Podcasts in Chronological order (oldest first)?

How do i sort my podcasts in chronological order (oldest first)? The default is reverse chronological order (most recent first).
I am able to do this in iTunes on my Mac. But this does not translate to my iPod after a synch.

    Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
This isn't configurable on the iPod. Reverse date order is what you get. You can however make playlists with the tracks in a different order.

  • Looking to buy my first Mac computer product. . .

Hey there Mac support users! I'm looking to buy my first Mac computer product, and I am currently caught indecisive between the 13in and the 15 inch Macbook Pro. I have been over the technical specifications of both, and I do not really want to push out the 1700$ it would cost to buy the 15 inch if getting the 13 would be just as effective for my purposes. And of course, here is some background info on me:
I am currently a college student (hooray education pricing), and am also a musician who plays guitar, bass, some keys, and does vocals.
I will be using the Macbook for some light gaming (Diablo III with friends, maybe some other stuff later), but I am specifically wondering about which version to buy as concerns Pro Tools and audio recording -- something I plan on getting into after purchasing the Macbook.
I am aware that the 15 inch has a more powerful processor able to handle more things at once, which may come in handy while utilizing Pro Tools. In addition, I have noticed that the 15 inch Macbook version comes with two built in 3.5mm jacks on the side -- one for audio in, and the other for audio out (as compared to the standard headphone jack of the 13inch model). I am curious to know whether having the two separate jacks would be ultimately beneficial for music recording, or would it simply be better/cheaper to buy the 13 inch and get an adapter for the headphone jack?
I guess, in sum, I am just looking for some pointers in the best direction -- which would be best for a musician using Pro Tools: cheaper normal/super version of the 13 inch? Or the more expensive yet powerful 15inch model?
    Any help is greatly appreciated
    Thanks!

Hi Ziatheral, and welcome to the forums!
You've asked a lot of really good questions, and I'll do my best to be helpful.
For starters, you'll need to know that Pro Tools requires a 7200 RPM hard drive. Your standard off the shelf Mac ships with a 5200 RPM drive, so you will need to custom order a machine to meet specs.
Pro Tools is not yet officially qualified to run on Mountain Lion, although some users report it runs ok for them. It will take Avid a while to release an up-to-date version of Pro Tools.
You can NEVER have too much screen real estate. I've run Pro Tools on a 27" monitor, and even the 15" screen seems tiny by comparison. You get better graphics on the 15" monitor, too.
When recording, most artists use some kind of breakout box for mic preamping and monitoring. It's cool to think that the built in inputs and outputs will work, and in some cases they will, but that method is far from how pro recording is done. Many people like the Apogee Duet 2 for this:
    http://apogeedigital.com/products/duet2.php
Personally, I'm kind of cheap, and if you're not going to be using MIDI, I like the Mackie Blackjack. I can at least afford one of those more easily:
    http://www.mackie.com/products/onyxblackjack/
You have some time. It'll probably be a month or two before Pro Tools is ready to run on Mountain Lion. Keep looking. Do your homework. Don't just take somebody's word for it (including mine). And write if you have any more questions. The community is here for you.

  • First Mac, Am I making the right choice

I am a long time windows user and am now going for my first Mac. I have the macbook air on order thru a local vendor and its backorder til March. I wanted to get input on whether I should go for it or the Macbook Pro. Price is not an object (work is paying for it)
The reason I like the air was for portability and uniqueness. I am looking at the new macbook pro and it has triple the hard drive space, double processor speed but its 2 pound heavier.
I know this is all personal preference but is it (the Air) a good starting place?
Do the macbook pros start as fast as the Air?
    Thanks in Advance
    Mark T
    Chicago

I have had a MBA for about two weeks now and have been using it as my only computer. So far, fingers crossed, it has really done the job. I travel a great deal and the lower weight made it ideal for me. I find it incredibly usable, with only a few exceptions. The multi-touch trackpad (also now available on Pro) is simply awesome. I sit on an airplane and watch the poor sods with their Dells and HPs working on those tiny 1" square touchpads and I just chuckle. Yes, I was one of them until recently.
Troubles: I've seen this discussed elsewhere in these forums, but the lack of USB ports is a more serious issue than I think Apple gave it credit for. At home, where I have a nice, fast 802.11n network set up it's not as much of a problem. But here in Paris, in my hotel room, I have a couple of CDs I purchased that I'd like to rip onto my Air to load on my iPod for the flight home. The Superdrive only works when connected directly to the Air (right?) but there isn't wireless network in my Sheraton hotel room. So I have to choose which to connect to my sole USB port, the superdrive or the ethernet cable so that iTunes can get track listings automatically. Also, I use a Blackberry and like to sync it with my Mac, but I once again have to disconnect from the network before I connect the USB-tethered Blackberry to sync. Also, I have to travel with the superdrive because I can't rip or listen to audio CDs or DVDs using RemoteDisc.
Are these issues that make it unusable? No. I still will use this as my only machine for the foreseeable future (although the new Macbook Pros call to me at night in my sleep.... ) But the simple addition of 1 more USB port would have eliminated my only complaint.
By and large, I'm so pleased to have left Vista behind. Life is too short to spend so much of it dealing with the nonsense that Windows Vista serves up. After nearly a year of moaning and complaining I've finally left it behind and will never go back. The Macbook Air works very very well as my sole machine.

  • This is my first mac laptop. Do I need internet security/virus protection?  If so, what is recommended?

This is my first mac laptop. Do I need internet security/virus protection?  If so, what is recommended?

Additional informaton about OS X security can be found in Thomas Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
In addition to what Bimmer 7 Series has suggested...
Keep Java (not JavaScript) disabled in all your browsers and if you have not installed it yet, don't do so unless you are told that you need it in order to run a critical application or visit a web-site that you must use.
You won't need your Firewall turned on as long as you are on a trusted network using a strong WPA2 password for WiFi, such as your home or workplace, but be sure to turn it on when you need to take your MBP to Starbucks or some other public hotspot.

  • Merom - And my first Mac

So today I purchased my first mac, a macbook pro with all the bells and whistles that should be arriving next week, little did I know because I hadn't been to the forums in a while that all this talk about the Merom chips possibly being installed on new MBPs in upcoming weeks or months. My question is this, will my MBP that I just ordered be upgradeable; will apple take care of this for me and automatically put it in there? Or will I get screwed in the continual advancement of hardware right as I leave the gate and be left with an oudated 3g bomb in my bank account? ::fingers crossed kids::

The Core 2 Duo chips are out. Dell, Samsung, etc all announced Core 2 Duo laptops yesterday for delivery in about two weeks. I think it's reasonable to assume Apple is not going to let their "Business Level" laptop get runover by the likes of Dell. That is just common sense.
If I were you I'd cancel your order and just sit on the sidelines for a few weeks. If nothing new show up by MacWorld Paris, then what have you lost...a few weeks. On the other hand if you don't wait and in the coming weeks their is a refresh you just lost a 10-20% power boost plus whatever other improvements Apple makes to the MBP.
If you order a MBP today and get it before the bump then no, it will not be upgradable. The chip is soldered to the MLB. Apple might hold your order back for the Merom, but no guarantee of that. The only way to guarantee is to wait.

  • This is my first mac, it is a macbook pro. i restarted it but when it started back up i saw a white screen and then it prompted me to insert the reboot disk. anyone else have this problem?

I recently bought a Macbook Pro, this is my first Mac. I restarted it, but when it started back there was a plain white screen and then it prompted me to insert the reboot disk. Has anyone else had this problem and is there a way to do this manually like with PC's?

The new Mac's came with OS X Lion 10.7 and there are no boot disks.
Since it's so new, take it back to the Apple Store and let them deal with it.
If not you can hold Command and r (as in rotten) keys down and boot the computer.
You'll be presented with a several options, including one to reinstall OS X Lion provided you have a Apple ID, which means you have to use Safari in there to set one up. To do that you need to set up a email account with Google or Yahoo. Once you get the ID, then you can download Lion and reinstall it.
It's so stupid not having a copy of the OS on hand to perform your own repairs.
Of course Apple will be happy to sell you a $69 Lion USB stick.
Like I said, take it back to the store, and try to get your money back, that will force them to think about just giving you a replacement machine that works.
Lion doesn't work really but it can be acceptable until the patches get released.

  • My first Mac and so far I love it!

I just bought a MacBook with OS 10.4.8, and so far I am absolutely besotted with it...I mean, as much as you can love something that's an inanimate object. I have had PCs since I got my very first computer when I started grad school, and I was generally satisfied with them...but when I recently had to call my PC manufacturer to come and install a new motherboard on a less-than-six month old computer...THEN wasted another four hours after that fighting with the antivirus people trying to get that issue resolved...WELL, enough was enough, and off to the Apple store I went.
I'm still on a learning curve for OS as compared to Windows but I've been using Windows for so long I'm giving myself time to adjust. I'm also still working on getting my @X&*( wireless router to work...but that was a problem before I ever got the Mac.
I love the size of my MacBook (so small! so light!) and have been busily downloading music, etc., for an upcoming flight to Seattle. It runs as fast as my desktop (without the pesky bootup problems and never ending battle with the security), I've had no problems with the sound, I bought the Microsoft OfficeMac (so there are some familiar landmarks). I tend to run a lot of applications at the same time when I'm on my computer, and so far I have had very few problems with stalling or freezing.
So...PC to Mac converts, are there any "wish I'd known that with my first Mac" tips you can pass along?
    Thank you!
    A "happy" camper
